This Spider-Man article contains spoilers.
Every comic book fan knows about the night that Gwen Stacy died. The two-part story from 1973’s Amazing Spider-Man #121–122 stands as a watershed moment in comics, not only upping the stakes of Spider-Man’s inability to balance his personal and heroic lives, but also giving permission for superhero comics to push the envelope in a way that had not been done since the pre-Comics Code days.
For most of Spider-Man’s history, Gwen fell into the same category as Thomas and Martha Wayne or (pre-Superboy punch) Jason Todd. She existed only to die, to give tragic backstory to our hero. Decades before Major Force killed Alex DeWitt in Green Lantern #54, Gwen was the patron saint of fridged girlfriends. Her death hangs over the entire story of Spider-Man, even when played by the sparkling Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man movies. The writers know we expect...

Drake Bell is healing alongside Rider Strong.
Strong, who became close friends with dialogue coach Brian Peck after meeting on “Boy Meets World,” was one of the many actors who wrote a letter in defense of Peck’s character when Bell accused him of sexual assault in 2003.
At the time, the victim of the assault was listed as John Doe, but Bell came forward revealing it was him in Investigation Discovery’s “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.”
Now, more than 20 years later, Bell and Strong have connected. “I just had the most amazing conversation with @RiderStrong we are all healing together. I have nothing but love and forgiveness for him,” Bell posted on X on Friday.
The tweet comes less than a month after the “Drake & Josh” star called out Strong via social media. “Rider Was 24 years old when he wrote the letter and was...

Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man has become one of the most iconic versions of the character. Embodying the very essence of the character, including his charm, his wittiness, and his ability to joke in the more inappropriate of times, the love that the actor gets for this character is well deserved.
Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man
Although these opinions are held by the majority, when the film was originally coming out, a lot of people had a lot of things to say. This is not surprising as the films had to follow up the ridiculously high standards set by Tobey Maguire’s films. Such a strong love for the Sam Raimi films made many publicly voice their opinions on the casting of the web-slinger.

In addition to his iconic role in the space saga Star Wars, Hollywood star Mark Hamill is renowned for his prolific voice-acting career. Over the decades, he’s voiced multiple characters across various shows and movies, most notably being the DC villain Joker in Batman: The Animated Series.
Hamill further delved into DC territory with his portrayal of Trickster in the live-action series The Flash. And his talent transcended beyond DC, as he also took on the roles of two underrated Marvel villains in the animated Spider-Man shows.

There are too many Marvel Comics out there to read them all — and I'm talking about both the current ongoing series, and the 85 years of accumulated material. The publisher is aware of this, so what's its solution to hook new readers?
In 2000, Marvel launched "Ultimate Marvel," a new series of comics set in a separate continuity from the original "Earth-616" comics. The Ultimate Marvel comics followed the classic heroes, from Spider-Man to the Avengers (renamed the Ultimates), getting their powers in a more contemporary-styled setting. These were comics written not to appeal to long-time, continuity-obsessed fans, but to hook the new generation of nerds obsessing over "Buffy" and "The X-Files." That reverberated back and Ultimate Marvel became the primary influence on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After highs and lows, Ultimate Marvel ended in 2015. In 2024, it returned ... sort of. Rather than a continuation of the old Ultimate Universe, Marvel has just...

One of our favorite fellows competing on “The Masked Singer” season 11 is disguised as the Gumball. He wowed the crowd in his first appearance on March 13 with a medley of “If I Only Had a Heart” by Jack Haley and “Heartbeat Song” by Kelly Clarkson. It became clear quite quickly that this contender is someone who has made his living by raising his voice in song.

