The film was edited, compiled and reframed from the material originally filmed for the Polish stop motion animated series Moomins (1977) in 1977-1982. The series was mostly filmed in layers, with Moomin puppets separated from the other animated objects painted on glass plates in the foreground and background. The producer Tom Carpelan says that the original material suited well for stereoscopic 3D conversion since it's almost like the series was intended to be that way. "Moomins and the Comet Chase" was one of the first feature films produced in 3D in Scandinavia (and the first in Finland). The other was Danish film The Olsen Gang Gets Polished (2010) (Olsen Gang Gets Polished), released in the same year.
