Zack Snyder’s Snyderverse still has immaculate domination and an astonishing fanbase with leading heroes, including Superman star Henry Cavill and Batman actor Ben Affleck. Certainly, Snyderverse was much darker going to the extent of his own vision of creating a DC Universe that might not be digestible for many fans.

The reign of Snyder and his Snyderverse is over, and it is unlikely that the director is coming back to DC anytime soon. But while reflecting on his DC characters, the director who has Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver slated for Netflix release this year, revealed that he has no regret in throwing Batman and Superman into one tough spot.

In a recent interview with Manga Passion, Mayu Nakamura, the manga editor of Shoujo Manga Magazine Bessatsu Friend, shed light on the preference of live-action adaptations over anime for shoujo manga.
Nakamura attributed this prominence of live-actions to business consideration within the industry, emphasizing that it’s a reflection of the demands of the domestic media market.
While acknowledging that shoujo manga could indeed be suitable for anime adaptation, Nakamura highlighted the significant demand for live-action series and movies within Japan, particularly targeting young women.
According to Nakamura, the Japanese film industry aims to produce a certain number of romance movies annually, often intended for viewing on dates. Shoujo manga, with their diverse romantic storylines, thus offer attractive source material for such productions. Furthermore, Nakamura noted the industry’s reliance on young male actors to portray leading roles in these romance movies, thereby enhancing their popularity.

World-renowned director Steven Spielberg was at the height of his career when he made the Oscar-winning film "Schindler's List," but he wasn't the only filmmaker who was interested in adapting the novel of the same name for the silver screen. The acclaimed director Billy Wilder, an auteur of classic Hollywood cinema who penned and directed such renowned films as "The Apartment" and "Sunset Boulevard," was also vying for the rights to turn this story into a movie. However, by the time Thomas Keneally's evocative historical novel was published in 1993, Wilder's career was already winding down.
For a long time, Wilder enjoyed one of the most prosperous careers in Hollywood. His Oscar-nominated 1944 film "Double Indemnity" is considered the signal film of noir cinema and the model of the femme fatale trope. After Wilder's smashing success "Sunset Boulevard" earned three Oscars in 1951, he quickly went on to release several star vehicles...

Team Taylor Swift and AMC Theatres caught Hollywood by surprise when doing an end run around the major studios and hiring AMC Theatres to distribute a secret movie chronicling her blockbuster Eras Tour. The concert pic opened to an estimated $95 million to $97 million opening over the Oct. 13-15 weekend in North America, even without the marketing muscle of a traditional studio (it came in slightly behind an expected $100 million). In exchange, she’ll get to keep a bigger percentage of ticket sales. Beyoncé quickly followed suit and struck a deal with AMC to release her Renaissance Tour concert pic on Dec. 1. While these stars are global icons and able to secure favorable terms for box office receipts, there are a few others who might have the leverage to run the playbook — if they choose to. The official opening gross for Eras Tour will be released Monday morning. — Pamela McClintock

The debut feature from Hamaguchi Ryûsuke, one of today’s preeminent auteurs, examines a series of intersecting love triangles as only he can, plunging headlong into the exposed-nerve confessions and unrequited attachments among a group of thirtysomethings. It begins when a couple, Kaho (Kawai Aoba) and Tomoya (Okamoto Ryuta), announce their engagement to their friends over dinner, where it’s also revealed the groom had an affair years earlier. While the two spend the evening apart, Tomoya follows his friends to the apartment of his former classmate (Urabe Fusako), with whom he’s in love, and are led into ever more vulnerable and shocking exchanges of emotional honesty. Though it was made as his student thesis project at Tokyo University of the Arts, Passion displays Hamaguchi’s rich and nuanced insight into modern relationships while establishing the thematic foundations for his later films.

