“3 Body Problem” will end with its third season on Netflix.
The sci-fi adaptation, which launched its first season in March, is officially set to air second and third installments before coming to a close, offering clarity to the streamer’s previous statement that it would return “with all-new episodes to take viewers through the full journey of this epic saga.”
The news was announced during the show’s Netflix Fysee panel on Friday.
The update comes less than a month after “3 Body Problem” was renewed mid-May during Netflix’s upfront presentation in New York City. However, the extent of that renewal was previously unclear.
“We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion,” creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo said in a joint statement at the time. “Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy,...

However, the sci-fi fantasy genre TV shows are proving to be the biggest ones this year with the release of shows like Fallout and 3 Body Problem. The sci-fi fans are having a great year and if TV shows weren’t enough we also got Dune: Part Two this year which is the most successful film 2024 so far. “It is something that haunts all production designers; it’s something that requires a lot of hard work,” admits four-time Emmy-winning production designer Deborah Riley (“Game of Thrones”) about striving for authenticity and realism, ensuring the look and feel of a series never comes across as too staged or artificial. “It’s layers and layers and layers, and oftentimes it comes down to [for example] a set painter, who will just touch all of those props and touch up all of the walls, and just make sure they feel a little bit lived-in. You know, a bit of a layer of dust over everything helps,” Riley laughs during our recent webchat, adding that, “you’ve got to look at everything and squint slightly and add yourself. You never want anything to feel or look like a prop or dressing. It’s got to feel like someone to put it there for a reason.

Given the massive amount of resources that Netflix committed to "3 Body Problem" (not to mention the lengthy stay at the top of Netflix's Top 10 lists since its debut), it was likely only a matter of time before the streaming giant made the obvious official. That's finally happened, and now fans of one of the nerdiest, densest, and most existential sci-fi book series ever written can look forward to showrunners and co-creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo's take on what's widely considered to be the best book of the alien-invasion trilogy.
Season 2 of "3 Body Problem" is now confirmed to be in the works, as Netflix announced in a social media post on Twitter (only literal extraterrestrials would ever call it "X") earlier this afternoon. “Storytelling, and the words that they put in their actors’ mouths. They’re just glorious,” declares Liam Cunningham when giving high praise to the creators of Netflix’s hit sci-fi drama “3 Body Problem.” The series was created by multiple Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” duo David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, who serve as co-creators and producers with writer/producer Alexander Woo (“True Blood”). For our recent webchat, Cunningham (who worked with Benioff and Weiss as Ser Davos Seaworth on “Game of Thrones”) adds, “it’s just wonderful! They aim so high with difficult storytelling that most normal people wouldn’t attempt to go near.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

When you hear that D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are behind a series, you sit up and take notice. The recent Netflix drama 3 Body Problem had all the suspense and drama we've come to expect from the pair, as a team of scientists and a detective investigate the strange deaths of scientists around the world.
Based on the novel The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin, the show scored 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and topped Netflix's global top 10 for 3 weeks. But with only 8 episodes, this uber-bingeable show has already come to an end for many fans.
The good news, a new K-drama landing on April 26th is the perfect show to stream if you loved 3 Body Problem and can't believe it hasn't been renewed for Season 2.
What would you do if there were only 200 days left until the apocalypse?
That is the question the citizens of Korea face in this heart-pounding show.

From a certain point of view, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare star Eiza González may have just played the original real-life Bond girl.
Ungentlemanly Warfare, the first of González’s three Guy Ritchie movies to hit theaters, is loosely based on the recently declassified Operation Postmaster, chronicling Winston Churchill’s Special Operations Executive (Soe) and their covert mission to neutralize Nazi Germany’s U-boats during World War II. The efforts of these unauthorized commandos and spies helped change the course of the war, allowing the United States to then join the European Theater of Operations in 1942.
In the action-thriller, González plays Marjorie Stewart, a talented soldier-spy who’s equally gifted as a performer. Together with Babs Olusanmokun’s Heron, Stewart set up shop at the Nazi-frequented island of Fernando Po, where they communicated the Nazis’ latest comings and goings to their fellow Soe personnel, including a group of commandos that...

Emilia Clarke’s arc in Game of Thrones has been a subject of both fury and annoyance over the years — and for good reason. Be it her manipulative benevolence, or little by little transformation into the Mad Queen, or her full-blown turn to tyranny — Danaerys Targaryen’s journey has been a rollercoaster ride and her character remains an enigma whose first moment is as memorable as her last, and every second in between is just as remarkably imprinted on the audience’s memory.

