Enough to Hold Attention
TheVideoGameScrub17 July 2023
Currently this show sits in a place for me that it holds my attention. I am neither captivated nor bored by the story. As with anything associated with TWD, the acting and sets are good. While I can say that I miss Negan's evil, ruthless personality it is nice to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan play the character in a different way. The show has promise and it's nice to see that after so much exposure to these characters in TWD and now Dead City, they haven't become completely stale or boring. I believe this show is not for the casual Walking Dead fan but someone who is truly invested in the character progression of Maggie and Negan.

I don't know how to feel about this, though in a good way
justdan202315 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Well, to be perfectly honest, I'm mixed about this episode. Of course, the production quality is amazing. We also got to meet a new character, and more backstories out of the Marshal and the Croat.

On the other hand, however, there are a few things that couldn't help but to bother me. First of all, I just couldn't grasp why Maggie can't just take Tomasso's oxygen tank, ESPECIALLY after its owner had died (did it break or something?). I'm not sure if they ever show a reason why Maggie won't take the tank (If that is the case, I'm sorry if I'm blind to see that).

Secondly, the build-up to the mutant walker at the end of the episode, or rather the "Walker King" as Eli Jorne had called it. They showed us that, and Maggie killed it with just a few stabs at it. Like yeah, it's cool but wouldn't it be much cooler and have much more impact if the walker is tougher than it looks, and Maggie has to find a way to kill such abomination (like the Bloater in the Last of Us). Maggie killing it like that is just too easy (I'm not saying that she should've dropped a bomb on it or something). The point is that the walker is nothing but for mere shock value.

So yeah, this is my review on this episode, and my least favourite one so far. I hope the finale will end with a bang.

Boring: A Series of Not that Interesting Conversations [6/10]
panagiotis199317 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
My Reaction / Review for The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 1 Episode 5: Episode 4 was ok and I gave it a rating of 7/10. Episode 4 wasnt that good so I expect something better this time. 15 minutes in and absolutely nothing is happening, yawning. Conversations and more conversations. Let's just walk and talk. More conversations, awesome, let's talk more guys. The bald dude died, finally some good news. The Croat is here, finally. The Croat is hiding his deformed ear in this episode? No budget for make up I guess? The Croat seems to have some kind of weird relationship with that woman. We have a cool giant walker mutant, didn't expect that. Finally it's over, what a boring episode, nothing happens, just the characters walking around and talking without anything to move the story forward. Huge dissapointment. My rating is 6/10.

this show is just for TWD fans

Warning: Spoilers
Turning zombies into methane isn't even realistic (the writers say that the Croat is scientific, people, please stop.). The worst of this fact, that the writers stress gain on this, the nobel prize committee should be aware of to the writers of this show this years.

Decomposing bodies not only release gases such as methane into its environment, but also hydrogen sulfide and carbon (and more), a large number of corpses in a small place is highly toxic and this should knock down unconscious to the ground in mere seconds anyone who dares to enter without a compressed air breathing apparatus but not in the Walking Dead universe, at least the actors had to cough, feign some physical discomfort, I don't know, drink water, rub their eyes, imagination doesn't flow in this show. The worst thing is that we see Maggie without even using oxygen once, she must be some kind of droid or superhuman, because she should be dead.

Do the writers of this show do some sort of scientific research? Really it's not that hard to pick up a chemistry and biology book, google search, read a paper, the writers of this show aren't ashamed to deal with science incorrectly or omitting and then say "this is fiction"?. Raise the quality of this show, people, please.

The best moments of this show are with Negan and the Marshal, I'm not surprised since Negan carries this show completely, every scene that Negan has or interacts with another character is interesting, and Maggie? Well, she lost her son, anyway.

Glenn's death over and over again, to the writers with respect, we're not stupid, we know that Glenn died, ok, we already know, those seconds of flashback scene were unnecessary and recycled with no purpose other than to accentuate Maggie's drama btw I'm already tired.

The deaths of Amaia and Tomasso, I wasn't even moved, was I supposed to feel something?

The Rat-Zombie King.

