Exclusive Trailer for Vengeance Is Mine Heralds the Return of Michael Roemer’s Long-Unseen Melodrama
A few years after her incredible 1978, featuring Days of Heaven and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Brooke Adams starred in Michael Roemer’s Vengeance Is Mine (which premiered under the title of Haunted as part of the PBS anthology series American Playhouse). The 1984 feature, which has long gone unseen since its debut, is now returning in a new 35mm print at Film Forum beginning on May 27 and we’re pleased to exclusively debut the trailer. First, see the official synopsis.
Returning to her East Coast childhood home to heal old familial wounds, Jo (Adams), finds her adoptive mother withdrawn and distant, and a half-sister who has successfully escaped the cold clutches of their family. Impulsively, Jo enters into the troubled life of the neighbors, befriending a couple whose marriage is collapsing under the weight of alcoholism and mental illness.

In the latest TV show ratings, ABC’s Shark Tank and Fox’s SmackDown tied for the nightly demo win, while CBS’ Blue Bloods copped Friday’s largest audience.
Shark Tank this week drew 3.9 million total viewers and a 0.6 demo rating, holding steady week-to-week, while Friday Night SmackDown (2.1 mil/0.6) did same.

ABC’s 20/20 won the Friday night demo wars with a huge 1.0, as the newsmag and interviewer Diane Sawyer profiled the “House of Horror” story of the Turpin family, whose 12 children suffered unimaginable torture and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents. The show was seen by more than 7 million viewers.
Earlier, there was nothing abstract about the big winner on the network’s Shark Tank on Friday. A paint-by-numbers company called “Pink Picasso” closed a $400k deal after a four-Shark bidding war. The drama of those negotiations raised Shark Tank to an 0.6 on the night.
Fox’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown emanated from Hartford, Connecticut, as the Uso family revved up the excitement for a Sunday Survivor Series PPV event. The action brought in an 0.5.
NBC game show The Wall dropped a bit from last week, coming in at an 0.3, which was also the demo score for trailing newsmag Dateline.

“Do you like scary movies?” A trailer for the fifth installment of Paramount’s “Scream” franchise has arrived, promising a new, bloody adventure with the beloved characters.
Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers and David Arquette’s Deputy Dewey Riley are back for the bloody slasher, along with a new cast of characters, many of which will probably not make it to the end credits with a new Ghostface killer on the loose. The trailer opens with a scene mirroring Drew Barrymore’s iconic opening to 1996’s “Scream,” but this time Ghostface texts newcomer Tara (Jenna Ortega) before disabling the alarm system, breaking into her house and presumably murdering her.
The original characters explain to the traumatized newbies that Ghostface always targets people related to the Og cast. Sidney prepares for another bloody showdown with the killer, saying “I’ve been through this…a lot.”

Oh. Golly. Here is the official trailer for Neill Blomkamp's deep dive into horror, his new film Demonic. From the director of District 9 and Elysium, a young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades old rift between mother and daughter are revealed. The less we say the better but, nice! Carly Pope's character looks to be virtually descending into her mother's subconcious, for reasons unknown for now, and making contact with the demons in question. Whatever is going on in her mother's head then makes it out into the physical realm and then we cue the horror. Cannot wait to see this. Demonic will be in cinemas, On Demand and on digital on August...

If you scratched your head at the idea of Neill Blomkamp directing what looked like a straight-up horror movie, you were not alone. As it turns out we had nothing to worry about because Blomkamp's next project is anything but typical.
Demonic stars Canadian actor Carly Pope as woman dealing with some difficulties with her mother and using what appears to be some sort of VR technology to overcome that rift except in doing so, the lines between the VR world and the real-world begin to blend together.
The trailer is still a bit vague on the details but it does provide a bit more to go on than the images that were previously released.

Neill Blomkamp is back, with the “District 9” director’s first feature film since 2015’s “Chappie.” And his latest movie “Demonic” looks like a creepy head trip that will make you question your reality.
The first teaser for “Demonic” dropped on Thursday, and the film shows a woman donning elaborate head gear that sends her into an unusual alternate dimension — or perhaps some kind of virtual reality — where instead of being wholly there, she appears all pixelated and even inverted.
There’s not too many other plot details to be found here, but Blomkamp’s film is described as a horror movie in which a young woman unleashes terrifying demons and supernatural forces when a decades-old rift with her mother is revealed.

