Last summer, Phoebe Bridgers had an idea for a song.
“I wanted to talk about how stupid music is,” says Bridgers, 24. “I wanted to talk about how awesome music is, and how depressing it is, and why we all make music if it doesn’t last forever.”
She had been tossing around possible lyrics and melody lines with singer-songwriter Christian Lee Hutson when another friend and collaborator, Conor Oberst, wandered into the room out of nowhere. Oberst, who had taken mushrooms and was in the middle of a trip, began talking out loud: “Chesapeake,...

Extremity is an upcoming horror film. From the disturbed minds of writers David Bond (Boogeyman: Reincarnation) and Scott Swan, the film was directed by Anthony Diblasi. In the film, a young woman goes on a psychological journey, in order to relieve herself of an earlier drama. Extremity will be released by Dread Central Presents, in early October. A trailer for Extremity was released this past month (found below). Now, the film's special features and other release details are available. Extremity features a well renowned cast. Sports Illustrated model Ashley Smith stars as Nell, one of the many masked villains. Long-time horror veteran J. Larose (Insidious) also stars, along with Ami Tomite (Meatball Machine) and Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police). This cast bring great performances to an uber-violent feature as seen in the film's official trailer. The release date for Extremity is scheduled for October 2nd. On this date, this indie horror feature will show.

The clip reveals more of the film's story. From the trailer and the synopsis, archaeologists are unearthing the history of a rehabilitation institution. Then, the archaeologists' daughter begins to sleepwalk. But, things take an even darker turn, the deeper they dig. An official release date has not been announced. However, Exhume is being repped by Tombstone Distribution, so a launch date will be coming soon. For now, fans can find all of the details on this dark and disturbing horror film below. Set to debut on DVD and VOD on Monday 18th January, courtesy of Solo Media and Matchbox Films, Last Shift is the latest slice of horror from director Anthony Diblasi (Most Likely to Die, Cassadaga, Dread), and stars The Walking Dead‘s Juliana Harkavy, alongside Joshua Mikel, J. La Rose, Natalie Victoria and Sarah Sculco. And we have the new UK trailer for the film – check it out below, along with the UK artwork.
Rookie police officer Jessica Loren (Juliana Harkavy – The Walking Dead) has been assigned the last shift at a transitioning police station and must wait for a hazmat crew coming to pick up biomedical evidence. Ordered not to leave the station under any circumstance, Jessica comes to learn that it’s more than just an outdated station, its home to the ultimate embodiment of evil and his devoted blood thirsty followers. Borrowing its setting from John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 -- a lonely police station about to be closed down -- Anthony Diblasi's Last Shift then gives it a supernatural shove. A few years ago, Diblasi made Cassadaga, a slow-burning psychological drama featuring a strong female lead. It had its problems, but I liked Diblasi's directorial instincts, and the new trailer for Last Shift appears to set up a movie with a similar tone and feel. The official synopsis provides context: Rookie police officer Jessica Loren (Juliana Harkavy, The Walking Dead) has been assigned the last shift at a closing police station and must wait for a hazmat crew to collect biomedical evidence. Ordered not to leave the station under any circumstance, Jessica comes to learn that...

The first trailer for Last Shift has been release. The clip shows a rookie cop, in an abandoned police station. The film was developed by director Anthony Diblasi. Diblasi has had a film, Dread, entered as part of the After Dark Films "8 Films to Die For," in 2009. He also developed Cassadaga; this was an excellent film from 2011 and a review is posted here. However, the trailer for Last Shift appears slightly underwhelming. The clip and film relies on visions from the past. With elements of the Manson Family and Assault on Precinct 13, horror fans can come with their own opinion on the film, here. The film's story begins with Jessica (Juliana Harkavy). She is on her first shift in an old police station. A spooky nightmare begins as a supernatural cult leader makes his presence known and he has a special place in his deranged community for Jessica. As well,...

I thought that writer/director Anthony Diblasi had given up on the horror genre after he chose to helm Wuthering High School – a teen movie, more accurately a TV movie, take on the classic novel – and to be fair I thought it wouldn’t be much of a loss. You see, beyond his first film Dread, which was based on the short story of the same name by Clive Barker, I have pretty much disliked every movie he has made, including his two of his previous Frightfest-screened movies, Cassadaga and Missionary. However… and here’s where I eat my words (and my razor-edged hat if needs be) he hits it out of the park with Most Likely to Die.

