What combination of things makes even less sense than a tornado made of sharks? How about a post-apocalyptic zombie Western made by and starring boy bands? Sheer absurd randomness (and its attendant clickbait) seems to be the well from which Syfy's Dead 7 was sprung, the latest original movie from the network that has brought us such single-serving classics as Sharknado, Dinocroc vs. Supergator and Titanic II. Like many that have come before it, this genre mash-up walks the crooked line between knowing how bad it is and taking itself just a tad too seriously.

More Best Picture Oscar winners have had sequels than you may think. This lot, in fact...
There’s still an element of snobbery where sequels to certain films is concerned. Whereas it’s now almost compulsory to greenlight a blockbuster with a view of a franchise in mind, it’s hard to think of most Best Picture Oscar winners being made with a follow-up in mind. Yet in perhaps a surprising number of cases, a sequel – or in the case of Rocky, lots of sequels – have followed.
These cases, in fact…
All Quiet On The Western Front (1930)
Followed by: The Road Back
Don’t be fooled into thinking sequels for prestigious movies are a relatively new phenomenon. Lewis Milestone’s 1930 war epic All Quiet On The Western Front, and its brutal account of World War I, is still regarded as something of a classic. A solid box office success,...

An exact replica of the Titanic, the ship that sank in the Atlantic Ocean after hitting an iceberg in 1912, will set sail in 2018. According to the Independent, the Titanic II will look identical to the original ship, although it will be 13 feet wider with an updated hull to meet modern maritime safety requirements. And like the original, the new Titanic, created by Australian businessman Clive Palmer and his company, Blue Star Line, will offer first, second and third class tickets. Well, this sounds risky. After years of discussion, it's clear that businessman Clive Palmer will never let go of his dreams for a real-life Titanic II: it's officially setting sail in 2018. Plans were first announced for the Titanic II back in April 2012, around the 100-year anniversary of the tragedy. The timing was intentional: Titanic II will look just like its predecessor, offering the first-, second- and third-class booking options, plus some modern updates on the inside. However, this cruise will go from Jiangsu, China, to Dubai, instead of across the Atlantic. Palmer's company, the Blue Star Line (a nod to the White Star Line,...

To end a week celebrating New Who's 10th birthday, here's a bumper list of Doctor Who titbits from Russell T Davies' The Writer's Tale...
We’ve touched on why The Writer’s Tale, the 2008 (expanded in 2010) compendium of correspondence between Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies and journalist Benjamin Cook, deserves a space on your bookshelf here.
In short, The Writer’s Tale is both a screenwriting masterclass and an unparalleled look behind the scenes of new Doctor Who. As well as following the production triumphs and emergencies as the show lurches “from one crisis to another”, it lets you witness story ideas being created in the wild. See pivotal Doctor Who moments tottering unsurely out of Davies’ mind like new-born giraffes and watch them transform into sleek, galloping beasts of majesty! Think of it like a classy David Attenborough doc on storytelling, with bonus David Tennant photos and chat about Tony from Skins.

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has been in the news during the last few years for the most bizarre things. He first announced that he's building a modern replica of the original Titanic ship with plans of completing the trip that was attempted on that disastrous maiden voyage. He then said that he's planning to make a real-life "Jurassic Park" that will contain animatronic dinosaurs. And now, he's talking about another project, one that will be bigger than the second highest-grossing film of all time. According to Palmer, he's developing a 24-part documentary about the construction of his Titanic ship. That will be followed by a fictional theatrical film in which the story will take place aboard his Titanic. Palmer will have a cameo in the movie, but a director and stars won't be revealed until late next year. "It will be about Titanic II's first voyage. It will be...

Australian Clive Palmer pretty much defines the term "eccentric billionaire," from his grand plans to create an elaborate real-life "Jurassic Park"-style resort populated with animatronic dinosaurs to his long-gestating vision to build an exact replica of the Titanic, which is set for completion and its maiden voyage sometime in 2016.
But Palmer isn't stopping there. His latest plan is to turn the creation of Titanic II into a theatrical spectacle, complete with a 24-part documentary about the construction of vessel, followed by a fictional dramatic film set aboard the ship that includes a cameo from Palmer himself. The billionaire told Australia's Sunshine Coast Daily that details about a director and stars for the movie would be announced sometime late next year, and took the opportunity to make an eye-raising boast about the film's potential success.

