"Behold, the dawn of a new age of warfare."
Netflix has released the first trailer for DreamWorks Animation's Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 5, and I'm pretty sure fans of the series are going to like what they see. There have been a lot of twists and turns in this series and that's going to continue as the Voltron Force is trying to figure out if their new ally, Prince Lotor, can be trusted or not. At the same time, they are trying to retake the galaxy from the Galra Empire.
Shocked by Prince Lotor coming to their rescue in the fight against the evil witch Haggar at the end of season four, the Paladins struggle with whether or not they can really trust him. Though suspicious, Team Voltron is able to liberate more rebels with the aid of Lotor’s intel. Just as things start to look hopeful, Zarkon strikes,...

In making the show suitable for American audiences, Voltron had some pretty hilarious ways of dealing with violence.
Hey, did you know the original Voltron was obsessed with death? No, no. Not that original Voltron. I’m talking about the Og of Og Voltron, Beast King GoLion. The original anime that was adapted to become Voltron in America. It had violence. Like, a lot of violence. Voltron of course removed most of it to make the series more appropriate for its intended kid audience.
(I wonder if the Voltron series that exists in universe of Voltron: Legendary Defender was similarly edited. By all accounts it looks like the American version though.)

Now if I were a snobby anime purist, this article would take the position that cutting out all this death and destruction neutered the show. That it should have kept it...

The lack of recent Transformers films has obviously left a big robot-sized hole in all our hearts. But fear not! Universal is just now developing a live-action Voltron film to fill that hole, and have even hired Watchmen scribe David Hayter to write the screenplay.
Voltron was a 1980s anime series that told the story of young pilots controlling massive Lion robots that form into the Voltron warrior and do battle on the planet Arus. Although the show only ran from 1984-85 in the States, Voltron was a bit of a cultural phenomenon in its own right, spawning a 1986 TV special Voltron: Fleet of Doom.
It later found a new incarnation as a computer-animated series Voltron: The Third Dimension, in 1998, and again as Voltron Force on Nickelodeon in 2011 (both series lasted only 26 episodes). The most recent small-screen version of the show, Voltron: Legendary Defender, premiered on Netflix this summer, with...

Last month we learned that Voltron would be making an epic comeback thanks to a series being developed by DreamWorks Animation for Netflix. This got me and a lot of other fans of the classic '80s pumped up to see what they will bring. Well today, we have the first poster for the series giving us a look at the logo and a silhouette of Voltron in the background. It’s pretty damn exciting stuff!
There’s still not much known about the new series, but it’s the first new Voltron series since Nicktoons’ Voltron Force in 2011, which was unfortunately a dud and only lasted one season. All we really know at this point is that the show will follow five teenagers who unite to save the world from evil by kicking ass in their robot lions that combine to form a giant robotic mech warrior with a giant ass sword.

Back in the fall of 2009, we told you about the emergence of a live-action Voltron movie by Atlas Entertainmentbased on the 1980’s cartoon series . The project has been floundering in Hollywood’s “development-hell” for years with various wishful producers seeking to revive the robot defender of the universe.
After a tussle over the rights over the television property and a bidding war between Relativity Media and Atlas Entertainment, the dust has finally settled to land the project to be developed by both Relativity and Atlas. Atlas’ Charles Roven (Man of Steel, The Dark Knight) and Richard Suckle (The International) and Kickstart Entertainment’s Jason Netter (Voltron Force, Wanted) will produce the project. Ted Koplar (Voltron Force) of World Event Productions, who sold the feature film rights, will executive produce. Not even a bidding war can take down the ‘Defender of the Universe’ as the live-action version of Voltron gets back on track with Relativity Media and Atlas Entertainment.
It looked like Voltron would finally be making it to the big screen way back when the concept art first appeared, but dollars and cents stalled the big screen adaptation of the 1984 animated series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, until Atlas and Relativity stepped in and optioned the film rights. Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer have been tapped to provide the script.
Just in case you’re a Voltron noob, the film is being based on Lion Force Voltron, the elite battle team that operates high-tech robotic lions that are capable of forming the giant mega-weapon know as Voltron, and not on the Vehicle Voltron team, which was never my favorite anyway.

I know we've been hearing about a big screen adaptation of Voltron for years, but now it looks like there is going to be actual movement on the film production. This past summer teased “Voltron” fans by offering as much evidence as anyone had ever seen that there would soon be a live-action adaptation of the beloved 1980s cartoon about a giant robot composed of smaller lion robots operated by people.
As producer Ted Koplar of World Events (the production company behind the original cartoon) told MTV News, “Voltron” “outperformed the Transformers” in its heyday, so naturally the thought of reprising the franchise has generated no small amount of interest from Hollywood. We even saw some leaked concept art of the titular robot amongst a decimated NYC. But if one sign of a movie being on its way proves it is—even more so than full color concept art—it’s a bidding war.

We told you last year that Atlas Entertainment picked up the rights for a Voltron live-action movie. There were many rumors of the project’s demise, which producers Richard Suckle and Ted Koplar quickly dismissed, and promised that they were on the cusp of securing an A-level screenwriter for the film, and since then they have reportedly hired the screenwriting team of Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Conan, Doctor Strange).
Additionally, Atlas is developing a new Voltron animated series called Voltron Force that will air on Nicktoons in 2011.
Now, JoBlo has gotten their hands on some concept art from the movie Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which is currently in development. Check them out below!
