Romancing the Mummy.
After concluding April with discussions of Ciarán Foy’s Eli (listen), a horror version of The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, and the pseudo-sequel to Videodrome in David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ (listen), we’re kicking off May with a revisit to one of our favorite years for cinema: 1999! The film we’ve selected is Stephen Sommer‘s action-adventure-horror-romantic-comedy The Mummy!
In the film, adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) travels to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with librarian Evelyn “Evy” Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and her older brother Jonathan (John Hannah). While there, they accidentally awaken Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a cursed high priest-turned-invincible mummy, and must stop him before he sacrifices Evy in an attempt to resurrect his former lover (Patricia Velásquez).

Actor Ryan Corr revealed his greatest fear while he looked back on his experience on set for his film Sting in his new uInterview.
“The premise is, a giant alien spider from outer space finds its way into a New York City apartment, and more particularly to a young Charlotte, who she befriends, and as she sort of raises this spider and it grows,” Corr told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “The problems in the nuclear family and the issues that are possibly in the relationships there start to grow as well. They have to come together to fight this alien spider and the elements that are coming up in the family.
Of his character Ethan, Corr said, “Ethan is Charlotte’s stepfather and Heather’s husband. For me, this film was an homage to stepparents. I’ve grown up myself with two wonderful stepparents, and I always thought the dynamic was really interesting.

Concert film Suga – Agust D Tour ‘D-Day’ The Movie from Trafalgar Releasing took in $990k for Saturday alone, rounding out the North American box office top ten — testament to the power of concert films post-Covid and the enduring popularity of the K-Pop powerhouse. The band is currently on hiatus as members entered military service required in South Korea. But Suga, the second oldest, got in one last solo concert in Seoul last year. It was released into theaters globally for two playdates on April 10 and April 13, for a cume of $2.2 million.
The film played at 723 locations Saturday in the U.S. ($910.3k) and 64 in Canada ($80.6k). (Total screens 787.)
The showtimes were limited, mostly to one 7 pm screening, although some theaters had more than one. Additional screenings continue at select locations through April 21.
North America Imax grosses for Suga were $705k — a notable 32% of the cume to date.

Alex Garland’s “Civil War” opened to an estimated $25.7 million this weekend, nearly double the best wide opening for any previous A24 title. It’s also about $7 million more than the combined openings last weekend for “Monkey Man” (Universal) and “The First Omen” (Disney).
Despite its B- Cinemascore, the near-future domestic dystopia came in over 25 percent better than projections. The A24 brand, the indefatigable war theme, advance interest (including a widely covered SXSW premiere), topicality, originality, IMAX sales, and mostly positive reviews propelled it to success.
With a reported production cost of at least $50 million, and uncertainty about foreign interest (initial grosses incomplete), it will need to be more than an initial sensation. Even so, particularly with likely significant post-theatrical interest, it initially appears that A24’s risk will pay off.
An opening on this scale for a non-franchise independent title only adds to A24’s bona fides. In recent...

April has been a slower month compared to March, but if nothing else, this weekend saw a popular indie studio break a few personal records with what might have been a controversial release. Read on for the weekend box office report.
A24 released Alex Garland‘s fourth feature as a director, “Civil War,” starring Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Maura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nick Offerman, and Jesse Plemons, into 3,838 theaters on Friday – the studio’s widest release ever. It came into the weekend with a reported production budget of $50 million – another record for the studio – and mostly decent reviews with 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, following a premiere at the SXSW Film and TV Festival.
It was able to make $2.9 million in Thursday and earlier previews, which were compiled into the movie’s $10.8 million opening day, and it then ended with an estimated $25.7 million to take first place on opening weekend.

Sasquatch Sunset directors Nathan and David Zellner always wondered what these hairy giants do when they’re not walking – the only Bigfoot footage available has been a minute of a supposed Sasquatch wandering in the northern California woods. They decided to flesh that out in unique dialogue-free comedic imagining of the creatures’ daily life – eating, fighting, etc. Stars Jesse Eisenberg, Riley Keough, Christophe Zajac-Denek and Nathan Zellner are unrecognizable as the hairy tribe of four that entranced Sundance (see Deadline review). Bleecker Street is opening the film, written by David Zellner, executive produced by Ari Aster, in 9 theaters in New York, LA, San Francisco and Austin, ahead of a big jump to about 800 screens next week.

