With the announcement of the Tony Awards nominations on May 2, we now know the shows and performers in contention for the 76th annual ceremony. The 40 members of the Tony nominating committee recognized 27 of the 38 eligible productions across 26 competitive categories.
A new stage adaptation of the 1959 film “Some Like It Hot” leads all productions with 13 nominations. That tally includes a nomination for the top honor of Best Musical and four bids for its performers, Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, Kevin Del Aguila, and NaTasha Yvette Williams. Three other new musicals are tied for second place with nine nominations: “& Juliet,” “New York, New York,” and “Shucked,” all earning Best Musical bids. Japanese animation film “Suzume” made just shy of $50 million on its opening weekend in mainland Chinese theaters.
Data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, shows “Suzume” grabbing the top spot at the box office with $49.6 million (RMB342 million) between Friday and Sunday.
That is the biggest opening score by any film this year outside of the Chinese New Year holiday week in late January. The next best is “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” which opened with $19.4 million in mid-February.
Directed by Shinkai Makoto, “Suzume” was a hit in Japan where it was released late last year and has remained on screens for a $105 million total. It played in February at the Berlin Film Festival, where it came away largely empty-handed, but has subsequently performed strongly in the Asian territories where it has released.

Hollywood’s recent streak of shaky box office results in China continued over the weekend, as Warner Bros’ superhero sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Universal’s horror hit M3GAN both crashed and burned, losing to Chinese holdover releases.
Shazam! 2, directed by David F. Sandberg and starring Zachary Levi, opened to just $4.3 million, according to data from Artisan Gateway. The debut represents a 86 percent slide from the original Shazam!‘s $29.7 million opening in 2019. Ticketing app Maoyan currently projects Shazam 2 to finish with just $7.5 million, one of the lowest results of recent memory for a U.S. superhero tentpole.
Chinese comedy Post Truth, which opened March 10, easily won its second frame with a $18.8. million haul. The film is written by, directed by and stars Chengpeng Dong (Detective Chinatown 3). The movie follows a cemetery plot salesman who’s struggling to salvage his reputation after he’s been slandered by online lies.

Update, writethru: New Line/DC/Warner Bros’ Shazam! Fury of the Gods has had a less than heroic launch with $65.5M global, including $35M from the international box office. We always knew this sequel was going to come in lower than its predecessor, but the result is also far off where projections were ahead of the weekend.
Overall, the main issue on Shazam 2 appears to be a disconnect with hardcore DC fans, and, when it comes to China, an increasingly cold-shoulder approach of audiences to Hollywood fare. Fury of the Gods was simply a no-show in the Prc with a slight $4.4M weekend. Despite getting a day-and-date release there, moviegoers did not turn up for Shazam 2. This is part of a concerning trend in the world’s second biggest box office market where (outside of Avatar...

The two newcomers dominated the box office and relegated Hong Kong-produced courtroom drama “A Guilty Conscience” to a distant third place. “Guilty” took $2.3 million (RMB15.8 million) for a cumulative of $23 million since releasing on Feb. 24.
The remaining places in the top five continued to be occupied by films that released at Chinese New Year in January. “The Wandering Earth 2” took RMB15.7 million (nearly $2.3 million) for a cumulative of $598 million (RMB4.00 billion...
