NBC has put in development Whites, a comedy based on the UK format, from Matt Tarses (Scrubs), Will Arnett and Sony Pictures TV, where Tarses and Arnett’s Electric Avenue banner are under deals.
Written by Tarses, Whites’ U.S. adaptation is set in the fast-paced and hilarious kitchen at a beautiful restaurant in upstate New York. Roland White, a disgraced wunderkind of the New York culinary scene, has spent the past three years here in exile, and things are complicated when the owner hires Emily, a new pastry chef who is as gluten-free, farm-to-table and gender-neutral-pronoun-using as anyone on the planet.
Tarses executive produces with Arnett, his producing partner Marc Forman, Peter Principato of Artists First and the original series’ creators Oliver Lansley and Matt King.

When I started the Crypt of Curiosities, I did it with the explicit intention to introduce people to the weird, wild corners of genre cinema. Shaw Brothers’ Black Magic, Hammer mummies, hyper-violent anime, sadistic Spaghetti Westerns—it’s an exercise in peering into the odd expanses that deserve more attention. It’s about championing the under-championed.
So, admittedly, writing about one of the most recognizable, celebrated horror films ever made might seem a bit off. But there’s a catch. Because, like many films of its time, there were actually two versions of Dracula in 1931: Tod Browning’s iconic English-language one, and the much less beloved Spanish-language Drácula. While the former has gone on to become a classic, the latter has languished in relative obscurity, beloved by a small cult but otherwise alien to most viewers. So, I figured this would be a good opportunity to look at the two side by side,...

Single mom Polly (Sarah Chalke) needs a fresh start, and so she seeks help from her mom and dad. Whoops.
Chalke ("Scrubs," "Mad Love") plays a woman determined to be the "best single working mom in the universe" in "How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life)," which easily takes this season's crown for longest show title. She looks to her folks (Elizabeth Perkins and Brad Garrett) for support and a place to live, but mom and dad are pretty happy with their empty-nest life, and they don't see much upside into changing their ways for Polly and her daughter, Natalie (Rachel Eggleston).
Chalke is an expert at playing tightly wound characters, and Perkins is working some of the same self-centered vibe she did on "Weeds" (though without the nasty streak). Garrett, meanwhile, gets to work his deadpan in a single-camera comedy instead of playing to...

"Weeds" star Justin Kirk jumps over to NBC this fall in "Animal Practice," a comedy that seems to pose the question, "What if 'House' were a veterinarian?"
A partial answer is provided in this clip, which shows Kirk's Dr. George Coleman clashing with Dorothy Crane (Amy Huberman), a former girlfriend who's just taken over her family's animal hospital. Seems George is very good with his patients but doesn't much care for the humans who come with them.
The series also stars Tyler Labine ("Mad Love," "Reaper") and Bobby Lee ("MADtv"). Don't get too attached to Huberman, though; her role is reportedly being recast.
"Animal Practice" will air at 8 p.m. Et Wednesdays in the fall. What do you think of the clip?...

NBC is going big on comedies for next season. The network has already picked up three half-hour shows for 2012-13, and it's now adding two more -- "1600 Penn" and "Animal Practice" -- to its roster.
They join the previously picked up comedies "Go On," "The New Normal" and "Save Me," along with the drama "Revolution." The network will likely add a couple more dramas in the next few days before unveiling its schedule for next year on Monday (May 14).
"Animal Practice" (formerly called "Animal Kingdom") stars Justin Kirk ("Weeds") as a veterinarian who likes the animals he treats but tends to hate their owners. Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood ("The Sitter") created the show, which also stars Tyler Labine ("Reaper," "Mad Love"), Amy Huberman and Bobby Lee ("MADtv").

Exclusive: Jamie Tarses and her Fan Fare banner are staying at Sony Pictures Television with a new two-year overall deal. The decision for Sony to re-up Tarses is a no-brainier as she is the studio’s most prolific non-writing producer. Tarses has 3 series on the air, ABC comedy Happy Endings, which is expected to be renewed for a third season, TNT’s Franklin & Bash, which returns for a second season this summer, and the upcoming TBS comedy series Men At Work. Additionally, Fan Fare has 2 broadcast pilots, CBS drama Baby Big Shot and the NBC Hilary Winston comedy. Former NBC and ABC executive Tarses came to Sony in 2005 when she joined Gavin Polone at his Sony-based Pariah. After selling a few projects, including the TBS series My Boys, the two parted ways at the end of 2006 when Wme-repped Tarses launched her company Fan Fare and inked an overall deal with Sony.

