Mammootty shines in this technically stunning, gripping and unconventional revenge drama laced with dark humour
nidhunmoviebuff7 October 2022
While most superstars in South India struggle to surprise their audiences and have fallen into the status-quo trap, 3-time National Award Winner for Best Actor Mammootty has continuously managed to deliver roles that are far off the beaten track. In his very first production under his newly launched banner "Mammootty Kampany", the veteran thespian delivers a completely out-of-the-box revenge thriller that breaks every convention in Mollywood, giving us an immserve, brooding dark thriller that staggers with its mood-setting, buildup and its chilling conclusion.

Mammootty stars as Luke Antony, a mysterious NRI who turns up one day in a sleepy village hamlet, having seemingly lost track of his wife after they both were involved in a car accident. Hell bent on finding her or the perpetrators behind his disappearance, the stranger takes up residence in the town and eventually find out that the outwardly simple-minded villagers all have something to hide and their own secrets to protect. Director Nissam Basheer, who made a name for himself with his debut film "Kettiyollaanu Ente Maalakha (2019)", gets his casting spot on in his sophomore venture, with Jagadeesh, Bindu Panicker and Grace Antony shining in their respective roles.

The background music provided by Midhun Mukundan, the virtuoso behind the smash hit renditions of "Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana", ensnares you fully into this hypnotic world of vengeance, deceit and retribution where you are never fully aware of the motivations and moral compasses of the characters before you. The script and dialogues from Sameer Abdul will continuously keep you guessing while the eclectic camera work from Nimish Ravi doubles the impact of the gruesome proceedings on screen.

"Rorschach" might not be everybody's cup of tea given its insistence not to spoon feed the moralities and convictions of its characters to its audience and its open-endedness in terms of several character arcs. But for fans of moody, atmospheric thriller with dollops of dark humour, this is a definite must-watch and a much-needed break from the template thriller Mollywood has fallen prey to off late. After "Munnariyippu (2014)" and "Puzhu (2022)", Mammootty continues to dazzle in a grey-shaded character and one wishes that the writers in Mollywood rise up to the challenge and give him more such unconventional roles where we can see his full range on display.

Not the regular thrillers we are familiar with...
nishasuperboy7 October 2022
Usually, a revenge thriller concludes with the demise or fall of the antagonist, but this movie's plot starts from that point. Which makes this film somewhat distinct from other films.

I don't think so that there's a need to mention about Mammootty's performance in this movie, as usual he nailed. To an extent, we can call this a one-man show of Mammootty.

The making of this film is incredible, the screenplay is gripping and the transition of the character played by Bindu Panicker was something we all have never seen from her before. Glad that they didn't stuff any unnecessary songs in between to cut the flow of the movie. This is not exactly an edge-of-the-seat thriller, this is more of a slow burner.

Unconventional Psychological Revenge Triller
rajnnair12 November 2022
A thriller/mysty movie about luke filing a police compliant of his wife missing after an accident. The story progresses with new revelations and we finally get to know the last of luke and his intentions and reason for his current visit.

The story is elevated by star cast who makes it convincing and director Nissam who handles the flow in a different way. The cinematgraphy captures the natural beauty of the locale and the characters in their raw getup which eleviates the end effect. The use of English songs also makes the tratment different.

Mamooty is superb as Luke.

Jaddish was a big revelation to me in this movie, he is excellent. As far as i remember this is the first time he gets to play a role like this and he does a fantastic job. Hope he plays more such real characters in the future.

Bindu Panikkar as seetha is mindblowing.

Grace does a marvellous job, another feather in her cap after Appan.

Other significant performances that stand out are Sharafudheen & Kottayam Nazeer.

Rorschach is exactly the kind of out-of-the-box genre-blending film that gives me a big kick. One of Mammootty's most delightfully wicked performances, with ample space for dark humour and little 'mass' moments. Also, it's refreshing to see a soundtrack full of English tracks.

