One of Westwood’s historic movie theaters will soon have new ownership.
Filmmaker Jason Reitman is leading an unnamed group of investors in purchasing the art deco Fox Village Theater, located at 945 Broxton Ave. The news, first reported by The Ankler’s Peter Kiefer, was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Per the initial report, Reitman and crew are “weeks away” from taking over the property in a deal that is currently in escrow.
Last summer, reports surfaced that the landmarked Fox Village was up for grabs for a $12 million sum, listed by Newmark’s Capital Markets group, which promoted the theater as an “iconic property” and “one of the most identifiable, landmark properties in Los Angeles.” The listing also stated that the 24,099-square-foot building, which houses 1,375 seats inside the theater, had not previously been up for sale.

Get ready to celebrate Christmas in Virgin River. The show’s first-ever holiday special is coming to Netflix in November. The two-part season 5 finale will feature plenty of seasonal cheer. But hopefully, it will also answer some of the many burning questions we had at the end of Part 1, from what the unexpected reappearance of a certain character could mean for Charmaine to how Preacher will cope with the possible discovery of Wes’s body.
Keep reading for five questions we’re hoping are answered when Virgin River Season 5 Part 2 drops Nov. 30 on Netflix.

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about Episodes 509 (Angel’s Peak) and 510 (Labor Day) of Netflix’s series Virgin River.
Part 1 of Virgin River‘s fifth season came to a close with eventful last two episodes. In typical Virgin River fashion, there were bombshell revelations — Lizzie is pregnant, baddie Calvin is the father of Charmaine’s twins, and the big one is the cliffhanger that set up the upcoming Christmas-themed two-episode Part 2 — Mel’s biological father is likely a man from Virgin River, identity unknown (for now).
That last shocker does stretch the limits of believability, even for a soapy romantic drama, as Mel originally landed in Virgin River, a place she said she had never heard of, after answering an ad.
In other developments, Jack takes Mel on a hike to Angel’s Peak to have a heart-to-heart after she had pulled away following her miscarriage. They get lost and rained on,...

Excuse us while we pick our jaws up off the floor. Netflix’s Virgin River never fails to deliver when it comes to shocking, season-ending twists, whether it’s Mel finding Jack on the floor of his bar bleeding out from a bullet wound or Charmaine confessing that she lied when she said Jack was the father of her unborn babies. So, we were expecting something of a cliffhanger heading into Virgin River Season 5 Part 1 finale, “Labor Day.” But we still weren’t prepared for what happened in the episode’s final moments, and how it changed things for one key character.

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is many things – it’s a cracking good horror movie that is set almost entirely on a doomed ship traveling from Transylvania to London; it’s a refreshing expansion of “Dracula” lore; and it also is a nice nod to Universal Pictures’ classic monster-filled past. It’s existence, though, feels like a bit of a miracle, especially if you had followed the project’s development over the past 20 – yes, 20 – years. That might be the blink of an eye to an immortal creature of the night like Dracula, but in moviemaking terms, that’s an eternity.
Let’s take a look at where “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” started, with a spec script that shook up Hollywood, and where it ended up, as a big studio movie from Universal, with commentary from the eventual film’s director André Øvredal.
Just be warned: there are choppy waters ahead.

Since shifting its focus from first-run films to cult classics nearly a decade ago, the Mahoning Drive-In Theater in Lehighton, Pennsylvania — a rural borough about 75 miles northeast of Philadelphia — has thrived as a haven for genre fans. Zombie Fest, Godzilla-palooza, Troma-Thon with Lloyd Kaufman, Camp Blood Slasher Celebration, Werewolf Weekend, and John Waters’ Filthy Film Fest are just a few of the events programmed this season.

The long shadow of the war and its ravages continue to haunt a group of late middle-aged Sarajevan friends in the low-budget, tonally uneven dramedy “May Labor Day” from Bosnian multi-hyphenate Pjer Žalica. Although the material is both a little thin and a tad familiar, the script ticks off a range of contemporary social problems and issues such as the brain drain to Europe of the educated younger generation, junkie no-hopers who get clean through faith, the orphan kids kept off the street through charitable ventures and the nagging dissatisfaction felt by the ordinary men who fought for their country, but feel that it has lost its way.
Serving as the closing night attraction of this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival, “May Labor Day” is a co-production of all the territories of former Yugoslavia and features an ensemble of the region’s best-known actors, who appear to take great pleasure in performing together.

Threatened by gangsters she conned, Angèle decides to leave her neighborhood and starts working as a nanny for Hélène’s 10-year-old son in a chic Parisian area. Although she’s supposed to keep a low profile, Angèle meets other nannies, some of whom are being taken advantage of, and sets out to help them. Haïdara stars in the film opposite Ahmed Sylla (“The Climb”) and Léa Drucker (“Custody”).

