District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is back with Oats Studios. He explains what we can expect, and how you can get involved...
From the earliest stages of his career, director Neill Blomkamp has used short films as a means of testing his ideas. The most famous example, arguably, is Alive In Joburg, a fake documentary about shunned alien visitors - a premise which formed the debut for Blomkamp's stunning feature debut, District 9.

The success of that film led to the movies Elysium and Chappie, yet Blomkamp hasn't stopped making short films and commercials in between; there was the curious snippet of found-footage released by Wired Magazine in 2010, which depicted the discovery of a strange, porcine creature lying dead in a puddle. There was The Hire, one instalment of a series of shorts for the German car firm BMW.

How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

Look at this: From the writer/director of District 9. Wickus. Ripley. Slumdog. Die Antwoord. Wolverine with a mullet. Ed-209 meeRobocop 2. How Is This Movie Not Going To Be Amazing?
My mom saw a TV spot for Chappie and asked me what I knew about it. I told her to think of it as Short Circuit for adults. In reality that’s not too far off, but director Neill Blomkamp’s three feature films have all been a sum of their parts from genre films of the past. He’s claimed James Cameron’s Aliens as his favorite film, and is close with Peter Jackson who also knows a lot about splatter gore and epic scale. Chappie has major influence from the first two Robocop films, both Short Circuit films, and The Fifth Element among others. I remember right after seeing District 9 that Blomkamp was going to be the successor to Paul Verhoeven,...

Hugh Jackman in a mullet, thieving rabbit-eared robots and explosions - Ryan explains why you should watch Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie...
If the formative years as a human are tough, spare a thought for Chappie, the bunny-eared title robot in director and co-writer Neill Blomkamp’s latest film. Raised in a wasteland by a pair of surrogate gangster parents, his impossibly difficult, traumatic childhood is compressed into a single week.
Created by computer genius Deon (Dev Patel), Chappie begins life as one of an army of servile police droids patrolling the mean streets of Johannesburg. Severely damaged after a gun battle, Chappie’s written off as scrap by the military tech company that owns him, Tetra Vaal. But Deon, privately working on a cutting-edge AI program in his spare time, injects his experimental routine (“consciousness.dat") into Chappie’s brain - and thus, the first sentient robot is born.

A morally muddled mess that is convoluted in plot and appallingly simplistic in its themes. I am a sad geek today. I’m “biast” (pro): I’ve been a fan of Neill Blomkamp’s films
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
If a mashup of 80s robot flicks Short Circuit and RoboCop sounds like a bad joke, well: almost. Chappie is often risible, but it’s more sad than anything else. Not the good kind of sad: this is not a poignant or touching film, though it clearly hopes to be. No, Chappie makes me sad because the promise that South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp displayed with his brilliant District 9 and which hung over his flawed but still daring followup Elysium is nowhere to be found here. Chappie is a morally muddled mess that is convoluted in plot and appallingly simplistic in its themes.

Writer/director Neill Blomkamp has recently expressed some dismay about the final cut of his sophomore film, Elysium. With a large budget and audacious concept, that sci-fi film with a social conscience had a lot of potential, yet it only had scattered moments of brilliance. Blomkamp is certainly a filmmaker with ideas about placing sleek sci-fi stories into a crude, graffiti-strewn Johannesburg and watching how grit and genre can come together. However, the mesh between his humanist sci-fi allegories and high-octane action has always been inconsistent, dating back to his striking 2009 debut, District 9.
Chappie, his latest film, is yet another instance of a filmmaker thriving for the same ideals but coming up short. The genre here is not as much science fiction as it is cautionary 80s cinema that’s meant to prophesize the future schism between people and robotic prototypes. Blomkamp has admitted to being a fan of...

New York - Since bursting onto the international scene in "X-Men" 15 years ago, Hugh Jackman has almost always played the hero. It appears 2015 will be the one year where he goes against type. This summer he'll bring Blackbeard the Pirate to life in Joe Wright's "Pan," but first he makes Dev Patel's life hellish in Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie" which opens on Friday. Set in the near future, "Chappie" is the name of the world's first sentient robot. Chappie is also the creation of Deon Wilson (Patel), the top robotics scientist at Tetra Vaal, a company contracted to provide non-sentient security bots to the Johannesburg, South Africa police force. Vincent Moore (Jackman) is a former soldier turned robot designer who has come up with a much more aggressive option called "Moose" (think of a "Robocop" inspired drone with 10 times more firepower). Over the course of the film, Moore's...