Luke Antony delivers a revenge which audience has to decide how much is the impact of it. One of the best Technically Brilliant movie with an open script.midhunmohanan has delivered his career best BGM. #Mammootty The Performer.

Many people may not understand or may dislike the film, but that's ok. Excellently made by nisam basheer Sameer abdul nice score by MM dop nimish👌mammukka is at peak form cast also did gud.

A must-see only because we rarely get to see such psychologically complex supernatural revenge dramas in Indian cinema.
SAMTHEBESTEST12 November 2022
Rorschach (2022) : Brief Review -

A must-see only because we rarely get to see such psychologically complex supernatural revenge dramas in Indian cinema. Those who know the meaning of 'Rorschach' know that it is a psychologically complex term, and it is very much unbelievable. Those who don't know anything about it are the happiest people on the planet. Joke aside, but seriously, this Rorschach thing will disturb your peaceful mind. Do you remember that scarecrow thing from Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins"? It was inspired by the Rorschach process, but with extreme effects. Nissam Basheer's Rorschach brings that intricate formula to Indian cinema with one of the finest actors the country has ever seen, The Mammootty. The combination is enough to get your nod for the viewing. Mammootty plays Luke Anthony, who has a mysterious past and is out on a mission to seek revenge from someone who has deeply destroyed him. The revenge is regular, just like any other film, but the process is new and extremely complex. It may bore you in the first half, but you have to be patient to realise how it is going to explain everything by the end. The director has added a couple of typical action scenes just to entertain you, but frankly, it is contrary to the kind of intelligent cinema he was trying to make. I mean, you can't expect Nolan's thriller to have an explosive action scene like a Michael Bay film, right? Nissam Basheer makes that mistake here, but hardly for 5 minutes. The predictability factors are less here because the majority of our Indian audiences are completely unaware of this theme, and moreover, the supernatural theme makes things difficult for your predictions. The performance, screenplay and music are pluses, while the direction and storyline fumble a little. Nevertheless, it's a worthwhile experience if you're bored of watching regular suspense thrillers and revenge dramas.

RATING - 6.5/10*

A big request to mamooty Kampany & Wayfarer Films : please don't give remake rights to Bollywood Kollywood or sandalwood they will spoil.

Not at all for a commercial audience who expects comedy and songs

Also it's not at all a usual screenplay with hero introduction heroine villain etc etc

This movie is for the audience who already watched different kind of scripts and screenplay in foreign movies and expecting when can we get the same feeling by seeing our stars on screen.

Bindu panicker and grace Antony acting was outstanding in this screenplay

It's time to make world to see south indian movies are giving quality scripts more than them.

Thanks to director and the whole team

Thanks for the superstar mamooty for choosing this script and giving us your best acting.

A unique genre-bender that's fairly new to Malayalam cinema! [+74%]
arungeorge1310 October 2022
Rorschach is the kind of experience that will divide viewers into two: ones who believe this revenge story doesn't need such a detailed storytelling and ones who revel in studying the finer, more minute details à la slow-burn Korean revenge dramas. It reimagines a film like The Chaser or I Saw The Devil, psychologically turns it on its head, and weaves an engaging yarn around it. The level of grey shades differ in each character, and you wouldn't believe how the script accommodates this texturing. A collaboration of the finest order between director Nissam Basheer and writer Sameer Abdul, you'll be left wholly intrigued at how each character, the protagonist included, evolves with every passing scene. The closest attempt in Indian cinema would be Sriram Raghavan's Badlapur, but it's still vastly different.

Rorschach is a genre-bender indeed and it seamlessly blends elements from various genres. There's thrills, slasher aspects, psychological warfare, dark humor, and even a tinge of the supernatural. I love how the makers use colors such as white, black, grey, and green in the film. It just has to be seen to be believed - the greyness of the unpainted house melding with that of the Mustang GT driven by Luke, the jackets worn by Luke meshing into the green, forested backgrounds, and more along those lines. Nimish Ravi's (Kurup, Luca) frames are magnificent, taking us through different doors of the protagonist's mind, and shifting perspective often. Kiran Das' edit work also needs praise, as he allows the scenes to breathe and have a natural progression. The astounding winner in the technical department, however, is composer Midhun Mukundan ( Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana), who comes up with a spectacular soundtrack that elevates the film (especially in those character transformation and procedural scenes) to another level altogether.

