No one could blame Grey’s Anatomy viewers if they asked to be prescribed mild sedatives after last Thursday’s episode found both Owen and Amelia falling into out-of-left-field hookups — the former with Arizona’s latest love, Carina; the latter, with her mentor, Koracick. But what do the dalliances mean for the separated couple? “I think they’re just practicing not being married people,” Caterina Scorsone told TVLine at the ABC drama’s recent 300th-episode bash. “They’re trying to just break the seal.”

Ayesha Curry is doing it all, but could a turn on the dance floor be in her future?
The chef extraordinaire, who recently launched her own cookware line The Ayesha Curry Kitchenware Collection, stopped by Et’s Burbank studio on Wednesday and revealed to our Deidre Behar that she’s been on the shortlist to join Dancing With the Stars.
Asked whether her husband of six years, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, would ever entertain joining the show down the line, Curry joked that someone in their immediate family is desperate for him to put on the dancing shoes. “I don’t know if he would make the decision to do it, but his mom really wants him to do it,” she said with a laugh.
The 28-year-old mother of two shared that she’s actually been asked to compete on DWTS.

*before going into the review, let’s get the obvious out of the way: we at Age of the Nerd would like to take a moment to say we are fully aware of Victor Salva’s criminal history and the moral dilemma that is presented when discussing or financially supporting his movies.
The horror landscape has changed rather drastically in the sixteen years since controversy magnet Victor Salva first introduced slasher-starved audiences to “the Creeper” (Jonathan Breck) and his taste for body parts in the ‘Jeepers Creepers‘ franchise. Since then, there’s been the rise of the torture porn sub-genre and filmmakers like Eli Roth and Rob Zombie, the supernatural found footage genre, an obnoxious onslaught of inferior remakes (fingers shall be pointed specifically at The Wicker Man, When a Stranger Calls and Black Christmas) and a needed return to form thanks to filmmakers like James Wan, David Sandberg and Jennifer Kent.

THR says the Black Samurai reboot being developed by Jerry Bruckheimer and RZA has tapped Common to join their team in resurrecting the franchise. The series is said to be an update of the original novels of the same name and the Blaxploitation film starring Jim Kelly.
For those who may be too young to remember the film, the story follows Army Ranger Robert Sand who's life is transformed when a Japanese master invites him to train as a samurai. Down the road, all of his friends and master are killed and Sand sets out to exact revenge on behalf of his fallen comrades. Starz notes that this updated series will be a mashup of the classic kung-fu genre mixed with the modern spy drama.
Sounds like exciting stuff assuming everything goes well and this show actually goes to series! Are you down to see Common kicking ass as Robert Sand?...

Meet Samuel L. Jackson, master lyricist.
The Hitman's Bodyguard is marketed as being a mashup of all the things audiences know and love about the actor (humor, profanity and general badassery), but it turns out it will also feature a new Jackson talent: songwriting.
On Friday, Jackson debuted "Nobody Gets Out Alive," a song he wrote and performed for the film's soundtrack.
"He and Ryan Reynolds were sitting, just the two of them, in his car talking, and he just kind of breaks out into song. I think it was more or less improvised on the set," composer Atli Orvarsson tells...

As part of hunky boy band 98 Degrees, Jeff Timmons grew accustomed to hordes of women going wild with ecstatic screams each time he went shirtless. “98 Degrees weren’t known as being incredible dancers -- we were the guys next door who were fit,” the now 44-year-old performer laughs. At 18, Channing Tatum also got a taste of serving as eye candy while working as a stripper in Florida. Model Tyson Beckford, 46, meanwhile, recalls walking past New York’s Chippendales club as a kid, thinking, I want to look like that someday. He has since become used to ogling eyes excitedly checking him out in shirtless ad campaigns.
While the thrill of physical adoration has undeniably helped the trio make a buck over the years, none of them could have imagined that years later they would help transform the male entertainment scene in the strip show-saturated city of Las Vegas. Tatum recently launched Magic Mike Live, capitalizing on the...

