- The chef'testants support First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign to fight childhood obesity. The chefs must take over the cafeteria at the local middle school and create healthy, kid-friendly meals spending only $2.68 per child, which is the reimbursement rate schools receive for each child who is eligible for free lunch through the National School Lunch Program.—Bravo Publicity
- Andrea goes into the day feeling confident, knowing Angelo is the front runner already.
Quickfire time Padma greets them with Sam Kass, the White House chef. They're doing a bipartisan-wich challenge in pairs. The winning team gets immunity.
Angelo says he'll have to close his NYC sandwich shop down if he doesn't win. And then Padma reveals the twist: they'll be competing in two aprons sewn together so each person can only use one hand. "Who got high and came up with this idea?" Tim says, calling it genius.
They're off.
Kenny the righty is with left handed Ed. Tracey is happy to be close to Angelo. Tim is with super nervous Alex, who constantly worries Tim's going to cut him.
Time's up. Angelo & Tracey serve seared flounder. Andrea and Kevin have a "Philly" Cuban sandwich. Amanada and Tamesha have sliced prosciutto with Swiss and pepper salsa. Alex and Tim made croque madame with ground lamb. Jacqueline and Stephen made vinegar onions with chicken and avocado. Kenny and Ed made Korean chili-rubbed Ahi tuna. Kelly and Arnold made a curry rubbed chicken. Tiffany and Lynne made a saltimbocca and goat cheese sandwich.
Sam thought Stephen and Jacqueline lacked creativity. The Saltimbocca lacked great texture.
He liked Tracey and Angelo's, which was "bright and lively" and Kenny and Ed's, which had a lot of flavor. The winners are: Tracey and Angelo.
Kenny is peeved after losing to Angelo again.
Elimination Challenge Sam tells them about Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign to fight childhood obesity. They're going to do a school lunch, using the public school budget: $2.68 per kid, $134 for 50 kids, minus $4 for labor.
The meal includes a main course, veggie, side dish and dessert. They'll be in teams of four and each person gets one item.
Angelo and Tracey get to pick who they want and take Kenny and Ed. Everybody else pairs up. They get 2 1/2 hours to cook later and an hour to prep before serving tomorrow.
Team 2 is Amanda, Tamesha, Jacqueline and Stephen. Amanda insists on making chicken.
Team 3 is Alex, Tim, Kevin and Andrea.
Team 4 is Tiffany, Lynne, Kelly, Arnold. Kelly wants to do pork carnita taco with pickled onions. Her teammates try to talk her out of the onions, but fail.
They go shopping.
Amanda won't give her up sherry when they're over budget. Jacqueline at one point has just milk and bananas for her dessert.
Back at the kitchen, Kelly makes whole grain tortillas.
Kevin, Tim and Andrea all have kids and work well together.
Tracey is making chicken burgers and Angelo is making celery with peanut butter mousse.
Jacqueline has issues with her bananas for pudding and adds sugar.
Tamesha suggests Amanda use tomato paste, but she's stuck on her sherry sauce for kids.
Arnold chafes at Kelly consistently saying "I" and forgetting about the team.
They're done.
Back at home, Tracey talks about raising a daughter with her girlfriend. She admits they eat fast food once a week.
Arnold tries to talk to Kelly about her claiming all credit. She's shocked. He worries he'll get bashed for just making salsa, when he helped other chefs.
The next day, they head to the school.
Angelo is stymied by a broken foam gun and goes to Kevin to borrow one. But they say no. Kenny notices that Angelo is only working on his own thing.
Tom drops by, mentioning that his mom ran a school lunch program for 20 years.
He thinks Kevin's melon skewers with yogurt foam is smart, because it'll fool the kids. Jacqueline mentions ending up with the short end of the budget. As Arnold is telling Tom about their meal, Kelly pipes up and says "I'm ultimately responsible for the carnitas." When he says they all worked together, Tom tells us he doesn't like that, saying it gives them room to hide when something goes wrong.
Stephen thinks Andrea's sherry choice is bad for kids.
It's lunch time. the judges arrive.
Alex and Andrea made cole slaw with yogurt and apple cider BBQ chicken. Tim's mac and cheese has a whole wheat crust with skim milk and low fat cheese. They like everything but the mac and cheese.
Tracey made chicken burgers. Angelo made fancy celery with peanut butter crudites. Ed made sweet potato puree. Kenny made bread pudding. The sweet potatoes have too much pepper. They don't think Angelo's celery counts as vegetables.
Lynne made black bean cake with crispy sweet potatoes. Kelly made her pork carnitas. Arnold made a roasted corn salad. Tiffany made carmelized sweet potatoes and sherbet.
Tom likes the taco and salad and is very happy with it.
Amanda made a braised chicken thigh in sherry jus. Stephen made sweet onion rice with tomato, carrots and green onions. Tamesha made bean and tomato salad. Jacqueline made her pudding.
Gail balks at "sherry jus." Tom thinks Jacqueline's pudding is too starchy and sweet. Gail says the rice is mushy.
Jacqueline finishes thinking they did well because the kids ate all her pudding.
Back to judges' table.
In the stew room, Kevin manages to fall asleep and snore.
Padma comes for Angelo's team and Jacqueline's team.
Padma tells them their teams had the worst menus of the day.
Stephen and Jacqueline blame the budget and she confesses to putting two pounds of sugar in her pudding. Sam wonders how Amanda on Jacqueline's team had the budget to buy sherry.
They tell Ed his sweet potatoes with chili pepper were too spicy. Tom asks Angelo if he would have done celery if he didn't get immunity.
All of a sudden the teams are going at each other, with Stephen starting it saying Kenny should have argued more for a vegetable. He fights back citing Jacqueline's two pounds of sugar. Then Amanda chimes in, asking if they know how bad peanut butter is for kids. And it's back to Amanda's sherry.
She says she just likes sherry. "There's a lot of things I like," Gail says. "I like vodka - I'm not cooking with it."
They're sent back to the stew room.
Sam says hands down Angelo's team had the worst menu and Kenny hurt the kids by not making a vegetable. They think they should have argued with the two with immunity.
In the stew room, Angelo tells Tracey he doesn't like Kenny.
Gail thinks Amanda's chicken was terrible.
They find things to like in both the other teams. Padma comes for Lynne, Tiffany, Kelly and Arnold.
They're the winners. Sam announces the winner: Kelly. She says she knows her team helped, but she did most of it.
Padma asks for Kenny, Ed, Jacqueline and Amanda. Tom recaps their sins.
The knife packer is: Jacqueline. The curse of the desserts lives on!
"I wish I had fought for more than 10 percent of the budget. It sucks to have the worst dish and the hardest dish but the least amount of ingredients," she says. "The kids reminded me of why I came here in the first place, and that was a gift. I think my family will be proud of me just for getting this far. I'm disappointed, but you have to live with the choices you make."
