The subplot of Toofer discovering he was only hired as a writer because of NBC's Diversity Initiative is based on the real circumstances behind the hiring of Donald Glover. In a 2018 "New Yorker" profile of Glover, Tina Fey confirmed that, while she admired Glover's talent immediately, NBC's Diversity Initiative "made him free" as his salary did not come out of the "30 Rock" budget. At the time he was hired, he was just 23 years old and living in the NYU dorms as a residential advisor. Glover later left the show to star on Community (2009) before launching a musical career and his own series, the award-winning Atlanta (2016).