Six strangers wake up in the same room and are forced to take part in an experiment where only one will survive. They have two hours to make their decision as a group in The Eyes, a new suspense thriller from director Robbie Bryan. With The Eyes now playing in select theaters, we had a chance to catch up with Bryan for our latest Q&A feature to discuss the movie's incredible journey to getting made, the "visual ballet" of the movie's most challenging scene, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Robbie. What made you want to bring this screenplay by Robert T. Roe’s to life on the big screen?
Robbie Bryan: It was back in early 2014. I had been trying to put together this feature film called Black Hat, which is a sort of Little Miss Sunshine set in...

Grantham, Virginia. A house-full of grisly murders. The body of an unidentified female is found half-buried in the basement.
Down the road is the Tilden Mortuary and Crematorium, a family business that has been running for almost a century. Inside, Tommy (Brian Cox) and Austin (Emile Hirsch), father and son, go about their autopsy work with rock music blaring, entirely comfortable in their mentor and apprentice roles.
Except Austin doesn’t see his future in this business. He and his girlfriend (Ophelia Lovibond) plan on moving away, breaking the Tilden family chain. But then, in classic “final job” style, the Jane Doe from the murder house is delivered to the autopsy table.
The sheriff needs a cause of death, so Tommy and Austin have one night to unveil the mystery. The...

Last year the The Globe & Mail released an article entitled "What is Wrong with the Canadian Film Industry?" that outlined the problems facing our country’s cinema: low box-office numbers, a crisis of English-Canadian identity, an inability to compete with Hollywood entertainments etc., etc. Focused entirely on the industry, the piece fails to mention the resurgence that had been taking root for quite some time. 2015 was an important year for Canadian cinema, but while Room, Hyena Road and Wet Bum ate up the article’s word count, three of the year’s great Canadian films by emerging directors went unnoticed: Isiah Medina’s 88:88, Kurt Walker’s Hit 2 Pass, and Kazik Radwanski’s How Heavy This Hammer. Equating cinema with ‘content,’ a product to be bought and sold, the article is as much a reflection of the problems with Canadian cinema as an exposition of it. But this insidious...

Thomas Haden Church isn’t getting a divorce. Neither is Sarah Jessica Parker. Nor Sharon Horgan.
The stars and creator behind HBO’s “Divorce” don’t have pressing personal reasons to make a show about one of the most prominent painful life experiences. They don’t need an outlet for their own struggles. They’re not reliving anything onscreen.
So why do it? To answer that is to also answer why we should be watching HBO’s latest comedy, a prospect some have deemed too difficult for their weekly viewing schedule.
“With ‘Divorce,’ what’s relevant is how prescient it’s going to be to so many people,” Church told IndieWire before the series premiere. “I don’t like the word familiar, but how sort of applicable it is. We’re going to show people that [this couple are] strangers, but they’re recognizable strangers. Their life experience could very easily be the...

Ciara has confirmed she's expecting a baby with new husband Russell Wilson.
The singer announced the happy news on her Instagram on Tuesday (October 25), which also marked her 31st birthday.
Alongside a black and white picture of her and Russell cuddling, Ciara wrote: "On this special Birthday I received an abundance of love from friends and family.. and I'm excited to Finally share one of the Greatest Gifts of All that God could give..."
She concluded the message with several baby related emojis.
The Goodies star had sparked rumors she might be expecting by sporting baggy clothes over the past few weeks - a sharp contrast to her usual figure-hugging ensembles.
Ciara employed similar fashion tactics three years ago, when she fell pregnant with her son Future Zahir with her ex-fiance, rapper Future. She only confirmed her baby news three months later, in January, 2014.

“Second verse same as the first” isn’t exactly how you could describe composer Paul Leonard-Morgan’s life and career, but you could say some of his life’s melodies repeat now and then. Whether it be twice writing music for a thriller about a brain-enhancing drug or annual fundraising for a hospital while clad in a kilt, there are a few refrains in Leonard-Morgan’s life, though he’s found ways to make those familiar experiences fresh each time. Leonard-Morgan composed music for the 2011 thriller Limitless, starring Bradley Cooper. CBS also hired him when the network was developing a TV adaptation of the movie, about the people who discover the powers of a mysterious drug called Nzt-48 that gives users access to every neuron in their brain (based on the myth that humans only use 10% of their brain). Limitless, which premiered last fall, didn’t get renewed for a second season on CBS,...

