The weekend numbers are here and with it we are seeing the beginnings of how much the Writers and Actors strikes are going to affect the 2024 box office as there were zero wide new releases. Granted, January is generally a slow time and most studios sit this weekend out due to not wanting to compete with the NFL Championship games, but even last year saw Neon release their Brandon Cronenberg film Infinity Pool while Fathom events knew their faith based audience would show up for Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist.
But let’s not bury the lead: in its third week of release The Beekeeper has pulled off the upset and won the weekend with $7.4 million. That is quite the feat as R rated action films have had a really tough time at the box office in recent years. In our Thursday predictions, we thought the NFL playoffs may...

To mark the release of Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist on 27th March, we’ve been given Blu-ray copies to give away to 2 winners.
The world is in a state of devastation. Millions of people have suddenly vanished across the globe and humanity is heading for unprecedented and unrelenting chaos. Uncompromising evil is unleashed, and the world is plunged into a state of emergency. With financial markets collapsing, governments being toppled and a global lockdown in place… those left behind are forced to choose a side. The stakes for survival have never been higher… could they be facing the Rise of The Antichrist?
When a supposed expert claims that a second wave of devastation is imminent… news anchor Cameron ‘Buck’ Williams (Greg Perrow) makes it his mission to disprove her theory. Going against his boss Steve Plank (Corbin Bernsen) and the network, Buck teams up with hacker Dirk Burton (Stafford Perry) and together,...

It was bound to happen eventually, but Avatar: The Way of Water was finally ousted as the top film of the box-office weekend by two new arrivals, with Knock at the Cabin taking the top spot over 80 for Brady by 1.7 million.
Debuting in first place over the weekend was M. Night Shayamalan’s Knock at the Cabin with 14.2 million. This was just enough to best second-place 80 for Brady which also opened over the weekend with 12.5 million. These two new films pushed Avatar: The Way of Water to third place where it added 10.8 million to bring its eight-week total to 636.4 million. The film has now cracked the top ten of lifetime domestic grosses. Meanwhile, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish added 8.0 million over the weekend as it again held its ground just behind Avatar to land in fourth place. The third debut in the top ten this weekend, BTS: Yet to Come in Cinemas,...

Numbers have begun rolling in for this first weekend of February and boy was I off with my predictions from Thursday! M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin should still come in first place, but it is opening softer than I anticipated with an estimated 15 million based off a 5.6 million Friday. I actually saw the writing on the wall for this one when I saw it Thursday night (after I had written my predictions) in a Dolby theater that was fairly empty. The opening puts it right in line with Night’s last film Old that opened to 16.8 million back in July 2021. That opening is a big reason I thought this movie would come in higher. Allow me to take you all the way back to summer 2021 when movie theaters were still struggling to find their footing and many people were still wary of going back to theaters. Since then,...

January 2022 was an odd month. There was a strong sense that 2022 was going to be much better than 2021 at the box office as the industry struggled to recover from the pandemic, in small part thanks to the success of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" in late '21, which teed up the ball for greener pastures. And yes, we had a steadier stream of hits last year, but where things were really lagging had to do with anything outside of the top five (often the top three) on the charts any given weekend. It was one or two movies doing okay, while everything else was fighting for scraps. In 2023, it looks like those days may finally be behind us.
As pointed out by Exhibitor Relations, this past weekend's domestic box office totaled a little more than 70 million, with "Avatar: The Way of Water" (15.7 million) leading the way for a seventh straight weekend.

For much of the back half of 2022, a large percentage of people who love movies or work in the business were wondering — could "Avatar: The Way of Water" actually be the hit it needed to be, 13 years after the original became the highest-grossing movie of all time? Any doubters (myself included) have been good and truly silenced. Case in point, this past weekend, James Cameron's underwater space epic topped the charts for the seventh time in a row, marking the first time that has happened since the original "Avatar" came out. It's now the fourth biggest movie ever, recently passing "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and should pass "Titanic" for the #3 spot any day now. Never. Doubt. James. Cameron.
As for the particulars, "Way of Water" took in 15.7 million domestically, dropping just 22 in its seventh weekend, per Box Office Mojo. The only other time a movie topped the U.

It’s lucky number seven for Avatar: The Way of Water as the film stood firm atop the box-office weekend for the seventh consecutive weekend, as it continued to climb the list of highest domestic grossing films of all time.
Adding 15.7 million over the weekend, lifted Avatar: The Way of Water to the eleventh spot on the aforementioned list. With a total of 620.6 million, the film just passed Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi and Incredibles 2 as it readies itself for an assault on the top ten. The Way of Water also finished 5.1 million ahead of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish which stood firm in second place with 10.6 million, bringing its six-week total to 140.8 million. Meanwhile, A Man Called Otto hopped up two spots to claim third place over the weekend with 6.8 million. This gives the Tom Hanks film a five-week total of 46.1 million. That film...