The Good Wife cooks up an American Pie
The Good Wife is putting the ingredients together to bake us something truly delicious, borrowing the star of the American Pie film franchise (the main ones, not those terrible direct to DVD pieces of crap) for a guest-starring role. Jason Biggs, who will be a part of the fourth Pie film, American Reunion, landed the part of a lawyer on the CBS show. This won’t the Biggs’ first time working for CBS. Last season he starred in the sitcom Mad Love, along with Sarah Chalke and Judy Greer.
According to TVLine, Biggs’ lawyer character will be sitting in the defendant’s seat, something you rarely see in television. After refusing to release the name of one of his clients, Biggs’ character finds himself in the middle of a lawsuit. Unfortunately, no further information was given for the role or the episode he appears in.

It's easily one of the best movie premises of the year: a group of college kids go camping in the Appalachian Mountains and think they're being terrorized by a group of backwoods hillbillies – when, in fact, those hillbillies are just being friendly, and it's all a terrible misunderstanding.
So how did the filmmakers (including director and co-writer Eli Craig) do in executing this terrific, and terrifically funny premise?
Better than just okay. The movie mostly works, even if it's definitely not perfect.
What works best? Anyone who's watched the rise of Tyler Labine know that he's always the best thing in whatever project he's in, whether it was the decent supernatural comedy Reaper, the horrible sitcom Mad Love, or the stupid movie A Good Old Fashioned Orgy.
He's definitely the best part of Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil, playing something a little different from his trademark arrogant hipster-loser character. Here's he's a shy,...

Former "Breaker High" star Tyler Labine does his best Ryan Gosling (circa The Notebook) and shows off his wood-chopping skills in this first photo from upcoming dark comedy Cottage Country.
The two, of course, played best buds in the late-'90s TV series about kids who went to school on a cruise ship - is that what it was really about? - and while nothing much became of this Gosling character (As If) Labine has scored spots in shows like "Reaper," "Mad Love," "Boston Legal" and recently took top billing in horror-comedy Tucker & Dale vs Evil.
Now he takes the lead in Peter Wellington's ("Slings & Arrows") pitch-black family comedy that finds him accidentally offing his slacker brother Salinger with, you guessed it, an axe.
Oops.

The horror comedy genre is one that is so easily ruined. All too often, it relies too much on one genre while sacrificing the other and being all the weaker for it. It seems the horror comedy is on the cusp of having a resurgence and Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil just set the bar pretty damn high.
Tucker & Dale follows two brothers, played by Alan Tudyk (Serenity) and Tyler Labine (Mad Love, Reaper) as they set up their new vacation home in the hills of Virginia. Along the way, they encounter college students on spring break that get the entirely wrong impression and hijinks and death ensue. The film walks that thin tight rope between absurd humor and gruesome gorey deaths, and does an excellent job of still somehow being grounded in a real world I can believe in.

A TV Fanatic favorite will play a key role on the new season of Two and a Half Men.
Judy Greer, who we fell in love with at Comic Con, will recur on the CBS sitcom as the soon-to-be-ex-wife of Ashton Kutcher's character, Walden Schmidt.
On the September 19 premiere, we'll meet Walden and learn he's house hunting after recently splitting from his wife. Previews Jon Cryer to TV Guide Magazine:
"He is maladroit socially, which allows me to form a sort of mentor relationship with him. Which is of course, ridiculous, because my character is such a mess as a human being."
Greer, who starred on CBS' Mad Love last year, has actually appeared on Two and a Half Men before. In 2007, she portrayed Myra, a love interest for Charlie (Rip!), on two episodes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds continued to experience success on the producing front. Via their production shingle Dark Fire, Reynolds and his Dark Fire partner Allan Loeb sold the high school comedy Guidance to Fox and signed Mad Love’s Tyler Labine to star. Reynolds looked to reunite with his The Proposal co-star Sandra Bullock on the animated comedy And Then There Was Gordon, about an ordinary child with super-smart sibs. The upcoming sitcom ‘Guidance,’ the first project from Ryan Reynolds and Allan Loeb’s recently launched TV company DarkFire, has been bought by Fox, Deadline is reporting. DarkFire had a first-look deal for the show, which is being penned by ‘Role Models’ screenwriter Tim Dowling, with 20th TV. With the deal in place, Tyler Labine has been cast in the lead role for ‘Guidance,’ which he’ll also produce. The sitcom brings Labine back to Fox after he lead the short-lived comedy series ‘Sons of Tucson’ in Spring 2010. Ryan Reynolds can add TV production to his resume. Variety reports that Reynolds' DarkFire banner has sold a script for a single-camera adult buddy comedy called Guidance. Tyler Labine is set to star and serve as executive producer on the show set in a high school. The studio snapped up the script before DarkFire could sell it to another network.
The show is written by Tim Dowling (Role Models), who will also serve as producer along with Jonathon Komack Martin, Steven Pearl and Allan Loeb, who started DarkFire with Reynolds earlier this year. They have a first-look deal at 20th TV.
Labine has starred in short-lived series Mad Love, Sons of Tucson and Reaper in recent years. I think he is really funny and hope that this show will find it's footing. What are your thougths on this news?...