Last year Australian billionaire Clive Palmer announced plans to build the Titanic II, a full-scale replica of the famed sunken ocean liner that would stand as testimony to man’s indomitable spirit in the face of overwhelming symbolism, and the timeless determination of the proud to die ironically. And while Palmer willfully ignored the lessons about building full-scale Titanic replicas we all learned in The Asylum’s Titanic II, it seems he’s determined to tempt fate even further by also building another Titanic II movie: The Herald Sun reports that Palmer is planning not one but two films about ...

While James Cameron is busy focusing on the sequels to “Avatar,” Australia’s Herald Sun is reporting that mining billionaire Clive Palmer is intent on squaring off against Cameron’s previous billion-dollar blockbuster, “Titanic.” Last spring Palmer announced his intention to build an exact replica of the ill-fated cruise ship as the flagship vessel of his cruise company and dub it the Titanic II. Not content with courting ironic disaster, Palmer has decided to make not one, but two films about his new ship. The first, a documentary, would detail the construction of the life-sized replica. The second film—fictional, of course—will be set on his massive new oceanliner, with Palmer boldly promising that his "Titanic" movie “should be a lot better movie than” Cameron’s hugely successful film. “The script’s looking pretty good at the moment—it’s not finished but it’s very interesting,” said Palmer...

I don't know a single person who is the least bit excited for Planes. It's like a slightly-more-professional version of one of those crappy Asylum movie knock-offs, like Transmorphers or Titanic II. Except, y'know, it's by the same company. And it's getting a theatrical release. If you thought it just wasn't crappy enough, though, don't worry because Lionsgate has you covered with Wings, a CGI movie that looks like a low-end Playstation 2 game. Trailer after the jump.

Scientists have assured us that the genetically engineered resurrection of the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park” could never happen in real life, but that hasn't stopped one eccentric billionaire from attempting the next best thing. Australian mining magnate Clive Palmer -- who seems to be a living version of John Hammond, the man who builds the original Jurassic Park in the film -- has plans to fill two parks with hundreds of robotic, life-size dinosaurs who will heave their chests, swing their tails, and blink their eyes. One park, Palmer Coolum Resort on Australia's Sunshine Coast, will feature 165 of the animatronics, including Jeff the T-Rex, who already resides there along with an omeisaurus named Bones. The other resort, to be built in central China, will be home to 117 more of the dinosaurs. “If you've seen Jeff and Bones, well you haven't seen anything yet,” Palmer said. Though local Australian news sources...

Earlier today we told you about a billionaire who's using his Scrooge McDuck-level of wealth to build his own Jurassic Park and Titanic II. Next up we have the story of Ken and Carol Schultz, whose home theater is way swankier than yours. Consider this round two of what would you do if you possessed an insane amount of money. The La Times reports that when the Schultzes were planning the remodel of their 10,000-square-foot San Diego-area home, they decided they would spare no expense when it came to their home theater with seating for eight. So, they set aside $500,000 for walnut-paneled walls, custom built armchairs (complete with heat and massage capabilities) a Runco 3-d-capable projector (priced at $100,000), and a top of the line device from Prima Cinema Inc. that allows them to stream first-run movies at home. No, James Cameron hasn’t gone crazy and penned a sequel to his seafaring tragedy – though given his recent career we wouldn’t be too surprised if he had. This is an actual ship, and it’s actually being built – in China – ready for its maiden voyage in 2016.
The ship is being designed to look identical to the original Titanic in almost every way possible. Except for a modern hospital, a helipad and the precaution of actually having enough lifeboats this time around, the Titanic II will be a near perfect replica. Even the route of its voyage is the same as that of the original, departing Southampton and – fingers crossed – arriving in New York a little while later. Whilst the eccentric billionaire responsible for this plan couldn’t be coaxed into calling the ship ‘unsinkable’, he was happy to point out, “there are not so many icebergs in the North Atlantic these days.

