Leela's secret is revealed and she is condemned to a life in the sewers
Tweekums17 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This, the 100th episode of 'Futurama', assuming you count each movie as four episodes, sees the Planet express crew preparing to celebrate their 100th delivery. That delivery sees them a nitro glycerine soufflé to the wealthy Mrs. Astor. She invites them to attend a fund raiser to pay for mutant education… Leela is unimpressed as it is clear that those present don't care about the mutants they just want them trained to keep the sewers working. Fry lets slip that Leela is actually a mutant and she is promptly thrown into the sewers as mutants aren't allowed on the surface. When her colleagues petition for her to be allowed to return to the surface they are sentenced to two weeks in the sewers for knowingly harbouring a mutant. Here Fry jumps into the mutagenic lake and emerges looking distinctly mutated. Leela then inspires the mutants to rise up and demand equal rights with surface dwellers.

This is a fairly solid issue led episode with a decent story and some good gags. We also learn a bit more about Leela's past and meet her grandmother for the first times. The way Fry 'mutated' but was able to return to normal by the end of the story was handled in an amusing way that didn't break any of the rules we've previously been told. The sewers are an interesting location; I particularly liked the nod to Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis'. The idea of the 'Land Titanic' was a bit silly but at least it ultimately gave us a nice little story about Leela's grandmother and some amusing moments when the Planet Express crew find its remains. Overall, while I wouldn't call this a classic episode, it is still pretty good.

I'm very glad we got Futurama back, although I thought the first couple of episodes weren't up to the usual Futurama standards.

There is quite a lot of competition now, especially with Family Guy, American Dad and The Simpsons. At the moment I find both American Dad and Family Guy to be funnier and more entertaining.

When Futurama first came out, comparing it to The Simpsons, the show took The Simpsons humor a step further, and the jokes often more suitable for grown ups than for kids. I welcomed this evolution and later we got Family Guy as well which is one of my favorite shows.

After the success of Family Guy and American dad I noticed The Simpsons show changed a little bit, suddenly there were a lot more jokes and references for grown ups. This was a very positive thing, and now The Simpsons are in the same league as Family Guy and American dad.

But now I find Futurama being left behind a little. That's why I don't understand why characters such as Calculon and The Zapper haven't been featured more in the episodes so far, and this is episode 12. They're some of the best Futurama characters along with Bender and Zoidberg. In earlier series these characters were essential ingredients for excellent episodes.

I find this a bit worrying, surely Matt Groening and co are aware of this..

I saw an upload on YouTube of this episode in full and I was so caught up in the moment that I accidentally watched the whole thing, without me even realising. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing, but anyway I don't think anything else has been able to make me watch the whole thing from start to finish and not feel bored or anything like that. In which case, impressive!