Twenty five years ago, Marvel Comics was in a difficult spot. They were crawling out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They were coming out of one of the lowest creative points in the company’s history, and the early ‘90s comics boom had gone completely bust with very little sign of recovering. It wasn’t a good time to make superhero movies either, especially after the commercial ridicule thrown at Batman & Robin. So to try and fix things, Marvel tried something old again.
With the goal of getting back to “the world outside your window” that made the company a cultural juggernaut, Marvel stripped out 30 years of accumulated continuity and started fresh with brand new updates of their most popular characters. Not many people have seen "Madame Web" and an even smaller slice of the moviegoing population like the movie.
It stuck out to me that star Dakota Johnson seems to be under the impression that the film was set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I don't know if this is Sony Pictures feeding the actors and/or their agents misleading information or if movie stars like Johnson (understandably) can't be bothered to learn the nerdy logistics of these franchises.
Still, this got me thinking how the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn't have a "no previous superhero roles" bar to entry. Oscar Isaac, who played the villain in the disastrous "X-Men: Apocalypse," was then recruited to star in "Moon Knight." Christian Bale, a generation's Dark Knight, played Gorr the God Butcher in "Thor: Love and Thunder" because of his children's pleading.
In "Madame Web," Sydney Sweeney plays Julia Cornwall, the future Spider-Woman.

“With great power comes great responsibility” might be the most important line in superhero fiction. It crystalizes a theme present in the best superhero stories even before Spider-Man‘s debut in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman tales and Bill Parker, and C.C. Beck’s Captain Marvel adventures. The line transforms superhero stories from mere power fantasies to stories about service and care, about empowering others instead of consolidating power for yourself.
So when a member of Las Arañas, Madame Web‘s ill-advised magical natives, tells Cass Webb (Dakota Johnson), “When you take on the responsibility, great power will come,” it’s clear the production team has lost the plot.
Director S.J. Clarkson, who co-wrote the script with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker, and certainly a boardroom of IP lawyers, intends the line to break Cass out of her...

As movies and TV shows have become the dominant mode of superhero storytelling, some comic writers have crossed mediums with the characters they pen. Allan Heinberg wrote a brief run on "Wonder Woman" and years later wrote the screenplay for the 2017 "Wonder Woman" movie. Brian Michael Bendis, the defining Marvel Comics writer of the 2000s, sat on Marvel Studios' now-disbanded "creative committee." James Gunn, as the co-head of DC Studios, has brought writer Tom King into the fold.
"Deadpool & Wolverine," which brings the 20th Century Fox side of Marvel into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the latest example of this; one of the movie's five credited co-writers is Zeb Wells, who also wrote an episode of "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law." For some Marvel Comic fans, however, his name lives in infamy.
Now, Wells' "X-Men" related work is well-regarded. The 18-issue series "Hellions" was like a mutant version of "Suicide Squad...

We all know the story of Peter Parker, right? After the death/disappearance of his parents, Peter was raised by his kindly Aunt May and Uncle Ben, who gave him a happy life, despite the constant bullying he endured at school. After a bite from a radioactive spider gave him superpowers, Peter made one selfish choice that cost the life of his Uncle. As a result, Peter has spent the rest of his life as Spider-Man, living up to Uncle Ben’s teaching that with great power comes great responsibility.
At least, that’s how it is in most universes, including the original Ultimate Universe from the comics. But with a revamped Ultimate Universe returning to Marvel Comics, courtesy of writer Jonathan Hickman, Peter has undergone a significant change.

It's not certain when there'll next be a new Spider-Man movie in theaters. 2023 gave us one of the best ones yet with "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse," but the sequel "Beyond The Spider-Verse" doesn't have a concrete release date. Tom Holland's live-action web-slinger is probably returning, but his fourth outing is currently in pre-production.
Fortunately, there are decades of great comics if you need your Spider-Man fix. Some of the best of this past decade, all written by Chip Zdarsky (a pen name for Steve Murray), are now collected all in a single omnibus edition. If you're a Spider-Man movie fan, you'd be remiss not to swing over to a comic shop or bookstore and seek this out.