Hamaguchi Ryûsuke’s Evil Does Not Exist is a turn away from the empathy of the filmmaker’s earlier work and toward an aesthetic that’s jagged and chilly. Watching the film brings to mind the evolution of the career of Paul Thomas Anderson, who went from crafting messy humanist spectacles to austere, immaculate chamber pieces that appear to exist in perpetual anxiety over being digested on conventional emotional terms. Evil Does Not Exist suggests a similar turn for Hamaguchi, and though this film finds him more than capable of playing the role of cryptic genius auteur, one may wonder what is lost in the trade.
Evil Does Not Exist’s first images embody the tension of the title, which seems to promise assurance with the meter of a warning. Tracking shots move through a forest from the vantage point of the ground, as if someone is on their back...

Greta Gerwig’s hot pink fantasia “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s intricately bleak historical drama “Oppenheimer” are both putting up box office openings to remember. In a summer movie season that has largely failed to keep spirits up, two bona fide blockbusters are showing that everyone can be a winner.
But the more winning winner between the two — the number one movie in North America — is Warner Bros. Discovery’s “Barbie.” After scoring $22.2 million on Thursday, the highest preview ticket sales of the year, the big screen bonanza about Mattel’s ubiquitous doll kept the superlatives going on Friday, adding another $48.2 million from 4,243 theaters. That’s a $70.5 million total — the biggest opening day of the year, blasting past the $51.8 million earned by “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” in June.
The pink wave may not stop there, as “Barbie” now looks to score the biggest three-day debut of 2023. In the crosshairs is...

Before funk queen Betty Davis died in 2022, she had begun working with reissue label Light in the Attic to see her music make its way into the 21st century. The label will rerelease four essential Davis albums on August 25th, in honor of the 50th anniversary of her self-titled debut.
Alongside the 1973 album, the reissue collection will include 1974’s They Say I’m Different and 2009’s Is It Love or Desire?, which was originally recorded in 1976. To round out the collection is Crashin’ From Passion, an album that curates Davis...

"Informative and enlightening." Greenwich Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled In the Company of Rose, a new biopic doc about an intriguing woman. The film premiered last year at Doc NYC and played at the Cleveland Film Festival a few months ago, with a final release set for June this summer. Here's the brief intro to the film via Doc NYC: "On Martha's Vineyard, three-time Tony-winning playwright and director James Lapine meets Rose Styron, the widow of the great American novelist William Styron. Over six years of periodic meetings, Rose shares the fascinating story of her complex life as a poet, journalist, human rights activist, and a life partner to William. The result is the tale infused with life wisdom for all ages." This sounds fascinating, and I always think there's some worthwhile wisdom to glean from these kind of people who have so many stories to tell.

The films of Maïwenn, like Maïwenn herself, tend to be divisive.
When they’re good, such as in the writer-director-actress’ breakthrough second feature, Polisse, they’re filled with hotblooded ensemble performances that channel the kinetic energy of John Cassavetes. When they’re not, such as in her last effort, DNA, they feel like overblown arthouse selfies where Maïwenn is the only star.
Either way, they hardly leave you indifferent, which is why the director’s biggest project yet, a $22.4 million biopic of the legendary 18th century French courtesan Jeanne du Barry, can seem so surprising. Sumptuously made and with enough jaw-dropping costumes — several of them courtesy of Chanel, one of the film’s sponsors — to warrant a separate runway show, Maïwenn’s lavish feature is also, well, kind of bland.

Friends meet at a restaurant for a birthday dinner in the opening scenes of Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Passion. Everyone loves the wrong person. Tomoya (Ryuta Okamoto) is engaged to math teacher Kaho (Aoba Kawai), but like the married Takeshi (Kiyohiko Shibukawa), is drawn to post-grad Takako (Fusako Urabe).
Their stories unfold in a world of diners, small apartments, and taxis familiar to fans of Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy and the Oscar-winning Drive My Car. Shot as his thesis film at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Passion is Hamaguchi’s second feature. Though filmed in 2008, it only now opens for its North American theatrical run on Friday, April 14 at Film at Lincoln Center.
Ahead of its release, we spoke to the writer-director via Zoom about his second feature, the Oscars, and future projects. Thanks to Monika Uchiyama for her translations.