After following up District 9 will the large-scale sci-fi tentpole Elysium, Neill Blomkamp slightly lessened his scope with Chappie. Now, for his next feature, he made the best of the restrictions of the pandemic to film a down-and-dirty horror film in British Columbia, Canada. Ahead of an August 20 release from IFC Midnight, the first trailer for Demonic has now arrived.
Starring Carly Pope, Chris William Martin, and Nathalie Boltt, the film follows a young woman who unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother and daughter are revealed. IFC Midnight has revealed the first teaser trailer for a new horror film titled Demonic, made by sci-fi filmmaker Neill Blomkamp branching into horror. He made this film quietly last year, taking friends and a small crew up into the Canadian forest during the pandemic summer. It’s been a somewhat tough decade for writer-director Neill Blomkamp. Since his box-office hit feature debut “District 9” garnered four Oscar nominations in 2009, the South African-Canadian sci-fi auteur has released two major films to diminishing critical and commercial returns: 2013’s “Elysium” (a mega-budgeted misfire by the director’s own admission) and 2015’s “Chappie” (which flopped despite a stellar cast and lighter tone). Perhaps even more significant are the films Blompkamp ended up not making: he’s been hired and fired from shelved sequels to both “Alien” and “RoboCop,” two of the most beloved franchises in modern movies. If either of those projects came together, his cultural footprint might more closely resemble a Ridley Scott or James Cameron. However, notwithstanding a devoted cult following, Blomkamp’s career hasn’t quite delivered on the promise of his early success.

Neill Blomkamp hasn’t released a directorial feature in the six years since “Chappie” flopped with film critics. The negative press around “Chappie” was a far cry from Blomkamp’s 2009 feature directorial debut “District 9,” a critical sensation that grossed $210 million worldwide and earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for Neill Blomkamp and co-writer Terri Tatchell. The Oscar nominee went on to helm “Elysium” and “Chappie,” but neither could match the critical highs of his debut. Now comes “Demonic,” a smaller scale Blomkamp effort made during the pandemic and starring Carly Pope, Chris William Martin, and Michael Rogers.

What did you do during the pandemic? If you’re a filmmaker with horror tendencies, you made a lo-fi horror film, it seems. That’s what Ben Wheatley did with “In The Earth,” same with filmmaking duo Nick Simon and writer/actor Luke Baine (“The Girl in the Photographs“), and it’s also what “District 9” and “Chappie” director Neill Blomkamp did too with his “free time.” The result is “Demonic,” a horror-thriller about unleashing demons and supernatural forces between family members.

Indie Film Temperature Check: Vaccines Roll Out And Production Revs Up But Insurers, Banks Still Mia
With more than 50% of the U.S. adult population at least half vaccinated and studios plotting start dates, visions of a return to normalcy abound. So what’s the prognosis for independent film, when insurers and bank lenders remain on the sidelines even as production perks up?
Mark Gill, CEO of Solstice Studios, said things are looking up and he’s hoping to stick to a September shooting date for Hypnotic, the Robert Rodriquez thriller with Ben Affleck. But right now, “You have trouble financing any size of movie except the small ones.”
“Mostly what we do is [in the range of] $40 million to $80 million that made it impossible for us to go into production. I had hoped it would ease up.”
“As soon as the insurance is workable, it all snaps back,” Gill added, referring to Covid-19 insurance, which disappeared for new independent productions over a year ago. Specialty insurance is available but...

Back in December we were all quite surprised to find out that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp secretly filmed a supernatural horror flick called Demonic during the Summer of 2020. Today, IFC Midnight have announced that they have secured the U.S. rights for Demonic and are planning on releasing it on August 20th. In Demonic, a young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades old rift between mother and daughter are ruthlessly revealed in this horror-thriller from director Neill Blomkamp. Demonic went to EFM and sold like hotcakes. Here in Canada Vvs picked it up and haven't said boo about it. You can look in the press release below and see if Demonic was picked up...

We're very excited to see the next film from Neill Blomkamp and there won't be too long of a wait, as IFC Midnight has acquired Demonic, with plans to release the movie on August 20th:
"IFC Midnight and AGC Studios announced today that IFC Midnight is acquiring U.S. rights to Demonic, written and directed by Neill Blomkamp, from AGC Studios. Blomkamp first earned critical acclaim across the board for his debut feature and sci-fi allegory on immigration District 9 before going on to further success with such films as Elysium and Chappie. Demonic was co-financed and co-produced by AGC Studios and STABILITi Studios last summer and marks Blomkamp’s fourth film. Joining Blomkamp is Oats Studios collaborator, editor Austyn Daines. The film stars up-and-comers Carly Pope (Elysium), Chris William Martin, and Michael Rogers. Neill Blomkamp, Mike Blomkamp of STABILITi Studios, Stuart Ford and Linda McDonough of AGC Studios are on board as producers.