Steve Lightfoot, known for his work on Apple’s Shantaram and Netflix’s The Punisher, has signed on as co-showrunner on Amazon’s live-action Spider-Man Noir series based on the Marvel comic, Deadline has confirmed.
As we reported in February, the as-yet untitled series is written and executive produced by Oren Uziel (The Lost City). It follows an older, grizzled superhero in 1930s New York City. A source close to the project told Deadline the show is set in its own universe that involves an alternate Spider-Man character who is not Peter Parker.
Lightfoot will serve as co-showrunner and executive producer with Uziel.
Uziel developed the series with Academy Award winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal who will serve as executive producers. Sony Pictures Television, where Lord and Miller are under an overall deal, is the studio.

Take a look at the comic book trailer supporting Marvel Comics' new title "Ultimate Spider-Man" #1, available January 10, 2024, written by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Marco Checchetto, with numerous variant covers:

Back in February, Steven Yeun was announced to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a "key role" in "Thunderbolts." Now, thanks to Robert Kirkman, it's been confirmed what Yeun's role is: Robert Reynolds/The Sentry.
The Sentry is a relatively recent creation, debuting in 2000 and created by Paul Jenkins, Jae Lee, and Rick Veitch. He's one of the countless Superman clones across comics; he has the same powerset, the flowing cape and S-insignia, he gets his powers from the sun, and he even boasts the classic alliterative secret identity (think "Clark Kent").
However, Mr. Reynolds is not all good. Afflicted with a personality disorder since he got his powers, his archenemy -- the soul-devouring shadow "The Void" -- is Reynold's own alternate personality. Now that Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) is the Hulk full-time and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) was seemingly crushed beneath Mount Wundagore, the Sentry easily slots...

It’s been a long wait for Invincible season 2. Ever since father-son duo Nolan and Mark Grayson signed off in a symphony of bloody violence in early 2021, fans have been clamoring for more superheroic action. Now the time has finally come as Invincible season 2 is set to premiere its first episode on Nov. 3 on Prime Video.
While Invincible and Omni-Man naturally take up a lot of the attention for this very good Amazon series, let’s not forget the rest of the expansive cast of characters that make up the world created by comic writer and show producer Robert Kirkman. Like any good superhero saga worth its salt, Invincible has a very deep bench of compelling heroes, villains, aliens, civilians, and more.
The bench is so deep, in fact, that it can be hard to keep track of everyone. With that in mind, here is a helpful refresher on...

Even as superhero movies took Hollywood and the box office by storm in the 2010s, it has proven difficult for fans of those movies to get into the source material comics. If you're a Spider-Man fan eagerly waiting for "Beyond The Spider-Verse," though, pay attention to a new comic swinging its way to stores in January 2024. It will be the easiest jumping-on point for you in a long while.
That comic is "Ultimate Spider-Man," first announced via Marvel's Twitter account on September 20, 2023. It will be an ongoing series written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Marco Checchetto. The talent involved was already enough to pique comic fans' interest (and we'll explain why it should rouse yours' too soon). More details about "Ultimate Spider-Man were confirmed at New York Comic-Con this past weekend — at a panel attended by comics outlet Aipt, Hickman said the comic will be about a middle-aged Spider-Man,...

"What if [X] had emotions?" It's a template Pixar used to massive success with "Toy Story" and has returned to time and time again ever since. It was probably inevitable then that the studio would make a film with the premise, "What if emotions had emotions?" The result was 2015's "Inside Out," and you know what? It's pretty damn great, too.
Pixar's animated hit examines the inner workings of the mind of Riley, an 11-year-old hockey-loving girl whose world is completely upended after her family moves across the U.S. from Minnesota to San Francisco. However, we as viewers get to experience this not just through Riley's eyes but through those of the personified emotions guiding her brain. For a film with such a heady setup, "Inside Out" is as crowd-pleasing as they come, combining rib-cracking laughs and tear-jerking drama with dazzlingly colorful visuals of Riley's inner landscape (like personality traits...

