Looking back at Kyle MacLachlan's career today, there's no denying that he's a great actor. Not only did he give a beloved performance as FBI agent Dale Cooper in the mysterious drama series "Twin Peaks," but he also went on to play two different versions of Cooper (or possibly three) in "Twin Peaks: The Return." He's also impressed mainstream audiences with his deranged portrayal of The Captain on "How I Met Your Mother," not to mention his recurring role as the wacky mayor in "Portlandia." And of course, who could forget that "Law & Order" episode where MacLachlan's character publicly shoots a child for totally justified reasons? The clip goes viral on Twitter every month or so, mainly because of how delightful it is to watch MacLachlan completely sell the ridiculous material the writers gave him.
But back when he was filming David Lynch's better-than-you've-heard 1984 adaptation of "Dune," however,...

William Brown makes his living as a sound engineer at Industrial Sound & Magic, helping to bring other people’s music to life. Currently, it’s the obnoxious Caleb Bang Jansen, “Emerson, Lake and Palmer? It sounds like Emerson getting buttfucked by Lake and Palmer.”

Now that the age of superheroes is ending, video game adaptations are the new cinematic frontier. We've seen TV adaptations like "Arcane" and "The Last of Us" receive critical acclaim, while big-screen adaptations like the "Sonic the Hedgehog" movies have proved to be huge commercial hits. The next highly anticipated TV adaptation of a beloved video game franchise is "Fallout," co-created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy ("Westworld") with Geneva Robertson-Dworet ("Tomb Raider") and Graham Wagner ("Portlandia") serving as showrunners.
"Fallout" takes place in 2296, 219 years after a great nuclear war that annihilated mankind. The survivors took refuge in underground bunkers known as Vaults. Those who leave the vaults encounter a dangerously hostile and brutal wasteland that, despite some elements of advanced technology, retains the aesthetics of 1950s Americana. It's a retrofuturistic story set hundreds of years in the future, featuring mutated monsters and intelligent (and somehow hot) ghouls. But to...

In a sketch called "Pull Out King," Lance and Nina discover they would like a baby after all, showing surprising growth. Carrie's new boyfriend, Sean, decides to stick with being a tax lawyer after an intervention with real musicians. The combination of NPR and concert tailgating is hilariously depicted, with Malcolm passing out from Yerba Mate tea and missing the live show.

It's not just video game movies that are conquering the world. Video game shows "The Last of Us" and "Twisted Metal" have also taken the streaming landscape by storm, providing unique visions of post-apocalyptic futures that hit uncomfortably close to home to anyone keeping up with the news in this the year of our lord 2023. "Pee-wee's Playhouse" was a staple of television from 1986-1990, both for kids who loved the silly talking chair, puppets, and silly scenarios, and for adults who loved the tongue-in-cheek humor. Sadly, Paul Reubens, who hosted the show as Pee-wee Herman, has died at the age of 70. The beloved comedian had a huge career, including roles in "The Blacklist," "Portlandia," "The Smurfs," "Pushing Daisies," "Blow," and the movie "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," as well as a very meta appearance in "What We Do in the Shadows." Still, his Pee-wee Herman persona is what Reubens is best known for, returning to the role in 2016 in "Pee-wee's Big Holiday," which he also wrote and produced.
"Pee-wee's Playhouse" is remembered as being incredibly smart and innovative for a children's show and boasted some big acting names like S. Epatha Merkerson, Phil Hartman, and Laurence Fishburne. There were a lot of rather mature jokes in there,...

Steve Buscemi's latest directorial feature, The Listener, will make its North American premiere at this month's Tribeca Film Festival. The Listener follows Beth (Tessa Thompson), a helpline volunteer, through one night of work in her Los Angeles apartment where she takes phone calls from callers struggling with different problems and anxieties. While Thompson is the only actress shown on-screen through the film's 96 minutes run, audiences will hear her interactions with several callers, voiced by actors including Rebecca Hall, Jamie Hector, Margaret Cho, and Alia Shawkat.
In a first-look clip, which you can watch below, Beth is questioned by a caller (voiced by Hall) about the difficulties she faces as a helpline volunteer. Beth shares that the most challenging part is after the caller hangs up when she is left to wonder if she upset or failed them.

Chicken Soup For The Soul, owner of Redbox, Crackle and Screenvision and the self-described largest purveyor of content to” value-conscious consumers,” saw sales soar to $110 million in the first quarter from $29 million. Tvod revenue is picking up, CEO Bill Rouhana told Wall Streeters, a precursor to a run on Redbox movie kiosks given the improved Hollywood pipeline.
The company has a rocky start to 2023. It announced its fourth-quarter and full-year numbers March 31, just six weeks ago, to coincide with a capital raise aimed at seeing it through a challenging time. But now “the movies are here,” Rouhana said on a call after earnings. He said 27 major theatrical releases will cycle through between May and July — “exactly what we were looking for since we took over Redbox.”
Chicken Soup acquired Redbox in a $375 million-deal in August of 2022.