There's no way I can hold myself back from praising the entire cast who literally compete with each other to provide incredible performances. Leading from the front is Mammootty who continues to surprise us (at 71) and ensures his character Luke Antony is deeply studied by critics and audiences alike. Right alongside him would be Bindu Panicker who is mind-blowing in the role of a subtly fierce Seetha, and Grace Antony who plays the bold-yet-vulnerable Sujatha. It is wonderful to see Jagadeesh, Sharafudheen, and Kottayam Naseer lend gravitas to their respective roles. They're dependable performers if the script has something substantial for them.. new-gen writers, take note.

Top Notch

How can i go without commenting about this piece of art though I couldn't enjoy it!!!!!

This is a mystery thriller that really doesn't try very hard to conceal the nature of the truth. The key thing what makes this movie special is the work from the technical department team.....The direction, cinematography, editing, stunts and sound, are properly taken care of and a never before experience in Malayalam industry is created through it. There are lots of examples of film craft at work. For example there is a 5 second scene in the climax in which the director turns the interrogation room into white colour , but u have to think it out to know what he really meant..... How can I stop without mentioning the acting department.....All did their roles well but more claps to Mammookka and Bindu panicker .... Mammootty's performance underlines the fact that how unused he is as an actor (quoting his on words thechal ineem minungum). It's astonishing to see him portray a psycho person that can give you chills down your spine......

Sadly the movie was sort of under delivered for me because of the slow story telling...I don't know how others feel about it.... Do give a watch as the movie strongly demands a theatre experience.... 2.5/5.

Not Good Not Bad
Mangalassery_Neelakandan9 October 2022
This film was not as expected but it is not bad by any means. I loved the whole concept of telling a revenge story in a different manner. It sometimes resembled shutter island here and there. Mammukka was great throughout. But something was missing don't know what, maybe its because i had high hopes. Time jumps was a bit confusing at the beginning but nearing the first half it all made sense. The background score was excellent it kept maintaining the whole vibe of the film. The film starts of with an accident and from there it leads to chain of incidents that all end up being related to each other and gives Luke (Mammukka) his redemption and revenge. But there are many plot holes here and there so there is another problem. But it is entertaining and a different approach that could have been a little more better.... All i can say with out spoiling anything is that it kills an already dead person again.

Ambiguous
sreenathparakkal20 November 2022
Ambiguous plot and Ambiguous story which leads you nowhere... Watching this movie is a tedious effort with annoying unwanted high frequency bgms good enough to trigger headaches. A very slow moving movie. A very painful experience...Had to watch this complete movie as I cannot miss a moment of acting by Mamooty..Apart from that, Bindu Panicker and Jagadeesh were brilliant in their respective roles through out. The Ford Mustang too played a critical role and it was a charm to see it vrooming through the jungle. The jungle and location as a whole were exceptionally good. But yea.. The movie.. Not worth the time..

Intense Psycho Thriller!
bijupillai73-122 October 2022
RORSCHACH - Malayalam Movie

"I will hurt you for this. I don't know how yet, but give me time. A day will come when you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you'll know the debt is paid." -George R. R. Martin, A Clash of Kings

When rage consumes you at an extremely disastrous point in your life, when everything you loved and depended on is at stake or lost, when you feel you have no reason to go forward in life, revenge raises its ugly head. It is a deeply satisfying thought, but a tragedy waiting to happen and a point of no return. Unless...!

The Rorschach test, or Inkblot test, is a psychological personality test where the subjects' responses to the inkblots are evaluated. It was specially designed to look for patterns of thought disorder in schizophrenia by Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach.