The last time comics author Brian Michael Bendis worked with his longtime collaborator, artist Alex Maleev, the result was Scarlet, a two-volume series that was dark and dystopian, telling the tale of a corrupt police state and a new American civil war. The second volume hit in 2016, as the Donald Trump presidency began, seemingly presaging the darker moments of the last several years.
“I promised Alex the next one will be fun,” Bendis recalls.
Now, the writer, who is perhaps most associated with his best known creation, Spider-Man Miles Morales, is back with that “fun one,” a six-issue miniseries from Dark Horse Comics titled Masterpiece that reunites him with Maleev for the first time since 2016. The story takes Bendis back to his crime story roots while offering a bevy of original colorful characters with the writer’s patented snappy dialogue.

Sony is expanding the scope of its corner of the Marvel universe with another "Spider-Man" spin-off movie next year in the form of "Madame Web." While Dakota Johnson will be playing the titular character in director S.J. Clarkson's film, much has been made of "Euphoria" star Sydney Sweeney's casting and who she might be playing. Now, we know for sure, and it very much sounds like she could have a future as a major Marvel superhero.
In a recent profile of Sweeney by Variety, it was confirmed that the actress will be playing none other than Julia Carpenter. In the pages of Marvel Comics, this is one of the personas who eventually becomes Spider-Woman. However, it was not explicitly stated that she would be playing Spider-Woman in this film, though one assumes that would be the way to go. Sweeney, commenting on it, explained that she was very excited.

Prime Video plans a Nov. 3 rollout for the second season of superhero saga Invincible, sharing a teaser trailer today at San Diego Comic-Con.
In addition to the second season, Prime announced Invincible Atom Eve, a standalone episode centered on the titular character, which will premiere July 21 on Prime Video.
Season 1 premiered in March 2021. In April 2021, the series was renewed for Seasons 2 and 3.
From The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and based on the Skybound/Image comic of the same name by Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, Invincible is an hour-long, adult animated superhero show that revolves around seventeen-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who’s just like every other guy his age — except that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of the year. The film, which hit theaters on June 2, grossed $120.5 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, putting it just behind "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which debuted with $146 million. Besides its animation, story, and representation, "Across the Spider-Verse" will be remembered for pushing the boundaries of the multiverse in Marvel films.
While "Spider-Man: No Way Home" brought three iconic live-action versions of the web-slinging superhero together, "Across the Spider-Verse" reportedly included over 250 versions of the beloved character - this time, both in animated and live-action form. Seeing so many Spider-People in one movie was definitely exciting, but perhaps the biggest crowd-cheering moment of all was when Donald Glover's version of the Prowler came on screen. Here's why.
What Is Donald Glover's Connection to the "Spider-Man" Franchise?
Glover actually has a long history with "Spider-Man.

This post contains light spoilers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Among the many pleasures of the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was its celebration of all things Spider-Man. The 2018 film filled the screen with webheads, letting audiences delight in all of the variations of people and creatures who can do anything a spider can. Into the Spider-Verse made fast fans of Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy aka Ghost Spider and Nicolas Cage‘s tough-talking Spider-Man Noir. Across the Spider-Verse continues this tradition with Oscar Isaac as conflicted antagonist Spider-Man 2099, but the real breakout is the movie’s loudest, rudest character: Spider-Punk.
Voiced by Daniel Kaluuya (in an accent closer to his native English), Spider-Punk is Hobie Brown, the Spider-Man of Earth-138. Draped in the trash aesthetic of 70s UK punk, Hobie battles against oppression with a commitment to anarchy and disruption. Spider-Verse directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers,...

Welcome to Sales to Astonish, a new column in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us news on comic sales and the general moves in the comic market over the past month or so!
One of the valuable lessons I have learned in three years of comic retailing is that you can’t just sell titles that you like. The joy of the medium for the last couple of decades has been the variety of titles available and keeping a wide range of genres on offer has always been important. However, even if I only sold superhero comics I couldn’t possibly read, like and sell every one. The case in point here is titles which I never read such as Superman, Ultimate Spider-man and What If always sell when I have them in stock and the first launch or May saw all...