Your decade-old “King of the World” fantasies with Leonardo DiCaprio just got one step closer to reality.
Australian billionaire Clive Palmer announced yesterday that he planned to build Titanic II, a “full-scale recreation” of the doomed ship that sank in 1912. Showing the above computer-generated blueprint, Palmer said the ship will have its maiden voyage in 2016, and will travel from Shanghai to Southampton, England, and then on to New York. Once it is up and running, Palmer plans to have the Titanic II — which, in keeping with the original, won’t have television or Internet — in business constantly.

It's the biggest Oscar winner of all time, but it's also a code word for disaster: Titanic. Now, an Australian billionaire plans to recreate the legendary ship, and charge $1 million for a first-class cabin when his replica Titanic II re-traces the original 1912 route of the great ship that went down. Once the new ship is built in China, its maiden voyage is scheduled for late 2016 and will hopefully go the full distance from England's Southampton to New York's West Side. Its furnishings, said its financier Clive Palmer, will include a Turkish bath (just like on the original) and the ornate...

All aboard the Titanic? If an Australian billionaire has his way, that won't be such a crazy thought. Tuesday, Clive Palmer unveiled a design for a new cruse ship, a full-sized replica of the Titanic. According to USA Today, he says the ship will be built in China and make it's first voyage in the third quarter of 2016.
One thing Palmer won't talk about is the expected cost of building the ship, however he says he's received a big response from people who wish to be passengers on the maiden voyage. In fact, he expects the ship to be so popular, that he'll have to build a Titanic III to meet demand.
Critics say the ship will likely have trouble attracting an audience after the first voyage, while others complain that the ship is a desecration to the memory of those who lost their lives aboard the original "ship of dreams.

If you've ever been walking down the movie aisle of a store and been confused as to why there were movies like Transmorphers, Paranormal Entity, or Titanic II on the shelves, the answer is The Asylum. It's a production company that specializes in so-called "mockbusters", straight to dvd rip-offs of major blockbuster films. Many wondered exactly how they could get away with it, but it turns out that now they aren't. They were forced to rename American Battleship, and now they are no longer allowed to call their newest film Age of the Hobbits.

Judge cites 'likelihood of confusion' between Tolkien adaptation and film by The Asylum – famous for Titanic II and Almighty Thor
The makers of forthcoming fantasy trilogy The Hobbit have won a temporary restraining order against a so-called "mockbuster" film accused of trading on the global publicity surrounding the release of the Jrr Tolkien adaptation.
California federal judge Philip Gutierrez ruled on Monday that Age of the Hobbits, from specialist independent studio The Asylum, was confusingly similar to Peter Jackson's return to Middle-earth. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due for release on Friday in the Us and UK, but Age of the Hobbits now looks less likely to find its way into cinemas.

Saul Zaentz submits legal complaint against The Asylum for attempting 'to divert customers away from the Hobbit films'
When a Hollywood producer made legal threats against a Southampton pub named The Hobbit earlier this year ahead of the release of Peter Jackson's latest Jrr Tolkien fantasy trilogy, the drinking hole picked up support from thousands of members of the public as well as actors Ian McKellen and Stephen Fry. A university lecturer was recently prevented from using the word "hobbit" to describe Homo floresiensis, the "little people" discovered in Indonesia. Now Saul Zaentz and his studio partners have a new target, albeit one less likely to elicit sympathy from fans of hairy-footed Shire-dwelling homunculi: low-budget flick Age of the Hobbits.
Zaentz, along with studios Warner Bros, New Line and MGM, which collectively own the screen rights to Tolkien's works, yesterday filed suit against specialist "mockbuster" production company The Asylum.

