Though not reflected in the ratings, the Documentary Club is one thing the Oprah Winfrey Network is doing right. Serving Life, which premieres Thursday at 9/8c, makes the channel 3-for-3 in its presentation of feature-length cultural studies.
The riveting Serving Life focuses on four new volunteers in the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola's hospice program — all long-term inmates themselves. Because the average sentence at the maximum security prison is 93 years, inmates die there, some inevitably from terminal illness. To handle this, warden Burl Cain has instituted a hospice program, reasoning, "It's just immoral not to care about somebody dying and try to have compassion when they're going to wherever they're going"...

Television looks pretty sparse tonight but there's a few gems in there. The "So You Think You Can Dance" crowd gets to worship at the feet of Cat Deeley again, and "Ancient Aliens" returns for people who appreciate crazy in its most well reasoned and researched forms. Seriously, everything they say makes perfect sense if you accept the basic premise of the show which is that aliens are responsible for all the parts of human history we can't really explain. Obviously. Oh! And "Project Runway" returns with it's duel guiding stars of Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, who I really wish I could just hire for hilarious and wine soaked dinner parties. I'd start throwing dinner parties if that were an option. Here's your Thursday night TV:
8:00pm: "So You Think You Can Dance" on Fox
"Wipeout" on ABC
9:00pm: "Big Brother" on CBS
"Burn Notice" on USA...

Serving Life plays like the flip side of the brutal prison drama Oz. This narrowly focused yet affecting documentary, set in a hospice in the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, follows prisoners who volunteer to help other prisoners at the end of their lives. Narrated and executive produced by Forest Whitaker, it is the first doc to have its premiere on the Oprah Winfrey Network’s Doc Club. And true to the uplifting spirit of Own, the volunteers it follows are once-brutal criminals – murderers, armed robbers, most of them sentenced to life without parole – who regret their pasts and…...

Oprah tells people to read, watch or buy something, and they do it. Which is why we were thrilled when her Own network launched its Own Documentary Club.
We're the first to admit we watch a lot of TV, and admittedly, it's not always what we'd classify as "high quality." We could use some education and truthful storytelling in our TV schedules, and with the big O's stamp of approval, this program hand-picks worthy documentaries to watch.
Their third selection is 'Serving Life' (premieres Thurs., July 28, 9Pm Et on Own), the first Own original documentary, and we've got an exclusive video preview featuring Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker, who's also the doc's producer and narrator.
