Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who series 14 episode 1 “Space Babies”.
The new series of Doctor Who begins with The Doctor and Ruby encountering an abandoned spaceship that doubles as a daycare. The babies sit in computerized strollers while a computerized nanny takes care of them. The time travelers have to figure out why the babies were abandoned and who or what caused the human crew to flee or die.
Den Of Geek interviewed Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson to find out the behind-the-scenes tricks used to make the titular “Space Babies” come alive on screen.
Gatwa and Gibson describe “Space Babies” as the most technically challenging episode they filmed in series 14. “There were 12 real babies and then they’d get shipped off, and then we’d get these rubber jelly babies, that kind of looked like demon versions of the babies,” Gatwa says. The dolls apparently had an awkward plastic feel to them.

Being cast as a scheming toff in the global phenomenon Bridgerton was a surprise for Claudia Jessie. Fiercely proud of her roots, the Brummie talks about etiquette lessons, getting too many tattoos and why working-class actors so often get a rough deal
The actor Claudia Jessie greets everyone – including journalists, I discover – with an almighty hug. “Hello bab,” she says as we embrace, before returning to the barista, still grinning. We’re meeting in a central Birmingham café, not far from where she lives, and Jessie is displaying the terrier enthusiasm of a kid on holiday. For two straight hours, through tough topics and all, she’s a flurry of sunshine and smiles. “Really,” she declares, “I’m just the happiest I’ve ever been, I couldn’t be happier. My life has, unequivocally, been a lot better than I thought it would be.”
It’s not hard to see why she’s flying high.

Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker – which was pulled from TIFF in 2022 over “rights issues” — starts a theatrical debut today at the IFC Center, moving to LA’s Landmark’s Nuart next weekend and expanding thereafter with about 85 booking so far — a nice outcome for the mixed-media coming-of-age dark superhero parody that “had gone into into hibernation mode” until Outfest LA Film Festival, said Frank Jaffe, whose distribution company Altered Innocence acquired it then. It’s U.S premiere garnered a Special Mention in the North American Narrative Feature Competition.

Exclusive: The government-backed body responsible for policing UK talent agencies has launched an industry-wide investigation amid concerns over the conduct of certain companies.
Deadline understands that the Employment Agency Standards Inspectorate (Easi) is looking at the entertainment space, including carrying out inspections on agencies.
Easi declined to comment on the probe, nor would it identify the companies that will be subject to compliance visits. It is not clear when its work will be concluded or if its findings will be published.
Easi sits within the UK’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and enforces the Employment Agencies Act of 1973.
Complaints about individual companies can spark investigations, but a source suggested that the entertainment industry inspections are broader in scope.
Deadline is aware that the Easi has received complaints about two agencies in recent months: Bodhi Talent and Mad Dog 2020 Casting.

Exclusive: Mad Dog 2020 Casting, a 25-year-old British agency that supplies background actors to major productions, is facing legal action after failing to pay scores of clients.
Equity and Bectu, two of the most prominent UK creative industry unions, are pursuing legal claims on behalf of members who are owed thousands of pounds from jobs they completed in 2023.
Below-the-line actors who worked on shows including Doctor Who and Call The Midwife have been caught up in the debacle, which has rumbled on for months.
Mad Dog promised to process all outstanding payments by the end of January, but a month on, countless extras remain impacted.
Equity said 24 of its members have claims against Mad Dog. It is unclear how many Bectu members are embroiled in the issue.
A poll of nearly 12,000 background actors on private Facebook group Heavy Pencil showed that at least 88 people were still chasing payment as of last month.

The dystopian sci-fi film "Logan's Run" is set in a supposedly idyllic future society where residents above 30 mysteriously disappear. The hedonistic metropolis is enclosed by a dome, and those who choose to explore the world outside — and the secrets that it holds — are labeled "runners." Michael York stars in the film as the titular protagonist, an undercover police officer who infiltrates the runners only to find that he, too, opposes the laws that he once worked to uphold and helps them lead an uprising.
"Logan's Run" was nominated for its cinematography and set decoration in the 1977 Academy Awards. It even received a special achievement award for its visual effects. The futuristic set and costume design were almost identical to the smash-hit sci-fi adventure film "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope," which was released the following year. It's possible that "Star Wars" even drew inspiration from the 1976 film. However,...

Spend on UK film and high-end TV slid sharply to £4.23B ($5.3B) in the strike-hit 2023, according to the BFI’s latest annual stats.
The figure was 35% down on a record 2022, the BFI said, while floating the silver lining of £4.3B being nearly level with 2019’s pre-Covid spend. There were other green shoots such as a small rise in cinema admissions.
It will come as little surprise that the figures fell so starkly given that the latter half of the year saw film and high-end TV production severely dented due to the writers and actors strikes across the pond.
Film production in the UK fell to £1.36B in 2023 spend, a 31% drop on 2022’s figure, while high-end TV was down by the larger 38% to £2.9B. As with the past few years, high-end TV made up the brunt of overall production spend at around two-thirds.
