Former Parker Spitzer cohost Kathleen Parker spoke to Morning Joe about the news that her old sparring partner Eliot Spitzer would be running for New York comptroller, his first foray into politics since a prostitution scandal forced his resignation from the office of governor. Parker intimated that his biggest challenge would not be overcoming his salacious past, but the enemies he made with his aggressive investigations of the financial sector.

Eliot Spitzer introduced Viewpoint, Current TV ‘s unexpected new program, just hours after the network announced its firing of Keith Olbermann. The former New York Governor made no mention of Olbermann during the opening segment of Viewpoint, which took the 8 p.m. Et timeslot vacated by Olbermann’s Countdown. Instead, Spitzer quoted John Adams on the nature of facts, "those stubborn little things," the host said his program would doggedly pursue to inform its audience. Eliot Spitzer's second try at cable news success started unexpectedly on Friday with the debut of his new show "Viewpoint" on Current.
Just hours after Current announced that it had fired "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann, "Viewpoint," began in Olbermann's old slot. It was a sudden return to a hosting role for Spitzer, who had an unhappy and brief stint on CNN from late 2010 to the summer of 2011 as the host of "Parker Spitzer," later called "In the Arena." This time, he reemerged with not even a day's notice -- let alone any kind of promotional campaign or press tour to get the word out.
However, Spitzer has apparently had some time to prepare, as some reports suggested that he has been in talks with Current to replace Olbermann since November.
If his rather bumpy route to his new job was weighing on his mind, Spitzer didn't mention it as he opened the show.

CNN has revealed that it has canceled former New York governor Eliot Spitzer's talkshow. Spitzer is generally known for his infamous involvement in a high-priced prostitution ring, which forced him to resign his post as New York governor in 2008. Following his resignation, the 52-year-old was invited to join CNN as a host for the series Parker Spitzer with journalist Kathleen Parker. Parker left the series in February of this year due to its poor ratings. The show was ultimately renamed In the Arena, featuring Spitzer as the main contributor. Today, CNN announced that it would be canceling Spitzer's series to replace it with Anderson Cooper's news program AC360. However, the network is reportedly looking (more)...

After just nine months on air, CNN is ousting primetime pundit (and disgraced former New York governor) Eliot Spitzer and his show In the Arena. The struggling show was previously revamped with the exit of co-host Kathleen Parker this past February.
As of Aug. 8, the network is going to move up several shows, including Anderson Cooper 360, The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, and John King, USA. In September, former CNBC reporter Erin Burnett will fill the 7 p.m. slot that King formerly filled.
Cooper, whose show will rebroadcast in his usual 10 p.m., is not alone in receiving good news.

Sad news today for a very small group of people: on August 8, CNN will withdraw Eliot Spitzer’s misbegotten prime-time roundtable, In the Arena (neée Parker Spitzer), from the airwaves. It will be replaced in time slot, though not in spirit, by Anderson Cooper 360. According to Politico, though fewer than 100,000 young people (aged 25-54) dared venture into the Arena/mindlessly left the show on mute in the background while eating dinner each night, CNN is still hoping to find some use for Spitzer. “We are in discussions with Eliot Spitzer about an alternative role,” a internal company memo revealed. Back in February, in a different internal memo, CNN announced that deposed co-host Kathleen Parker had left Spitzer’s side to “focus on her writing.” However, Spitzer famously hates column writing, so this would not be a suitable “alternative role.” In the Arena’s Wikipedia page has already been edited to the past tense.

It's not as bad as having to resign in disgrace as New York's governor after a sex scandal. But Eliot Spitzer still has to look for a new gig now that CNN says his low-rated weeknight talk show In The Arena didn't make the network's new line-up that will debut Aug. 8. He'll be replaced at 8:00 Pm Et by Anderson Cooper's AC360, which will re-air at 10:00. That show will be preceded at 7:00 by an unnamed general news show hosted by former CNBC anchor Erin Burnett. And Piers Morgan Tonight will remain at 9:00. Ken Jautz, Evp of CNN/U.S. says that the network is "in discussions with Eliot Spitzer about an alternative role. We thank him and the entire In the Arena team for creating a program that moved many political and economic issues into the national spotlight.” Spitzer adds in a statement that his show...