Robert Mapplethorpe decided he was an important artist long before he was even making important art. Growing up in 1950s Queens, New York, he escaped to art school in Brooklyn, searching for a way to transform himself. He was the outcast who took drugs and dressed weird, until he found his path to stardom. That ambition shines through in the new HBO documentary, Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures. Directed by Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey — the producers of RuPaul's Drag Race who have also examined oddballs and outliers in documentaries such as Party Monster,...

Camper Van Beethoven front man David Lowery, a vocal opponent of streaming services, filed a class-action lawsuit against Spotify on Monday requesting $150 million in damages over unpaid royalties. According to Billboard, Lowery has accused Spotify of “knowingly, willingly, and unlawfully” reproducing and distributing copyrighted music to over 75 million users without obtaining the proper licensing. The suit claims the company failed to identify or locate the owners for payment and showed no signs or intentions of doing so. Songs mentioned in the complaint include "Almond Grove," "Get On Down the Road," "King of Bakersfield," and "Tonight I Cross the Border.” In addition to Lowery, the class proposed will include over 100 artists whose music Spotify has reproduced illegally, with Lowery acting as the representative during litigation. The suit also requests the court have Spotify remove the songs in question from its database, pay for an outside auditor to identify...

Mere minutes into NBC’s broadcast of The Wiz Live! you could feel the Internet – or at least its nicer corners – breathe a huge sigh of relief. The network’s previous attempts at creating a classic for a new generation with The Sound of Music Live! and Peter Pan Live! resulted mostly in deflated fodder for live-tweeters hoping to get their fifteen minutes. Against all odds, The Wiz Live! managed to shake the Hate-Watch label and put on a legitimately entertaining show. Thanks to solid casting, spotless performances, and a strong choice of source material, NBC finally found a way to make appointment television satisfying for families and musical theatre fans alike.
Based on L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Wiz eased on to the Broadway stage in 1975 as a soulful retelling that featured an all-black cast and a score with roots in pop and R&B.

iZombie is now three episodes deep into its fantastic second season and shows no signs of slowing down. While the show has maintained every member of its principal cast from the first season, several of them will go in bold new directions this year. We have seen the start of their respective journeys, although they are undoubtedly the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Executive producer Rob Thomas (not the guy from Matchbox Twenty) recently sat down with DC Comics’ official website to tease what’s to come.
The emergence of Max Rager executive Vaughn Du Clark, brilliantly played by Steven Weber, as this season’s big bad was the first thing that needed to be addressed. After all, his tainted product was partially responsible for the zombie plague.
“The world is getting bigger,” affirms Thomas. “There are more moving parts this season. Last year, Blaine was really the sole big bad.