The Serbian writer-director is shooting his second feature-length fiction film, which combines socio-political realism with elements of a psychological thriller. Serbian writer-director Mladen Djordjević, known for his brave and provocative style and references to the tradition of the Yugoslav Black Wave in his transgressive arthouse hit Life and Death of a Porno Gang and the docudrama Vienna Hallways, started shooting his second feature-length fiction film, Labour Day, on location near Belgrade last weekend. The plot follows a group of ex-workers from a recently closed factory, who, in their fight for personal dignity, reach out to the supernatural. The film relies on a large ensemble of regional actors, including Tamara Krcunović (Humidity), Leon Lučev (The Load), Momo Pićurić (The Black Pin), Ivan Djordjević, Szilvia Kriszan, Mirsad Tuka, Lidija Kordić, Tomislav Trifunović, Olivera Viktorović and Stefan Sterev. Djordjević describes Labour Day as “a film about the potential for rebellion and the limitless.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife was supposed to hit theaters next month, but Sony was forced to delay the film almost a year due to Covid-19. Fans were understandably upset, but the extended wait is allowing director Jason Reitman to not only fine-tune the movie, but also think about the future of the franchise.
While on a Zoom call with the original Ghostbusters cast, Reitman revealed that he’s already developing another sequel, saying:
“I can’t tell you anything, but we are working on another installment. We have a little bit more time, and look, as a director, I’ve never had this opportunity to actually take a pause and breathe and look at the movie again. [The extra time has been] extraordinarily valuable. I’ve been spending my days editing Ghostbusters, so that’s where I’ve been.”
Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows a single mom who moves her two kids to a small town to start over.

Although he wouldn’t call himself a die-hard fan, composer Rolfe Kent was familiar with the comedy duo of Laurel and Hardy before signing onto the film “Stan and Ollie.” “I certainly grew up with them,” he reveals. “The theme tune was hardwired into my head.” But what really attracted him to the film, which focuses on the final theater tour of Stan Laurel (Steve Coogan) and Oliver Hardy (John C. Reilly) through post-war Britain, was director Jon S. Baird, who’s “such an interesting and engaging guy.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Kent above.

When you’re being wrongly accused of murder, it’s nice to have your mom by your side, isn’t it?
We have our first look at Season 3 of Riverdale, thanks to a series of photos The CW just released, and they confirm what we expected: Molly Ringwald will reprise her role as Archie’s mother Mary Andrews this season. (She’ll appear in the season premiere, titled “Labor Day,” airing Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8/7c.) Mary is an established attorney, so it makes sense that she’d return to pitch in on Archie’s legal defense, now that Hiram has framed him for murder.

If you ever wanted fashion advice from Victoria Beckham, now is your chance -- but it'll cost you.
The designer teamed up with Vanity Fair's Derek Blasberg for his segment, "Derek Does Stuff With a Friend," to give people in Central Park in New York City fashion advice for the low price of $2.
"I will give them what they want, what you really, really want," the former Spice Girl says via FaceTime as she holds up a peace sign.
Among the fashion questions that Beckham received were, "Is it Ok to wear white after Labor Day?" (To which she said yes, because "rules are meant to be broken.") One person asked her opinion on man buns, another asked for stylish maternity fashion tips, while somebody inquired about how to make gym clothes sexy as well as what her overall opinion was on the outfit they were currently wearing.

Halloween is no trick or treat for theaters, which get rocks instead of candy every time. Last year, the Halloween weekend was the second-lowest grossing of 2016. In 2015, when October 31 fell on Saturday, it was the single worst. There’s a chance this year won’t reach the same depths; in the competition for the Most Awful Weekend of 2017, there’s those weekends right before Labor Day — and the traditionally wretched second weekend of December is still to come. Still, it will be weak with “Jigsaw” (the latest in the “Saw” franchise), “Suburbicon,” George Clooney’s poorly reviewed satire, and “Thank You for Your Service,” with Miles Teller as an Iraq War veteran.
Holiday weekends are a big deal for studios, but they can be tricky. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the easiest ones to deal with, and serve as the best time of year to reach older audiences and families. Independence Day...

Remember when Warner Bros.’ surprise smash “It” seemed like it might augur the revival of a near-dreadful box-office year? While “It” now stands at $315 million, that second wind didn’t happen — and looking ahead, there’s little hope of another film worthy of that optimism. Of course, in two weeks we have a new movie from the Marvel conveyor belt in “Thor: Ragnarok,” which could open above $100 million. However, even at that level, it may not rise to savior status.
Initial returns for “It” set records, single-handedly reversed several weeks’ worth of low ticket sales, and threatened to make a real dent in the 6 percent decline in grosses. Unfortunately, other films haven’t joined that rebellion. Sony’s “Blade Runner 2049” may not even see a worldwide gross to equal its production and marketing costs.

Despite previously telling Howard Stern she has a thing for chefs, Johansson and Flay are just friends and neighbors, a rep for the actress tells People.
The Avengers star has been linked to Saturday Night Live cast member Colin Jost, who sang Johansson’s praises when asked about her at the Emmys earlier this year.

In a bid to join the fall awards-season conversation and raise its profile, the La Film Festival, presented by Film Independent, will move to late September for its 2018 edition. The 23-year-old fest had traditionally been held in June.

While the La Film Festival in recent years has focused on spotlighting Los Angeles-centric films and diverse filmmakers,...

New entry “American Made” (Universal) and holdovers “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” (20th Century Fox) and “It” (Warner Bros.). are basically tied at the top for weekend box office #1, with estimates placing all within $310,000. Any of the three could emerge on top when Sunday’s actual numbers are compiled after the weekend.
That’s good news for “It” in its fourth weekend (now headed even higher than the $325 million that seemed likely a couple days ago), more mixed for the opening of Tom Cruise’s latest film and the holdover for the expensive second release in the “Kingsman” franchise.
What is not good news is the sudden 20 per cent-plus drop in box office total revenues for the weekend. After three post-Labor Day stanzas where “It” propelled a strong resurgence that gave hope that the mediocre summer’s returns might improve, the current results suggest that the year will end down...
