Hello, and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex, an associate editor and film writer at Deadline. Today I’m chatting with Power Book III: Raising Kanan star, Patina Miller. As a major talent across film, television and musical theater Miller portrays Raquel “Raq” Thomas on the Starz original series which is coming up on the end of its third season.
Raising Kanan is the third show in the Power Universe. This one is about a young Kanan Stark (played by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s character from the first series) and how he joins his family’s growing and dangerous drug business. It takes place in Queens, New York during the 1990’s.
Raq is the mother of Kanan. To Kanan, she might come across as affectionate, yet on the streets, she embodies the epitome of toughness, navigating the male-dominated world with a blend of coldness, determination,...

Lionsgate’s prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes opened at China’s movie box office in third place over the weekend, losing to two holdover local films and earning just $4.6 million. It’s just the latest disappointing performance by a U.S. franchise film in the market.
Songbirds & Snakes has earned low to middling social scores from Chinese audiences, and ticketing app Maoyan projects it will total only about $7 million by the end of its run.
Songbirds & Snakes opens eight years after the last Hunger Games title played in theaters and 12 years after the first film hit the big screen. The previous four Hunger Games films, based on Suzanne Collins’ dystopian YA novels and starring Jennifer Lawrence, all performed considerably better in China than the new title. The Hunger Games (2012) earned a total of $27 million, while The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) took $28 million, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1...

The orchestral title, out today via Geffen Records, first appeared as the second single from the soundtrack for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1” in 2014. Fans might have been surprised when author Suzanne Collins announced a new novel in her bestselling Hunger Games series, but director Francis Lawrence was not. Working closely with Collins and producer Nina Jacobson on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2, there was always some idea that the dystopian world of Panem still had stories left to tell.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes looks back at one of the most important periods in Hunger Games’ history—the development of the deadly games themselves. Francis Lawrence is talking with Den of Geek magazine about returning to a very different arena with a very different protagonist—a young Coriolanus Snow, not yet president of Panem and more than 60 years away from terrorizing Katniss Everdeen. Tuesday’s iTunes chart saw a surge for two A24 Oscar-winning films. However, neither of the winning Netflix titles saw its winners reenter the top 10 chart. This week also saw three different films lead the top VOD charts, which is unusual, but even weirder is none placed on all three.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” ($19.99) and “The Whale” ($4.99) jumped to #1 and 2 at iTunes, a platform that’s typically quick to reflect increased interest. The films also climbed to second and third at Google Play, more likely reflecting weekend pre-Oscars interest.
Google Play has “Dragon Ball Hero: Super Hero” on top, while Vudu showed “80 for Brady” as #1. Among the chart leaders, “Everything” and “Dragon Ball” made one other list, while “Brady” is only on Vudu’s. It has, astonishingly, been 13 years since "Avatar" was released and shattered box office records across the board. All these years later, it remains the highest-grossing movie of all time (even if it briefly surrendered the crown). At long last, James Cameron is back with his long-awaited follow-up, "Avatar: The Way of Water." And, while the jury is still out on whether or not it can get anywhere near the 2.92 billion of the original, we have some initial numbers that indicate things are looking up in the early going. Specifically, the Thursday preview numbers are in, and people turned up.
As per The Numbers, "The Way of Water" earned 17 million in Thursday preview screenings. That firmly falls into the "very good but maybe not record-breaking great" camp. For context, other movies that have opened with the same preview numbers include "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1" (121.8 million opening weekend) and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2...

The Hollywood Reporter said during the panel discussion:
Johnson tackled an age-old question: who would win in a fight, Black Adam or Superman? Earlier in the week, rumors circulated that Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill might show up or send a video message for the panel, but that didn’t come to fruition.
Said the actor of a matchup between the DC characters: “Pound for pound, they are pretty close. I guess it probably all depends on who is playing Superman.

When he was fresh out of USC’s School of Dramatic Arts in the mid-1990s, Danny Strong’s goals were modest. The future multihyphenate just wanted to be able to pay his rent with his earnings as an actor.
It took about 18 months, but he got there. And it wasn’t because he lucked into a cushy network series gig.
“It was scrappy work,” Strong recalls. “It was this commercial, that guest star role, this small part in a movie, that big part in a small movie. It was radio commercials, all of the above. And auditioning for endless animation jobs that I never booked.”Over time, Strong realized that while guest shots on “Seinfeld,”“3rd Rock From the Sun” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” which later blossomed into a recurring role, allowed him to pay his bills, his career overall was not advancing. The frustration and “mild depression...

Thus far, 2017 is without a $100 million opener, but that will all change this weekend as Disney's latest animated classic turned live action film, Beauty and the Beast, is set to open in over 4,200 theaters in Us and Canada. In addition to becoming the first $100 million opener of 2017, this "tale as old as time" may challenge Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for the March opening weekend record and rank among the top ten all-time domestic openers. All told, this weekend will see the top twelve smash the $122 million the top twelve grossed from the same weekend last year. In fact, Beauty and the Beast should easily top $122 million all on its own. Anticipation for Disney's Beauty and the Beast has been sky high for some time now as Disney has taken every opportunity to market the fantasy feature online and across all its media channels. As of March 6, online ticket retailer Fandango.

This year, the career resurrection of Mel Gibson will get two shots in the arm. He's back behind the camera with a new directorial effort, helming the WWII tale "Hacksaw Ridge" starring Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Teresa Palmer, and Gibson himself. In 2008, Suzanne Collins released “The Hunger Games” into the world. Four years later the movie would cement Jennifer Lawrence as a blockbuster star. But all good things must come to an end. Last year the final installment — “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II” — brought the entirety of Panem society crashing down. If you had read the books, you probably joined in the discussions about whether the film would dare go as far as the novels to show that war rarely has winners. Well, they did it. They dared to blur the line between heroes and villains. In the clip above — exclusive to HitFix Harpy ahead of the home video release — even Katniss isn’t immune to succumbing to her darker instincts. Agrabah: 'Aladdin' city that Republicans want to bomb. Is Agrabah Burning? Nearly 1 in 3 Republican primary voters want to bomb 'Aladdin' city According to a new poll by Public Policy Polling, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, nearly one third of 532 Republican primary voters support bombing Agrabah. Agrabah? Is that the name of the “capital” of Daesh (a.k.a. Is / Isis)? Or perhaps that's the place where Jihadis buy their weapons of mass murder? A hummus-filled North African dish maybe? Wrong. Wrong (you must be thinking of some U.S. gun store or European back alley). Wrong. Agrabah is actually the name of a city located in the exotic land of Arabia, itself located in … Aladdin, the 1992 animated Disney movie directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, and featuring the voices of Robin Williams, Scott Weinger, and Linda Larkin. So, why would so many Republicans want to bomb it?...

Katniss Everdeen's last stand at the box office saw The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 opening to a franchise-low $101 million in North America for a worldwide bow of $247 million. While that's a hefty start for Lionsgate, Mockingjay 2 came in behind expectations even on a global basis. Chicago – This has to be what the filmmakers intended when they split the final book of the “Hunger Games” series into two films. While “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1” was all set up, Part 2 doesn’t just lead up to a huge climax.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
It’s all climax in a campaign that barely stops to breathe. When the characters aren’t running for their lives they’re engaged in a passionless love triangle. It’s all brooding conversations in darkness, and booby traps as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) marches on the Capitol to stick an arrow through President Snow’s (Donald Sutherland) heart.
This series is no one’s idea of great filmmaking, but they do have enough resources and tools at their disposal to elevate them above the usual Young Adult franchises. Gone are the social and political commentaries and the fantastical world of the capitol filled with extravagent excess.