Love triangles, the shifting fault lines of emotional landscapes, and the ramifications of common cruelty — in Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s second feature, 2008’s “Passion” (now hitting U.S. cinemas for the first time), the celebrated director grapples with the themes that would become a constant in his films to come. As one might expect from a picture made as a student thesis project, this is a filmmaker still in raw form, working through the ideas and techniques that he would refine with a sculptor’s precision to acclaim in later pictures like the Oscar-winning “Drive My Car,” “Happy Hour,” and “Wheel Of Fortune and Fantasy.” Those films are better places to start for Hamaguchi newcomers, but for everyone else, “Passion” offers an intriguing look at his earliest steps, with flashes of the brilliance that would eventually blossom in fuller form.

Moving into adult life is quite a transition, overshadowed by many obstacles, decisions and changes within yourself, which can often feel soul-crushing and confusing. It is also one of those phases in the life of a person, which has inspired many artists to reminisce about the nature of growing up, how the choices one makes are based on free will or other aspects, such as social pressure or gender expectations. In his second feature, produced as his thesis at Tokyo University of Arts, Ryusuke Hamaguchi's “Passion” tells a story of a group of characters caught in the middle of that period of transition in their lives. It is a movie which not only highlights the director's gift of working with actors, but also his sense of place and time, resulting in a story which is both contemplative and captivating.

Much of the world learned of the talent of Ryusuke Hamaguchi when Drive My Car miraculously and deservedly was nominated for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, the latter of which it won. However, many cinephiles have been banging the drum for the director since his 5.5-hour drama Happy Hour, Asako I & II, and his earlier 2022 release, Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy. The start of his career goes back even further and now, never before released in the U.S., his second feature Passion will finally get a theatrical release starting at NYC’s Film at Lincoln Center and LA’s Laemmle Royal on April 14. Ahead of the release, the new trailer for his Tokyo University of the Arts thesis graduation film, which he completed in 2008, has arrived courtesy of Film Movement.

Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s sophomore feature will soon be available stateside.
The Japanese filmmaker behind “Drive My Car” and “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy” first earned international attention with his thesis graduation film “Passion” out of the Tokyo University of the Arts.
Never before released in the U.S., the second feature from Hamaguchi examines a series of intersecting love triangles as only he can, plunging headlong into the exposed-nerve confessions and unrequited attachments among a group of thirtysomethings. It begins when a couple, Kaho (Aoba Kawai) and Tomoya (Ryuta Okamoto), announce their engagement to their friends over dinner, where it’s also revealed the groom had an affair years earlier. While the two spend the evening apart, Tomoya follows his friends to the apartment of his former classmate (Fusako Urabe), with whom he’s in love, and are led into ever more vulnerable and shocking exchanges of emotional honesty.

György Fehér may be best known as a producer on Béla Tarr classic “Sátántangó” and as a collaborator on Tarr’s “Werckmeister Harmonies.” But the fellow Hungarian filmmaker made two feature films of his own, mostly notably 1990’s “Twilight,” about a detective who comes out of retirement to help find a small girl’s killer. The all-but-lost film has mostly been relegated to the realm of torrenting, but now you’ll get a chance to see it burnished on the big screen thanks to a new restoration from Arbelos.

Formula One is, at root, a set of rules. An evolving specification for competition, a set of constraints. Like those of chess, or the Marquis of Queensbury, they are a framework for rivalries, for triumphs, for tragedies.
Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi were, briefly, team-mates at Ferrari. Across five chapters, their forenames, 'Passion', '1982', and 'Discovery', we see how their paths crossed, fatefully, and then fatally. Glossy and well constructed, it is not an easy watch. That in part because it features footage of three accidents involving its eponymous subjects. Those earn it a BBFC 12A rating for 'upsetting scenes', and while I agree with that conclusion I don't think they merited inclusion. To see men battered and bruised in the aftermath is distressing enough, but footage of their accidents feels exploitative. Two of them occured during practice or qualifying, so are unlikely to have been broadcast live.

