We've been excited about Jay Cheel's How to Build a Time Machine for years (we first posted about the documentary in 2012!) and now we have some excellent news: the doc is finished and ready for consumption!
The long awaited follow up to Beauty Day (review) may have started as an exploration of the John Titor myth but it has grown into something a bit different though just as fascinating. It now follows two men who have dedicated a better part of their lives to different aspects of H.G. Wells' 1895 novel: animator Rob Niosi who has spent nine years r [Continued ...]...

We are big fans of Beauty Day here at Twitch (full disclosure, I contributed to a commentary track on the DVD) and are happy to see documentary filmmaker Jay Cheel back with a sci-fi inflected documentary, How To Build A Time Machine. A couple of years ago, we reported on this project, which was originally focused on the Jon Titor (a self-proclaimed man from the future) story, but the documentary has evolved a fair ways since then, and has locked in on two subjects: Rob Niosi, a man who has been building a time machine replica (from the classic 1960s film The Time Machine) for many, many years, and PhD Physicist and author Ronald Mallett, who has been researching the nuts and bolts (i.e. mathematics)...

Documentary director Jay Cheel has been hard at work on his follow-up to the immensely entertaining Beauty Day (review) for a couple of years. The new documentary How to Build a Time Machine originally had a conspiracy theory element but as is bound to happen as you meet people and conduct interviews, the movie now focuses primarily on two individuals: Rob Niosi, a man who has spent years building a full-scale replica of the prop from the 1960's movie The Time Machine, and Ronald L. Mallett, a physicist who has dedicated his life to researching the real life scientific possibility of time travel.

This October I attended my fourth straight year at the Flyway Film Festival in beautiful Pepin, Wisconsin. It's an intimate, cozy little festival created by festival director (and Pepin resident) Rick Vaicious and run by a team of dedicated volunteers. Last year I was at the festival with Beauty Day and Rick asked if I might be interested in shooting an opening night film specifically for Flyway. Immediately we both knew Reed would be involved as I'd previously screened both Cooking With Gerry and A Very Gerry Xmas, cementing Reed Farrington's status as a Flyway favourite. So, after taking about half a year to think it out, it was decided that Reed would actually take over the duties of filming the opening night short, and I would document the process. The result is a behind the scenes look at the making of 'Scientific Method', a remake of a short film...

September. There's a few things that you can count on: An upcoming NHL season, leaves of red, yellow and orange, and Peyton Manning suiting up for the Colts. Wait..what? I've just been told that there's a strong possibility that the NHL season won't start on time, leaves are either still green or dead because the seasons are all screwed up and Manning plays for the Broncos now. What the hell happened? At the end of the day though, there is one thing that you can hold on to. Tiff. It's back. I'm there. Let's do this. I realize that Tiff started on Thursday, but I'm a busy guy. I have dogs now and they come first. Yes, I still have my bunny, Janis Hoplin, but she requires less involvement from a pet standpoint. It's 15 seconds in to this blog and I'm already distracted. If you came to read about pets,...

“Whenever there's a horse in a movie, I think, ‘This is a documentary about a horse that's in a movie and doesn't know it.’” That quote comes from Jay Cheel, a documentarian (Beauty Day) who also runs The Documentary Blog. He was tweeting back at me in response to a question about transparency, but this context doesn’t matter. By itself it, the statement raises a question that I’ve thought about many times in the past with animals. For a specific comparison, is there much that’s different between the lead horse in War Horse and the featured horses in the documentary Buck? Actually, maybe Buck isn’t a good example since it’s mostly about training, which is what’s done for animal “acting.&rdquo...

Why Watch? Jay Cheel (Beauty Day, How to Build a Time Machine) has an incredibly fresh eye for documentaries. Not content to keep things dry, he hunts down compelling subjects and attacks them with nimble creativity, cool camera work and strong storytelling flair. In The Politics of Competitive Board Gaming Amongst Friends (which, yes, sounds like a Community episode title), he almost-satirically points out the ridiculousness of high intensity, low stakes game-playing by taking it seriously. Specifically, he breaks down the dynamic between four friends bellying up to the table to play Settlers of Catan. This is a board game movie we can get behind. What will it cost? Only 10 minutes. Good documentaries have a very simple and direct appeal. We engage because we are watching something true, and often, something we had no idea about. I have always been drawn more towards documentaries about people or places than issues, because I find people endlessly interesting, and documentaries capture us in all our freaky glory. In the case of "Beauty Day," a Canadian documentary that is arriving on video in that country this week, I was hooked immediately by the the story of Ralph Zavadil, who made a name for himself as a local cable access celebrity in Ontario decades ago. Good news everyone! Hot Docs has just kicked off their own crowd sourcing initiative called Doc Ignite, and my next film, ‘How to Build a Time Machine’, is the first project they’re supporting! After having a blast making Beauty Day, I wanted my follow up film to be something equally entertaining and fun to make, so I decided to return to a subject I’d dealt with before; time travel. As some of you may know, in 2005 I directed a short student documentary called Obsessed & Scientific. I’d always wanted to return to that subject matter and give it the treatment I felt it deserved, and now I have the chance to do just that. Now, with the help of Hot Docs, we’re hoping You might be interesting in helping support this project! Our goal is to raise $25,000 to help cover some of our production costs, and in exchange,...

After the success of his Jackass stunt progenitor doc, Beauty Day, on both the festival circuit and on Canadian Television (Americans take note, it comes out on DVD in the Great White North on February 28) the next project from Canuck documentarian Jay Cheel is a non-fiction time travel film called How To Build A Time Machine. Cheel's work (in both documentary and absurdist-horror short filmmaking) tends to be a pretty Twitch-y mixture of Errol Morris, John Carpenter, Werner Herzog and Mario Bava, so we are pretty happy that he is moving so quickly into his second feature length film:The year is 2036. Decades after the second American Civil War and the global nuclear strike known as 'N-Day', an American soldier named John Titor is assigned...

