This Star Trek: Discovery review contains spoilers.
Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 5
Star Trek: Discovery reaches the midpoint of its final season with “Mirrors,” an hour that is probably the worst of the five installments we’ve seen so far. To be clear, the episode isn’t necessarily bad, per se, and those who’ve been with this show since the beginning have definitely sat through much worse than this during its run. But it is an hour that, at best, is pretty darn boring, and that can’t help but feel like a colossal waste of time when we have so few hours left with the characters whose stories we care about.
Look, most of us (read: me) expected this season to include a flashback-laden hour that explained the very obviously telegraphed, clearly semi-tragic backstory of the season’s villains, intended to make us reevaluate how we feel about...

Update: After “Homeland’s” David Harewood told The Guardian that actors should be able to “Black up” for roles, but warned “it’d better be fucking good,” the actor clarified in a statement to Variety, “I don’t support or condone Blackface. My own documentary on the subject can be found on the BBC website. It is a grotesque distortion of race and should always be condemned.”
Previously: Speaking to The Guardian, Harewood, who also serves as president of prestigious British drama school the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, said: “We’re at this strange point in the profession where people go: ‘Oh, you can’t play that role because you’re not disabled, or you can’t play that because you’re not really from there.’ The name of the game is acting.”
He added, “Yes, we’ve got to be representative, but I do think we have to be careful.

It has been known for a while that the new West End production of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, will be returning to the Duke of York’s Theatre from May 11 through August 3, with Jamie Lloyd directing. But, more importantly for some fans, it has been confirmed that Spider-Man star Tom Holland will be playing Romeo in the play, with Bad Education star Francesca Amewudah-Rivers co-starring as Juliet. And while all of this seems fine and dandy to us, some people are dissatisfied with the fact that Juliet will be played by a black actress and have taken to the Internet to express their anger in the most deplorable way.
The young actress has, thus, been the target of significant racial slander and abuse recently, which is an act that has to be condemned immediately. The producers, as well as some of Rivers’ colleagues, were quick to react,...

Exclusive: Jamie Lloyd, director of the history-making reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, reveals that his star Nicole Scherzinger initially “refused to consider” accepting his offer to play Norma Desmond in the show adapted from Billy Wilder’s 1950 classic.
“Nicole was not flattered,” he gasped, speaking to Breaking Baz backstage at the London theatre awards, held at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday night.
Lloyd says that the show’s “obviously associated with Glenn Close’s iconic performance and therefore people think about Norma Desmond being a much older woman.”
Mmm, that’s unlikely to amuse Glenn Close.
He tells me that Scherzinger, a one-time member of The Pussycat Dolls, called Norma Desmond a “has been” and stormed at Lloyd that she “still looks good under the bright lights.”
Lloyd encouraged her to study Don Black and Christopher Hampton’s book and lyrics and to listen to Lloyd Weber’s music.

Daniel Mays remembers Michael Douglas and Timothy Van Patten, the respectively star and director of new Apple TV drama Franklin, bursting into song whenever he appeared on set.
It came about because during the Franklin shoot in Paris, director Nicholas Hytner asked Mays to star at London’s Bridge Theatre as good old reliable Nathan Detroit in an immersive production of the classic Broadway fable Guys & Dolls by Frank Loesser, Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling.
Upon hearing this news, Douglas insisted, ”You’re doing it, Danny — no question about it.”
The adaption of Damon Runyon’s tales was Van Patten’s father’s favorite musical, “so then within the hour, more like a whole bloody second, every time I came on set, they kept playing ‘The Oldest Established [Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York], and Michael and Noah Jupe would join in.”
Even the French crew got in the swing of it.

Tom Holland’s above-the-title appearance in Romeo & Juliet will transfer to Broadway, according to an insider quoted in the UK press.
The Spider-man star’s return to London’s West End stage (where he starred in Billy Elliot The Musical as a boy) has seen tickets for the show at the Duke of York’s Theatre all sell out in under two hours.
Now, the UK’s Mirror newspaper reports that the Jamie Lloyd Company production will be transferring to New York once it finishes in London in August, following a 12-week run.
The Mirror quotes a source saying:
“Romeo & Juliet will head to Broadway after its London run, with details to be announced in due course. While director Jamie Lloyd has made a name for his minimalist adaptations of classic texts, the headline grabber for what is essentially yet another production of Romeo & Juliet is undoubtedly its leading man.