I have to admit something. I’ve never been a fan of The Asylum or their mockbusters.
When they release a flick like Titanic II or Paranormal Entity to coincide with a bigger release, to me it comes off as cheap and parasitic, something right down there with porn titles.
I also have to admit something else, up until recently, I’ve never watched an Asylum title. I completely based my opinion on just looking at the DVD covers and my film snobbish personality. To sum up, I’m a jerk and a snob.
That’s not to say that I was wrong about The Asylum. I don’t know how much merit there is in titles like 2 Headed Shark Attack or I Am Omega, but after watching Richard Schenkman’s Abraham Lincoln Vs Zombies, I’m...

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer, whose estimated $8 billion fortune comes from investments in various natural resources companies, made headlines a few weeks ago when he released more details of his plan to build the Titanic II, which he promised would be, "every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology." Clive Palmer, the Australian billionaire who is building a modern-day replica of the Titanic, announced Tuesday (July 17) that his ship will retain the first, second and third-class divisions from the original ship but also include a new "safety deck," reports the Afp.
The original ship had nine decks that encompassed the first through third classes, but Titanic II will have a tenth deck, which will feature proper lifeboats, safety chutes and slides and new public common rooms.
"This is to ensure the vessel is fully compliant with the current regulations which require passenger ships to, as much as possible and practicable, keep the distance from the lifeboat launching area to the waterline as low as possible," says Palmer in a statement.
The plans for Titanic II also include new escape stairs and service elevators. This first voyage of teh ship is planned for late 2016, where it will sail from China to England.

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has announced at a press conference that he intends to build a high-tech replica of the famed ocean liner Titanic in a Chinese shipyard and launch its maiden voyage from England to New York in 2016.
"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," says Palmer in a statement. He adds that the project is a tribute to "the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original."
The Titanic II is the first of four new luxury ocean liners Palmer has commissioned Csc Jinling Shipyard to construct. While the replica Titanic will have four smoke stacks like the original, they will be purely decorative. The new ship will also include welding (the original had rivets) and a larger rudder and bow thrusters for better maneuverability. Titanic II will carry just under 1700 passengers.
"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," says Palmer in a statement. He adds that the project is a tribute to "the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original."

Let’s hope the second trip ends better than the first! According to the Boston Herald, Australian billionaire Clive Palmer announced Monday that he plans to build a high-tech replica of the Rms Titanic for a scheduled 2016 voyage from England to New York. ”It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic,” said Palmer, who noted that the major difference will be the ship’s “state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems.” Palmer said he intends the project to be ”a tribute to the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original Titanic.

Those inmates running The Asylum stopped taking their medication long enough to choose their next target, and it's a good one.
In a few weeks, The Asylum starts production on Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, an "homage" to the still-in-production Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter from director Timur Bekmambetov.
As you know, we're big fans of The Asylum, who are essentially the Weird Al of film production houses. They take on big-time, legitimate blockbusters or proven moneymakers and grind out a version with a slightly altered title and a batshit crazy story (examples include the Thor knockoff Almighty Thor and the Paranormal Activity knockoff Paranormal Entity).
Of course, this time, the movie being mocked already has a batshit crazy story, so it will be interesting to see how insane Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies turns out. The official synopsis is actually pretty tame as these things go: "While the brutal Civil War rages on,...

Omg, Robyn was on SNL this week and she knocked it out of the park. I’m going to have to include both her performances, she did “Call Your Girlfriend” and “Dancing on My Own.”
Misfits is coming back! To Hulu that is. To get prepared for the absence of a major character this season, watch this short film. Or just know that Nathan won’t be back, either way.
I love American Horror Story, it’s easily the best new show of the season. And if I had $4.5 million, I’d totally buy murder house, which is for sale. Remember Miike Snow? Ok, it was only two years ago, it’s not like they’ve been on hiatus for 10 years or anything. But...