Rorschah (the movie) is a psychological thriller in the Neo-noir genre. A Masterclass article on this genre says that "Neo-noir films build off classic genre tropes and update them for a new generation." This is exactly what director Nissam Basheer did for the audience of this generation, which proves why Rorschach is a global success. The whole movie is like an experiment, if you look back at it that way once the end credits start rolling. It attacks your senses in such a way that each person will perceive the movie in a different way. And that is exactly what happens in an Inkblot test! A simple story told with decent pacing goes beyond all realms of the human imagination, resulting in quite shocking revelations, jump scares, and what not! It sucks you into its whirlpool of a story pretty soon, provided you are invested and alert. If you don't, you could be swimming near the border in shark-infested waters, unsure whether the sharks or the whirlpool were a better option! Now, am I sounding conflicted?

Here, Mammootty is Luke Antony, a sombre man with a dark and mysterious past. An NRI from Dubai? With haunting and sombre English songs playing in the background, he drives into a small town in a Ford Mustang. Even that grey-colored Mustang is a character with a broody and ominous look! Mammootty is incredible. He's on fire. His recent outings like Bheeshma Parvam, Puzhu, etc. Have brought out more new faces of his that we haven't seen before. As an actor, at 71, the way he manages to always stay relevant in the industry, choosing unique scripts and giving chances to new and young directors, shows his thirst for acting that can never ever be quenched! As he himself said in an interview, it's his greed for good roles and not the money that keeps him going.

A seemingly ordinary accident that Luke gets into; Luke's missing pregnant wife and related investigation; certain questionable town folk that include an overbearing mother and her obedient sons, one of whom died and left a grieving but emotionally strong wife whose eyes convey mysteries of her own; a cop on his own personal quest into Luke's history; another person who doesn't believe a word Luke says and is out to prove his back story wrong; and many more. Such are the characters in this movie. The lines between good and bad are blurred here, and it is up to us, the audience, to figure out who is good, bad, innocent, and guilty! Luke walks into the lives of these people. Does he have an agenda? Do they all have agendas? As Luke gets to know each of the main characters in this small town, the story unravels slowly, showing us their true colors!

The movie is a trip into your psyche. Once you are in, it hooks you and won't let go until the shocking climax! And yes, that climax definitely jolted me in my seat! A certain character's transformation was astounding! Along with the psychological elements, the director plays around with a little bit of horror as well. Or did he?

By now, I believe everyone knows who the masked person is, and as Mammootty himself said, congrats to that actor for donning such a role where all you see are his two eyes! And it's his eyes that give out his identity to the audience!

Rroschach is written by Sameer Abdul, with outstanding and haunting cinematography by Nimish Ravi. It's superb writing and an excellent choice of shots. Set pieces in the classic Neo-Noir style. The music and BGM by Midhun Mukundan elevate the mood of this thriller to a whole other level. His choice of electronic music for fight scenes gave it all the more juice. Using English songs was a new and innovative thought. It sets the mood for the scenes and the movie as a whole. This is Mithun Mukundan's debut Malayalam movie and he rocked! Previously, he has primarily worked in Kannada films.

The movie is edited by Kiran Das, who has previously worked on Ishq, Joji, Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, Joseph, and Ambili. His choice of editing decisions, along with the director, made way for a near perfect thriller. The movie boasts some brilliantly choreographed high-voltage action sequences by stunt choreographer Supreme Sundar. It is mesmerizing to watch Mammootty indulge completely in the action scenes. Shaji Naduvil is the art director, and the set pieces for the movie are something to marvel at. Some odd, some strange, but all adding up to the grand scheme of things.

Standout performances all around.

Mammootty is on his A-game. His eerie smile was enough to give you goosebumps. It confuses you into thinking whether he is actually the protagonist or the antagonist! Everything is an act or borderline psycho! This man never ceases to shock and surprise us!

