It was only a matter of time before “Black Mirror” came for the streaming industry, and Season 6 takes a couple of swings directly at Netflix right out of the gate. First with the star-studded, hyper-meta episode “Joan Is Awful,” which introduces the Netflix clone Streamberry (and an arsenal of Easter eggs and references therein). But Episode 2, “Loch Henry,” quiets things down to tackle a much more specific streaming ill — the soulless, exploitative true crime industrial complex and the constant stream of true crime docs digging up traumas from the past.
“Loch Henry” follows an aspiring filmmaker back to his Scottish hometown, where he intends to make a documentary about eggs, only to get sucked into making a film about the horrific crime case that transformed his hometown from a former tourist destination into a desolate ghost town. In “Black Mirror” tradition, the ensemble is a healthy mix of familiar faces,...

Warning: contains Inside No. 9 spoilers.
Right at the start, Bev told us she was celebrating a birthday. The significance of that indefinite article passed us by until she protested in the final minutes, “I never said it were my birthday.” Bev was celebrating on behalf of Ryan, the baby she’d snatched from his pram two decades ago as a disturbed 10-year-old, and killed, concealing his skeleton inside a child’s doll.
‘Hurry Up and Wait’ is an uncomfortable half-hour with a macabre conclusion, as befits the creators and director of Psychoville (which in Dawn French’s Joy, also featured a grown woman with a sinister attachment to a baby doll, that one following the death of her own son – the dead baby being the sine qua non of subversive comedy.) The episode is an emotionally cold grotesquerie driven by social awkwardness, cringe comedy, and light satire on the acting world.

BBC One has commissioned a high-profile TV drama on the infamous British sexual predator Jimmy Savile, who terrorized his victims in the corridors and dressing rooms of the British broadcaster.
ITV Studios’ BAFTA-winning true-crime specialist Jeff Pope is overseeing the project, which has the working title The Reckoning. It will trace Savile’s life from his working-class roots, to his rise to TV stardom as a BBC presenter, and his later years when he managed to keep his reign of sexual abuse concealed until after his death in 2011.
The BBC said Pope’s team is working closely with many people whose lives were impacted by Savile to ensure their stories are told with sensitivity and respect. His work as a presenter at the BBC enabled him to abuse 72 people, according to a 2016 investigation. Eight were raped and 11 victims were under the age of 12.

Working out of the London office, Boden will report into Ink Factory creative director Katherine Butler, former scripted creative director for Raw and deputy head of film at Film4.
Boden was most recently a development producer for Frank Spotniz’s Big Light Productions, and BBC Drama Studios, where she worked alongside Hilary Salmon and Neil McKay (“Appropriate Adult”). Prior to that, Boden worked as a development producer at Mainstreet Pictures, where her credits span drama projects for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky, including “Mr Selfridge”, “Scott and Bailey” and “Agatha Christie’s Poirot.”

The temperature has been rising on “Chernobyl” in our Emmy predictions since it premiered on HBO in May. That may be good news for Emily Watson, who plays the composite character of Ulana Khomyuk, a Soviet scientist trying to avert a global catastrophe. She’s looking like a strong contender for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actress, which would be the first Primetime Emmy nomination of her career. But could she actually pull off an upset by beating the two Pattys: Patricia Clarkson (“Sharp Objects”) and Patricia Arquette (“The Act”)?
As of this writing Watson ranks third in our odds, which are based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. That includes 22 out the 24 Expert journalists we’ve surveyed who are confident that she will be nominated. However, none of those Experts are betting on Watson to win. Instead, 18 of them back Clarkson following her Golden Globe win...

Keira Knightley‘s new period drama “Colette” earned rave reviews in England following its premiere at the London Film Festival. This biopic of the acclaimed writer is set in turn of the century Paris and is directed by Wash Westmoreland (“Still Alice”). It co-stars the terrific Dominic West as Colette’s husband, Willy.
Jordan Hoffman of The Guardian was among the most enthusiastic of the critics, noting: “the life of Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette makes for fascinating drama in a nuanced and inspiring film with a luminous central performance.” Singling out the actress for more praise, he observed: “Colette’s life is deserving of nuance and care, and that’s what she gets in this film. She also gets Keira Knightley is top form: luminous, clever, sexy and sympathetic. The scenes of physical intimacy are tasteful and few but have quite an impact. Much of what drove Colette was a need to be recognized.