CNN has canceled Eliot Spitzer's nightly news show 'In the Arena,' a move that the network announced today in conjunction with additional re-shuffling of their nightly lineup. Spitzer, the former New York governor who resigned in disgrace after being caught in a prostitution scandal, used the show as a vehicle for a mainstream comeback, but it never took hold with viewers and consistently struggled for ratings. CNN had tried to re-tool the program, originally launched as 'Parker Spitzer' in the summer of 2010, but the numbers never picked up, and the network decided to cut their losses and move on.
Spitzer reflected on his brief run at CNN in a statement: "We engaged serious people in conversations about national and global issues in a way that was informative and challenging. I believe that we provided diverse and valuable perspectives during the show's tenure.

Yesterday, we completely forgot to recognize the third anniversary of the Eliot Spitzer prostitution-ring story. Before he was the host of CNN’s short-lived Parker Spitzer, Eliot Spitzer was a deposed politician with a reliably well-written Slate column, and before that, Spitzer was a New York governor whose sexual appetite caught the attention of the F.B.I. On March 10, 2008, The New York Times broke the news that federal wiretaps linked Spitzer to a prostitution ring, which, at the time, had the world’s worst Web site. (NewtExplore2012.com would not arrive until another three years, and even then, it wouldn’t have really “arrived.”) Two days later, on March 12, Spitzer resigned—an anniversary we’re actually early for, so. Public opinion about Spitzer has since softened, paving the way for squeamish joking and uneasy reminders about Spitzer’s s salacious past. Let’s review some of the most uncomfortable examples now.

Cable news ratings, March 2, 2011: •The decision to transform CNN's Parker Spitzer into a new show, In the Arena, more focused around host Eliot Spitzer came after many observed a strange trend: Parker Spitzer had far better ratings when co-host Kathleen Parker wasn't on. In its debut week, that trend hasn't quite held for In the Arena. The new show, which began Monday, has only had three nights on the air and making any conclusions this early would be unfair, but the show has lost viewers each night, from 124,000 viewers 25-54 on Monday to 114,000 Wednesday, for a fourth-place finish behind Hln's Nancy Grace.

Eliot Spitzer is already moving on, with his new show up and running. But even off the air, Parker Spitzer ended much as it began-with Spitzer insisting on the last word.
Time moves quickly in the 24-hour culture of cable news. Just 72 hours after Kathleen Parker was kicked to the curb as co-host of CNN's Parker Spitzer, her partner Eliot Spitzer was back on the air Monday evening as host of the brand-new In the Arena. Behind the scenes on Friday, the pair's final act played out with characteristic discord.

Amidst reports that CNN is eager to shake-up the relatively new, but ratings-starved, Parker Spitzer, by dumping Kathleen Parker and giving Eliot Spitzer a new co-host, I politely suggest the exact opposite strategy would better ensure the show's longevity. With the ratings for Parker Spitzer consistently placing it in last place among cable news networks at its time slot, and often last among CNN's own primetime lineup, the evidence is clear that the show's current format is not clicking with audiences. Change is a good idea. Keeping Spitzer is not.

Middling cable network CNN may dispose of one half of the Parker Spitzer team. Guess which half? “CNN is considering replacing Kathleen Parker,” according to today’s Wall Street Journal. Rumors of a Parker departure have been swirling since as early as December 1, when the New York Post reported that the conservative columnist simply did not care for Eliot Spitzer. At the time, we suggested some possible Parker replacements, including Christine O’Donnell, George W. Bush, and Julian Assange. As those options are under police investigation, presumably unwilling, and under police investigation, respectively, other speculators are now recommending a new roster of potential backups.