But it is Bindu Panicker as Seetha who steals the scenes, apart from Mammootty. Both were brilliant performances as masters of misleading the audience. Bindu Panicker's cold demeanor at times will give you the chills.

Grace Antony's Sujatha is awesome. She gives a stellar performance as a widow who doesn't give up on life and stands her ground in front of her mother-in-law, Seetha, as well as Luke. Her scenes with Mammootty are simply brilliant. Grace will go a long way towards entertaining us in every way, be it comedy, drama, or extremely serious roles like this one.

Jagadish, as the police officer who smells something fishy about Luke and gets the ball rolling for his own investigation, is in a different ball game altogether. This is a new and unique Jagadish and I would love to see him in these kinds of roles more often.

A nosey Sharaffudin, with a different get-up and look, is very convincing as someone who is steadfast in exposing Luke as he feels everything about him is mysterious. He is a very good actor. Sanju Sivram, who plays Anil, is excellent as Seetha's hot-headed but obedient son. Someone who is ready to go to any length for their mother. Sometimes too far!

Nazeer gets to do a rare and memorable performance as Shashankan. He is also a man with a motive, but struggling within as he borders between good and evil.

Mani Shornur as Balan gave a natural performance and I'm glad to see him in this movie.

Directed by Nissam Basheer, this is his second movie after the successful "Kettyolaanu Ente Malakha." There too, he has some definite messages for us. In terms of plot and genre, these two films are diametrically opposed. That itself shows his immense talent and capability as a director. Congrats to Nissam. I'm looking forward to his next.

Produced by Mammootty under the banner of Mammootty Kampany, Rorschach is a must watch. Give it your attention for the first few minutes, and then you're in for the ride. An awesome theatre experience. But if you missed it in the theaters, then definitely watch it when it comes on OTT.

Such rare gems from the Malayalam film industry shouldn't be overlooked!

Admirable
Ansango10 December 2022
Rorschach is what it is mostly because of strong writing, incredible Mammootty and impressive direction. The blend of perplexing mystery with supernatural elements is flawless. The sound design plays a great role in elevating its mystifying atmosphere. Although its leisurely pace in the middle does get a tad bit boring, its enigmatic tone manages its grip firmly. The masterful structure of its storytelling takes the cake of being a great addition to an already immaculate thriller.

This film reminded me a lot of I Saw The Devil. The revenge there was mostly physical and achieved with a lot of grisly violence. In contrast, the revenge in Rorschach entails the supernatural realm and is achieved mostly through psychological manners.

The third act is where it starts to lose its grasp and starts to turn itself into a standard affair and while the final act doesn't ruin the film, it certainly does weaken the overall impact slightly. Rorschach is an excellent film which demands tons of patience and is mostly rewarded nicely barring some hiccups here and there.

Honestly surprised with all the positive reviews!!!???
bloomquick11 November 2022
I mean, WTF! There are some people who want boast intelligence by unnecessarily dragging and complicating a simple story. And this people call brilliance!!! I will give credit for one thing though, I could neither get up and leave nor sit and watch this painful bs of a movie! Literally between the sea and the devil kind of experience. I don't want to give away any spoilers. I honestly feel bad for Mammooka. His earnestness is misused by these so called new gen "buddhijeevis", like the audience don't have any brains at all and will eat what ever they cook up in the name of creativity. Pathetic!

I have never seen such an amazing film
riyachaudhary-0955631 October 2022
Really I was shocked and surprised. OMG!!! What a movie. I have a very serious question to the makers of this film " Why didn't you guys dubb this film to hindi?" . I am sure that nobody can remake this film. Acting of every artists, Cinematography, Bgm, Action choreography, each and everybody working behind this film done an amazing job. And I have no words for acting of Mammootty sir. You are true Gem of Indian cinema. I would say that if we take 5 best actors in the world, Mammootty sir must be there. Above all the story telling of this film is really a change for indian cinema. May be in the coming future many directors will think to make a film like this. And I really appreciate the director and script writer for giving us such a wonderful film.