The Isa of the Day segment of SydneysBuzz resumes for the Cannes Film Festival 2015. ISAs, or International Sales Agents, help to bring films into global distribution by selling distribution rights to distributors worldwide.Topics include new trends in distribution and sales, inspirational success stories, film slates and more. A worthy read for any serious filmmaker looking to have a better understanding of the chain of business between producing a film and sharing it with the world.
About Stray Dogs
Based in Paris, Stray Dogs Films is a dynamic film distribution & sales company with a commitment to distributing quality films and sharing the unheard voices of filmmakers from around the world. Stray Dogs Films aims to create original and provocative films with a clear vision and make a positive mark on global cinema. Stray Dogs’ debut slate features Ben and Joshua Safdie’s Heaven Knows What starring Arielle Holmes as a young heroin addict who finds mad love on the streets of New York.
Founder of Stray Dogs Films Nathan Fisher is a shining example of the new wave of young, open-minded entrepreneurs in global distribution and film sales. His last position before he started his own company was Head of Sales for the Other Angle Pictures. Nathan also spent his first days in the film industry as an intern for Voltage, Anonymous Content, and Wild Bunch in Los Angeles.
What’s important to understand about Nathan is that he is open to new forms of distribution technology – especially in this time where the younger generations are consuming most of their content online. Nathan also works hard to share the voices of filmmakers from outside the west. Grabbing a backpack and hopping a plane to Trinidad or the Philippines just to spend time with unknown filmmakers is the norm for him. His work to share these unheard voices is necessary in a time where Hollywood dominates theatres worldwide.
Founder of Stray Dogs Nathan Fischer shares more:
We decided to launch Stray Dogs and focus on director-driven edgy films, because I think there is an increasing appetite for these types of films in the market. Many established sales agents already focus on dramas for more mature audiences, but I think director-driven genre movies really appeal to a younger audience, which is more likely to watch these films in other ways like VOD. There is a space for that in the market, which is overcrowded with traditional dramas, and we are trying to fill that gap.
Down the road, I believe the frontier between sales agents and distributors will be redefined. The sales agents will have to sometimes take on the role of distributors, set up releases and work closely with festivals, exhibitors and VOD platforms, and do the PR themselves. That’s what I’m trying to set up with my own company.
I lived in Los Angeles for a couple years, working an assistant and intern to various sales agents and producers like Voltage and Anonymous Content. I interned at Wild Bunch for a while, and also worked for talent and acquisition for several distributors.
My last job was Head of Sales and Acquisitions at Other Angle Pictures. I’ve had many short experiences, but very diverse. It was great to be able to understand the roles from all those great people and places.
I think we’re at the stage where we need to take steps and just try to do different things. It’s good when you don’t have much experience, because you’re less reluctant to try new things. A sales agent can be an actual partner of the movie.
I also travel a lot and lived in Asia for about a year. I got very inspired while I was there, and that’s why this work makes sense for me. I’m excited to represent films from these countries that I discovered and love very much.
We’re really excited to be working with talented directors from the equatorial south. We’re building long-term relationships with them and trying to get their films out there in different ways. We take more chances and create real partnerships with these filmmakers.
I was just in the Philippines. I personally travel to these places and hang out with the filmmakers. It’s very exciting. My backpacking years are not so far behind me! I actually stay in youth hostels and producers are happy because I don’t cost them too much. I prefer to spend money on market screenings or anything that really helps the movie. Spending time with the filmmakers, keeping my eyes open and developing long-term relationships with them – that’s what I want to do right now before I don’t want to travel as much. Now I can go anywhere and I love it.

Goin’ Down the Road
Written by William Fruet and Donald Shebib
Directed by Donald Shebib
Canada, 1970
Donald Shebib’s landmark 1970 drama Goin’ Down the Road was a watershed moment in Canadian national cinema, in part because it proved that there could be one. The very notion of a Canadian national cinema was relatively new when the film was released. Though the National Film Board (Nfb) was establish in the late 1930s, it was only in the 1950s that its focus shifted from war-effort propaganda to a very specific form of national soul-searching, wondering aloud who we were and what our place in the world was. The collective attempt at pinpointing Canada’s national identity would reach a fever pitch with the Centennial just around the corner, but ended up yielding precious few concrete answers (though it wasn’t for lack of trying, as Nfb-produced works like Helicopter Canada, commissioned specifically for Canada’s 100th birthday,...

The Bitter Ash
A rather precious thing happened in Montreal in the mid 1970s. Canadian cinema had been dominated by the National Film Board since its formation in 1940, and the generally-perceived character of Canadian film was all educational documentary, and not a lot of fun. Directors such as Claude Jutra, Don Owen, and Gilles Groulx struck off on their own to make the first Canadian new wave fiction films (A tout prendre [1963], Nobody Waved Goodbye, and Le chat dans le sac [both 1964] respectively), on the back of independents like Sydney J. Furie’s groundbreaking A Dangerous Age (1959) and Larry Kent’s student feature The Bitter Ash (1963), but for all their youthful, semi-bohemian trappings, these were still quite po-faced affairs. Then came the “genial loser” films of the 70s, led by Owen’s Goin’ Down The Road (1970), and others such as The Rowdyman (Peter Carter, 1972) and Paperback Hero (Peter Pearson, 1973), for the...