If you see just one thriller this year in which a climactic car chase is followed by the director-star breaking character to deliver a five-minute sermon straight into the camera — followed by three more minutes of Mike Huckabee leading viewers in prayer to accept Jesus into their hearts, before the end credits roll — then make it “Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist,” the latest in a series of apocalyptic films based on the bestselling Christian book series.
Although “Rise” is the sixth feature derived from dozens of rapture-iffic novels and spinoff novellas published under the “Left Behind” banner in the mid-’90s through mid-2000s, it’s the first in the film series to have Kevin Sorbo as a leading man as well as director. Where past installments were relatively coy about their evangelistic purpose, Sorbo opts to add a literal come-to-Jesus epilogue. You may recall that the last actor...

Multiple Oscar-nominated films opened, expanded, or returned this weekend without much box-office impact. Best Picture Oscar nominee “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney) took #1 for its seventh weekend (and likely its last; M. Night Shyamalan’s “Knock at the Cabin” should replace it next weekend). It fell a bit off pace over the past two weeks, but it should still supplant fellow Best Picture contender “Top Gun: Maverick” as the biggest 2022 domestic release. James Cameron’s film stands at 620 million domestic, 2.117 billion total worldwide.
Best Animated Feature Nominee “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (Universal) was #2, but that’s been consistently strong performer. At #3 was the Academy-ignored and critically derided “A Man Called Otto” (Sony). With 6,750,000 million in 3,957 theaters, it is the dominant film for older audiences despite its absence from the race.
Excluding “The Way of Water” and “Puss in Boots,” the other 11 nominated films that played this weekend...

January came to a close with two movies that have dominated the box office since before Christmas continuing their runs for a final weekend, which also brought in all sorts of new and re-released odds and ends.
The big story of the weekend is that James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” won its seventh weekend in a row at the box office after crossing the 600 million mark earlier in the week. It remained in first place with an estimated 15.7 million this weekend, down just 22, helped by a lack of stronger new releases, bringing its domestic total to 620.6 million. This weekend, it surpassed the North American grosses for Pixar’s “The Incredibles” and “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Last Jedi,” as it slowly inches closer to the 623.3 million made by “Marvel’s the Avengers” in 2012, which would make it the 10th highest-grossing movie of all time, domestically.

The milestones keep coming for Avatar: The Way of Water.
James Cameron’s blockbuster is now the fourth top-grossing film of all time at the global box office after passing up the 2.071 billion grossed globally by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, not adjusted for inflation. The Way of Water finished Friday with a worldwide cume of 2.074 billion, meaning that Cameron has directed three of the four top-grossing films of all time. Disney, which inherited the Avatar franchise when taking over 20th Century Fox, likewise dominates the upper reaches of the list.
The all-time roster is topped by Cameron’s original Avatar (2.92 billion), followed by Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame (2.79 billion) and Cameron’s Titanic (2.194 billion).
Box office analysts believe The Way of Water will ultimately overtake Titanic even though a remastered 3D version of Titanic is being rereleased next week in time for Valentine’s Day (Paramount is handling the rerelease domestically,...

A quick Saturday update for you as Avatar: The Way of Water continues its streak atop the box office with an estimated weekend take of 15 million. That number added to its international grosses will put it past Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the fourth highest grossing worldwide release of all time which now means James Cameron is responsible for three of the top four highest grossing movies ever made, if it wasn’t for those damn Avengers in second place!
Apart from that bit of news, the top five this weekend really isn’t too earth shattering. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is continuing its slow burn release that is now over 300 million worldwide. Again, quite impressive when you consider the movie opened to just around 12 million at the domestic box office.
The Tom Hanks starring A Man Called Otto is continuing its strong word of mouth roll out.

It may not be particularly fair to say that this is a bit of a duff weekend, because there are indeed new wide and moderate releases. It’s just that very few of them are screening in advance for critics and therefore might be seen as less than. Can any of them topple Week 7 of “Avatar: The Way of Water”?
The one possibility is “Infinity Pool,” Brandon Cronenberg’s follow-up to his 2020 thriller, “Possessor,” which was stymied by the shutdown of movie theaters due to Covid. This one is equally enigmatic, though it has more of a name cast, including Alexander Skarsgård (“Big Little Lies”) and Mia Goth. Skarsgård plays a writer on a luxury vacation with his wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman from “Dopesick”) who becomes involved in a fatal accident that throws him into the locale’s world of horror and violence.
