Featuring a women screenwriters pitching session sponsored by Netflix, the biggest fiction series commissioner in Latin America, Ventana Sur has added this year a big spread from Chile’s TV agency Consejo National de Televisión, which could be a reaction to global platforms pulling out of Chile.
In terms of original titles there’s good word on Colombia’s Laura Otálora (“Impermanence”) and Argentina’s Carlos Lascano (“Lina”). Talent track records vary from the multiple near neophytes pitching in Tuesday’s Flixxo session, to name producers in the Cntv spread, from Gabriela Sandoval on “Box 205” and Leonera González on “Dangerous Love.” The Cntv showcase also features animation hit “Petit.”
A quick breakdown of titles:
Netflix
“Divorce Hotel,” (“Hotel de Divorcio,” Guadalupe Yepes, Gabriela Tagliavini, Argentina)
The latest from Yepes, winner of SoloSeries’ 2022 BBC Studios award with “Fugitives” and Tagliavini (“Christmas with you”). In this project, a jaundiced divorce attorney with...

Chilean editor-turned-filmmaker Diego Figueroa (“Los Vecinos”) is set to unveil his debut feature “Patio de Chacales”(“A Yard Of Jackals”) at Sanfic Industria’s prestige Works In Progress strand, offering a suspense-addled mindbender that pivots and retreats through the depths of its protagonists’ minds as atrocities unfurl close-to-home.
Produced by Alejandro Ugarte at Santiago-based Infractor, which co-produced the Juan Cáceres Malaga-winning title “Perro Bomba” alongside Chile’s Pejeperro Films and France’s Promenades Films, “Patio de Chacales” toys with the medium to present a singular take on clandestine crime networks.
“When Diego contacted me and proposed this subject, I found it very interesting. It’s a common and recursive theme in Chilean cinematography, but his point of view was fresh, interesting, something different from what was being done,” Ugarte told Variety. “To deal with these themes from this genre with an auteur’s vision, it’s very engaging, I think...

Cancun, Mexico — Parox, one of Chile’s most internationally-minded TV production houses, is set to produce 10-part “Silver Bridge” (Puente de Plata), a 1950s-set, true-events-inspired drama series tracing the cocaine trade’s origins back to the Huasaffs, a Chilean mob clan.
Billed as a feminist action-melodrama come narco series, “Silver Bridge” is produced by Parox’s Leonora Gonzalez, Alvaro Cabello and Sergio Gándara. The series is currently being written by Enrique Videla, co-scribe of Pablo Larrain’s HBO series “Fugitives” (“Prófugos”) and “Ventana,” the feature -debut of emerging Chilean auteur Rodrigo Susarte.
“Silver Bridge” has tapped development finance from Chile’s Corfu, part of its Ministry of Economy. Gándara and Gonzalez introduced the project to potential co-production partners and global platform execs at this year’s MipCancun market.
Much is made of Colombia’s narcos. Far less is known, let alone hits TV screens, of Chile’s. By the end of WWII,...

Venezuelan writer/director Jonathan Jakubowicz (Prófugos, Secuestro Express) has landed Robert De Niro and Édgar Ramírez for the boxing drama Hands of Stone. Ramírez is set to portray Roberto Durán, with De Niro playing trainer Ray Arcel. The Panamanian Durán was a hugely successful boxer who suddenly quit in the middle of a much-hyped match with Sugar Ray Leonard in 1980. "The infamous 'No Mas' fight is the biggest enigma in the history of boxing," Jakubowicz says. "This movie will answer the enigma, with the best talent any director can possibly dream." De Niro recently shot Grudge Match, where he'll be seen going toe-to-toe with Sylvester Stallone, who as you may recall, has also made some boxing films.

That Pablo Larraín's upcoming feature film "No" is about advertising should not mislead you into thinking that the Chilean director is game for easy entertainment. His 2011 project, drug trafficking drama "Prófugos" (Spanish for “fugitives”), nonetheless does flirt with the tenets of popular entertainment -- it's a television series. Not that today’s TV is synonymous with shallow amusement, but Larraín's trademark signature is far from your average prime time fodder. To see how the "Tony Manero" director's unforgiving biopsies of the social body work on the small screen is far more than just a curiosity. At a time when more and more talent is finding in television a fertile ground for experimentation, Larraín's TV series debut is cause for excited interest. The first two episodes of "Prófugos" screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival as part of...

Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín (Tony Manero) was born in 1976, three years after the coup d’état that toppled democratically elected socialist president Salvador Allende and ushered in the long, brutal regime of General Augusto Pinochet, whose chokehold on the South American nation lasted until 1990. Although Larraín is currently shooting the second season of Prófugos, an action-drama series for HBO Latin America about cocaine cartels — “it’s like playing a with a big toy,” he avers — the Pinochet era has continued to fascinate him. The chaotic, thunderous birth moments of this dark and deeply corrupt period in Chile’s late-modern history provide the setting for the writer-director’s latest feature, Post Mortem, a comically dour love story–cum–allegory of political madness that debuted at the 2010 Venice Film Festival. Mario Cornejo (Alfredo Castro) is a laconic mortician’s assistant whose mannered obsession with aging cabaret dancer Nancy Puelma (Antonia Zegers, in...
