Although 2024 marks another year where I won’t make it to SXSW in person, I’m lucky enough to have access to the majority of short films screening at the festival, and so have binge-watched my way through them over the last week. Animation undoubtedly reigns supreme this year, with half of my 10 favourites being animated pieces, but as always at SXSW, there’s a diverse programme of films, from moving docs to Wtf classics.
Here are the 10 titles that caught my attention in the 2024 line-up:
A Crab in the Pool – Alexandra Myotte & Jean-Sébastien Hamel
A truly surprising short, A Crab in the Pool initially sucks you in with its strange introduction to the world of two siblings left to fend for themselves on a hot summer’s day, before leaving you reeling from the gut-punch impact of its narrative. Reminiscent of a contemporary Mike Judge animation, but with a surreal twist,...

Ten years ago this summer, Kelsey Waldon was named one of Rolling Stone Country’s inaugural Artists You Need to Know. She’s been on a roll ever since, releasing acclaimed albums like 2022’s No Regular Dog, and signing with John Prine’s Oh Boy! Records. On May 10, Waldon will release her latest project, There’s Always a Song, a duet album that finds the Kentucky native interpreting the country and bluegrass songs she listened to while growing up.

Simu Liu landed a huge starring role in Marvel‘s “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings.” And that part came with all the leading man trappings, like hosting “SNL” and touring the late-night circuit. But what’s Liu done since then? Well, he has a part as a Ken in Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” on the way this summer, and stars opposite Sam Worthington in the upcoming thriller “Hello Stranger“; but beyond that, not much.

Exclusive: Yellowstone and Fifty Shades franchise actor Luke Grimes has signed on to star in the sci-fi-thriller Hello Stranger, with April Mullen (Wander) slated to direct from a screenplay penned by Ryan Christopher Churchill.
In Hello Stranger, a woman attempts to replace her newly deceased husband, Evan (Grimes), with an android simulant. Although Sim Evan appears like human Evan in every way, Faye does not feel the same love for Sim Evan as it does for her. Sim Evan tries to win Faye back, while at the same time, he is on the run from a government agent chasing down SIMs who have become “conscious” and could be a threat to humankind. Casting on the other key roles is underway.
The film marks Mullen’s follow-up to feature Wander, starring Aaron Eckhart, Katheryn Winnick and Tommy Lee Jones, which was released by Saban, and her Toronto Film Festival feature Below Her Mouth,...

The James Hunter Six’s “Who’s Fooling Who” feels beamed in from a jukebox circa 1967, when the world was overflowing with simple, devastatingly effective, sub-three-minute soul singles mapping the treacherous terrain of romance: The Sapphires’ “Who Do You Love” and Evie Sands’ “I Can’t Let Go,” Barbara Lewis’ “Hello Stranger” and Brenton Wood’s “Trouble.”
‘Who’s Fooling Who” is suitably spare, mostly a gentle lick on acoustic guitar, maybe a cousin of a bolero or a bossa nova, and a soft tumble of percussion. Hunter’s voice is wonderfully craggy,...

The executive producers of Lost in Space tell us where a potential season 3 may take the Robinson family.
Lost in Space Season 3 has yet to be officially confirmed by Netflix, but the executive producers may have learned something from spending so much time with the always prepared Maureen Robinson. The creative minds behind the show already have a roadmap for the third season planned out.
*Caution: Season 2 spoilers ahead*
“A big thing happened at the end of season 2: the kids and parents are split apart,” showrunner Zack Estrin tells Den of Geek. “We’re going to pick up with two separate stories in season 3.”
The cliffhanger ending of Lost in Space season 2 leaves several storylines up in the air. So far, the Robinsons haven’t met a problem they couldn’t solve together. Now, apart, a potential third season may be their most daunting challenge yet.