IFC Midnight said Wednesday that it is acquiring U.S. rights to Neill Blomkamp’s new film Demonic, a horror thriller starring Elysium‘s Carly Pope, Chris William Martin and Michael Rogers. The pic, co-produced and co-financed by AGC Studios and Stabiliti Studios and which was selling international rights during last month’s European Film Market, will now be released on August 20, 2021.
The backstory to the pic, written and directed by the District 9 and Elysium helmer in his first movie since 2015’s Chappie, is interesting: Deadline scooped a couple months ago that he shot it under the radar in British Columbia over the summer during the pandemic, after he had to pause on moving forward with the AGC-backed Taylor Kitsch action thriller The Inferno because of the Covid shutdown.

Once seen as niche or nerdy, science fiction, fantasy and horror fare have moved into a dominant position on the film and TV landscape. Platforms are starving for it, theaters can fill up when it’s playing and producers are always on the lookout for opportunities to back the right project.
“Genre filmmaking presents a climate of opportunity for producers,” says AGC Studios chairman and CEO Stuart Ford. “Genre movies can often be produced on more modest budgets and are not as reliant on big name acting talent,” he explained, citing Neill Blomkamp’s “Demonic,” which AGC Studios screened just before the EFM.
“We weren’t able to make ‘Inferno’ last year, which was much a bigger budgeted, ambitious in scale sci-fi thriller we’d been prepping with Neill. So instead, we pivoted to shooting ‘Demonic,’ a sub-$10 million supernatural thriller, set and shot in British Columbia.”

Ryan Gosling, Shailene Woodley, Milla Jovovich and Catherine Deneuve headline new movie projects at a 2021 Berlin market that looks set, however, to deliver a slimmed down version of prior editions.
It could hardly be otherwise. The collateral damage from Covid-19 — theater shutdowns, release logjams and pushed-back production schedules — is still taking its toll on the international business.
“My sense is that there are relatively few packages of substance launching in this market, although there’s expected to be a little flurry of launch activity over the next few days,” says AGC Studios’ Stuart Ford.
But a clutch of higher-rollers, or at least high-profile titles, will still hit the market.
In the European Film Market’s biggest swing, FilmNation has announced “In Lost Lands,” re-teaming “Resident Evil” star Milla Jovovich and helmer Paul W.S. Anderson, from a story by “Game of Thrones” novelist George R.R. Martin.

Neill Blomkamp’s District 10 Moves Forward as First Details Arrive for His Pandemic-Shot Horror Film
Bursting onto the scene in 2009 with his Best Picture-nominated District 9, Neill Blomkamp’s follow-ups Elysium and Chappie didn’t quite ignite the same response but the South African-Canadian director is plotting his return. After developing Alien and RoboCop films that never saw the light of day, he’s now shot a supernatural horror film during the pandemic and is returning to the world of his breakout film.
First up, details were spare when his pandemic-shot project was initially announced last year, but thanks to a tip from a reader who received a test screening invitation we have an idea of the plot. Revealing the cast features Carly Pope, Chris William Martin, and Michael Rogers, the test screening invite used the name Unlocked, but ScreenDaily has reported the new title is Demonic. Check out the plot below for the film that will likely be rated R:

Covid Clause Controversy
Clause for thought: It’s widely accepted that freelancers were among those hit hardest by production shutdowns last year. In that context, the return to work has been welcome, but for many, they still feel like they are being exposed to unfair financial risk in the stop-start world of filming during a pandemic. That’s the view of some contract workers who spoke to us this week, as we revealed that Fremantle-owned Too Hot To Handle producer Thames is among a swathe of UK production companies inserting...

“District 9” and “Elysium” director Neill Blomkamp has revealed that he and writing partners Sharlto Copley and Terri Tatchell are in the process of writing the screenplay for “District 10,” the long-awaited follow-up to South Africa’s biggest box office hit.
“District 10 screenplay also being written by @sharlto (Sharlto Copley) @territachell (Terri Tatchell) and I. It’s [sic] coming…” said Blomkamp in a tweet on Friday.

In 2009, “District 9,” produced by TriStar Pictures, Block/Hanson and WingNut Films, grossed $211 million worldwide, the largest-ever sum for a South African film. It received four Academy Award nominations, including best picture and original screenplay for Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell. Rumors have swirled ever since about the possibility of a sequel, and the film’s ambiguous final act seemed to imply there is more story to be told.

”At AGC we’re cognisant that we are one of the cornerstone suppliers to the international marketplace.”
AGC Studios will screen its newly titled Neill Blomkamp supernatural thriller Demonic and Jackie Collins documentary Lady Boss to worldwide buyers at the upcoming EFM.
Demonic shot in secret in British Columbia last summer and features an up-and-coming cast.
AGC Studios fully financed the project, which Screen was the first to report last autumn. AGC head Stuart Ford was keeping mum about plot details although he did say, “Typically for Neill’s films it has a highly original visual component as well as some great scares.
