Eight years after the last Star Trek film, Chris Pine is among the many who would like to know if there’s another voyage planned.
Pine is making the rounds to promote his new film, Poolman, and didn’t have anything to share on when the space franchise may be refreshed.
“I honestly don’t know,” Pine told Business Insider this week when asked about a new Star Trek. “There was something in the news of a new writer coming on board. I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot. As it’s always been with Trek, I just wait and see.”
Pine was clear that communication from Paramount about the franchise has been fairly minimal ever since the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016.
While television and streaming have lots of Star Trek projects, there has been no movement on a film.

Chris Pine was taken by surprise when news hit that Steve Yockey, creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” had signed on to write the script for “Star Trek 4.” Why? “I thought there was already a script,” the actor recently told Business Insider during an interview on his “Poolman” press tour.
Pine’s not wrong, as a potential “Star Trek 4” has gone through multiple iterations in the years since the 2016 release of “Star Trek Beyond.” Pine took on the role of Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 franchise reboot “Star Trek,” and reprised the character in 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness” and 2016’s “Beyond.” Variety exclusively reported in March that Paramount Pictures remained committed to making a fourth “Star Trek” film to be headlined by Pine and his co-stars.
The actor’s fellow “Star Trek” cast members include Zachary Quinto (as Cmdr. Spock), Zoe Saldaña (as Lt.

It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, May is filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering May 10 is Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the newest installment in the “Apes” franchise about a young chimp who must save his clan from the evil king Proximus Caesar starring Owen Teague, Freya Allen, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon and William H. Macy. Also hitting theaters is Chris Pine’s directorial debut “Poolman,” a noir comedy about a pool cleaner who stumbles upon a mystery at a Los Angeles apartment block starring Pine, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVito and Annette Bening. Review: (Note – Poolman Was Reviewed At TIFF 2023) In the fourteen years I’ve been covering TIFF, I’ve seen only a handful of movies that I’d say were shockingly bad. The Mickey Rourke/ Megan Fox/ Bill Murray dud Passion Play comes to mind. Poolman ranks with the worst movies I’ve ever reviewed at JoBlo. It’s a stunningly unfunny comic noir vanity project for star Chris Pine, who also directed and co-wrote the film. That it was made at all is a testament to the power of celebrity, as it has already become notorious at the festival for the amount of walkouts taking place at the screenings.
So why is Poolman so awful? It comes down to the screenplay and Pine’s grating lead performance as a kind of...

Undaunted by the disappointing showing for Universal’s “The Fall Guy” this past weekend, Disney and 20th Century are releasing “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the next installment of the popular franchise that began way back in 1968 with the sci-fi classic starring Charlton Heston, into over 3,900 theaters this Friday. As we know, Wonder Woman 3 is no longer moving forward now that James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over DC Studios, but it’s a choice Chris Pine doesn’t understand.
Chris Pine. who played Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984, told Business Insider that he was “stunned” when he learned Wonder Woman 3 had been axed. “I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” Pine said “I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.”
The actor had no expectations that he would have been involved in the third movie. “Me. No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo,” he said. “It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back.” Trevor was killed off in the first Wonder Woman...

Chris Pine is shocked Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” franchise is dead. The actor recently spoke to Business Insider while promoting his feature directorial debut “Poolman” and said he’s struggling to understand how Warner Bros. could pull the plug on a franchise that grossed the studio nearly $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
“I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” Pine said. “I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.”
Pine starred as Steve Trevor opposite Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman” in two Warner Bros. comic book tentpoles directed by Jenkins: 2017’s “Wonder Woman” and 2022’s “Wonder Woman 1984.” The director was developing a third movie for Gadot’s superhero when DC Studios brought in James Gunn and Peter Safran as its new leaders.

Chris Pine reflected on how his role in “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” changed his career — and life.
In the May 5 episode of “Sunday Sitdown With Willie Geist,” Pine spoke about being cast as Nicholas Devereaux in the 2004 film, which jumpstarted his career and turned his finances around.
“It was the height of summer and I was getting off at Magnolia. I was on my little Verizon tiny little flip phone, my silver one and I got a call from my agents that I booked the job,” Pine said. “I pulled over onto the side of the freeway and they said, ‘You’re getting paid $65,000,’ and it was like they had just told me I’d made $50 million. It was absolutely earth-shattering.”