New York - Sigourney Weaver's long and illustrious career has allowed her the opportunity to work with some of the greatest directors of all-time. Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher, Ang Lee, Roman Polanski, Mike Nichols and Peter Weir, just to name a few. A number of those filmmakers have excelled in breaking down the conventions of science fiction in a number of modern day classics she's been lucky to be a part of (or, perhaps they were lucky to have her?) As Weaver notes, "it's a pretty short list" and therefore surprise then that she chose to appear in Neill Blomkamp's latest endeavor, "Chappie." "I must say, once I saw 'District 9' I thought, 'God, I'd love to work with this guy.' To see a science fiction film that was set in the future, an amazing future, but also dealt with so many immediate...

As director Neill Blomkamp is wont to do, details about Chappie have been scarce up until now. However, with the film fast approaching we are starting to see a flurry of trailers and articles with fresh insights. In addition to the new UK trailer below (via Yahoo), which stresses emotion over action and sheds further light on the film's protagonists (and Hugh Jackman's inner asshole), an article has appeared over at Hero Complex with some new interesting tidbits. Blomkamp apparently wrote the script in just two weeks, after striking upon an idea for the film during the making of Elysium. Chappie, like District 9, is based on one of Blomkamp's short films, Tetra Vaal, which you can see here. Interestingly, similarities to Short Circuit not withstanding, he reveals that...

From low-budget dystopias to grungy horror, here are 12 shorts that became films such as Evil Dead, Twelve Monkeys and The Babadook.
The best story ideas are often the simple and pure ones. It's little wonder, then, that so many filmmakers and storytellers start by making short films - after all, if you can tell a good story in just a few minutes, you might be talented enough to make a feature.
Cinema history is full of stories about young filmmakers getting their start by making low-budget shorts. James Cameron famously made Xenogenesis, a sci-fi short which contained lots of things that would appear in his later feature films: a giant robot with big tank tracks, a cyborg, and a heroine at the helm of a hard-hitting mecha.

District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp is keeping the details surrounding his new film Chappie pretty close to the vest. All we really know so far is that Die Antwoord is involved, and that it’s basically a comedy about a ridiculous robot. The filmmaker has offered up one more piece of the puzzle this week, revealing that his short film Tetra Vaal served as a key inspiration for the new feature. Blomkamp offered up this hint in a recent Den of Geek interview, saying that Chappie is “basically based on Tetra Vaal.” So, what is Tetra Vaal? It’s a short Blomkamp made before Alive in Joburg (which was the inspiration for District 9) that looks like a promo video for a line of robotic cops to police third world countries. Like Blomkamp’s other...

The Chappie trailer gave us a first look at the new film from the director of District 9 and Elysium. But what's beneath its 80s nostalgia.
From his earliest, eye-catching short films, South African director Neill Blomkamp showed off a style that already seemed fully-formed. As much inspired by manga and videogames as the more typical touchstones of science fiction cinema, Blomkamp's films are set in a recognisably grubby future, where the high-tech meets the tatty malaise of cities worn down through decades of use.
Those sensational short films, among them Alive In Joburg, Yellow and Tetra Vaal, led to a stalled Halo feature film project. This in turn led to his first feature, the surprise hit District 9 - based on Alive In Joburg - and then Elysium, the 2013 action film starring Matt Damon.
In Chappie, due out next spring, Blomkamp again draws on one of his early shorts...

As promised, we’ve been treated with our first look at Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie today, which brings us up close and personal with the titular robotic stowaway.
Fans of the South African filmmaker will no doubt recognise some of the stylistic influences from the director’s previous work; particularly in regard to District 9, as the naive-yet-brilliant character of Chappie bears some semblance to the extra-terrestrial Christopher Johnson. Still, Blomkamp’s latest has been described as a sci-fi comedy, and while the recently-released footage has a very action-oriented, Messiah-like slant, we understand the film will indeed be a significant departure from Elysium and District 9 — Sharlto Copley’s involvement notwithstanding.
At its core, the feature film (which is based loosely on Blomkamp’s 2003 short, Tetra Vaal) will chart the adventures of the title AI who is kidnapped by gangsters at a young age and subsequently raised by a dysfunctional family.

Next year sees the release of Chappie, the next film from the director of District 9 and Elysium. Here's the first trailer and poster...
Well, this is delightful. We've known for some time that Neill Blomkamp, having directed District 9 and Elysium, is set to direct a film called Chappie, an expansion of his 2003 short,Tetra Vaal. The story appears to have a blackly comic tone to it: Chappie is a childlike robot kidnapped by a family of career criminals, and ends up accompanying them on their law-breaking exploits.
Blomkamp's regular collaborator Sharlto Copley will play Chappie (he'll be performance captured, Andy Serkis-style), and he'll be joined by an eclectic cast which includes Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, Sigourney Weaver, and two members of South African rap outfit Die Antwoord - Ninja and Yolandi Visser.
The first poster gives an idea of the film's quirky tone, and a proper look at Copley's innocent robot.