A breath of fresh air to the overtold revenge thriller story
akhil02717 October 2022
Thanks to writer Sameer Abdul and director Nisam Basheer for this. I was tired of the dark thrillers in Mollywood but you guys gave a new face to the genre.

It's a very slow paced movie and the first 20 minutes are confusing and the story gains shape from there on.

The cast gave their everything to make the movie work. What a comeback by the legendary Bindu Panicker. She plays one of the finest female character ever in Malayalam cinema. It's amazing how Mammootty still explores the actor in him and remains a superstar. Although, the superstar scenes could've been avoided. Also, Mammootty should've played an older guy. It was a bit weird to see him as the husband of a young woman.

The climax is a bit convoluted but still good.

P. S: It's a really slow movie, so if you're someone who's easily bored, you better avoid it. But you'll be missing one of the finest thriller in Mollywood.

A good film but not everyone's cup of tea
seljojoseph10 October 2022
RORSCHACH

A slow-paced drama thriller from Nissam Basheer. First of all its a slow film. A revenge story. The film on the technically an outstanding film. The background scores, the song, the soundmixing were all nice. The visuals were amazing. When looked upon the acting base everyone did their best especially Bindhu Panikkar she was just amazing and Mammokka's acting was amazing some scenes were creepy as gell The film can be a dual perspective film - A psychological thriller, or a horror drama thriller. The action sequences were breathtaing. Story was also a good one, a revenge story. But the main drawback is the pace itself. It's not everyone's cup of tea. Slow pace may be a bit laggy for some, mainly the first half was a bit too long, but intresting. Unveiling the main plot, it was long, but second half was good. Overall its a good theatre experience but not everyone's cup of tea.

An unique revenge drama.
chand-suhas15 October 2022
A Megastar shedding his image entirely to select a script like this probably only happens in Malayalam film industry. Rorschach is about a mysterious man from Dubai Luke Antony (Mammootty), settling in rural Kerala and complaints to the police about his missing wife Sofiya. Nobody including police have any information about Luke, definitely not more than what he has told everyone about himself. But the reason for him settling in there is far deeper than his namesake complaint about his missing wife. He is more focused on one family who had lost their son in an accident and his widow running their factory on her own. Obviously Luke's intention is revenge but this isn't some routine revenge drama and this is what makes this movie all the more special.

With a tricky initial 30-35mins which demanded more patience to get immersed into the narrative, the patience really paid off with an awesome interval block. But it was the main reveal in the second half that made this a paisa vasool watch. More than physical revenge, the theme is of destroying another's happiness. So the action scenes serves as circumstantial without taking away much from the story whilst serving up as a treat for the Megastar fans. Another standout performer was Bindu Panicker as Seetha. The scenes where past and present merge is beautifully edited, needless to say editing in this earns all the brownie points.

This is one of those films where highlighting the core plot acts as a major spoiler. This is best enjoyed without reading much about the main plot. Definitely recommended.

Technical Brilliance and Mammooka.
Couziambatman8 October 2022
I will keep this review short and simple so that you can enjoy watching this movie. The technical side of the movie is top notch and deserves every praises they get. Dont wanna spoil the story so all Iam gonna say is that the story in paper is simple and basic but the way they treated it is unique and thrilling. Acting department has done such a good performance. Mammooka have done very well even without lot of in the face dailogues he have made the character his own , all the others have also done really good in the part of acting. Sound design is good , the director has done pretty well and at the end watch the movie for the efforts they have put on it to make such a unique experience for the audiences.