Chris Pine felt like more than a million bucks after being cast in “Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” — he felt like $50 million, to be exact. Not that he made anywhere near that sum.
During an upcoming appearance on NBC News’ “Sunday Today with Willie Geist,” Pine recalled how joining the 2004 sequel film proved to be a pivotal point in his career. Pine played Prince Nicholas Devereaux who tries to woo Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) in her ancestral home country of Genovia.

Chris Pine made an anti-style statement at the Los Angeles premiere of Poolman to celebrate his directing debut at the Vista Theatre in Los Angeles.
Pine decided to go with a look that no one would ever expect on the red carpet. He rocked a tan jacket with a flower pin, denim shorts and brown boots. He showed his love for Los Angeles with a white shirt, reading, “I heart L.A.”
In the film, Pine stars as an amateur detective in the City of Angels, trying to solve a mystery.
In 2018, Pine spoke about acting in the nude for the film Outlaw King on The Graham Norton Show and shared other people’s reactions.
“I bear the ‘full monty,’ and it got a lot of attention,” he said. “I thought the witty reviews were brilliant, but what struck me most was that Florence Pugh bears everything, too, and no one commented.

Chris Pine’s Hollywood Hills neighbor has claimed the actor is barking up the wrong tree(s). As TMZ reports, Pine and music attorney Helen Yu are entangled in a legal battle over his ficus trees, which she alleges are causing destruction to her property.
According to TMZ, Yu claimed in legal documents that Pine has planted more than a dozen ficus trees. Pine’s trees have allegedly encroached on Yu’s property to such an extent that concrete has been uprooted and damage has been done to her home’s foundation.
It’s worth noting that Ficus benjamina are notorious for their potentially destructive roots. In a 1993 report, the United States Forest Service wrote that the tree’s roots “grow rapidly,” with a propensity for “invading gardens, growing under and lifting sidewalks, patios, and driveways.”
Yu originally filed a lawsuit against Pine in 2022, but the two parties quickly went into mediation.

"You waded out into the deep end, and now you're drowning right before our eyes." Vertical has debuted the full official trailer for the wacky stoner comedy titled Poolman, marking the directorial debut of actor Chris Pine. He shot this film in 2022 when the pandemic was still on, and now it's set for release starting in May in theaters. This initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last fall, but got terrible reviews (and even a few walk outs) from most critics at the festival. Poolman is described as a stoner riff on the noir classic Chinatown. It's about a hapless dreamer and would-be philosopher who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block in sunny LA. When he uncovers the greatest water heist, he does what he can to protect his precious city. Chris Pine also stars in this as Darren Barrenman, the titular "poolman", with Annette Bening,...

Our own Chris Bumbray caught Chris Pine’s Poolman at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and absolutely loved the movie, calling it “desperately unfunny,” “grating,” “and “one of the worst movies I’ve ever reviewed.” High praise indeed. The first trailer for Poolman was recently released, giving audiences the chance to check out this cinematic triumph for themselves.
Poolman tells the story of “Darren Barrenman (Pine), a native Los Angeleno who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block and fighting to make his hometown a better place to live. When he is tasked by a femme fatale to uncover the truth behind a shady business deal, Darren enlists the help of his friends to take on a corrupt politician and a greedy land developer. Hollywood star Chris Pine’s career has taken a downward turn since the release of Don’t Worry Darling. The controversy and chaos surrounding the film have put a “curse” on Pine’s once-promising career. Each subsequent project of the star since this film has faced unique challenges of their own.
Chris Pine in Outlaw King
His directorial debut was no exception. There have been glimmers of hope with films like Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves but overall, luck has been in short supply for Pine. What happened at the premiere of his directorial debut project is truly surprising.
Audience Walked Out of Chris Pine’s Directorial Debut Chris Pine in Poolman
Chris Pine made his debut as a director in Poolman, a film that he produced, co-wrote, and also starred in. Donning multiple hats on this project, the Wonder Woman actor must have expected the film to do well.

Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman is on the way, and you can get your first look right here.
Chris Pine’s Poolman is set to release next month courtesy of Vertical in the US and Signature Entertainment here in the UK. Poolman marks Pine’s directorial debut and is said to be an LA-based mystery comedy which to our mind, brings forth notes of The Big Lebowski or Under The Silver Lake.
Whether Poolman can hit these highs remains to be seen, although the film did find itself coming under some fire when it released at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Still, we won’t be judging it until we’ve seen it with our own eyes and the opportunity to do that will soon be arising. The film releases on the 10th of May in the US although here in the UK, Signature haven’t yet dated its release.