Next year’s full to bursting with potentially brilliant geek films, so to help, here’s our pick of 25 must-see movies out in 2015…
Compiling a list of next year's most exciting films is extremely difficult. What do you put in? What do you leave out? Those are some of the questions we've had to ask ourselves as we drew up the long-list of our most anticipated films of 2015. In an attempt to limit the number of sequels which can fill up a list such as this, we've left out something like Fast & Furious 7, even though we're fairly sure it'll be a lot of fun. With but two significant exceptions, we've excluded some of the films we were looking forward to this year that have been delayed until the next, such as Kingsman: The Secret Service and Frankenstein.
What we're left with, we hope, is a fairly broad selection of action and comedy,...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sigourney Weaver will join Hugh Jackman in Neill Blomkamp's currently shooting sci-fi movie, in which Sharlto Copley will play the title role of Chappie. The District 9 actor will play (via motion capture) a law enforcement robot who is stolen and reprogrammed by a couple of gangsters played by Ninja and Yolandi Visser of Die Antwoord. The Newsroom's Dev Patel will also star. THR don't reval what role Weaver will play, but they do provide an official logline for the movie: "After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot." Chappie is a partnership between Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital, and is based on Blomkamp's short film Tetra Vaal, which you can see below.

Making Elysium, writer/director Neill Blomkamp cast Matt Damon in his first live-action science-fiction role, but for the filmmaker's next project he is turning to not only a sci-fi pro, but a sci-fi legend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Blomkamp's Chappie has just added Ellen Ripley herself, Sigourney Weaver to the cast, the actress joining an ensemble that includes Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel and Sharlto Copley. The film is based on a short film called Tetra Vaal that Blomkamp directed prior to breaking out with District 9 back in 2009, and he co-wrte the script with Terri Tatchell. Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie has been characterized as a return to the District 9 director’s indie roots in the wake of Elysium, what with it once again starring Sharlto Copley in the lead, drawing inspiration from an old short he made (Tetra Vaal), and not having expensive movie stars. Or, at least, not a surfeit of expensive movie stars, now that it’s been confirmed that Hugh Jackman is also on board. What we know about Chappie, the new film from District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp, is pretty scant so far: It’s “based on a short Blomkamp made titled Tetra Vaal, a fake ad for a robotic police force patrolling the slums of South Africa," Dev Patel will play a man living in one of the slums, and South African District 9 star Sharlto Copley is set to appear as a "ridiculous robot character." Now we have another key detail: Hugh Jackman has just joined the cast “to play the rival of Patel’s character.” Luckily, he has some experience with ridiculous robots.

Chappie is a movie that Neill Blomkamp and his fans have been talking about for a long time. From early on it was rumoured to be based on his short film Tetra Vaal. When that was recently confirmed, fans got really excited, and rightfully so. With Blomkamp’s frequent collaborator Sharlto Copley voicing the robot and some other interesting cast members signed on, Chappie is already shaping up to be a great sci-fi comedy. Now, the film has added another excellent cast member in Hugh Jackman.

Sony Pictures has set a release date for Neill Blomkamp's project, Chappie, and that date is March 27th, 2015.
The film is a sci-fi comedy inspired by Blomkamp's short film "Tetra Vaal," and it tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.
The movie stars Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium) as well as Die Antwoord rap-rave duo Ninja and Yolandi Visser.
I'm a fan of Blomkamp's work; I even enjoyed Elysium, even though it could have been better. I'm looking forward to what becomes of Chappie.

Chappie is set to reunite director Neill Blomkamp and star Sharlto Copley. And it now has a release date...
We broke the news that District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp was to make Chappie his next movie a month or two back, and since then, things have been gathering pace somewhat. The project has since been officially announced, with Sony Pictures backing it (as it has Blomkamp's previous two films), and the movie now has a release date too. It's been revealed that Chappie will be in cinemas on March 27th 2015.
The film, based on Blomkamp's 2003 short Tetra Vaal - more on that here - tells the story of a robot with artificial intelligence on board, who's stolen by gangsters to use for their not very legal plans.
More on the film as we get it. Blomkamp's two for two as far as we're concerned,...

