Very good Don Carlo, especially its Philip and Posa
Don Carlo is an opera which was a new discovery for me and while its story is not as touching as Rigoletto,La Traviata,Aida or Othello ,it is still very good. This 1978 La Scala production is very good .Sets and costumes are lovely and they do evoke 16.century Spain. Youthful Placido Domingo here is amazing as Don Carlo. One thing that dissapoints is his bland reaction to Posa's death. Domingo is usually way more expressive,so I blame the director. Margaret Price as Elisabeth was the weak link of the cast, her voice is good and her acting touching ,just needed a bit more dynamic. Elena Obratsova is truly good as Eboli. The highlights of the production are Phillip of Nesterenko and especially Renato Bruson's touching, dignified and loyal Posa. His O Carlo, ascolta and Nesterenko's Ella giamai m'amo are so beautiful. Overall, very good Don Carlo ,especially lifted by its Philip and Posa.9/10.
