The European Film Academy will hold the 26th European Film Awards in Berlin on December 7th, 2013. To make fans part of the celebration every year the audience gets to choose the winner of the Efa People's Choice Award. This year one lucky fan will also have the chance to attend the awards ceremony and be part of a fantastic event that brings together Europe's greatest film stars, directors, actors and actresses.

★★☆☆☆ A filmmaker torn between intimate tales set in his native Iceland and big-budget Hollywood genre pieces (next up is the Mark Wahlberg/Denzel Washington actioner 2 Guns), director Baltasar Kormákur is back on familiar soil with 'based on a true story' survival drama The Deep (Djúpið, 2012). Sparsely plotted and unforgivingly sombre, Kormákur character study centres upon portly fisherman Gulli (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), who is forced to endure the near-freezing temperatures of the Atlantic after his trawler is dragged under by a snagged net. Left alone to consider his seemingly imminent death, Gulli suddenly spies land.
However, in a classic case of 'out of the frying pan and into the fire', our bedraggled everyman finds himself washed up onto a treacherous lava field, its long petrified magma transformed into razor-sharp daggers that tear at the feet of this unfortunate soul to ribbons. Staggering through this Hell on Earth, Gulli miraculously arrives back...

Austria's "Amour," France's "The Intouchables," Chile's "No," Denmark's "A Royal Affair" and Iceland's "The Deep" are among the nine films that remain in the race for the Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film, the Academy announced on Friday morning. Michael Haneke's critical favorite "Amour" and the international box-office hit "The Intouchables" have been leaders in the race from the start, and are augmented by a list made up mostly of the highest-profile films in the running. The shortlist is unlikely to cause much of the talk about egregious snubs that sometimes plagued...

As part of an early look at next year’s Oscars, Prize Fighter — in an ongoing series — is highlighting several of the directors and official entries submitted by a whopping 71 countries competing for the Academy Award for best foreign language film.
Iceland’s official 2013 foreign film Oscar entry The Deep, directed by Baltasar Kormákur, opens with a view of a boat submerged in the dark, deep, green ocean.
It’s an eerie, almost calm shot, and foreshadows the rest of the film, about an absolutely tragic real-life incident in Iceland in 1984, when a fishing boat capsized off the coast leaving only one survivor,...

2012′s Toronto International Film Festival is set to officially announce its initial line-up later today, but Variety let the cat out of the bag, at least partially; and it’s quite astounding. Most of our most-anticipated films of the year will be premiering at the Canadian festival, notably Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder, Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer‘s epic-sounding Cloud Atlas, Rian Johnson‘s Looper (which will open the fest), Ben Affleck‘s Argo, Dereck Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines and much, more more.
Coming from Sundance, the only mentioned film was Ben Lewis‘ John Hawkes-starring The Sessions, while Cannes premieres include Matteo Garrone‘s Reality, Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt, Pablo Larrain‘s No and Jacques Audiard‘s Rust and Bone. One of the biggest surprises is a new film from Noah Baumbach, starring Greta Gerwing titled Frances Ha. There’s also The Avengers director Joss Whedon...

Back in January, we told you that director David O. Russell (The Fighter) was in talks to re-write and direct the adaptation of Steven Grant and Mat Santolouco‘s Boom! Studios comic series, Two Guns.
Universal Pictures picked up the project back in 2008 as a vehicle for Vince Vaughn (The Dilemma), who was reportedly attached to star in the film. Then, Just two months ago, we brought you a report when Mark Wahlberg (Contraband) began negotiations to take one of the two lead roles in the big-screen adaptation, presumably alongside Vince Vaughn (Lay the Favorite).
David O. Russell has in fact written the current draft of the screenplay, but will reportedly not be at the helm of the project. Variety reports that Wahlberg’s Icelandic Contraband director, Baltasar Kormákur (Djúpið) is currently in negotiations with Universal Pictures to direct the project.
