A pleasant surprise
free201525 October 2012
Had the pleasure of seeing an early screening of this film, and while it's not going to win any awards, it deserves credit for an authentic and original story. I didn't have high expectations going in, but I left with a sense of wonderment that this low budget flick was actually able to surprise me. I can't say that for much of the drivel being produced these days.

The previous reviewer seems to be hell bent on pointing out the small details, but can't spell the director's name properly. I agree that the production value was not on par with the Usual Suspects (seriously?), but despite its flaws, Ruiner was able to do something fresh and entertain me.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more from Charlie Di Vito.

If you love independent film...

...you wont love The Ruiner. When I think of great independent film, I think of Mean Streets, The Usual Suspects or Clerks. Contrary to what the last reviewer wrote (who is obviously either the director or directors mother), The Ruiner is none of the above. Independent film doesn't mean you are required to have cameras that are shaky, editing that borders on laughable and spotty sound. Boom mikes are not required to appear randomly in shots. It has been proved time and again that it is possible to make something competent and enjoyable without a six figure budget. Unfortunately for anyone who watches this mess, competent and enjoyable are two words that do not apply. I am curious as to what kind of camera was used in this production. Was it VHS? BETAMAX? The only reason that this film didn't get a score of 1/10 is based on the fact that the actors in this movie did an admirable job with very little to work with as far as story and direction go.

Warning: Spoilers
I stumbled into a screening of this film in June thinking here we go again. Another low budget piece of crap who's novelty runs short after thirty minutes, I'm done.

But a funny thing happened. I was actually into it. The film tells an interesting story. I mean I understand the film is made on a shoe string budget and some of the performances were not great. But i found myself following the story and continuing to keep me interested.

Dir Charlie DeVito takes us back to those days of the great exploitation horror films of the seventies (ex. Rabid, Texas Chainsaw) where they are extreme in some of the violence and sex still give us a compelling story.

The film revolves around a cop searching for his soul as he tries to chase a serial killer. Meanwhile a married couple is taken hostage and tortured by one creepy son of a bitch. One memorable scene is where the stranger asks the married couple if he can watch as they engage in sex.

In short, Charlie De Vito is a filmmaker to look for in the future trust me this guy is going to move on to bigger things. Mark my words.
