Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Over the last few years it has become increasingly easy to see mainstream Asian films in North America at the same time they are released in their home countries. Thanks to partnerships with small, international distributors, the major multiplex chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal) have devoted a handful of screens in major markets to showing new releases from India, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of these titles fall under the radar of both critics and audiences outside the diasporic communities to which they are targeted. They play for a week or two and then disappear, outside of a handful of breakout titles. Last year Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid made headlines for its high per-screen averages in North America as it shattered domestic box office records in China.

Hulu added a handful of love-related movies and TV shows in February, giving the whole month a Valentine’s Day vibe. And although March doesn’t have such an obvious theme, Hulu seems to think it does. Based on some of the movies coming to the streaming service next month, March’s theme is apparently karate, and that sounds pretty damn cool. Is there an official karate day in March? If not, there should be.
Staring on March 1, Hulu users will be able to stream punching-based movies like The Karate Kid, Legend Of Kung Fu Rabbit (a 2011 animated film), The Karate Kid: Part 2, Ninja Masters, Shaolin, Tai Chi Hero, Tai Chi Zero (a prequel, not a movie about a guy who sucks at Tai Chi), Saving General Yang, Young Detective Dee, The Karate Kid 3, and what is arguably one of the greatest kung-fu movies of all ...

Fresh off the San Diego Comic-Con presses, AMC debuted a trailer for its new martial arts/drama/fantasy series “Into The Badlands,” starring Daniel Wu and created, executive produced and showrun by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (“Smallville,” the 2011 “Charlie’s Angels,” “Shanghai Knights,” and “Shanghai Noon”). A panel was also held at Comic-Con with Wu (also an executive producer on the show), Gough, and Millar, as well as co-stars Emily Beecham, Orla Brady, Marton Csokas, Aramis Knight, and director/executive producer David Dobkin (“The Judge,” “The Change-Up,” “Wedding Crashers,” “Shanghai Knights”), along with fight director/executive producer Stephen Fung, most known for helming “Tai Chi Zero” and “Tai Chi Hero.” From the trailer, the show appears to be a fascinating composite of “Django Unchained” (Stacy Sher and Michael Shamberg, who produced “Django Unchained” and other Tarantino films such as “Pulp Fiction,” are also executive producers), the “Mad Max” films,...

I love Martial Arts films, or better yet, Asian action cinema in general; Kung Fu, Ninjas, Samurai, Thai Boxing, Gun Fu, and my latest love: Silat. As escapist fun goes, nothing makes me happier than a good chop socky, hell, even a bad chop socky is not without its charm. A laughable plot, weird and esoteric fighting styles, and of course, terrible dubbing can be just as much fun as watching Shaolin Monks practice ancient techniques, that, if you were quick enough, and maybe had a knack, you could even learn a real move or two. “Old School” kung fu flicks always spoke to me because of the sense of respect and honor portrayed in the character of the hero, but more importantly, the idea that an individual could develop his body and mind and achieve feats of greatness.

The Kickboxer movie reboot is still moving forward and we have a bit of good news and bad news. Let's start off with the good: Jean-Claude Van Damme is set to return to the franchise! The bad news: Thai martial arts star Tony Jaa (Ong Bak, Furious 7) had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Van Damme is taking Jaa's place, and in this version of the story Van Damme is the master, not the student. He will play an updated version of the original film’s Master Chow.

He is one of the most impressive martial artists on the face of the earth. His speed and intensity is off the charts and Tony Jaa has now signed on for the Kickboxer remake. The original 1989 movie starred Jean Claude Van Damme and while I was pretty young when I saw it, the movie had some fantastic fight sequences and has stayed with me ever since. Dave Bautista and Georges St-Pierre are also on board and will star alongside Alain Moussi who is playing Kurt Sloane and must learn the ancient kick boxing art of Muay Thai in order to avenge his brother. The movie is directed by Stephen Fung who is well suited for this type of movie, with the likes of Tai Chi Zero and House Of Fury under his belt. (Cbr) The "Kickboxer" remake just pulled in some next-level talent. Directed by "Tai Chi Zero‘s" Stephen Fung, the 3D action film has added Thai muay thai master Tony Jaa and British martial artist Scott Adkins, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Jaa gained international fame after starring in "Ong-bak" and "The Protector." He took a break to become a Buddhist monk, but is back making films, including his first American feature performance in "Fast & Furious 7." Adkins has made a name for himself in the "Ninja" films, and appeared alongside original "Kickboxer" star Jean-Claude Van Damme in "The Expendables 2," "Assassination Games" and "Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning." “'Kickboxer' will display a style of acrobatic, rapid-fire martial arts action that Scott Adkins is increasingly becoming synonymous with,” producer Brian O’Shea said. “Along with Tony Jaa, 'Kickboxer' has compiled a talented cast to push the boundaries of the martial arts form.

