Exclusive: Jar Pictures has unveiled a slate of upcoming productions headed by DoP Shanker Raman’s directorial debut Gurgaon and Gaurav Saxena’s feature version of his celebrated short film, Rangzen.
Ten-minute short Rangzen (which means freedom in Tibetan) premiered in the Generation Kplus competition at this year’s Berlin Film Festival and was also voted best international short at the UK’s Raindance Film Festival.
The feature will expand on the story of a Tibetan boy in Dharamshala coming to terms with his refugee identity.
Raman’s noir drama Gurgaon spotlights gender prejudice in the ‘new town’ of the film’s title, which is located close to New Delhi. Aamir Bashir and Pankaj Tripathi have been cast in the film, which is scheduled to start shooting early next year.
Raman describes Gurgaon as “a cautionary tale about social fragmentation that disintegrates first the community, then the family, and ultimately our sense of humanity.”

Exclusive: German production company Neue Mediopolis Filmproduktion has boarded Aamir Bashir’s Winter as co-producer.
Produced by India’s Jar Pictures, Winter was selected for this year’s edition of Nfdc Screenwriters’ Lab. The second film in a trilogy, following Bashir’s Autumn (Harud), it tells the story of a Kashmiri village shawl weaver whose husband has abandoned her to join the militants.
Neue Mediopolis’ Alexander Ris said he was attracted to the project by the universal themes in the story. “After reading the script, it was clear that I should board the project. It’s a strong script and Aamir is willing to make it even stronger. I’m always looking for universal stories in a local setting with local people,” said Ris.
The project will be the first Indian co-production for Neue Mediopolis, which recently co-produced Huseyin Karabey’s Come To My Voice (2014), with Turkish and French partners, and produced...

The first leg of the Nfdc Screenwriters’ Lab ran in Sarajevo from August 19-23. DearCinema introduces the selected projects to its readers:
Winter by Aamir Bashir
Aamir Bashir
Tell us more about your project.
Winter is the second installment of what I hope will be a trilogy. It is the story of a village woman in Kashmir whose husband is a militant. She is a shawl weaver, a traditional Kashmiri skill, that helps her fend for herself. By juxtaposing this traditional craft with the current conflict, it is an exploration of questions of identity, love, duty and freedom through a woman’s eyes.
At what stage of development is it?
We have a screenplay and an Indian producer in Jar Pictures.
What are your expectations from Screenwriters’ Lab?
I am hoping to fine tune my script and for the first time get an outside/objective view from my mentors. Writing is an insular exercise,...

Shanker Raman
D earCinema profiles the six screenwriters who are participating in Nfdc Screenwriters’ Lab at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival.
Screenwriters’ Lab, a 2-part workshop conducted by the National Film Development Corporation (Nfdc) is designed to prepare screenwriters with original Indian stories for working with the international filmmaking community.
Shanker Raman answers five questions about his project “My Brother the Salesman, and I”:
Tell us about your project.
My project “My Brother the Salesman, and I” is a feature film set in the year 1984. It is an unflinching look at a middle class family’s dreams and aspirations. A large part of the story is from my memory of how things were during my early teens. We were a family of five, ever expanding, growing, trusting and hopeful through moments of change and peace. And then one day I felt alone. I was not a part of that environment any more.

After travelling to major international film festivals since its world premiere in Toronto in September 2012, the film will release in India on July 19.
In an interview to DearCinema, Kiran Rao denies rumours of starting a production house for indie films. But she maintains that she is working to set up an alternative cinema theatre besides working on a new script.

2012 turned out to be a year when a number of smaller or independent films made their way onto many Top Ten lists. But, as always, there are films that, for a number of reasons, risk being forgotten or overlooked, especially in a year where there are so many great films to choose from. Here are 13 films – 10 already released, 3 from the festival circuit – that you should have seen in 2012. It’s still not too late!
Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid (dir. Nila Madhab Panda)
It’s a massive shame that Nila Madhab Panda’s film didn’t get as much attention as his I Am Kalam, and also a shame that the film was released to DVD without English subtitles. Because Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid, like I Am Kalam, weaves an issue into a story about, and for, children and families, and the message it carries (about the value of women and...