A mystery thriller that flips horror tropes
Jithindurden15 October 2022
When a Malayalam filmmaker got inspired by Scandinavian investigation movies and South Korean revenge movies, this happened. The concept is really intriguing, flipping off a stereotypical horror movie trope and turning it into a mystery thriller. The film is technically sound with great sound design and cinematography. But the slow-paced narrative starts feeling a little bit weird when it feels like too many twists are revealed even before the interval and then more twists come in. In the end, it felt like it should have been either shorter and crisper or a longer mini-series with enough character development for each of the characters. Even with all these problems, I still felt that this is a solid film. The most notable aspect is the amazing performance of each of the cast members. Actors like Bindhu Panicker, Jagadeesh and Kottayam Naseer are always cast in stereotypical roles and thus underutilized. Here they shine in something different than what they usually do. Especially Bindhu Panicker who starts off in the film as a stereotypical mother character and then the changes in the character's actions and motivations are reflected in a very effective way without being loud. The box office success of this movie is kind of surprising for me and makes me hopeful about films that would try to be different. Even if it has to make some compromises like this, the commercial milieu being attached to these types of films is better than many others.

didn't turn out to be exciting
ngandacinema12 November 2022
Rorschach was the movie we were so eager to watch due to its poster and trailer. But it was unnecessarily complex, thus didn't turn out to be exciting

Delicious -Grace Antony (playing Sujatha) stole the show. She's been challenging herself lately by picking versatile roles; in Rorschach, she was fierce, firm, aggressive, and not cut out for games, we loved it!

-The VFX team, what an impeccable job! The effects done on Dileep (Sujatha's husband) were impressive; they produced the intimidating mood that the film needed -Color grading, set design, and make-up teams worked in sync to achieve a nice pale palette for a somber atmosphere

Bland -What does Rorschach mean??? It was alarming that the movie didn't explain what this concept is about; we actually had to look it up ourselves -Luke is a regular businessman yet he was skilled in martial arts???

We didn't get to see Luke, the character, but rather Mammootty, the superstar. As always, Mammooty didn't let go of his stardom to indulge himself in the role, very frustrating -The story could have been told in a much simpler way; there were many layers that could have been truncated. Several suspenseful moments attracted our attention but then were brieft -In the end, there wasn't much to take out from the story as it focused on the usual vengeance theme, paying evil with evil.

A Seat Edging Captivating Psyco Thriller

*** Rorschach Movie Review ****

Directed by Nissam Basheer starring Mammootty in lead role... Also starring Grace Antony Sharfuddin , Bindu Panicker, Kottayam Naseer.

Penned by Sameer Abdul.

Plot of the Movie.

An accident happens, and a person comes to the Police Station. He introduced himself as Luke Antony played by Mammootty, registers a missing compliant of his wife. Initially it seems to be a genuine but thereafter a sacks of mystery is being observed in Luke Antony and thereafter the story takes a turn..

Various psycho crime thriller had been watched but Rorschach stands out differently... Vengeance also had an another form was being realised after watching the movie...

The screenplay designed in a slow paced but Nissam Basheer knows the pulse of the audience as his deftly execution resulted in the seat edge thrilling experience at the big screen..

Cinematography by Nimish Ravi was astounding. Night sequences was captivating.

Crisp editing by Kiran Das.

Music and BGM by Midhun Mukundan was another highlighting factor. As mentioned earlier, a slow paced story narration but with slicky BGM raised the tempo of the movie. An english song when a serious sequence is portrayed was a different experience to watch.

Mammootty the man who polishes always himself, Rorschach is yet another movie for making him again a polished actor. A mystery, deviousness man but masked with a person who undergone a severe mental trauma, these varied characteristics was well articulated.. A new Mammootty was seen at the big screen.

Jagdish, Kottayam Naseer, Bindu Panicker whom we had seen in various comic characters & made us laugh, here they gave a stellar performance.

Grace Antony had also a stellar performance..

Rorschach,. A must watch theatrical movie 🔥🔥🔥

Not everyone's cup of tea!

Let me come straight to the point, this movie is a wannabe Hollywood neo noir & I must admit that the technical department (cinematography & visual design) is top notch though.