For all of the artistic challenges posed by filming an entire documentary inside a video game, you’d think that it would at least be a lighter logistical lift for filmmakers. There’s no need to acquire permits, haul heavy equipment to remote locations, or wrangle large film crews. But when Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls decided to stage a production of “Hamlet” inside of “Grand Theft Auto Online” during the final months of the Covid-19 pandemic and make a documentary about the experience, they quickly found that making art inside of the game was more complicated than it looks. The biggest challenge? Convincing online strangers playing the famously violent game not to shoot them while they rehearsed and filmed.
“It’s as challenging as it would have been when Shakespeare was putting on a new production at the Globe,” Grylls told IndieWire in a recent conversation. “He didn’t...

This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live episode 2.
If there’s one thing that AMC’s The Walking Dead universe loves, it’s a time jump. While the first few seasons of the comic book adaptation were easy to follow, we were then hit with multiple skips through time, and fans were left scratching their heads as they fit together an increasingly confusing narrative.
Featuring the much-hyped return of Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira as Rick Grimes and Michonne, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live brings the star-crossed lovers together after years apart. Unfortunately for those who were expecting a simplistic Romeo & Juliet with zombies, The Ones Who Live has already hit us with multiple time jumps. Sigh, it’s time to consult The Walking Dead timeline again.

The humble beginnings of Matt Stone and Trey Parker's "South Park" are nothing short of inspiring, with two friends crafting a stop-motion short film that would evolve into one of the most popular and longest-running shows in television history. "The Spirit of Christmas" was first released in 1992 (colloquially referred to as "Jesus vs. Frosty") and again in 1994 as a Christmas card (colloquially known as "Jesus vs. Santa" to differentiate) Fox executive Brian Graden had commissioned to send to his friends. Parker and Stone then developed the characters and the mountain town setting into what would become "South Park," and the rest is history.
This timeline certainly makes "South Park" sound like one of those dreamy Hollywood Cinderella stories in which two unknown comedy animators were plucked from obscurity to become billionaires and one award shy of earning Egot status. However, this narrative ignores the countless other projects -- both...

Labyrinthine corridors connect the sprawling worlds within The Grill, a traditional eatery by the hustle and bustle of Times Square in “La Cocina.” Open one door, and you are in the kitchen, a boiler room of rage and frustration tamed only by the often frail bonds of camaraderie; turn a corner, and you’re spat straight onto the busy restaurant floor, where waitresses in matching outfits move like a ballet between tables occupied with birthday boys and men as foreign to politeness as hawks are to the sea.

Tom Holland will star as Romeo in a new version of Romeo & Juliet in the West End this spring.
The play will be directed by Jamie Lloyd, the director of the retooled Sunset Boulevard, starring Nicole Scherzinger, as well as the minimalist versions of A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain and Betrayal, starring Tom Hiddleston, on Broadway. Additional casting for the production, which calls itself a “pulsating new vision of Shakespeare’s immortal tale of wordsmiths, rhymers, lovers and fighters,” has not yet been announced.
Before landing the role of Spider-Man in the Marvel films, Holland made a name for himself as one of the young stars of Billy Elliot: The Musical in the West End. He most recently appeared in the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room, and has starred in films including Uncharted, opposite Mark Wahlberg, and The Devil All the Time and Cherry.

Tom Holland will tackle the Bard this spring when he plays Romeo in director Jamie Lloyd’s West End production of Romeo & Juliet.
Lloyd and Holland made the announcement this morning. Romeo & Juliet will run at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Saturday, May 11 through Saturday August 3. Additional casting, including Juliet, was not announced, nor whether the production will follow the path of other Lloyd hits – including the pared-down stagings of A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain and Betrayal with Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox and Zawe Ashton, to name two – with an eventual move to Broadway.
Holland, though best known for his leading role in the Spider-Man film franchise and, more recently, as the star of the Apple TV+ limited series The Crowded Room, actually got his show business start on the stage, when at age 11 he landed a supporting part in the West End production of Billy Elliot: The Musical.