The world of free, ad-supported streaming has grown tremendously over the past year. New free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) channels and services seem to pop up on a daily — and even hourly — basis. Most of those outlets provide traditional, familiar content from decades past that viewers can tune in to as a way to pass the time, because the shows and movies were low-stakes, unserialized shows from years ago. On Monday, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) announced that it was bringing a bit of prestige to the world of FASTs.

Live from New York... well, maybe not for much longer.
Saturday Night Live has been an American pop culture staple for nearly fifty years. But, if recent reports are to be believed, that's precisely where it will hang things up. Over the past year, rumors have circulated that head honcho Lorne Michaels is retiring from the venerable sketch comedy show when it reaches the historic milestone in 2025.
Kenan Thompson, who holds the record for longest-tenured cast member, has also stated that 50 is a nice number to stop at and that attempting to do the show without Michaels may not be the best idea. Michaels has been at the helm of the show he created for nearly its entire run, aside from a brief exit in the troubled early '80s era.

The Sharpie Is Mightier: ‘Pissed Off’ Writers with Clever Signs Make Noise from the WGA Picket Lines
“No pages without fair wages!” “Don’t you want to know how ‘The Last of Us’ ends?” “Please don’t make me have to move back to Ohio!”
The WGA Strike of 2023 is now in full swing, and the writers who formed picket lines Tuesday afternoon across Los Angeles and New York City are mad as hell. Speaking of lines, those clever ones above were just a few of the phrases written on the poster boards of Hollywood’s writers as they protested what they feel to be unfair wages, a devaluing of their work by the studios, networks, and streamers, and an “existential” fight for entertainment writing as a viable profession. If you believe the pen to be mightier, maybe don’t mess with writers.

AMC Networks is planning to launch a cheaper, ad-supported tier later this year.
The new tier, which is expected to launch by October, will be pitched at the company’s 2023-2024 upfront, which will include a presentation in New York on Tuesday. Pricing for the tier was not disclosed.
“This is a big moment for AMC Networks and for our advertising partners, because it not only creates a fully-ad supported distribution ecosystem, it also allows advertisers to buy our shows, genres and franchises in a much more comprehensive and impactful way,” AMC Networks chief commercial officer Kim Kelleher said in a statement. “With our new series content, library titles and other targeted streaming platforms that are all bundled into AMC+, partners can move beyond individual shows and even series and choose to ‘own’ whole genres and franchises, and drive messaging to target audiences no matter what they are watching or where.

The TV industry is entering a new era of IP being spread across streaming, linear, audio and gaming, according to media vet and Emmy nominee Evan Shapiro.
Delivering the Mip TV Media Mastermind keynote, Shapiro urged TV makers and studios who are yet to embrace multiple platforms to “not eliminate parts of your ecosystem simply because you’ve never done it before.”
“You have to think about how to reach the consumer with each piece of IP on different platforms,” added Shapiro, as he unveiled his latest Media Map showing how the major players fit within the current state of the industry.
“Don’t only think about binary traditions. Streaming, linear and social are all combining on a day-to-day basis and we are entering a new era.”
Shapiro, an NYU Business Professor who was an EP on Portlandia, stressed a “Yes… and” approach to making content and said players will...

Pete Davidson is just as famous for his personal life as his acting career, so it’s only fitting that his first leading television role sees him playing himself. The upcoming Peacock comedy “Bupkis” stars Davidson as Davidson, parodying the surreal levels of fame he has achieved in recent years with the help of some A-list friends.
The show is similar to Davidson’s 2020 film “The King of Staten Island,” which was directed by Judd Apatow and saw the former “Saturday Night Live” cast member in a role heavily inspired by his own background. Unlike that film though, “Bupkis” sees Davidson explicitly play a fictionalized version of himself, juggling acting roles, antics in the celebrity world, tabloid rumors, and his relationships with his working class family from Staten Island.
The trailer features many nods to real life tabloid stories and rumors involving Davidson, including his sister complaining about speculation about the star’s penis size.

Calling the success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” a testament to video-game IP would be a disservice to Illumination and Nintendo. Universal confirmed that it grossed $454 million worldwide in its first week and the Mario movie achieved something that even HBO’s “The Last of Us” did not: It’s a four-quadrant success.
A ton of kids turned out, sure, and it didn’t hurt that the last family movie in theaters was months ago with “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” However, as IndieWire reported last weekend, 84 percent of the film’s audience was above the age of 13. It’s a rare movie that attracts both kid-friendly crowds and nostalgic adults, that played for all genders and ethnicities, and performed strongly across international markets, and that made it the biggest worldwide animated opening of all time.
Success like that inevitably sets off a frenzy of aspiring copycats, but...