According to the press release, the film tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.
It was also confirmed that the film will also star Ninja and Yolandi Visser of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord.
Before today, all we knew was that the movie would be more of a comedy, and that it was inspired by Blomkamp's short film, Tetra Vaal. The director previously described the script he wrote saying that it's "laugh-out-loud funny but also emotional," then adding, “It’s fairly touching, but, you know,...

South African director's next film to feature talking robot, based on one of his own early shorts
Hard on the heels of the successful opening weekend of his latest film Elysium, South African director Neill Blomkamp has announced more details of his next project: a robot film called Chappie.
Chappie is about a robot who is stolen by gangsters, and will apparently be based on Blomkamp's 2003 short Tetra Vaal. It has been confirmed that Blomkamp's regular collaborator, District 9's Sharlto Copley, will voice Chappie, while Die Antwoord rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser will play the gangsters. Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel is understood to be in talks for another role.
There is no word yet as to whether Chappie will be set in Blomkamp's home turf, South Africa, but with a title like that it's difficult to see how it can't be.

After a burst of grim dystopia and shiny, hollow utopia in Elysium, Neill Blomkamp will be lightening up for his next film, Chappie. In development since before Elysium even happened along, it now has the backing of Sony (clearly happy to be back in business with the writer-director despite Elysium opening to a decent but hardly outstanding first weekend in the Us) and Media Rights Capital.Loosely adapted from his short Tetra Vaal (see below) by Blomkamp and his wife Terri Tatchell (who the director admits likes writing a lot more than he does), Chappie chronicles what happens when two gangsters steal an artificially-intelligent robot and tinker with his brains to their own criminal ends. We doubt the results will be quite as gentle as last year's Robot & Frank, however.Blomkamp’s regular collaborator Sharlto Copley is on to voice the ‘bot with Ninja and Yolandi Visser, better known as rap-ravers Die Antwoord,...

As Elysium emerges worldwide, new story details emerge for Neill Blomkamp's next film, Chappie...
As we revealed a few weeks ago, District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp's next film Chappie will be based on his early short film, Tetra Vaal. If you haven't seen it before, it was about a rabbit-eared police robot on patrol in a run-down South African city.
We know that Sharlto Copley will be appearing as the title robot, and he'll be joined by Dev Patel and rap musicians Ninja and Yolandi Visser. The Hollywood Reporter has recently revealed that Chappie has found financial backing from Sony and Mrc, who bankrolled Elysium.
The bit that caught our eye, however, was a snippet of new information about what the story's about - after all, the original short film's a slight affair, and we've been wondering how Blomkamp and...

Exciting day for science fiction geeks! In addition to a new synopsis for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, Sony has followed up and confirmed a new plot synopsis for Neill Blomkamp's Chappie. After Blomkamp's Elysium opened #1 at the box office this past weekend, Sony has put out a press release announcing they're partnering with Media Rights Capital to co-produce, co-finance and distribute his next film Chappie, which will star Sharlto Copley (as reported before). In the press release is an actual one-line synopsis for the sci-fi comedy, explaining that Copley will be voicing a robot (seen above from the short Tetra Vaal) that is stolen. Here is the portion of the Sony press release which contains the new Chappie plot info and casting details: Chappie tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.

This is another edition of Short Starts, where we present a weekly short film(s) from the start of a filmmaker or actor’s career. Years from now (let’s say 2154), Neill Blomkamp’s significance in film history books will be that he was discovered through his short films. Specifically by Peter Jackson. And for a while he became a sort of poster boy for the situation where a young talented and economical filmmaker catches Hollywood’s eyes with a remarkable short film showcasing computer-generated special effects that make it look like it cost a million bucks. He will also be known for being part of the related trend of a new filmmaker turning his calling-card-functioning short into a debut feature. And as it turns out, another short of his is set to be adapted for his third feature. And another was a test for what was supposed to be his first (the famous failure of the...

"These days we need to be a little... resourceful." Yet another excellent sci-fi short film to feature today. This one featuring another robot! Vancouver based product company Triton Films (behind Somnolence and Blomkamp's Tetra Vaal) has launched their latest short Amp, written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Adam Marisett, an animator on District 9 and many other notable films. This plays almost like a pitch or proof of concept for a Firefly-like futuristic TV show, but it has some flair and I dig the robot character, he fits in well but gets beat up easily. There's some stellar concept art during the end credits, too. Amp comes direct from Vimeo and Triton Films online - no synopsis available. The short film was directed by Adam Marisett, written by Adam Marisett and Casey Chourney, and produced by Gabriel Napora. Cinematography is by Cliff Hokanson, with music by Sean Beeson and Pontus Rufelt.