Underwhelming scene, Maggie and this weird zombie, it wasn't a zombie variant (btw what happened to the zombie variant that Negan and Maggie saw in the main series?), this scene feels wasted, surely TLoU will do better in its second season.

This is the penultimate episode and it feels wasted, nothing happens, it's so flat, so obvious that it will happen in the final episode next week; Maggie will betray Negan and he will stay with the Croat, surely he will have some morals conflicts that the writers will continue to milk, perhaps in the second season there will be a new war, The Saviors 2.0. More older and deprecated. And Maggie will continue with her conflicts with Hershel and trying to escape from Manhattan.

Don't say I didn't tell you, this tvshow is only for TWD fans, who don't exactly admire quality.

This episode is pretty good but Eli Jorne is a liar.
simianfriday17 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There are some bits here and there that I could really pick apart in this episode but I won't do that because overall it works. What I *will* do is call out Eli Jorne - the show runner - for being an absolute liar.

In the brief interview after the episode he describes the walker encounter at the end of the episode as "this like, terrifying, monstrous, creepy thing (he chuckles) made of walkers." He goes on to say: "It's something that I... I had thought of a few years before. What if, uh... what if a walker kind of stepped through one walker and then another walker stuck its head through that walker, and they got all like tangled in that way and they had to start to kind of move together? It was so fun to watch the Walker King come to life."

Uh... yeah. Sorry Eli, that wasn't your idea at all. You literally stole that idea - *INCLUDING THE NAME* - from The Last of Us Part 2. It's called a Rat King and it was first introduced in The Last of Us Part 2 back in 2020. You literally stole the idea and you *KNOW IT* that's why you chuckled when you were describing it as "your idea." Jeez man, at least be honest about your influences. It's just sad that you're trying to take credit for something creative that you had *NOTHING* to do with. What makes this worse is that when The Last of Us season 2 rolls around on HBO it'll probably showcase the Rat King and people who never played the games will think it's stealing the idea from you.

Absolutely shameless.

A Great Place to Rest
claudio_carvalho10 February 2024
Maggie, Ginny, Amaia and Tommaso escape from The Croat and the Burazi through the sewer system, which has methane. After a while, Tommaso finds two breathing apparatuses while Amaia question why their plan did not work and the Burazis seem to know that they were coming. Maggie discloses that Tommaso betrayed them and Amaia breaks with her lover. Soon they decide to rest together with a pile of walkers and Amaia is attacked. Tommaso tries to protect her and is also bitten by the walkers. Meanwhile, Negan lures Armstrong and subdues him. But he does not leave the marshal behind and brings him to a school bus and uses the medical kit to clean Armstrong's wound.

"Stories We Tell Ourselves" is a stupid episode of "The Walking Dead: Dead City". In addition to Ginny's appearance in Manhattan, we have also the following situations: (1) Maggie, Ginny, Amali and Tommaso resting from their escape in a sewer crowded of walkers. Did they need to stop in that space to rest? (2) After the deaths of Amaia and Tommaso, there is still a breathing apparatus without use, Why Maggie does not use it and avoid being dizzy and hallucinating? (3) Why Negan shows compassion with a man that wanted to deliver him to the new justice and is delaying his escape? Negan was merciless in many other situations and his attitude is difficult to be explained. This new character of the fifth episode is another difficult to be swallowed. My vote is six.

"Stories We Tell Ourselves" gives us answers and serves as a build up to the season finale, action and acting were great
Holt34419 July 2023
"Stories We Tell Ourselves" was written by Brenna Kouf and was directed by Gandja Monteiro. For this episode, both the writing and direction is quite great, mostly the direction and acting. I'm so happy the writing and dialogue haven't changed since the first episode, consistent writing and great writing at that. The whole production is impressive and I'm glad AMC brought them the budget needed, everything looks great, even the VFX. Sound design and the musical score was great, which brought suspense and tension to every scene. This episode was beautifully shot, great cinematography! The editing deserves some praise too, especially the pacing which is perfect.

Truths are unearthed and motives are revealed as Maggie, Negan and the others travel further into the city's depths.