The rains finally let up about 30 minutes ago, and a chilly wind now blows across the tiny central California agricultural town of McFarland. A group of high school boys in running shoes and gray sweatshirts crowd around Jim White as he climbs onto a bicycle. On a wet patch of asphalt, just down the road from the razor wire festooned fences of a local prison, they stomp their legs, trying to stay warm. "How far we running today?" asks one of the boys. As her family members continue their vigil by her bedside, Bobbi Kristina Brown underwent a tracheotomy this week. The procedure isn't an indicator of a change in her condition, however. Evolve stole the show for a lot of people at last year’s E3 conference. The asymmetrical shooter easily had some of the longest lines, as gamers were clamoring to taste something truly unique. And, for the most part, people walked away absolutely enthralled with what the game seemingly had to offer. Fast forward nine months later, and what’s arguably the first major release of 2015 is finally out in the open. Unfortunately, though, it simply cannot live up to its own hype.
I was taught when there’s an elephant in the room that you should introduce it. With Evolve, there is a pretty damn big elephant in the room. The Dlc plan here is absolutely atrocious, and every single person involved at Turtle Rock Studios should be ashamed of it. On the very first day, there was $85.88 worth of Dlc in the store, including the Hunting Season Pass.

Looking, Season 2, Episode 4: “Looking Down the Road”
Directed by Ryan Fleck
Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa
Airs Sundays at 10 Pm on HBO
Looking has often loved its secondary characters more than its leads. Patrick, Dom, and Agustin have continually paired off with people, in both romance and friendship, who are smarter, nicer, and more together than they are. Richie, Lynn, Doris, and Kevin have been the voices or reason, of patience, and of exasperation throughout the show’s run. They’ve shared their advice, which has usually fallen on deaf ears, and have tried to form meaningful bonds with the central trio of characters, with varying degrees of success. This intelligence gap, or empathy gap, has been detrimental to the success of the show. Why follow the lives of a group of emotionally stunted, unambitious babies when this rich tapestry of noble humanity is one degree away? Why can’t...

“I just want to clarify that I don’t have Down’s Syndrome.”
Oh the horror. Low budget movies. This one is titled Nobody Gets Out Alive (2013) written and directed by Jason Christopher. Will anyone get out alive? Yes. So much for titles. Jenn (Jen Dance) is just out of the hospital after having a nervous breakdown or something and her friend Michele (Chelsey Garner) organizes a trip out to the woods. Michele hopes to be proposed to by Mike (Shaun Paul Costello). They’re joined by a poor man’s Jay Mohr named Deron (David J. Bonner), a Zack Galifinakas impersonator Jared (Chris Ready), a Tara Reid hopeful called Angie (Nikki Bell), and a pointlessly aggressive jerk called Danny (Matthew Nadu). For some reason, the murderer, Mr. Isth (Brian Gallagher)—worst evil name ever—kills the people who run a convenience store. Anyway, the gang go out to the...

Nobody Gets Out Alive is writer/director Jason Christopher’s love letter to slasher films of the 70′s and 80′s, and the movie was released this week to DVD by Image Entertainment. I recently had the chance to catch up with Jason, and we talked about putting together his first feature, his love of directing over writing, and what’s next:
Why did you decide on Nobody Gets Out Alive as your first feature film and what movies inspired the story?
Jason Christopher: 90′s horror movies just didn’t do it for me because there was a completely different vibe from the 70′s and 80′s horror movies. Then Scream came out and horror movies started to pick up again. I think the last best slasher of the 80′s was Intruder in 1989.
I always wanted to write a script that was my thanks to the 70′s and 80′s slasher genre.

Nobody Gets Out Alive – spoiler alert? Nah, I’ll throw all of you off Jason Christopher’s scent and suggest there’s much more going on, but the question is do you believe me? I don’t know, or do I? Am I totally in your head right now, mindf#cking you P. Diddy style from Get Him To The Greek? What movie am I even reviewing right now? Am I just wasting word count to wrap this thing up quicker?
No, because there’s something to be said about young Jason Christopher’s big-screen directorial/screenwriting debut, but unfortunately it’s nothing all too profound. Christopher undoubtedly displays his love for horror, a fantastic respect for the slasher films of old we yearn for, a love of practical effects, and en eye for entertainment – but his writing is still years away from maturation. Nobody Gets Out Alive is independent to the (broken) bone,...

And they mean it.
Bluntly stated, the horror genre has been flooded with unnecessary sequels that offer no actual scares. It wasn't always that way, though. The classics of slasher horror like Halloween and the first Friday the 13th are classics because they kept it simple. That old fashioned sentiment is practically oozing from first-time film maker Jason Christopher's 'Nobody Gets Out Alive', a horror film built in the style of those favored classics. And the best part is, you can watch it from inside the house!