The tranquil restraint with which Aamir Bashir and Shanker Raman depict the violence and madness in Kashmir in “Harud” (Autumn) is extra-ordinary. They achieve remarkable success in capturing the human side of the situation in Kashmir in a manner that we rarely see in Indian cinema.
Rafiq (Shahnawaz Bhat), an unemployed Kashmiri young man, attempts to cross the border possibly to join a militant training camp in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. His father, a traffic policeman, foils his attempt and brings him back. Rafiq lives a life of utter confusion and meaninglessness until he finds his lost brother’s camera.
Through his meandering life, the director shows us the shattered pieces of life in Kashmir: a mother waiting for her disappeared son, a man leaving for Ludhiana to sell shawls, a wannabe actor eager to get selected for a model hunt reality show, a Kashmiri pundit visiting Kashmir to distress-sell his ancestral...

Director Aamir Bashir’s directorial debut Harud has gained good recognition at the film festival circuits be it Toronto Film Festival (2010), 54th BFI London Film Festival, or Mumbai Film Festival (2010). However, the film, which has been ready since 2010, has failed to get a theatrical release until now.
And when the film was about to see the light of day on July 27, the director has been banned in terms of releasing the film’s promos in theatres. The Censor Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) has objected to a scene that has the protagonists against a backdrop that reads: Aazadi. Quite surprisingly, though the censor boards have taken objection to the promos, the film has approved and given a U/A certificate with the ‘so called’ controversial scene intact.

Kashmir, a hotbed of India-Pakistan territory dispute is the subject of Harud (Autumn). A young man, Rafiq (Shahnawaz Bhat), is seen trying to cross the border over to Pakistan only to be captured and returned to his home, to his parents. The village is under watchful eyes of heavily armed occupying Indian Soldiers. Rafiq's brother is one of the thousands of young men who have gone missing since the military insurgence. His mother is still hopeful that her older son will turn up some day and attends rallies by Apdp (Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons). His father, a traffic cop, having seen a lot of violence, is deteriorating fast due to post-traumatic stress disorder. Rafiq sleepwalks through the day with his friends who are dreaming about escaping from Kashmir. The jobs are scarce for young people and the news of cell phones arriving in town is quite possibly the...

"South Asia" takes in a lot of territory, both literally and culturally/aesthetically, so you've got to hand it to the fest and programmer Galen Rosenthal in particular: the diversity of themes, styles, and genres on display in this year's Saiff is downright stunning. The easier path would have been to pick a brow--low, middle, or high--and stick with it, thus playing it safe by appealing to a certain target audience and stacking the deck accordingly. Instead, this year's Saiff goes after movie-lovers in all shapes and sizes. There are wide-ranging approaches to filmmaking on display, from the boldly experimental to crowd-pleasing popcorn fare, and with both veterans and up-and-comers well-represented. Yet because of that same diversity, fest-goers may welcome some guidance, so with that in mind I offer up the following preview of what's on tap.

Sidharth Srinivasan's "Pairon Tale" (Soul of Sand) and Amir Bashir's "Harud" (Autumn) will be screened in the Discovery section of the Toronto International Film Festival (September 9-19).
"Pairon Tale" is produced with the support of Rotterdam International Film Festival's Hubert Bals fund. The film received funding under digital production category of fund in late 2008. Soon after being chosen for Hubert Bals funding, Sidhartha had told DearCinema- "Soul Of Sand (Pairon Tale) is a radical, self-produced feature, made against all odds on sheer belief and drive. My project was among 25 projects selected from over 350 proposals, so it really thrills and excites me that my almost "hand-crafted" venture has resonated with this prestigious Fund, reaffirming my faith in making the kind of cinema I believe in. Most importantly, the Fund provides automatic distribution in the Benelux territories, so my film has a genuine shot at crossing over..."