We are now on the fifth episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City. The direction in this episode is truly terrific and I can say the same about the writing, the dialogue and the different set pieces which were written into the script. Gaius Charles is great as Perlie Armstrong, giving this raw and interesting performance with believability, the more we see and learn, the less cartoonish he becomes after his introduction in the first episode. I can now say he's a well written character which brings much to TWD: Dead City, and Gaius Charles gave the episode's best performance. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are once again terrific. Getting to know more of the backstory and what happened through flashbacks is needed to fill the gaps and explain what is exactly happening behind the scenes, I have long believed that something was off with Maggie and the more we see, the more antagonistic she seems which is a nice little twist to the beloved character. Moral choices have long been important to the franchise and seeing her character this way might feel bad for some but I enjoy it, as if you witness something like the thing she witnessed, I'm sure your psyche won't be good. We have finally got to see Maggie's trauma up close. The sewer sequence and the zombie action, unpredictable and terrifying, full of suspension. The Walker King or whatever you want to call it, it's cool but you see the inspiration from The Last of Us 2 which has a similar character called Rat King. I liked the scene though, also the whole sewer sequence. For The Croat's scenes, we get to see him converse and meet a new character which seems like the true leader of Manhattan, Lisa Emery plays the character "The Dama". Brilliant performer who does a fantastic performance. This was a good episode but serves mostly as a build up episode for the season finale.

The plot twist with Maggie is interesting, shaking up the already tumultuous relationship between the co-leads and giving purpose to Ginny in the series
fernandoschiavi16 May 2024
Since Maggie (Lauren Cohan) rescued Ginny (Mahina Napoleon) from the arena in the previous episode, the script has been working with Ginny's distrust of Maggie, both because of what Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) must have told her and the way they were approached by Maggie back in the first episode. It's interesting how this unfolds throughout this episode and how it culminates in the revelation of the plot twist at the end.

With the help Negan gave Armstrong (Gaius Charles) in the previous episode, the relationship between the two characters has been developing in a friendly way, as one needs the other to get out of there. It is revealed here that Armstrong has knowledge about the dock and the boats, which must be used in the next episode. All this development leads us to believe that the Marshall will correspond to Negan, as the character has become increasingly less resistant.

Returning to the group in the sewer, there is the discovery that Tommaso (Jonathan Higginbotham) is a traitor and was informing The Croat (Zeljko Ivanek) that the group was coming to rescue Hershel (Logan Kim). This didn't make much sense since there was no previous construction about his true motivation for acting this way. It seemed like all this justification served only to lead to his and Amaia's (Karina Ortiz) death. The death scene of the two was a bit strange, with walkers waking up in a coordinated manner, which seemed forced so that they would die quickly. Although they were two completely wasted characters, I see this from the perspective that focusing on Negan and Maggie in the final episode will be more interesting.

As for The Croat's presence in this episode, we see that he doesn't have total control. Upon arriving at that theater, we see that he is not very respected there and seems to answer to a woman (who also seems to be already familiar with Negan). We don't know if she already knew him before or if she only knows him from what The Croat said. Either way, with only one episode left in the season, we don't know if his presence will be irrelevant or if it will have a greater weight in a possible second season. Another very well-addressed point in the episode is The Croat's frustration seeing that Negan is not the same as during the Savior's time, and his "idol" seemed to really be focused on the mission and ignored everything the character built within that arena. Seeing The Croat hopeless, who had placed a lot of expectation on Negan after suffering the loss of his family, puts him disillusioned. Finally, in this episode, the moment that all fans were waiting for arrives, the fight with the fused walker. Obviously, the characterization was perfect (as always in The Walking Dead Universe), but the fight was too fast. The concept of the walker being trapped in the sewers for a long time and ending up joining with others due to the action of nature is phenomenal and could have been better exploited here. It's epic to see Maggie fighting and trying to hit each head to knock down the "King Walker."