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse took the franchise to a whole new level with notable Marvel Comics characters such as Spider-Punk / Hobart “Hobie” Brown making their movie debut. Nonetheless, this is not the first screen appearance of the character. Comic book enthusiasts were introduced to Spider-Punk in January 2015 with the release of Dan Slott’s The Amazing Spider-Man #10. The character made its first screen appearance in a cameo in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated television series episode “Return to the Spider-Verse: Part 4.” In Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Punk (voiced by Drake Bell) is one of the many alternate-reality Spider-Men under the...

This post contains spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
Spider-Man has almost as long a history in animation as he does in the comic pages where he originated. That's why the "Spider-Verse" films' conceit — placing different Spider-People together and representing them with different styles of animation — is so clever. While the original "Into the Spider-Verse" featured only six Spider-People teaming up, the sequel "Across the Spider-Verse" takes things into overdrive with hundreds of them. This fulfills the promise of a Spider-Verse.
Most of these Spider-People are simple cameos or easter eggs -- they're all going about their day in Miguel O'Hara's (Oscar Isaac) citadel on Earth-928 and the film rarely lingers on them. However, knowledgeable Spider-Fans will spot some stars among the crowd. "Across the Spider-Verse" treats all Spider-Man audiovisual media as part of one big web. Spider-Man isn’t exactly the first character that comes to mind when one thinks of comic-book horror, but the iconic wall-crawler has actually dealt with his fair share of terror since his debut back in 1962. From his tragic part in the Marvel Zombies crossover to being forced to battle against monstrous villains like Carnage and The Lizard, there’s no shortage of horror-inspired stories starring our favorite web-head.
That’s why it makes sense that one of the most famous Spider-Man yarns centers around an extraterrestrial parasite that feeds off of aggression, with the aptly named “Alien Costume Saga” touching on elements of body horror and introducing a new monstrous antagonist in the form of Venom (who would later be rebranded as an anti-hero due to the character’s overwhelming popularity). 35 years later, this story is still influencing Spider-Man adaptations, with the most recent example being Insomniac’s upcoming Spider-Man 2,...

Actor Drake Bell, best known for co-starring in Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh, has been found safe after being declared “missing and endangered” by the Daytona Beach Police Department.
As per the Dbpd’s post on Facebook just this morning, “Officers are looking for Jared Bell”, referring to Bell’s real name (his middle name is Drake). They also wrote that Drake Bell’s last known whereabouts before going missing were potentially near a high school just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Officials said that he is likely traveling in a BMW. The situation has garnered such media attention that the department had to assure followers the story was real, confirming, “For those asking, this is a legitimate post from the Daytona Beach Police Department.” As of publication, the initial post had more than 1,000 comments.
The police department’s specific noting of the high school location may sound alarms to some.

Even before the days of Marvel's Cinematic Universe or its equivalent in DC, the relationship between film, television, and comics was a pretty symbiotic one. Just as film and TV are now majorly informed by comics, comic artists have taken inspiration from film and TV — especially when it comes to the design for certain characters. Sometimes, though, the inspiration is equal parts thematic as it is aesthetic. On occasion, an episode of television can even inspire a shift in a narrative arc, a fresh conflict, or even a brand new character. Such was the case for Brian Michael Bendis,...

Spider-Man Noir is making the jump to live action, according to Variety. The 1930s detective movie-style hero, who fans have seen played by Nicolas Cage in "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and by Milo Ventimiglia in "Ultimate Spider-Man," is reportedly set to get his own TV series courtesy of Amazon Prime Video.
While casting information isn't yet known, the untitled Spider-Man Noir series counts "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" writer-producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller among the members of its producing team, along with former Sony Chairperson Amy Pascal (who executive produces) and "22 Jump Street" writer Oren Uziel. Lord and Miller's 2018 film saw Cage play an older, black-and-white private investigator version of Peter Parker with a hilarious level of angst. The character's favored pastimes included drinking egg creams, beating up Nazis, and letting matches burn down to his fingertips "just to feel something."