Here is your early warning that The Asylum will be trying to capitalize on another blockbuster release. This time Darren Lynn Bousman's 11-11-11 is being clearly copied to swindle wayward buyers out of their hard earned dollars. The Asylum's doppelganger this time is 11/11/11 and unbelievably, they have another title copying Bousman's film called 11/1/11. Notice the removal of one digit here folks. All three films involve themes of a spiritual apocalypse, with The Asylum's version much lower budgeted.
This reviewer would love to interview someone at The Asylum to find out how well these copies perform financially. Apparently they are successful as this film production and distribution company has created dozens of films that copy blockbustes. To test your film knowledge, try to identify the films copied in the following titles: Battle of Los Angeles, Paranormal Entity, Transmorphers, Titanic II, The Terminators and The Day the Earth Stopped. How well did yo do?...

The Asylum has actually been on a roll lately with the wonderfully ludicrous 2012: Ice Age and the surprisingly decent Born Bad. Will the streak continue with a 3D ghost flick, more monster sharks, and a mockbuster with the exact same title as its theatrical counterpart?
We begin with A Haunting in Salem 3D, the latest 3D haunted house movie from The Asylum following 2009’s Haunting of Winchester House, a film I found to be as boring as its 3D was useless. Hopefully they improved things in both categories.
When the new sheriff of Salem, Massachusetts discovers that he is the victim of a centuries-old curse, he must protect his family from the vengeful ghosts that torment his home.
Paranormal Entity and Titanic II helmer Shane Van Dyke directs Bill Oberst, Jr., Courtney Abbiati, Jenna Stone, and Nicholas Harsin from a script by H. Perry Horton.

Director: Trey Stokes. Review: Adam Wing. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the video store, The Asylum is back, and it’s bringing with it a Dick called Moby. The masters of the ‘mockbuster’ show no sign of letting up, but lets not give them too much credit. From the studio that gave us Transmorphers, Mega Piranha and Titanic II, comes a modern day reworking of a literary classic. Herman Melville must be spinning in his grave right about now. Moby Dick follows the adventures of the crazed Captain Ahab (Barry Bostwick) on his bloodthirsty mission for vengeance. Equipped with the most high-tech weaponry known to man, nothing will get in his way as he battles against nature, society and his own inner demons on a collision course with the deadliest beast the oceans have ever known. Batten down the hatches and hold on for...

Poor Mark Wilkinson. He bought a secondhand, 16-foot cabin cruiser boat for about $1600. It was a fixer-upper, but he was more than ready to take it for a ride along the south coast, near his home in the UK. He did a little fishing in Lyme Bay, but as he progressed on his maiden voyage, a six-inch hole in the fiberglass hull caused the boat to sink stern first. "The funny thing about it," said eyewitness Margaret O'Callaghan, "was that the name of the boat was Titanic II." "If it wasn't for the harbour master I would have gone down with the Titanic," said Wilkinson (we imagine with a cheeky grin). "It's all a bit embarrassing, and I got pretty fed up with people asking me if I had hit an iceberg." As the boat started to...

We here at Fangirltastic happen to love The Asylum. We love them for not giving a fuck about making really horrible movies and shamelessly ripping off Hollywood Blockbusters. As bad as something like 2010: Moby Dick or Titanic II is, these movies still provide you with a touch of humor that is difficult to find anywhere else. It’s the joyous feeling of ridiculous. That feel good moment that The Asylum encounters when they say, “yeah why not make a giant CGI sperm whale and make it look about as good as a large floating rock?” And they’re right, why not?
The latest Asylum product however has me shaking my head in disappointment. Anneliese: The Exorcist Tapes is for lack of a better word, boring. It’s excruciatingly boring in fact and provides about 3 seconds...

Even though it's Sunday, that's not stopping a few tidbits of news from creeping online, including this latest story about The Watching Hour, a new spec script from a pair of writers who are apparently the grandsons of Dick Van Dyke.
Per Deadline New Line closed a deal Friday night for The Watching Hour, a horror film written by Carey and Shane Van Dyke that will be produced by Mary Parent and Michael Connolly of Mad Hatter Entertainment. The spec's described as a home invasion film, only with aliens.
If the name Shane Van Dyke sounds at all familiar to you, it's because he cut his filmmaking teeth by helping to bring us the mockbusters Paranormal Entity, Titanic II, and Transmorphers: Fall of Man. Good to see that he escaped from The Asylum.
In any event The Watching Hour sounds intriguing even from that short description so rest assured as...