I’m swamped with life, and movies/TV that I Have to watch, so my recreational October horror movie consumption is taking a hit. Slow week, for me. Oh, well, soon Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horror-Thon will be upon us, and I will be inside of a theater with movies on-film playing continuously for 24 straight hours. That should even me out. We have a mixed bag this week, including the new episode of The Walking Dead, which I am told is being counted.
The Walking Dead – Season 5, episode 1 “No Sanctuary” Sunday, October 12th – 66 minutes – 2 pts
Love it or hate it, The Walking Dead is here to stay. I’m one of the ones that love it, and this episode was one of the best of the entire series. Tons of action, and formerly-weak characters being total badasses. They didn’t meander, or spend an entire season setting up how the group would escape Terminus.

Somewhere deep inside Cassadaga, there's probably a moody thriller trying to claw its way out; if there is, it's well past the point where a woman is dismembered and then reassembled to look like a marionette puppet. Certainly, there are horror-thrillers that have managed to retain their menace despite their sheer implausibility, but one would be hard-pressed to think of a genuinely frightening film with imagery as ridiculous as this. The story of Lily (Kelen Coleman) might have been compelling enough on its own, but there's no way to retrieve it from the surroundings that it's been placed in.

Anthony DeBlasi's new film Cassadaga (review) is available now on DVD, and in case you need some added incentive to see it, how about digging on a brand new making-of featurette that goes behind the scenes?
The film stars Kevin Alejandro, Kelen Coleman, Louise Fletcher, Rus Blackwell, Hank Stone, J Larose, and Amy LoCicero.
Synopsis
Cassadaga tells the story of Lily Morel (Kelen Coleman), a post-lingually deaf artist, who participates in a séance in the spiritualist community of Cassadaga. But instead of getting closure with her recently departed sister, Lily contacts the vengeful ghost of a murdered woman. As the ghost becomes increasingly angry and violent, Lily rushes to unravel the mysterious circumstances surrounding the woman’s death – a task that will bring her face-to-face with a sadistic serial killer who turns his victims into human marionette dolls.

Earlier this week, 'Cassadaga,' the new feature film from director Anthony Diblasi was released on DVD just under the radar. However, it's a new horror film that absolutely should be on your radar. Why? Not only did I name it one of my Top 10 horror films of 2013, but it's a truly unique genre film that combines a tradition ghost story with a serial killer named "Geppetto," who literally pulls his victims apart limb from limb just to put them back together as a human marionette. It stars Kelen Coleman, 'True Blood's Kevin Alejandro & if you're playing close attention, you'll also spot genre vet J. Larose ('Insidious,' 'Saw III') in there too. There's a lot of weird & wild stuff in the flick, so you need to find it and check it out Asap. (It's also available on VOD right now.)
Here's a fun treat.

More of a mystery drama than any kind of suspense or horror piece, Cassadaga is an ideal movie to watch at home. It should be clear by now to those who pay attention to independent horror cinema that Anthony Diblasi likes to jump across different sub-genres. As the director of Dread and a producer on The Midnight Meat Train, the guy has helped to bring two very solid Clive Barker adaptations to life, and while Mr. Diblasi's upcoming thriller Missionary is a decent but conventional romantic thriller, his new-to-dvd horror mash-up Cassadaga is certainly colorful enough to warrant some exploration. Sort of an old-fashioned mystery premise with a nastily effective slasher flick subplot and a plot construction that feels like it fell directly out of a 1987 giallo film, Cassadaga is about a young deaf woman who travels to an isolated art college after losing her little sister in a freak accident. Despite the kindness of her sweet and pot-lovin' landlady Claire (Louise Fletcher), poor Lily (Kelen Coleman) is, of course, pretty miserable...

Yup, I don’t think I’ll be moving to Cassadaga any time soon thanks to Anthony Diblasi’s creepy ghost story about seances, serial killers, and going batshit insane. Nope, don’t need any psychics connecting me to dead relatives, only to have a vengeful spirit latch itself onto me. Talk about putting a cramp on your social life, am I right? Hey, Matt, want to go out for drinks tomorrow night? Sure, but I’ll probably be haunted by a ghost at some point, so when I start screaming bloody murder and hearing voices in my head, just ignore me, I’ll snap out of it in like thirty minutes. Just one of the side effects of summoning lost souls, you know the drill bros.