“Kickboxer,” one of two upcoming remakes of a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie from the ’80s (“Bloodsport” being the other one) has officially added a pretty impressive list of fighters to its cast. At least, if you like your martial artists in a movie to know actual, you know, martial arts. The film, set to be directed by “Tai Chi Zero’s” Stephen Fung (who is also bringing a kung fu drama called “Badlands” to AMC later next year, can’t wait for that one myself!), will star proven asskickers Scott Adkins, Tony Jaa (of “Ong Bak” fame), and Alain Moussi. The trio will join “Guardians of the Galaxy’s” Dave Bautista and former Ufc welterweight champion George St. Pierre (last seen getting his ass kicked by Captain America) in the flick. Despite those big names (well, in the realm of action movies, anyway), the lesser known Moussi will be your star.

The Kickboxer remake in the works since last summer has been steadily building its cast of tough guys, including two veterans of hit Marvel films in Dave “Guardians Of The Galaxy” Bautista and Georges “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” St-Pierre. Could AMC successfully resurrect the martial arts TV drama?
On Friday, AMC announced a straight-to-series order for Badlands, a new series based “very loosely” on the Chinese tale “Journey to the West.” The project is from writer-producers Al Gough and Miles Millar, who in addition to The CW’s Smallville also did the kung fu comedy film Shanghai Noon. Also on board are producers Stacy Sher and Michael Shamberg (Pulp Fiction) and martial arts filmmakers Daniel Wu (Tai Chi Zero) and Stephen Fung. A kung fu TV show on “AMC”? Hell, why not. They could fight zombies, too. Minus the zombies, that’s apparently what former “Smallville” producers Al Gough and Miles Millar are bringing to American TV, along with Hong Kong mainstays Daniel Wu and Stephen Fung. Wu is a long-time Hong Kong actor who has broadened his career to Western work with “The Man with the Iron Fists” and “Europa Report,” and Fung is an actor turned director, recently responsible for the “Tai Chi Zero” trilogy of kung fu films. The duo is teaming up with Gough and Millar for “Badlands” (the show’s current working title), which has already been given a first season, 6-episode greenlight by cable net AMC, home of “The Walking Dead” and “Breaking Bad.” “Badlands” is a genre-bending martial arts series very loosely based on the classic Chinese tale “Journey to the West.” In a land controlled by feudal barons,...

FATface Production, the Hong Kong-based VFX studio behind Tai Chi Zero and Storm Warriors, ventures into its own independent sci-fi project, Virtus. The following teaser is in fact a proof of concept video but it's unclear if its for a potential feature length film or a short. There isn't much info about the project other than its directed by Kofai, a veteran visual effects supervisor at FATface. The film's Mech concept designer is Long Ouyang who recently designed the Green Goblin suit on The Amazing Spider-Man 2. One thing's for sure, and that's it's loaded with high-concept robots with quality visual effects; a welcoming surprise in an arena not exactly known for this type of genre. You'll find the 40-second PoC embedded below....

There are plenty of Jean-Claude Van Damme's old films that are getting remade, including "Blood Sport," "Kickboxer" and "Timecop." And today, we have some casting news regarding "Kickboxer." The Exchange has unveiled that the remake of the 1989 action film will be directed by Stephen Fung (Tai Chi Zero) and will star newcomer Alain Moussi. Batista is set to star in another time. This time it’s a remake of the 1989 film Kickboxer, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
In addition to Batista, Ufc star and long time Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre will be in the movie as well. The lead role will be played by martial artist Alain Moussie. Stephen Fung of Tai Chi Zero and Tai Chi Hero will be directing.
The 1989 version starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and kickboxing champion Dennis Alexio. While the movie was not a big budget film (it only cost a reported $1.5 million to make), it did bring in around $15 million in the box office. It was more known for being one of those films you might watch on a boring Saturday afternoon. Van Damme had a few movies like that. Another good Van Damme fighting film from that era was Bloodsport.

Since last summer, we've known that a remake of the Jean-Claude Van Damme flick Kickboxer was in the works, and now the project is headed to the Cannes Film Market to drum up some interest with foreign buyers. And along with that sales pitch comes news of two wholly appropriate co-stars. THR has word that WWE star Dave Bautista and Ufc champion Georges St. Pierre will step into the ring for the film. Coincidentally, both fighters are just coming off roles in the Marvel films Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, respectively. However, neither of these two stars are taking the lead. Instead, it will be stuntman and martial artist Alain Moussi taking the lead role for Hong Kong director Stephen Fung, who made waves at the Venice and Toronto film festivals, and saw his film Tai Chi Zero top the box office in China, landing him agency representation in Hollywood.