Writer/Director Kiah Roache-Turner wears his influences on his sleeves in the throwback creature feature Sting. A mysterious object from outer space crashes into a New York apartment amidst a raging blizzard, where the mysterious spider inside it is discovered by a girl named Charlotte. Charlotte dubs her new pet Sting, unaware that it’s not from Earth and comes with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. As the spider’s reign of terror increases, so does Roache-Turner’s commitment to capturing the mayhem through stunning practical creature effects, which makes this film worth the price of admission.
It’s not just the spider’s pet name, derived from The Hobbit, or the effects by the 5-time Academy Award® Winner Wētā Workshop, led by Creative Director Richard Taylor, that calls the work of Peter Jackson to mind here. It’s also the film’s sense of humor, from the opening...

A killer spider terrorises a New York apartment building in a tonally messy horror with some great creature effects. Our review of Sting:
Odd name for a killer spider movie, Sting. For that we can thank Tolkien-loving 12 year-old Charlotte (Alyla Browne) who chooses it as the nickname for the arachnid she finds scuttling around her dimly-lit New York apartment building. Sweeping the critter into a jar and intent on keeping it as a pet, Charlotte is blissfully unaware that Sting is capable of escaping from its glass prison and, as it dines on other living things roaming around the building, will soon grow to a frightening size.
Written and directed by Australian filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner, Sting is an eclectic mash-up of styles and influences. Its snowbound apartment setting, every floor filled with eccentrics, immediately recalls Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro’s Delicatessen. Roache-Turner seems to relish in the little...

In “Sting,” a giant-spider-grows-in-Brooklyn thriller that’s cheeky, bloody, and (most important) very gooey, Sting is the name given by Charlotte (Alyla Browne), a precocious tween, to the elegant two-inch-long black spider that becomes her pet (she keeps it in a jar and feeds it bugs). Yet given how much slaughter is caused by this omnivorous arachnid, which grows bigger and bigger with each feeding, the moniker turns out to be a major understatement. It’s as if Jason Vorhees were named “Paper Cut.”
“Sting” is a wee sliver of a horror film that’s tongue-in-cheek but also quite matter-of-fact about its creature-feature jokiness. It’s the monster-bug thriller as light dessert. The spider, it turns out, is an alien — after a gruesome prologue with lots of whooshing “Evil Dead” camera movement, the movie cuts to four days earlier, when a fiery meteorite crashes through an apartment roof in South...

Whoo-ee! I love me a scary spider movie. And like an intricate, hypnotically inviting web, no two spider movies are alike. There are funny spider movies. There are campy spider movies. There are metaphorical spider movies about the unraveling mind, and there are even spider movies so filled with little creepy crawlers that you walk around your house with a slipper in your hand for days after watching them. And what luck that we have Two scary spider movies in such short order, both entirely definitely breeds of hair-raising horror.
Sébastien Vaniček’s Infested, coming hot on the heels of Kiah Roche-Turner’s hilariously Sting, is the exact opposite of a comforting watch. It reminds you that spiders are t e r r i f y i n g, that they thrive (and hide) in every dark corner of this word, and that so many of them (too many of them!

From Arachnophobia to Itsy Bitsy, from Tarantula to Abyssal Spider, killer spider movies have always been in style. But there’s something special about the newest eight-legged offering, Sting. Sting is everything that’s amazing about creature features.
Sting is about a young girl named Charlotte (Alyla Browne from the unfortunate Children of the Corn remake) who spends her time drawing comics and creeping into her neighbors’ apartments by crawling through the apartment building’s air ducts. One day while doing the latter, she comes across a cute little spider which she takes home and names Sting – not after the rock star or the wrestler, but after the short sword in The Hobbit. Yes, Charlotte is a dork.
But Sting isn’t a normal, run-of-the-mill spider. It’s an alien spider that crashed on Earth in a meteorite. First,...