The star of Little Women on her role in the BBC’s Little Women, why binge TV is good for female actors – and the virtues of Arsène Wenger
For Emily Watson, 2017 has been bookended in starkly contrasting styles. She started the year having wild sex in a House Of Commons broom cupboard in BBC One’s hit psychological thriller Apple Tree Yard. She finishes it in a much more wholesome role as much-loved matriarch Margaret “Marmee” March in a three-part Christmas TV adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. In between all the steamy scenes and bonnet-wearing, Watson also turned 50.
The Shakespearean stage actress came relatively late to the screen, making her film debut aged 29 in Lars von Trier’s 1996 drama Breaking the Waves (when Helena Bonham Carter pulled out at the last minute). She won an Oscar nomination for that film and was nominated again two years later...

BBC One controller Charlotte Moore has revealed details of a number of new programmes heading to the channel.
Speaking at the Edinburgh Television Festival, Moore revealed that she had commissioned several shows to broaden BBC One's drama, factual and documentary offerings.
The first of these, The Living And The Dead, is a new six-part fantasy drama from the creators of Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes. It begins shooting next year and, according to Moore, is "steeped in real history and mythology that will scare the audience and awaken the dead".
Set in Somerset in 1888, the hour-long episodes will follow the story of Nathan Appleby, a farmer who has made it his mission to prove the existence of an afterlife. Emily Watson's raw performances have made her one of Britain's most spellbinding actors. Now she's playing a woman running for prime minister – against her husband. She talks to Carole Cadwalladr about marriage, sexuality and the joy of viscose blouses
The plots of TV dramas are often so preposterous and far-fetched. And then sometimes they're not. The latest three-parter from the BBC, The Politician's Husband, stars David Tennant and Emily Watson as two senior politicians who are married to one another and whose domestic life starts to unravel when the husband's career begins to be eclipsed by that of his more talented wife. If this is a fantasy (and none too flattering) version of Ed Balls and Yvette Cooper's lives, then at least they can be happy with the cast.
It's a mark of how much the star of TV drama has risen that an actor of Emily Watson's stature is involved.

Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall has penned new two-part TV film The Great Train Robbery for BBC One.
The first film will star Fast & Furious 6 actor Luke Evans as Bruce Reynolds, the mastermind behind the famous heist.
Reynolds passed away last week at the age of 81, just months before the 50th anniversary of his audacious crime.
Chibnall's new drama will tell the story of how the robbery was inspired, planned, rehearsed and executed, with Reynolds and his team targeting the August Bank Holiday 1963 mail train from Glasgow.
Jack Roth (Bedlam) will play Reynolds's childhood friend Charlie Wilson, with Utopia's Neil Maskell cast as ambitious Ronald 'Buster' Edwards and The Sweeney's Paul Anderson set to play professional Gordon Goody.
Martin Compston (Line of Duty), Del Synnott (The Silence) and Jack Gordon (Panic Button) will also star in the film, directed by Julian Jarrold (The Girl, Appropriate Adult).

David Tennant and Olivia Colman's brilliant Broadchurch premiered on ITV last night (March 4) amid a flurry of hype and lofty comparisons with the Godfather of Nordic Noir, The Killing.
Thankfully, the opening episode more than matched the hype, managing to create a gripping whodunnit balanced alongside an emotionally powerful tale of parental grief. There are still eight episodes to go and a crime drama can be made or broken by its resolutions, but in my opinion this first hour was ITV's best piece of drama since 2011's Appropriate Adult. I'm utterly hooked.
Every week, I'll be collecting up the clues and examining the latest twists from the seaside town of Broadchurch to discover the culprit behind the murder of 11-year-old Danny Latimer. In last night's opening instalment, Danny was found on the beach and his death is now being investigated by Di Alec Hardy (Tennant) and DS Ellie Miller (Colman).

British independent production company Boom Pictures will back Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes’ new drama shingle, which is to be called MainStreet Pictures. The ITV executives, who are responsible for getting Downton Abbey on the air, announced last week that they were leaving the network to set up their own indie. MainStreet will launch in July as part of the Boom Pictures stable of companies which also includes TV producers Boomerang, Apollo and Delightful Industries, post-production outfit Gorilla, talent agency Harlequin and documentary producer Indus Films. Former BBC One controller Lorraine Heggessey is Boom’s executive chair with whom Mackie and Haynes worked at the BBC prior to their seven-year run at ITV. Most recently at ITV, the duo commissioned series Appropriate Adult, Mr Selfridge and Broadchurch, which was acquired by BBC America earlier this month. MainStreet will operate from Boom’s London offices.