"Dear Moviegoer, thanks for watching my trailer." You're welcome, Mister Poolman. Vertical has unveiled a teaser trailer for the wacky stoner comedy titled Poolman, marking the directorial debut of actor Chris Pine. He shot this film in 2022 when the pandemic was still on, and now it's set for release starting in May in theaters around the country. It originally premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, but got terrible reviews (and even a few walk outs) from most critics. Poolman is described a stoner riff on the noir classic Chinatown. It's about a hapless dreamer and would-be philosopher who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block in sunny LA. When he uncovers the greatest water heist, he does what he can to protect his precious city. Chris Pine also stars as Darren Barrenman, the titular "poolman", with Annette Being, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh,...

Pic is based on a true story from Chicago Public Radio’s This American Life and follows Phil Loder (Dinklage), a twice divorced, frustrated, underpaid professor of economics, whose grand dream of home ownership is tragically out of reach. When an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes his way, Phil strikes a deal with Astrid Finnelli (MacLaine), a lonely, childless, near-death widow who offers her sprawling estate for pennies. Most of the central cast in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" were young when they appeared in Miloš Forman's 1975 movie. But with Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, and the inimitable Jack Nicholson (to name just a few of the film's stars), Forman was going to have to try really hard to mess up his adaptation of Ken Kesey's 1962 novel. Luckily, the Czech director actually did a standout job of it, delivering a film often cited as one of the 20th century's finest. After a decade of delays, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" made it to the big screen, and while Forman's direction was excellent, the movie perhaps wouldn't occupy as vaunted a position as it does without that top-notch cast.

After four months, the Sag-Aftra film and television union has reached a tentative deal, but we may be waiting a while for the art itself to triumph
It’s over. The stream of sweatshirted and placard-wielding Instagram no-filter/no-makeup posts from stars is at an end. The Sag-Aftra film and television actors’ strike in Hollywood is paused after four months, with a tentative deal giving actors larger minimum-pay increases, a streaming bonus and “consent and compensation” provisions against AI, although how exactly this last is to be enforced remains to be seen. For those who had thought of Hollywood as the very epitome of free-marketeerism, the spectacle of an actual strike, which remained reasonably popular and un-demonised in the press, and which produced a result, is quite startling. Especially as British Equity doesn’t have this kind of power.

DeWanda Wise is set to star in and executive produce the horror thriller Imaginary for Blumhouse Productions and Lionsgate.
The film, directed by Jeff Wadlow pre-strike, is set for a March 8, 2024 release. In Imaginary, Jessica (DeWanda Wise) moves back into her childhood home with her family, and her youngest stepdaughter Alice develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey.
Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s behavior becomes more concerning, Jessica intervenes, only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believes him to be.

Chris Pine welcomed the weekend with a burst of vibrant color when he stepped out for a post-workout coffee run on Saturday (October 7) in Los Feliz, Calif.
The 43-year-old Dungeons & Dragons actor tossed on a rainbow-bright cardigan over a blue PBS shirt for the trip. He also had on a pair of fitted leggings with looser shorts over top.
His hair was artfully mussed, and the star had some scruff growing in on his face. Chris finished off the look with chic shoes.

I’m a fan of Chris Pine: the early Shatner-smooth charisma, the powerful chops he’s displayed in movies like “Hell or High Water,” the authoritative snap of his performance as the cult-leader heavy in “Don’t Worry Darling.” So I take no vicious pleasure in saying that “Poolman,” a movie that Pine co-wrote, directed, and stars in, is not only the worst film I saw during the fall festival season but would likely be one of the worst films in any year it came out. Okay, maybe I’m taking a bit of vicious pleasure in saying that, since I had to sit through the goddamn thing. At the Toronto Film Festival showing I attended, there were a lot of walkouts.

Netflix shelled out a staggering $20 million for “Hit Man,” a (sort of) true-crime comedy from director Richard Linklater and star Glen Powell. The streaming service has acquired rights in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and other key international territories.
The movie, which played to enthusiastic crowds at Venice and Toronto film festivals, has been one of the few notable sales from this year’s fall festival circuit. Netflix also acquired Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Hour” out of TIFF for $11 million, while A24 nabbed the Colman Domingo-led “Sing Sing.” But deals have been slow to come together for other movies on the market, such as Chris Pine’s “Poolman” or Viggo Mortensen’s “The Dead Don’t Hurt.”