There has been A Haunting in Georgia, A Haunting in Connecticut, and there will be a The Haunting in New York, so it seems like A Haunting in Salem is the next best stop for a ghost story. Early details for this Asylum film talk of a "vengeful ghost" and a "centuries-old curse" (The Asylum). Also, Bill Oberst Jr. (Dismal) will star with Courtney Abbiati, Jenna Stone, and Nicholas Harsin. Production will begin soon with Shane Van Dyke (Titanic II) to direct. More details on this haunting thriller can be found below.
The short synopsis for A Haunting in Salem is here:

Release Date: August 23rd, 2011.

What if you wanted to knock-off Jonathan Liebesman's Battle: Los Angeles and you only had 1% of the budget? Well, you would still have 700K and you could name your film something very similar like Battle of Los Angeles. This is what The Asylum is known for and 700K is not the budget of their latest.
In 2007, The Asylum tried to capitalize on the blockbuster I Am Legend, with I Am Omega. The result was a decent film (I Am Omega Review). The Asylum has copied other looming big budget films like Transformers, with Transmorphers and James Cameron's Titanic with Shane Van Dyke's forgettable Titanic II (A Titanic II Review). How will Battle of Los Angeles fare? That depends on movie watchers inability to decipher the good, Battle: Los Angeles from the arguably bad, Battle of Los Angeles. The first trailer for the latter is below, courtesy of Quiet Earth.

The entire world was apparently turned on its head when alternative group The Arcade Fire beat the likes of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry for the Grammy of “Best Record of the Year.” A small triumph for the Pitchfork-crowd, it’s simultaneously a head scratching moment for apparently a lot of other Grammy viewers (those who wanted Gaga, Perry, or even Eminem to win). Thus, the creation of this special Tumblr, “Who Is Arcade Fire??!?”, which features Twitter rants from those perplexed as to who the band even is. (It’s their loss, however. But I must be honest -- I haven’t even gotten around to listening their award-winning “The Suburbs” just yet. I still haven’t even gotten around to listening to R. Kelly’s “Love Letter.

Today must be the day for news about bad direct-to-dvd movies. On top of The Scorpion King 3 news, fans of bad movies have one more to look forward to, although it's coming much sooner. The Asylum production studio (creators of such films like Titanic II, Snakes on a Train, Sunday School Musical, and Mega Pirahna) is bringing you a sequel to a film you probably never saw, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus. The title pretty much sums up the plot of the first film for you, as bad CGI creatures fight it out. But to top that, these filmmakers dug deep and are presenting Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus!
When I say these movies are bad...I mean terrible. Poor acting, worse special effects, and plot lines that make almost no sense are the normal for The Asylum's movies. They really take B-Movies to an all new level. Even so, there...

Arcade Fire appeared on SNL this past weekend and totally nailed it. Probably the most exciting music performance I’ve seen on the show. Let’s see if Florence and the Machine can one up them when they appear next weekend.
Speaking of amazing musical performances, Jimmy Fallon may not have the best late night show, but he has some really great moments. For the second week in a row, I have a clip from his show, but I just can’t resist! Jeff Goldblum and Biz Markie get together to perform “Just A Friend” and it’s kind of magical.

A straight to DVD movie released this year depicted the fate of "Titanic II". The movie, made by The Asylum, tells the story of a new super ship which repeats the Titanic's route 100 years later only to have a tsunami hurl an iceberg at the ship. Although at first you might think the movie is a prank it is actually the work of The Asylum. This Los Angeles-based studio makes low-budget, straight-to-dvd, effect heavy movies which are either homages or blatant covers of the movie. Wired has described their work as "uniformly dreadful films, notable mainly for their stilted dialogue, flimsy-looking sets (which are frequently recycled), and turns by faded stars such as Judd Nelson and C. Thomas Howell ... But in general, the Asylum's films aren't ironic or campy, and they're certainly not parodies. They are actually unnervingly earnest." They are essentially the kings of the "mockbuster" and have created...
