Documentary producer Chiemi Karasawa ("The Betrayal - Nerakhoon") makes his directorial debut with "Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me," about the Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress. The 87-year-old is most known for her performance in Stephen Sondheim's 1970 musical "Company," as well as her more recent part as Jack Donaghy's mother Colleen on NBC's "30 Rock." Karasawa, who shares the same hairdresser with Stritch, tells the story of the still-working legend through interviews with Nathan Lane, Tina Fey and others. What it's about: "Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me" is an intimate, entertaining and unflinching portrait of the Broadway legend on and off-stage as she approaches her 87th year. About the filmmaker: This is my directorial debut, so take it easy on me. I've been producing documentaries exclusively for the past 7 years, including: "Billy the Kid," "The Betrayal (Nerakhoon)", "Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak," "Elevate," "Love Etc." and "Harry Dean.

With last week's Thanksgiving almost immediately forgotten by some thanks to the consumer call of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Indiewire's latest curation of Hulu's Documentaries page takes a step back. These films spotlight the power of individuals to give of themselves and their time to make an impact on others' lives -- a potent reminder of volunteerism and activism as we head into December's holiday season. Watch these docs now for free and get inspired! A school's pen pal program has inspirational results in Dave Lamattina and Chad N Walker's "Brownstones to Red Dirt." Students from Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy area communicate with peers an ocean away in Sierra Leone, learning about the aftermath of that country's decade-long civil war, and decide to mobilize the Brooklyn local community to help. Anne Buford's "Elevate" demonstrates the opening up of horizons made possible by outside support. The...

Title: Elevate Director: Anne Buford As basketball has spread across the world, so too has the view of it as a unique opportunity, and a tool for upward social mobility. While sports — and in particular boxing, baseball and soccer — have long offered a potential path out of the proverbial ghetto for socioeconomically disadvantaged kids, hoops entered this phase of its public trajectory only fairly recently. As a global phenomenon, the National Basketball Association now attracts interest from Europe, Asia and beyond. Anne Buford’s engaging documentary “Elevate” takes a look at the professional aspirations of a handful of West African kids. At the center of the movie is Amadou Gallo Fall, a former...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Sidewalls Trailers Donde esta Wally? What I like about filmmaker Gustavo Taretto's feature about fate and how people come together looks just as refreshing...

"The rest of the world views us as lazy," says a coach to teen basketball aspirants at the Seeds Academy, a boarding school in Dakar, Senegal. "You have to be our ambassadors." The pressure is on, but none of the young subjects followed by first-time documentarian Anne Buford in "Elevate" know if they can deliver. Shipped to classy American schools to continue their assimilation, the ensemble works and plays hard ...

Anne Buford’s inspirational documentary “Elevate” follows four young Senegalese men (Assane, Byago, Dethie and Aziz) as they aim for a shot at college basketball and perhaps, one day, the NBA. The film explores the emotional aspects of having such high expectations for one’s self and how with hard work and determination anything is possible.
“Elevate” focuses on the Sports for Education and Economic Development in Senegal, or the Seeds Foundation. Spearheaded by Amadou Gallo Fall, a native of Senegal and now the director of scouting and vice president of international affairs for the Dallas Mavericks, the foundation plucks a small number of young men from towns in Senegal and takes them to a training camp where they work on their game and continue with their education.

Anne Buford, director of the charming and inspirational Elevate, sat down with me during SXSW 2011. In this interview, we had the chance to discuss basketball, life in a sports-obsessed family in Kansas, and mostly the kids portrayed in the documentary. This was an interview that I could have transcribed, but I felt that the most positive attribute about Buford is her passion for the kids and her enthusiasm about the project, which is why I felt posting the audio was the best bet for this interview. Please excuse the (at times loud) background noise and my monotonic voice.

This is the primary mission of the Seeds Academy (Sports for Education and Economic Development in Senegal). Amadou Fall, former scouting director for the Dallas Mavericks, started a school that aims to help African teenagers obtain an American education in hopes that they can one day go to college in America and possibly play in the NBA. Director Anne Buford saw a compelling story unfold in four teenage basketball players and documented their journey from the academy to when they obtained their visas to come to the Us.

That the SXSW Film Conference and Festival (or “South by,” as preferred by insiders), which runs March 11-19 in Austin, Texas, has changed over the past 10 years is self-evident. Once solely a haven for music lovers, the program is now also bursting with interactive new media events, prominent national sponsors and a film slate so solid that distributors have started coming here with an eye to acquisitions.
With truly original and interesting programming across sections named Narrative Feature Competition, Documentary Feature Competition, Headliners, Spotlight Premieres, Emerging Visions, 24 Beats per Second, Festival Favorites, Lone Star States, Sx Global and Special Events, there’s too much in store to provide the perfect playbook, but be sure to keep an eye out for the following baker’s dozen:

...Or we should say "Cheat Sheets" since this year's SXSW Film Festival boasts over 140 films, requiring more than just one page to cover every single one of the narrative and documentary features that will be playing in Austin from March 11th through 19th. Meanwhile, there will be plenty of action during these next two weeks on IFC.com where, in addition to our live video page, Matt Singer (@mattsinger) and I (@mfrushmore) will be filing reviews and interviews throughout the film festival.