“Poolman,” Chris Pine’s directorial debut that had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, is a pastiche of Los Angeles past and present. It’s a film noirlike “Chinatown” and “L.A. Confidential,” but its characters are the New Age-y, socially conscious, showbiz-adjacent type. The film was supposedly the first to be screened on 35mm at TIFF in years, only to be projected in Dcp due to an unspecified technical issue.

If Harry Styles had actually hacked a gob of spit in Chris Pine’s lap, it may have been because he had recently watched the fellow actor’s feature directorial debut: the paranoid noir satire “Poolman.” It’s a film so abysmal in its writing and assembly that there were numerous walkouts during its premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF 2023 has played host to more actor-turned-directors than usual — Michael Keaton, Anna Kendrick, Viggo Mortensen, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and Finn Wolfhard, to name a few — and whether it’s a coincidence, or an attempt to get around the ongoing SAG strikes by having celebrity directors show face, programming “Poolman” in any capacity feels like a severe ethical breach.
There’s little point in singling out any one scene or idea. In isolation, nothing in “Poolman” is quite so offensive as to warrant outright derision on its own,...

Chris Pine is one of our best currently working actors, a performer who understands his assignments, capable of adding sincerity to both ridiculous genre roles like Edgin the Bard in the "Dungeons and Dragons" movie or Steve Trevor in "Wonder Woman," while also delivering gripping dramatic performances in films like "Hell or High Water." Now, he's adding director to his set of skills with his feature directorial debut, "Poolman," a neo-noir comedy about a pool cleaner uncovering a vast conspiracy.
Unfortunately, the film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, bellyflops almost as soon as it starts. The mystery is a convoluted mess, clearly attempting to marry the intrigue of "Chinatown" with the escalating chaos of a Coen Brothers movie while failing to make things compelling, all while the wacky humor falls flat. This is a movie with a great cast of comedic talent, including Danny DeVito and Stephen Tobolowsky,...

Toronto — When the crowd settles in, the lights go down and the movie starts, this year’s Toronto International Film Festival is more or less business as usual.
The rest of the time, not so much.
This is a TIFF with fewer stars, fewer studio movies and more films up for sale but fewer buyers willing to commit during the writers’ and actors’ strikes. That’s a distinctly different beast from the TIFF that would normally host a parade of movie stars on an array of red carpets every day, particularly during the opening weekend that concludes on Sunday.
And yet, this year’s festival has had a familiar assortment of potential awards movies, crowd-pleasers, bold indies, star vehicles, international projects and weirdo midnight romps. And in the theaters when those movies play, the number of movie stars in the seats can be beside the point for at least a couple of hours.

The Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing with a bevy of titles competing both for global distribution and awards prestige. The festival has had its share of lumps in the last month, losing their 28-year-sponsor, Bell Telephone, back in August, as well as being enmeshed in the on-going SAG-AFTRA/WGA duel strike. It is that strike that is the most insurmountable goal for the event, as actors and writers are unable to attend and promote their films, though some have with a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement.
And while the movie landscape is looking different, with movies switching release dates (in the wake of both the strike and Taylor Swift’s Eras tour), this year’s TIFF is showcasing what amazing movies are still being made. Here are 25 of the hottest titles to be excited for at this year’s TIFF.

Exclusive: Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman is set to make its world premiere Monday night at the Toronto Film Festival. Pine won’t be in attendance, choosing to stand in solidarity with his fellow actors amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. The film’s producer, Stacey Sher, says that not only is Pine proud to do so, she thinks the character at the center of his story would be on the same page.
“Chris comes from a family of actors who have struggled and he understands, especially given the time we are living in, Darren (the character Pine plays in Poolman) would of been out there on the picket lines making sure people were hydrated,” Sher says. “We all felt the film belonged at TIFF and so honored to be here because it is an audience festival. It is a place where things that are optimistic can connect with people as well.

It is never a normal “opening night” when it comes to the Toronto Film Festival, which is offering numerous films including the much anticipated Hayao Miyizaki film The Boy and the Heron, which is the key opening-night gala. But there are others including two exceptional directorial debuts from celebrated veteran stars Kristin Scott Thomas and Patricia Arquette making it all a very memorable kickoff for TIFF on many fronts.
In fact this is a festival this year featuring numerous premieres of films either marking the first time an actor has gone behind the camera as Thomas and Arquette have done, respectively, with Special Presentation North Star, and the Discovery Section opener Gonzo Girl, or taking their latest shot as a director. In the coming days we will also have Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour; Viggo Mortensen’s sophomore feature The Dead Don’t Hurt; Ethan Hawke’s Wildcat; Chris Pine...