Box office preview: Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ will try its best not to divide the moviegoing nation
After a quieter April opening weekend, we get a slightly busier one with one high profile wide release and a handful of smaller releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big release of the weekend is “Civil War,” filmmaker Alex Garland‘s fourth feature film as a director, and one that is reportedly A24’s biggest budget production, reportedly costing $50 million. Set in a dystopian war-torn future America, the movie stars Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny from “Priscilla” as two wartime journalists heading to D.C. to interview the President (Nick Offerman), who is about to be deposed by a group of opposing rebels. The movie also stars Jesse Plemons, Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
Garland established himself as a screenwriter with films like Danny Boyle‘s “28 Days Later” and the 2012 “Dredd” movie starring Karl Urban, but his 2015 directorial debut “Ex Machina...

2024 is shaping up to be a big year for bugs and Kiah Roache-Turner’s monster spider movie Sting is here to make your skin crawl! We’ve already got 2 sandworm movies on the books, not to mention some colossal-sized critters in Godzilla x Kong, but the creepy crawlies are once again having their day in the dark corners of the horror-sphere. It wasn’t long ago that we heard rumblings of a James Wan/Christopher Landon Arachnophobia reboot, and here we are now with two new spider movies about to infest your local theatre. While I’ve heard that one of those spider movies is intense and unrelenting (I’ll believe it when I see it!), Sting is fun, and funny, and loaded top to bottom with A+ practical effects...

Any creature feature worth its salt will, predictably, generally follow a well-worn path and set of rules plucked from classics like “Jaws,” “Jurassic Park,” or any number of sequels to “Alien.” A similar structure exists within any memorable creature thriller and the challenge a filmmaker must face in trying to elevate what is essentially a well-known edifice into something more than ordinary. At a minimum, those same-ish results habitually wind up on the safe side of a fun, mindless viewing experience, with the unwritten rule that the slightest mark of an acceptable monster outing shouldn’t be anything one needs to process for longer than a millisecond.

Sting releases April 12th, 2024.
I love a good creature-feature. Low budget? No problem! Campy and over-the-top? Bring it on! The draw is even stronger when that creature is something that exists in the real-world. Whether it be a larger than life alligator, a drugged-up black bear or — in this case — a spider. Granted, the titular creature in Kiah Roache-Turner’s Sting no ordinary Earth-born spider, but she’s a spider nonetheless. These types of movies aren’t always good, but they’re (for the most part) entertaining. This time… it’s both.

Review: Filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner is best known for his wild and crazy zombie movies Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, which blended inspiration from Mad Max and Dawn of the Dead to tell the story of a unique zombie outbreak where the living dead have flammable blood and exhale methane. Showrunner Todd Komarnicki (Sully) created the series, which comes from MGM+ Studios and executive producers Kearie Peak and Lighthouse Productions’ Michael Phillips and Juliana Maio. Earth Abides is slated to premiere on MGM+ in late 2024.
When a plague of unprecedented virulence sweeps the globe, the human race is all but wiped out. In the aftermath, as the great machine of civilization slowly and inexorably breaks down, only a few shattered survivors remain to struggle against the slide into extinction.

Watch out for this Spidey. There's a new fan film in the works launching soon titled The Spider, described as a "horror take on Spider-Man." Not to be confused with the other two actual spider horror films opening soon - Sting and Infested. Written and directed by Andy Chen, an up-and-coming young filmmaker who goes under the name "Locust Garden" on social media, the short film features a legit cast. Chandler Riggs (seen in "The Walking Dead" & "A Million Little Things") stars as Spider-Man, along with Caylee Cowan, Matthew Vorce, Kyra Gardner, Holgie Forrester, Carl Addicott, David Rice, Andrew Hernon, Kealani Kitaura, Ronan Arthur & Ben Thomas. With a score by Alexander Taylor. It is an entirely fan-made, non-profit film inspired by Spider-Man. Our pals over at Live for Film also point out that there is actually a "fully mutated Man-Spider" from the comics, and this short also seems similar to...

Fowler started Brazilian jiu-jitsu training during Covid.
“When the pandemic hit, I had nothing to do,” he said during a January 2023 interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show. “I was bored, and I always wanted to try martial arts.”
On jiu-jitsu he said, “It’s a beautiful sport. It’s gruesome, but it’s so beautiful.”