The series' plot twist is revealed in this episode. The whole story told by Maggie is a lie. From the first episode, the series implied that Negan's wanted poster was given by the Marshalls, when in fact The Croat himself gave it to Maggie. The story of Hershel being a guarantee for New Hilltop to deliver their grains is a lie, as we are reminded of flashbacks of when Ginny was escaping from there and observed the silo full of grains. With Ginny firing the flare to get Negan's attention, Maggie is no longer just worried about saving Hershel, but also about not letting Ginny get to Negan. Inevitably, this must happen and put the two in antagonistic positions again.

The strongest point of the episode was definitely the excellent direction in the sewer scenes. The scenes convey discomfort, which shows that the direction was very effective in what it set out to do. Very immersive with the cameras shaking, focusing on the characters' breathing along with the sounds of the environment. "Stories We Tell Ourselves," despite making some questionable decisions regarding the script, is an episode that maintains the constructive line established by its predecessors. The story progresses by revealing Maggie's true intention, and this builds a climate of great curiosity to know how the season will end. Despite overdoing it with the plot twists (Tommaso's betrayal; The Croat's boss; and Maggie's lie), the plot has welcome surprises for a story that had been sounding boring in the last few episodes. We end up having a new antagonist at the 45th minute of the second half, also because I don't see the need for a second year, but the twist with Maggie is interesting, shaking up the already tumultuous relationship between the co-leads and giving purpose to Ginny in the series, now that Maggie has to save Hershel while hiding her lie. Even so, we could have seen less talk and more horror.

The Big Walker Monster
ZegMaarJus22 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This Episode begins with Maggie, Tommaso, Amaia and Ginny, they try to escape trough the sewer. Perlie points a gun on Negan, he ubducted him to a store in Manhattan. Tommaso betrayed Amaia and Maggie. Tommaso got bitten by a walker, he died afterwards. Maggie fights with the big walker monster. Maggie killed the big walker monster with a knife. Maggie is trying to find back Hershel. Solid Episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 1, this episode wasn't on the right level. I give this a 7, because there was not much action and the storyline isn't clear at this stage! Maggie has to save her son, but the rest of the storyline is a little bit blurry.

Boring story without any bigger picture in mind (so far)
andreas_schulz15 July 2023
This show is just continuing with poor storytelling like the last few seasons of TWD or the entire series of FTWD. Despite that the main cast would be great, it's just not entertaining. In episode 5 happened sort of a plot twist. But instead of enjoying it, I found myself just not caring about it due to the boring character arcs.

I honestly don't understand how you can mess up a show like this so badly only because of poor storytelling.

Despite of that it has a great main cast with already established characters from the main show, high potential and (probably still) a solid fan base. Is this some kind of strike from the writer's guild already, that made it into the show?

Mind numbing boring... This franchise needs to hang it up
pancakeman-0017417 July 2023
With only one episode left this show has been a complete let down... just like the last few years of the regular show once rick left. The story line is boring, don't care about any of the characters. Only thing good about it is the setting of New York. Unbelievable with the amount of money this franchise has made to put out such low quality entertainment. I guess with the writers strike all the writers with brains aren't working. The walking dead clearly has picked up all the below average writers that are left. I pray to god they don't make another season and just put the walking dead to rest before it becomes even more of a clown show.

Walking dead: commercial city
hockeytown96972 August 2023
After watching, I firmly believe this show was testing the limits of how many commercials can tolerated before losing viewers. Took me a very long time to finish the only (6) episodes, and the commercials were one of the reasons.

Only (6) episodes? This isn't a GoT level show that's movie quality production, tells several large stories, and fills a season in (10) episodes. Oh wait, this was only a mere (6).

Boring, slow, poor writing. The best of the best survivors once again back to making poor choices all the time.

I do not recommend this at all. The best decision made with this was not to have something like Talking Dead afterwards again.

Episode 5
bobcobb30127 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Finally, a little bit of chaos and a little bit of action and a little bit of intensity here.

Seeing those weird fishing shoot things as the key weapon is a nice touch for this show, but you would have to think someone would have stocked the guns and even all these years after the zombie apocalypse still have a good supply.

The Croat is a different kind of villain than some we have gotten on The Walking Dead in the past, but at the same time he is not as eery and violent as you would like to see. They picked the right actor for the job, but I guess the source material in the scripts is just not there.
