Sex & Nudity

  • Very mild
  • Magical girls are often shown briefly naked during transformation scenes, but their bodies feature no realistic anatomy.
  • The opening has madoka and another madoka (clone?) appear to be unclothed, but it is in brief flashes, and the cartoon style features no anatomy whatsoever and nothing in the anime is sexual. (Especially since the main characters all appear to be in their teens).

Violence & Gore

  • Moderate supernatural violence
  • Some intense fight scenes occur throughout the series. These fights often feature explosions and frenetic action. Some fights see certain characters bloodied or scuffed.
  • Some other scenes with some blood.

Profanity

  • "Damn" and "hell" are used very little, but are still present in the script. A later episode features two misogynistic men talking, using words such as "ass", "bitch" and "shit" and a muffled "mother-fu-"

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Very mild
  • A woman is alcoholic and she's sometimes drunk
  • A later episode of the series features two adult characters consuming alcoholic beverages in a bar.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Madoka Magica is a very dark (and is one of the darkest) magical girl anime.
  • Mature themes
  • Many of the Witch fights feature unusual and disturbing imagery.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • In the the final episode of the series, Madoka and Homura are completely nude for a scene. However, the nudity is much like a Barbie doll in that there are no nipples and their genitalia are smooth and featureless. However, Homura's bare buttocks are briefly visible in a few shots.

Violence & Gore

  • An early episode features one character's head being bitten off by a Witch. No blood is shown, and the actual scene of the character's head being bitten off occurs offscreen, but the event is still very obviously taking place.
  • The DVD version of a later episode features large but brief spurts of blood as one of the Witches is attacked.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The deaths of Kyoko and Sayaka in particular are extremely shocking and emotional.
  • Madoka seemingly dies at the end of the series. A scene in the final episode shows Kyousuke playing a violin, and Madoka and Sayaka are shown watching him while talking about what happened while they were alive, they then fade away. This can be upsetting and hard to watch for some people.
  • Madoka Magica at first seems to be a light-hearted anime about cute characters becoming magical girls similar to Sailor Moon, but in reality, It's actually a dark magical girl anime about Magical girls turning into witches or getting killed as a result of being killed by a witch
  • About midway through the show, a character starts bloodily stabbing witches after going slightly insane.
  • Mami's death by her head being bitten off is very disturbing and abrupt.
  • Most of the main characters die. This adds a very sad and grim feeling to the end or the middle of the show.