Anthony Diblasi (Dread) is breaking away from the macabre universe of Clive Barker, but not without taking some disturbing imagery along with him in his new film, Cassadaga, starring Kelen Coleman (“The Newsroom”) and Kevin Alejandro (“True Blood”).
Cassadaga is actually a real place that’s deemed the Psychic Capital of the World, an interesting backdrop for a story that centers around a deaf woman attempting to contact her sister from the beyond only to wind up being caught between a malevolent spirit and a serial killer dubbed Geppetto. Diblasi was kind enough to share a few words about Cassadaga with Dread Central a little earlier this week.
DC: I was just down in Austin for Fantastic Fest and they showed the Cabal cut of Nightbreed and I was just curious if you’d seen it yourself.
Ad: Yeah, and I am really eager to see how those guys clean...

Plucking disparate elements from the air and planting them in a slowly-burning field of Southern horror tropes, Cassadaga eventually reveals itself to be more of a mystery drama than any kind of suspense or horror piece. And what at first appears to be a grab bag of half-baked ideas eventually resolves into a cohesive picture of a woman dealing with crippling memories and an uncertain future. As played with empathy by Kelen Coleman, Lily has physically survived the horror of losing her younger sister, who was in her care as an adult guardian after the passing of both their parents, in an automobile accident. But emotionally, Lily is still devastated. In an effort to change her life, she applies for and wins an art scholarship...

These days, affluent baby boomers get their cheap epiphanies from This American Life and Ted talks, whose disruptive entrances into the market undercut incumbent sources of insights such as literature and thinking. Like the Saw franchise, Cassadaga, directed by Anthony Diblasi, attempts to leverage the horror genre in the service of inducing epiphanies, but keeps tripping over its confused tangle of genres. Kelen Coleman plays Lily Morel, a deaf woman whose name evokes flowers and elusive mushrooms, and whose disability in no way hinders her investigation into a ghost haunting or the entrapment of a serial killer. Really! Her deafness literally never serves to endanger her or affect the plotting at all; this film is Ada-compliant. Mourning the untimely dea...

Kelen Coleman is a busy lady. In addition to guest starring and recurring roles on a variety of buzz-worthy small screen shows — “The Mindy Project,” “Hart of Dixie” and, perhaps most notably, HBO’s “The Newsroom” — she also has a new movie hitting theaters this week. In the supernaturally-tinged horror film “Cassadaga,” Coleman stars as Lily, a post-lingually deaf artist who, in trying to attain closure with her recently deceased younger sister, accidentally summons forth the vengeful ghost of a murdered woman. For ShockYa, Brent Simon recently had a chance to talk to Coleman one-on-one about the movie, her college years at Unc-Chapel Hill, her budding career and what [ Read More ]

Despite having seen both of Anthony Diblasi’s previous films, Dread and Cassadaga, on the big screen at Frightfest, it’s safe to say I’m not the biggest fan of his work – his two prior movies were, at least for me, very much middle-of-the-road efforts that did nothing to surprise or excite. So going into Missionary I’ll be brutally honest and say that I wasn’t really expecting much.
The film tells the story of single mum Katharine Kingsmen, who’s having a hard time raising her son Kesley on her own. So when two Mormon missionaries arrive at the door to preach the gospel, she doesn’t see any harm in them playing football with him. But for Elder Brock it’s the prelude to a...

If you're curious as to what exactly 'Paymon' is, all you need know is it's the latest film project from filmmaker Anthony Diblasi, which means it's one to look out for. Diblasi served as producer on several Clive Barker projects such as 'Midnight Meat Train' and 'Book Of Blood,' then made his directorial debut with 'Dread,' one of the few great adaptations of Barker's works from his infamous Books Of Blood series. His 2nd feature 'Cassadaga' is due out later this year, as is 'Missionary,' but that hasn't stopped him from tackling his fourth full length feature 'Paymon,' a Charles Manson-inspired horror flick which is currently shooting.
In 'Paymon,' officer Jessica Loren has the last shift at a transitioning police station, assigned to wait for a hazmat crew who’s coming to pick up bio-hazard waste from the armory.