Tom Holland, like a lot of the other Marvel stars, tries to dabble in parts that are different from their superhero counterparts. After the gigantic response of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Holland would play a more intense and dark role in AppleTV+’s psychological drama, The Crowded Room. The role would take a toll on the actor and he proclaimed he would take a year off of acting. Holland stated, “I love the learning curve of becoming a producer. I’m no stranger to hard work. I’ve always sort of lived by this idea that hard work is good work. I really enjoyed it, but then again, the show did break me. There did come a time where I was sort of like, ‘I need to have a break.’ I disappeared. I went to Mexico for a week and had some time on a beach. And I’m now taking a year off,...

Dolly de Leon realized she needed to say goodbye.
The Filipino actress who landed on Hollywood’s radar last year with her turn in “Triangle of Sadness” as Abigail, a toilet cleaner who becomes the domineering leader of the pampered survivors of a cruise ship disaster, had become so deeply entwined with her character that it was starting to take a toll.

The story of Romeo & Juliet has been told countless times on the stage and on the screen, but Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 adaptation dared to be a radical retelling of the tale, transforming the Montagues and Capulets into warring mafia families in a modern-day beach town while retaining most of Shakespeare’s original story elements. The movie, though well received at the time, wasn’t a huge box office hit, but it’s gone on to become a cult classic, in part because of its two stars, young actors who have gone on to great acclaim over the course of their careers: Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. While many actors don’t dare mess with Shakespeare, hewing true to the Bard’s original intentions, DiCaprio told us he didn’t mind taking the story and adapting it to a modern setting. Combining Irish music, charisma, and a ghost's unfinished business made it feel like Fall.
Many ghosts have unfinished business. It's a well-known trope in murder mysteries, and Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Murder in G Major expanded on it with detailed characters and picturesque Irish charm.
I was as captivated by the Irish scenery and music as I was trying to solve the mystery, and I love murder mysteries.
Tamera Mowry-Housley was delightful as the lead character, a former orchestra conductor Gethsemane Brown. She's easily charmed by Ireland and the tales surrounding Orla and Eamon's deaths, but she insists that ghosts don't bother her.
She tries to blow off her first encounter with the ghost Eamon McCarthy as a coincidence or a hallucination because if she actually saw him, there might be something wrong with her. Her dad saw visions, and they all pretended he didn't.
The film never covered any of Gethsemane's other family,...

When last we saw Kaitlyn Dever in a Disney+ (Hulu across the pond) film, she was getting romantically entangled in the story of Romeo & Juliet for comedy Rosaline. She probably wishes that was her biggest problem now she's facing off against threatening extraterrestrials in new horror thriller No One Will Save You, due later this month. Check out the trailer:
Writer/director Brian Duffield, who last made Spontaneous here goes full Close Encounters for the story of lonely young woman Brynn, who normally spends most of her time shut in at home.
But she's forced to draw on her considerable reserves of courage and adaptability when aliens invade – home invasion meets nasty space creatures – and Brynn must fight back.
"I think there's a deeply buried feeling that every alien invasion movie could turn out to be true because they remain such an unknown in our daily lives," Duffield says in a statement.

Three years after the adoption of Florida’s Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking Standards, a new state law championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), has caused some school districts to remove many written works deemed sexually explicit. Hillsborough County took this step more recently by telling teachers that they were only allowed to assign excerpts of Romeo & Juliet, rather than the entire play.
Several of Shakespeare’s works involve vulgar puns and innuendos, and in Romeo & Juliet specifically, it is suggested that the two protagonists have premarital sex.
Copies of Shakespeare’s works still will be available for checkout from school libraries.
The school district has clarified its stance in a statement: “First and foremost, we have not excluded Shakespeare from our high school curriculum. Students will still have the physical books to read excerpts in class. Curriculum guides are continually reviewed and refined throughout the year to...