"If it wasn't a needle, what caused it?" Oh hell no!! Shudder has revealed the official US trailer for another extremely scary spider horror movie titled Infested - this one is from France. It's also arriving this spring, around same time as the other spider horror movie called Sting. Residents of a rundown French apartment building battle against an army of deadly, rapidly reproducing spiders. This is the film that supposedly used actual, real spiders to film with - though clearly there's a point where they become CGI and this gets even crazier. Infested weaves its eerie tale on Shudder starting April 26th. Starring Théo Christine, Finnegan Oldfield, Jérôme Niel, Sofia Lesaffre, and Lisa Nyarko. Yeah I'm way, way...

Not long after hunting a monstrously-sized spider in Kiah Roache-Turner’s upcoming horror thriller Sting, Alyla Browne is hanging out with Sonic the Hedgehog and his fast-moving friends. The up-and-coming actress revealed she’s playing Maria Robotnik for Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3. According to Sonic the Hedgehog lore, Maria Robotnik is Professor Gerald Robotnik’s granddaughter and Doctor Robotnik’s cousin.
While there’s a chance Browne is playing a different character named Maria, I’ll bet my collection of original Sonic the Hedgehog Sega Genesis cartridges she’s the character who debuted in Sonic Adventure 2. On social media, Browne posted a picture of herself wearing a puffy bodybag-looking jacket while sitting in an actor’s chair from the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 set. "What kind of spider are we talking about here?" "A big one." Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for an insanely scary, unsettling horror movie called Sting, arriving in theaters this April. This Australian production comes from a filmmaker named Kiah Roache-Turner, and it looks as scary as any spider movie can. Sting spins a web of thrilling terror when 12-year-old Charlotte’s pet spider rapidly transforms into a giant flesh-eating monster, forcing the young girl to fight for her family's survival. The freaky little creature actually comes from outer space, an alien spider that befriends this little girl before it becomes an enormous killer. This stars Alyla Browne, Ryan Corr, Penelope Mitchell, Jermaine Fowler, Silvia Colloca, Danny Kim, Noni Hazlehurst, and Robyn Nevin. This isn't the only extremely scary spider movie this year - there's also a French horror called Vermin that apparently used real spiders while shooting.

Up next from Wyrmwood writer/director Kiah Roache-Turner is a shark attack survival movie titled Beast of War, and Variety brings news that the shark horror movie has been acquired for distribution by Signature Entertainment for the U.K. and Ireland, and Well Go USA for North America.
The period Wii film is loosely based on real-life events.
Beast of War “follows a warship carrying hundreds of Australian soldiers across the Timor Sea to the frontline of WWII. Suddenly, Japanese fighter jets scream out of the sky, and within minutes the ocean becomes a hell of steel, fire, oil and blood. While a handful of soldiers build a makeshift raft from floating debris as they cling to their lives, their biggest battle is yet to come. In the dark below, the ultimate apex predator — a great white shark — hunts in the wreckage and is drawn to the smell of fresh blood in the water.

Kiah Roache-Turner is slowly making his way through the food chain, folks. Moving on from all manner of undead creatures (Two Wyrmwood films and Nekrotronic) one of our favorite Australian directors has moved into the natural world. Their latest creature horror, the crap-your-pants-scary spider movie Sting, is due out from Well Go USA in April. I know from quick messaging with Kiah recently about Sting that he's been working on pre-production for his next film, Beast of War, a WWII Shark Thriller (two thirds of the way through what I'm now calling their Australian Food Chain Trilogy). Today Variety has word that it has pre-sold to Signature Entertainment for the U.K. and Ireland, and Well Go again for North America. Well Go knows...

Christmas weekend at the box office was looking potentially disastrous for some movies, with no fewer than nine wide releases over the extended four-day period. Wyrmwood Road of the Dead and Wyrmwood: Apocalypse director Kiah Roache-Turner started the year by wrapping production on the spider-themed horror film Sting, and now Deadline reports that he’s moving on to a different “nature run amok” story, a World War II-set shark thriller called Beast of War.
Roache-Turner is reuniting with Cornerstone, the company that’s handling worldwide sales and distribution for Sting, on this new project. Cornerstone will be presenting Beast of War to potential buyers at the upcoming American Film Market.
The script has the following synopsis: 1942. A warship carries hundreds of Australian soldiers across the Timor Sea to the frontline of WW2. Suddenly, Japanese fighter jets scream out of the sky, and within minutes the ocean becomes a hell of steel, fire, oil, and blood. With the vessel destroyed, a handful of soldiers build a makeshift raft from floating debris as they cling to their lives.