Ryan Reynolds and Allan Loeb's recently launched TV company DarkFire has made its first sale, and it was a quick one. The comedy project Guidance, from feature writer Tim Dowling (Just Go With It, Role Models), was just taken out by 20th TV where DarkFire has a first-look deal. In their first stop at Fox, the network took the show off the market and the rest of the pitch meetings were canceled. Tyler Labine (Reaper, Mad Love) is attached to star in and produce Guidance, which is described as an adult buddy comedy set in high school. Reynolds has been very involved in the project, which has received a put pilot commitment from Fox, including attending pitch meetings. He is executive producing with the rest of the DarkFire principals, Loeb, Steven Pearl and Jonathon Komack Martin. Dowling has ties to both Loeb and Reynolds. News broke Tuesday (Aug. 9) that CBS and Sony are developing a remake of the 1960s sitcom "Bewitched." Our first thought was "Another remake?," and our second was "Hope it's better than the Nicole Kidman-Will Ferrell movie."
Then, as it tends to do, our minds wandered to casting the roles of suburban wife and witch Samantha (played by Elizabeth Montgomery in the 1964-72 series) and her mortal husband Darrin (played by Dick York for five seasons, then by Dick Sargent). We have several ideas for Samantha -- some conforming to the pretty-blonde archetype set by Montgomery, some not so much. And since the change from York to Sargent is such a part of the show's history, we've gone ahead and suggested a few pairs of Darrins as well.
Samantha, going with type: We immediately thought of Sarah Chalke, the former "Scrubs" and "Mad Love" star (we know she just...

Exclusive: Actress Sarah Chalke has signed a development/talent holding deal with 20th Century Fox Television. Under the pact, the studio will develop a half-hour comedy project for her targeted for fall 2012. 20th TV first got in business with Chalke when she recurred on the studio's CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother from 2008-09 and then cast her as a lead in Greg Malins' 2010 ABC pilot Freshmen. After the pilot didn't make the cut to series in May 2010, the studio wanted to sign Chalke in a deal right away, but she was cast in CBS' midseason comedy series Mad Love, so 20th TV brass were "determined to get her this year," studio's chairman Gary Newman said. "She is incredibly talented as a comic force -- she can do physical comedy and has great timing. There is almost a Lucy quality to her," he said, referring to comedy icon Lucille Ball.

Fresh off an acclaimed run on the festival circuit comes the horror comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, starring Alan Tudyk, Tyler Labine and Katrina Bowden. The film has a fairly clever premise, great word of mouth and three charismatic leading actors. I just wish the trailer was a little more — umm, what's the word — good.
Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine) are two gentle-hearted good ol' boys who buy that vacation home they've always dreamt of, which of course is a dilapidated cabin straight out of The Evil Dead. While enjoying their little slice of heaven, they cross paths with a group of boisterous college kids straight out of whatever horror movie contains a group of boisterous college kids — which is almost every horror movie, I suppose.
Anyway, misunderstandings occur, people die accidentally and, quicker than you can say "high concept," the college kids think Tucker and Dale are redneck psycho killers,...

Kentucky native Sarah Wright aka Sarah Mason recently appeared in rom-com Made of Honor and started a recurring role in the Mad Love comedy series that premiered as a mid-season replacement in February, but that’s not important right now. What I meant to say is that Relativity Media officially announced that thesps Justin Chon of The Twilight Saga and Skylar Astin from Hamlet 2 will be joined by Sarah Wright to the core trio in the comedy 21 and Over.
Furthermore, Miles Teller will follow Footloose remake with Hangover-esque comedy 21 and Over from The Hangover scribes Jon Lucas and Scott Moore who will helm the film. Teller was cast in the lead role, back in May.
The 21 and Over plot follows two youth friends drag their salt-of-the-earth-buddy out to celebrate his twenty-first birthday the night before a medical school interview. But when one cold beer unavoidably leads to another and another,...
