Planned obsolescence is an immoral practice that should be eliminated
trolliyama24 June 2020
I can see why some people don't like very much this episode due its topical elements (Some of which didn't age very well) but the first half was a more than accurate critique of the dire consequences of planned obsolescence, and the disgusting business practices made by companies like Apple. And also, of the worrying indifference of the majority of the population towards this subject, even among those who consider themselves "activists", perfectly reflected in the sequence where the main characters inmediately forget about the horrible things they witness on the Third World of the Antares System.

Just for that, this episode deserves 8 stars.

A fun look at the technological society and where it is headed
zerodatguy2 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This episode of Futurama provides us with a look at where our society is headed. From the beginning, Futurama has always made an effort to make fun of the cult followings of our time and this episode did not fall short. With quick humor such as everyone quickly throwing away their phones to get the new eyephone to waiting "online" to get the phone to the viral video sensations, not one part of our modern day society isn't thrown back at us via jokes that are funny because of their truth. The return of Mom also provides for a hilarious look at how businesses depend on what we do with their product to make something happen. This truly was one of Futuramas best episodes to date. From recognizing our dependency on our phones and even our want to gain the most followers online, this episode is truly one that sets the tone of how Futurama should flow and will want to keep us returning for many weeks to come.

Surprised at fan reaction

I was pretty surprised to learn that a lot of the fan base hates this episode. I think that it was a mostly smartly written episode that has only gotten better over time.

The One With Twitter...
taylorkingston31 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. It's funny to see Season 5 be older and then Season 6 be brand new. Even though it's based in the future, this season still seems more current.

In this episode, a Twitter-like application is blowing up all over. Just like it was in real life. Bender and Fry make a bet to see who can get more followers. I wonder who really would? The application is one their new eyePhones, which, obviously, is a play on iPhones. It's actually a phone that goes into their eyes, though. But what they don't realize is that this is really an evil plan by Mom and her evil corporation. They want to unleash a new virus onto people's brains and they think this competition might be a great way to start their reign of terror. How rude?

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10.

A weaker episode that hasn't dated well
Tweekums29 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode sees everybody clamouring to get the latest EyePhone… The latest product of the Mom Corporation. As its name suggests it is a phone that is inserted into the eye socket! Using this uses can share their thoughts with followers on 'Twitcher' a site similar to Twitter. Fry only has a few followers but Bender is hugely popular thanks to his racy material. Convinced that he can overtake Bender he accepts a bet; the winner is the first to get a million followers and the loser must swim in a pool full of goat vomit/excrement. It is clear that Fry is going to lose; that is until he learns Leela's embarrassing secret… she has a singing boil named Susan on her backside. She begs him not to share this with anybody but the thought of losing the bet leads him to post a video of it on Twitcher. Soon both he and Bender are getting close to a million followers. They don't know that Mom has a dastardly plan; when somebody gets a million followers the phone will release a virus that effectively turns them into zombies.

I enjoy most episodes of Futurama but really didn't like this one. The joke about Leela's singing boil was clearly a reference to singer Susan Boyle… a joke that is cruel rather than funny. Not only was that not particularly funny it has dated terribly now that Susan Boyle isn't news. The EyePhone plot line produces more laughs but even this has dated somewhat as more smart phones have entered the market. On the plus side the gag about disposing of dangerous waste in the third world, here an actual planet, was effective and while rather crude the goat was pretty funny in a disgusting way. Overall rather disappointing.

A clunky attempt at satire
alexgwalker-371096 January 2018
An episode that is light on comedy and wit and relies on tired jokes about the spread of technology. Despite slurm being a coke or Pepsi reference, the eyephone feels a little on th me e nose