The cast of Duncan Jones' Warcraft continues to grow with the awesome addition of Clancy Brown and Daniel Wu. They join the previously cast Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Toby Kebbell, and Robert Kazinsky.
Brown is one of my favorite character actors, and he has been in a ton of films and TV shows over the years. One of the most recent films he was in was Homefront with Jason Statham. He's also been in things such as The Shawshank Redemption, Carnival, and has done a ton of voice work. As for Wu, he's been in films such as Tai Chi Zero, Chinese Zodiac, and Europa Report.
The first script for the film was written by Charles Leavitt, which was then rewritten by Jones. Production is set to begin as planned in Vancouver this January, and it will be released on March 11th, 2016!

It’s hard not to feel slightly cheated by Tai Chi Hero, the sequel to Tai Chi Zero, in that it feels like four different kung fu films in one, and yet it barely seems to have the requisite action of even one. At one point our hero is tasked with facing down a series of martial arts masters, but it’s essentially as an aside in the plot and not something the writer or director really wanted to focus on, consequently the film speeds through this sequence and it really amounts to nothing. It’s a little bit comedy, a little bit romance, a tiny bit war film, and sporadically a kung fu film. But if you go in expecting enough of any of those elements to really enjoy, you’ll be mostly disappointed. All you get are a few well-staged fight scenes, but even they feel far to...

It's a double impact of Jean Claude Van Damme film remake news today, though sadly it doesn't include 1991's "Double Impact" itself.
Rather, a pair of the 'Muscles from Brussels' late 1980s martial arts features are undergoing the remake/reboot treatment - 1988's "Bloodsport" and 1989's "Kickboxer".
"V for Vendetta" helmer James McTeigue is set to direct the "Bloodsport" remake over at Relativity.
Robert Kamen penned the script from a story by Kamen and Phillip Noyce. Craig Rosenberg will work on a McTeigue-sanctioned rewrite.
In the original, Van Damme played an American Army officer whose skill with ninjutsu comes in handy when he engages in a Hong Kong underground fighting tournament.
The new version's protagonists are "morally-conflicted 21st century mercenaries", while the fighting style is that of Brazilian Vale Tudo.
Meanwhile, Radar Pictures is producing a reboot of the "Kickboxer" franchise with Hong Kong director Stephen Fung ("Tai Chi Zero") set to direct the project.

Just yesterday brought news of some progress on the gestating reboot of the Jean-Claude Van Damme martial arts drama Bloodsport with V for Vendetta and Ninja Assassin director James McTeigue at the helm. Now another Van Damme fighting hit is getting the remake treatment as well. Deadline has word that Radar Pictures, the company behind this year's sequel Riddick, is looking to remake the 1989 film Kickboxer which actually arrived a year after Van Damme made his breakthrough with Bloodsport. Right now, Hong Kong director Stephen Fung is attached to direct, which should make for some great action. Fung is a rising star right now after making a splash at the Venice and Toronto film festivals, and his film Tai Chi Zero topped the box office in China, landing him agency representation in Hollywood. No cast is in place yet (and Fung could always make an appearance himself since he's also...

Remakes of Bloodsport and Kickboxer – 80s martial arts films that made Van Damme's name – heading for big screen soon
What goes around, comes around. With the man himself consigned to showboating cameos in The Expendables 2 and straight to DVD action flicks, the early films of Jean-Claude Van Damme are now deemed cultish enough to warrant reboots. The films in question are Bloodsport, from 1988, and 1989's Kickboxer; they made Jean-Claude Van Damme's name, and established the Muscles from Brussels as a major force in martial-arts cinema, and are now due to remade in the near future.
Of the two projects, Bloodsport looks likely to have the higher profile, as it will be backed by Hollywood powerhouse Relativity, with veteran producer Ed Pressman (American Psycho, The Crow) on board and V for Vendetta's James McTeigue attached to direct. The original – which showcased characteristic Van Damme moves such as split-kicking...

No, you’re not imagining things, another Jean-Claude Van Damme movie is set to be remade for our modern age. Yesterday, we told you about the “Bloodsport” redo moving ahead with James McTeigue and now comes word that the remake to Jcvd’s 1989 follow-up “Kickboxer” has nabbed a filmmaker of its own. Deadline is reporting that actor-turned-director Stephen Fung will be at the helm of the remake with TV veterans Jim McGrath and Dimitri Logothetis handling scripting duties. Fung last directed the Chinese box-office hit “Tai Chi Zero” which we caught at Venice and had fun with (read our review here). That film saw the director attempting to play on the same big-budget plane as U.S. studio films, so it’ll be interesting to see how Fung does on American soil with a possible franchise. Strangely this is the third Jcvd film this year to have a remake either...
