The Orson Welles Story: Part 2
Prismark1026 January 2024
I don't think there was meant to be Part 2 of The Orson Welles Story. However if one of the most difficult and elusive men in show business decides to open up to you. Then you keep the cameras rolling.

In the course of the second part. The film in the camera runs out and Orson and the interviewer Leslie Megahey just keep on talking.

This second part could be called the declining years. Tired of trying to raise money in America. Orson came to Europe to make The Trial with Anthony Bates.

He acted in Moby Dick for John Huston. For other movies it was small parts for the money. Make enough to finance his next picture. Welles did manage a memorable role as Harry Lime in The Third Man.

There were low budget gems such as Chimes at Midnight. Unfinished movies like Don Quixote. Different types of movies such as F for Fake.

Orson laments why he was never offered great parts. He would had sold his soul for the lead in The Godfather. He was reduced to make cameos is mediocre pictures. His name lent some class. He would still turn down roles for moral or political reasons.

Contributor Peter Bogdanovich mentions Orson needed a patron, someone who subsidised his movies. Actress Jeanne Moreau called him a destitute king. There is no kingdom on earth that was good enough to accommodate him.

To Orson movies was his wife and he loved her. He fell out of love with the theatre for the cinema but spent his life trying to raise finances to make movies.

It was fascinating to hear Orson Welles talk about his life. He knew he was nearing the end of his life, he died in 1985. This BBC Arena documentary captured his essence.