Ever since Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 earned $211 million worldwide and scored an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, fans have been clamoring for a sequel. There have been some promising signs, including a report from Wired magazine that Blomkamp, 33, has written an 18-page treatment for District 10. But, unfortunately, it may be a long, long time before he gets around to it. Blomkamp begins shooting Chappie, based on his 2004 short film Tetra Vaal, in Johannesburg in September, followed by a micro-budget ribald comedy, Mild Oats. Plus, he’s frankly not in the head space for sequels and franchises just yet. “I...

As previously reported, writer/director Neill Blomkamp will follow the Matt Damon-starring Elysium by heading back to his indie roots with his next release, Chappie. Like District 9, Chappie is based on a previous Blomkamp work—the 2004 (extremely) short Tetra Vaal, a fictional ad for a robotic police force that oversees the slums of his native South Africa—and will feature both District 9’s mock-documentary style and its star Sharlto Copley. Unlike District 9, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it may also star Slumdog Millionnaire’s Dev Patel, currently of The Newsroom, who’s rumored to be in ...

The Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel is reportedly in early talks for the lead in Neill Blomkamp‘s sci-fi comedy Chappie. The British actor could play the human lead opposite Blomkamp’s frequent collaborator, Sharlto Copley, who’s been attached to play a robot for months. Elysium follow-up Chappie is based on a short South African filmmaker made in 2004, entitled Tetra Vaal, a fake advertisement for a robotic police force patrolling the rundown towns while Patel would play a young man living in one of these impoverished places. Blomkamp said of the film last year: It’s like a fundamentally more simple story, a comedy, a heartfelt story,...

Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel might have finally landed another great film project. The actor really hasn't done any movie worth watching since Slumdog. According to THR, he's now in talks to join Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi comedy Chappie, which is based on his short film "Tetra Vaal." All we know about the film's story is that it will center on a "ridiculous robot character."
The movie also stars Sharlto Copley, and according to the report, he is playing a police robot working the shanty towns. If Patel ends up being cast in the film he will play the film’s human lead, "a young man in the impoverished town."
I'm excited to see what exactly Blomkamp has planned for this next movie. All I know is that he's proved himself to be a great filmmaker, and his short film, "Tetra Vaal," is fantastic. It's great that he'll be expending the world he created.

Dev Patel is in early talks to star in Chappie.
The sci-fi will be director Neill Blomkamp's follow-up to Elysium, and is based on a short film he made in 2003 entitled Tetra Vaal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The original short was a fake advertisement for a robotic police force which patrol the slums of South Africa, and Sharlto Copley is already on board to play one of the robotic officers in Chappie.
It is thought that Patel would play the lead role of a young man trapped in an impoverished town.
The script is written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell, while Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class) is producing.
Kinberg also produced Blomkamp's upcoming Elysium, which stars Matt Damon as a man charged with bringing equality to a future world where the rich have emigrated to a luxurious space station and the poor reside on a ruined, diseased Earth.

Neill Blomkamp wowed everyone with his debut District 9, and while his follow up, Elysium, has yet to be released (9 of August in the U.S., the 23rd on this side of the world) , the South African film maker is busy preparing for his next movie, sci-fi comedy Chappie. An extension of Blomkamp's 2004 short film Tetra Vaal (which can be seen below), itself a fake ad for a robotic police, the film will see the director's frequent collaborator Sharlto Copely play one of the aforementioned robots patrolling the slums of South African, no doubt through the wonders of motion capture. Word has reached us that he may be joined by Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel, who is currently in talks to take the human lead role. If he signs on the dotted line, he will play a young man living in the same slums Copely patrols. That's all we know at this stage,...

Former “Slumdog Millionaire’s” Dev Patel is returning to the slums, though this time he’ll be swapping India for South Africa. The actor is currently “in talks” to star in “District 9″ and “Elysium” director Neill Blomkamp’s “Chappie”. The film will be a feature film adaptation of Blomkamp’s short film “Tetra Vaal”, with Patel playing a young man living in an impoverished South African town in the near future, where a robotic police force keeps the peace. Blomkamp’s Bff and “District 9″ and “Elysium” star Sharlto Copley was first cast as one of the robot coppers. Or the voice of one, I guess would be more appropriate, given that the robots of the short film won’t exactly, uh, fit him. “Chappie” is expected to be Blomkamp’s next film after “Elysium” opens later this year. Like “Elysium” and “District 9″ before it, I suspect “Chappie...