For anybody who's sick of hearing about Beauty Day around here, don't worry...it's almost over! The life cycle of the film has now entered the 'home video' stage, which means it's just about dead (or depending on your perspective, about to be 'reborn'?). So for all of you who haven't had a chance to see it yet (which is a lot of you), here's an opportunity to own your very own copy on glorious DVD! (Note: at this point there are no blu ray plans. Sorry.) As an avid DVD/Blu Ray collector, I must say that I'm pretty proud of this release as it's absolutely Stacked with lots of great bonus features, including an audio commentary track featuring a couple Film Junk regulars. On top of that, we've got a bunch of deleted scenes that are actually good enough to have been included in the film, And some original Cap'n Video Show clips!

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? I'll get this out of the way now: Harry Potter is not on this list. I only mention this as I was excoriated back in...

Documentaries have come a long way in the past twenty years, especially in the past decade. Ten years ago, I would have been at a loss for words had you asked me to name ten “great” documentaries released in a single year. Documentary film has developed into a popular and visible form of entertainment, while having a bigger effect on society, usually addressing important issues with the goal of informing the public and pushing for social change.
The shortlist of documentary nominees for the 84th Annual Academy Awards were announced recently. As expected, many bloggers have commented on their disappointment with the number of misfires. I doubt that these same bloggers have seen the majority of the films listed, so it is a bit unfair that they presume these 15 titles aren’t worthy of consideration. With that said, I can say that two of the best films I’ve seen...

Jay Cheel's Beauty Day, a look at the life and blue-collar art from pre-Jack Ass stunt-tomfoolery pioneer Ralph Zavadil (aka Cap'n Video) is a film that you should really seek out. It is one of the better documentaries I have seen this year and it has been a very, very strong year for docs - Project Nim, Crazy Horse, Resurrect Dead, The Story of Film to name a few. It is premiering on HBO Canada in HD tonite, and will then play on The Movie Network On Demand from tomorrow onward. Humour, Pathos, and body carnage in one very solid package that has an A-Team style montage in the middle. How many docs can boast that? See the trailer below for a taste....

One of the less exciting parts of getting your pool ready for summer is taking the cover off but if you're Ralph Zavadil, removing the pool cover is material for a great stunt. Beauty Day opens on a nice spring day with Ralph climbing a ladder and jumping into the middle of his pool in an effort to remove the cover. The stunt ends badly. Ralph doesn't tie off the ladder correctly and when jumping off, the ladder wobbles back and forth and Ralph ends up bouncing on concrete before landing awkwardly in the pool with the camera running for the entire ordeal.

As we're starting to wrap up the Canadian theatrical release of Beauty Day, I thought I'd share two new clips for those of you who haven't had a chance to check out the film. For those who don't know, the film chronicles the life and times of Ralph Zavadil, aka Cap'n Video. His cable access television show, The Cap'n Video Show, ran from 1990 to 1995, spawning a small but loyal cult following. Each week Ralph performed a series of idiotic and occasionally dangerous stunts, challenging the sensibilities of his small Southern Ontario audience. Now, almost 20 years later, Ralph decides to revisit the Cap'n to shoot a 20th birthday special for the very same Cable station that cancelled him 15 years earlier. The first clip (embedded at the top of this post) features Ralph and his pal Robert shooting a skit for the Cap'n Video 20th Birthday Special. After the jump, you'll find...

Not far below the skin of every mature person is a raging, nonsensical beast of pure impulse. One which usually doesn’t show up until each thread of control is unraveled. Or after they’ve annihilated a row of drinks. Some people, however, are much more comfortable with their wild child, and in a new media savvy world they’re recorded, and later seen, these folks can be found at practically every turn. From Knoxville and his Jackass troupe to a kid secretly being recorded, shirtless and flipping out over a World of Warcraft suspension. But before there was a guarantee that every piece of footage would have an audience, Ralph Zavadil would probably still have subjected himself to documented, self-inflicted humiliation. In the St. Catherines area, he was known as local TV spirit Cap’n Video. If he saw a post, he’d climb it and then jump from it.

Ralph Zavadil is Cap'n Video, subject of the new documentary "Beauty Day"
“I was dealing with human beings, and they’re a pretty fucked up breed.”
It probably wouldn’t surprise a lot of people if it were revealed that Ralph Zavadil, the source of the above quotation, weren’t human after all. (He made a name for himself by snorting raw eggs, squirting chocolate syrup on the backs of puppies and then licking it off and performing dozens of idiotic and dangerous stunts like “rooftop tobogganing” and “clothesline skiing.”) But after the revelations and insights of “Beauty Day,” a documentary about his life and times, it could be argued that Ralph Zavadil is a actually more human than the rest of us.
Better known to his fans as Cap’n Video, the unhinged host of The Cap’n Video Show, which disturbed and delighted cable access television viewers in St.

We’ve been closely following the doc about a cable access television show, The Cap’n Video Show, a show which ran from 1990 to 1995, spawning a small but loyal cult following. The documentary followed the show’s star Ralph Zavadil, an icon of early 90’s public access TV in Southern Ontario and his rise and fall from fame. Mike recently had a chance to review the film and also interview Jay so if you haven’t checked it out yet, you should. In the meantime I found the first and I believe only clip from the film online, giving us a look at two of the main characters, Ralph (aka Cap’n Video) and his best friend Robert.