Arbelos, a Los Angeles-based boutique film distribution company, has acquired North American rights to the new 4K restoration of Béla Tarr collaborator György Fehér’s landmark but long unseen Hungarian masterpiece “Twilight” (“Szürkület”). The restored version of the film world premiered in the Berlinale’s Classics strand on Monday. Hungary’s National Film Institute handled the sale.
Fehér, who made only two theatrical features, shot the black-and-white film at the end of the 1980s. Based on the crime novella “The Pledge” by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, it is the story of a retired detective who uses a girl as bait to try to catch a serial killer.
The 4K restoration, using the original 35mm camera negative and magnetic sound tapes, was carried out at Hungary’s National Film Institute. The color grading was supervised by the film’s cinematographer, Miklós Gurbán.

Tom Luddy, the co-founder of the Telluride Film Festival and a longtime producer for Francis Ford Coppola’s Zoetrope Studios, died on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 79.
His death comes on the verge of the festival’s 50th anniversary, as Telluride planned to salute the man responsible for establishing the Colorado gathering as a critical launchpad for international cinema. Luddy was shrewd cinephile with a daunting grasp of film history that informed his sharp opinions about the medium, much of which played a role in the unique nature of the Telluride community.
The festival drew crowds of major directors and industry insiders in tandem with amateur movie lovers attracted to the same welcoming environment he created for anyone who shared his passion for the movies. For many Telluride devotees, Luddy was its biggest draw — someone as emblematic of cinema’s global presence as the directors he championed.

Tom Luddy, the film producer who co-founded Telluride Film Festival, died Monday in Berkeley, California, after a long illness, the festival confirmed. He was 79.
The producer behind films like “The Secret Garden” (1993) and “Barfly” (1987) co-founded the festival in 1974 with Bill and Stella Pence and James Card. He served as co-director, then artistic director and adviser through 2022.
“Tom was a force in the film industry for nearly six decades,” Telluride wrote in a release. “He had a life-long love and passion for film, and a tireless dedication to film restoration, distribution, and exhibition. His presence will be profoundly missed by the many people whose lives were touched by his kindness, artistry, and his innate ability to bring people together to make something beautiful.”

Media coverage of Jean-Luc Godard’s death will fall short of what he merits. He was a game-changing creator on the level of Sergei Eisenstein, Charlie Chaplin, D.W. Griffith, and others who changed the grammar of film forever, but his best-known films are from a half-century ago. And there’s this: Under the standards by which successful directors are judged today — box office and awards — Godard was strictly a minor-league player.
His lifelong regard as a master is a tribute to his films above all, but it also speaks to a cinephile culture that elevated and supported him for decades despite the general public’s disinterest.
In the U.S., Godard’s films initially received erratic distribution with short-run showings at a few big-city theaters; even his best-known titles like “Breathless” and “Week-end” received marginal releases. They appeared erratically, out of order, and sometimes not until two or three years after their public debuts.

The greatest filmmaker in the world has died. And that’s a title Jean-Luc Godard has held for a very long time. His influence on cinematic form and language of the past 60 years has been foundational, but Godard’s best movies are not museum pieces to be studied: They are vibrant, energetic, sexy, full of color and smoke and crepuscular shadows that envelop you. They are alive. And they will continue to be though their maker is not.
The Swiss-born filmmaker stripped cinema down to its essence — all you need to tell a story on film is “a girl and a gun” he famously said — with a run-and-gun guerrilla style that eventually flowered into a finely wrought formalism. Besotted with movies, particularly Hollywood genre efforts (even if he hated U.S. politics), he didn’t just know movies either: painting appears all throughout “Pierrot le fou,” written text in “Vivre Sa Vie,...