The ITV drama chiefs responsible for bringing Downton Abbey to the network are leaving the estate. Director of drama Laura Mackie and controller of drama Sally Haynes will exit the broadcaster at the end of June to launch their own production company. Steve November, who’s currently head of drama series, will take over as interim acting director of drama. Mackie and Haynes, who worked together at the BBC before moving to ITV in 2006, helped the company boost its period drama fortunes with ratings hit Downton and recently launched Jeremy Piven-starrer Mr Selfridge. Their other credits include Vera, Lost In Austen, Dci Banks, Marchlands and Appropriate Adult. ITV director of television Peter Fincham said today, “Laura and Sally have had a tremendous run at ITV and their legacy is an incredibly strong drama slate for 2013 and beyond. Having already scored with its two scripted ventures -- Carlos and Appropriate Adult -- Sundance Channel keeps its streak going with Restless, a superb two-part miniseries about British spies in the early 1940s before America's entry into World War II. With an excellent cast and a stirring story (it frays a bit near the end, though not enough to do any damage), Restless is based on the book by British novelist William Boyd (who also wrote the teleplay) and has enough intrigue, deceit, twists and lingering suspicions to lure you into its web. Meanwhile, the channel is preparing its 2013-14 lineup. “These projects tell dynamic and visceral emotional stories that draw on the best characteristics of our independent film roots, namely new kinds of narratives that surprise you and unapologetically raw characters who feel unlike anything you’ve ever seen before,” Sarah Barnett,...

Dominic West's family tried to persuade him not to take his BAFTA-winning role: "His family tried to talk him out of it. After all, who would want a loved one to get inside the head of Britain’s most notorious serial killer? 'They were appalled,' admits the 42-year-old star of 'Appropriate Adult,' ITV’s two-part drama about Fred West. 'My sisters and my wife all thought it was a terrible idea and they didn’t want me to do it.' They weren’t alone. 'There was definitely a sense in all the papers that it was a subject not to be tackled,' he adds. 'But I think it’s the role of drama to show these things, while being mindful of the immense suffering of the victims. In the end, I think we took a very difficult subject and handled it with respect and sensitivity.

McNulty on "Game of Thrones"? It almost happened, according to actor Dominic West.
On Wednesday, I interviewed West, who played the iconic cop Jimmy McNulty on "The Wire," about the second season of the period drama "The Hour," in which he plays newscaster Hector Madden. I asked what other kinds of roles he was interested in, and "Game of Thrones" came up in the conversation.
"I was offered something on 'Game of Thrones' and unfortunately, I hadn't seen it, but my nephew and his father said, 'Gosh, "Game of Thrones" is the only great show on!' And I felt terrible, because I'd just turned them down," West said.
So what part was West offered? He hasn't read the books, so the name didn't stick in his head. But he did say that taking the role -- a substantial one and similar in stature or importance to Sean Bean...

Chicago – The 64th Annual Emmy Nominations will be announced this Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 7:40Am Cst by Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”) and Kerry Washington (“Scandal”). We’ve already made clear what should be nominated in this feature but what will be nominated?
There are a few interesting stories to watch this year and some big question marks (with my guesses in parentheses). Will “Glee” be shown the door after a down season? (Yes.) Will “Girls” break into a boy’s club? (No.) Will all six “Modern Family” adult actors be nominated again? (Yep.) Which drama will be the snub with seven strong candidates for the big category? Playing troubled Lol in This is England won Vicky McClure a Bafta and a raft of new roles. Here she talks about the 'psychological nightmare' of working with director Shane Meadows
In an east London pub, Vicky McClure is reeling off a list of her recent roles. There's True Love, an entirely improvised TV drama directed by Dominic Savage, in which she co-stars with David Tennant. There's a big-budget Tom Stoppard adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, with Keira Knightley in the title role. McClure plays a nun called Serafina who has a brief affair with Domhnall Gleeson's Levin: "not a one-night stand, because it's a bloody period drama, but that kind of thing". There's Svengali, based on an internet viral about the music business, and, perhaps most improbably, the latest Jason Statham vehicle, Hummingbird, in which Great Yarmouth's leading action hero hunts down the killers of his former lover.