It's a mix of different genres & this can be very confusing for the audience. The movie is slightly dragged & could have been cut short. Some of the scenes were unnecessary, like the maid in Luke's house at night. There's plenty of dark humour & I personally enjoyed this part. Coming to the background score this is one aspect which I disliked in most of the movie; it simply didn't go well with the village atmosphere. Like seriously an English song in a typical Indian village?

Bindu Panicker is back with a bang & so is Mammootty with his negative shades. Kottayam Naseer & Jagadish did their part well, so did Grace Antony.

If you've watched plenty of Hollywood neo noir then give this a miss as there is a certain point where the movie gets boring.

Considering this is Mammootty's first production venture, the team did a great job in bringing something different.

Highly pretentious and sub-standard movie
mohaniyer-6903228 December 2022
God alone knows what the scriptwriter was high on when he wrote the script for this confused and pompous apology of a movie.

This is one of those so-called new age wannabe experimental movies which like to call themselves as neo-noir psychological thrillers. Actually it is neither psychological nor a thriller. There are gaping holes in the narrative and nothing makes sense.

The cherry on top of the irritating pretentiousness of the movie is the English song-track which is belted out throughout. Now the said song-track will make sense if the movie was a high octane thriller shot in a city, replete with car and motor bike chases. However it is entirely set in rural areas and forests, which adds several fake notes to the overall experience.

The makers of the movie were confused whether to make it a psychological or supernatural thriller; so they compromised by adding half-baked elements of both. Many things in the film make no sense at all. That can be ignored if they were minor aspects of the story; but these are major plot holes.

For example, the lead character's wife is murdered in Dubai and he comes to India to take revenge. But he learns that the murderer has already died and his family is living in a village inside a forested area. So he stages a car accident and lies to the police that his wife was in the car with him and she has vanished. And the murderer's father gives him company in his trips to the police station etc. Finally the father ends up selling his half finished house to the lead. But this is too big a coincidence to be digested.

The police is shown to be completely dumb. If they had done even a basic check in the background of the lead character, they would have discovered that his wife was murdered in a foreign country. But they do absolutely nothing.

Everything in the movie happens because the script-writer wanted it to happen that way; but such things will never happen in real life, nor will real people behave in the way as shown in the movie.

Mamooty looks old and jaded. Though he still has tremendous screen presence, it is obvious that he is wearing a wig and has dyed rest of his facial hair jet black. That looks incongruous with his sagging features. It would have been much better if he had been given a natural look with salt and pepper hair and moustache. They have tried to make a 71 year old man look like a 50 year old and failed miserably.

The fight sequences look phony and staged. Mamooty just has to move his hands and people go flying effortlessly.

And the big payoff at the end of the movie turns out to be a damp squib. When the murderer is already shown to have died in an accident, nobody would want to stay back and expend considerable time, money and energy in tormenting his family or destroying his reputation. But that is exactly what the lead character claims to have done. And somehow that is a big deal and he is an awesome person.

Quality stuff

Quality making with some stunning performances. This movie was a new experience in terms of technicality and performances which makes it a mind blowing theatre watch. Mammootty and Bindhu Panicker shines in this totally experimental with less spoon feeding thriller package. Every actors did justice to their role.

Director Nisam Basheer after his debut movie Ketyolanu ente malakha made an entire shift of genre and succeeded 100%.

Screenplay is the backbone of this beautiful movie and the writer Sameer Abdul had done a brilliant job.

From the very first scene it was evident that how much effort the entire cast and crew put into this movie. Expecting more movies like this in Malayalam.

Psychological revenge
firoz-aboobaker10 July 2023
A revenge drama but taking revenge psychologically, which is something Malayalam industry or even Indian Industry have never made. The top notch acting by Mammooty, Sharafuddeen and Bindu Panicker nailed the dark thriller without making it a cliched dark comedy. Though you feel the humor in some places. The BGM is another thing helped the movie to get its complete affect.

The voice over by the characters at different times make the story interesting and intriguing.

The story starts with a man coming to the police station in an unknown village to complain about his missing wife after a car accident. Then he starts living there searching for his wife.