It is one such moment that had Emilia Clarke breathing a sigh of relief while filming a particularly seductive scene on the show.

Although they are friendly at first, the San-Ti soon realizes that humans are liars and not to be trusted. The realization of humanity’s true nature leads them to decide they are bugs and need to be conquered. This Netflix hit series adapts Chinese author Liu Cixin’s first book, The Three-Body Problem. No stranger to adapting revered novels, Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss joined forces with writer Alexander Woo for the big-budget sci-fi thriller The 3 Body Problem. Known for revolutionizing the medium with Got, which kickstarted the trend of big-budget TV shows centered around spectacle, Benioff and Weiss took a similar route for their Netflix show.
However, unlike Got‘s initial seasons, the Netflix high-budget series fails to encapsulate the books’ proficiency, leaving fans discontent, as its future moving forward appears uncertain.

Very few people in show business have a better understanding of what it takes to spearhead a massive, multimillion dollar production on the scale of "3 Body Problem" than showrunners David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. Benioff and Weiss guided "Game of Thrones" to eight total seasons, many of which included the most expensive installments of television ever committed to the small screen at the time, while Woo served as producer and writer on "True Blood." With so many moving parts to keep track of and so many urgent matters demanding attention at any given time, in all honesty, it's not terribly shocking that even this top creative team would have to scramble at the last minute to include a scene of utmost narrative importance.

“You are bugs” and you have been warned.
You might have spotted that message out in the world or on social media lately and if you’ve watched3 Body Problem, you know by now, nowhere is safe from the San-Ti. Humans might be the most dominant species on Earth, but to some, we’re simply pests. What exactly does this menacing phrase mean for our future?
In 3 Body Problem, humanity faces its greatest threat — not from our own planet — but from the San-Ti, an extraterrestrial civilization making a 400-year trek through space to conquer Earth and crush its inhabitants like an insect under their shoe. Inspired by the internationally celebrated novel The Three-Body Problem and created by David Benioff, D.B. Years after their last major production came to a divisive end, the "Game of Thrones" creators have launched their next big-budget gambit with Netflix's "3 Body Problem" (reviewed for /Film by yours truly here), yet another boundary-pushing adaptation based on a series of novels long considered to be as dense and audience-unfriendly as it gets. Yeah, that definitely sounds familiar. But unlike author George R.R. Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution was one of the deadliest periods in Chinese history for those in the scientific and technological community. Fueled by the desire to remove all forms of Western influence, Mao’s Red Guards destroyed laboratories, burned scientific literature, and executed or incarcerated scientists. It was a dark and troublesome decade for many people, including for acclaimed science fiction author Cixin Liu. Liu was only three when the political upheaval began, but remembers the gunshots and the Red Guards patrolling the streets. This distressing decade plays a pivotal role in his 2008 Hugo Award-winning novel, The Three-Body Problem.

Against all odds, a new adaptation of the acclaimed sci-fi novel "The Three-Body Problem" is finally here and it truly lives up to its billing as the nerdiest series of the year. Readers know full well just how deep in the weeds the original story can get, as author Liu Cixin oftentimes spends entire passages breaking down the finer points of astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and other heady Stem topics that definitely aren't for the faint of heart. It's to the writer's credit that even the driest of subject matter still provides a foundation for one of the most entertaining epics in all of fiction, made up of a full trilogy of books collectively titled "Remembrance of Earth's Past," thanks in no small part to his commitment to getting the science right wherever possible. In short, Cixin envisions an...

Based on the sprawling 2006 sci-fi novel "The Three-Body Problem" by Liu Cixin, Netflix's new series "3 Body Problem" is an ambitious tale that takes place across multiple time frames, and boasts an interweaving narrative involving space aliens, an invasion from the planet Trisolaris, and a strange, climate-disaster-themed virtual reality video game. Cixin's novel was the first in a three-book series called "Remembrance of Earth's Past," a series with deeply involved mythology complex enough to rival "Dune." One might require a quick read-up on the Fermi Paradox, the Alcubierre Drive, and notions of quantum entanglement before cracking it.
All eight episodes of "3 Body Problem" will debut on the same day, and it looks to be as ambitious as the book. The series will star notable actors like Benedict Wong, Jovan Adepo, Eiza González, Rosalind Chao, and Jonathan Pryce. As quickly as it started, Netflix’s eight-episode “3 Body Problem” ends, in a blur of VR headsets and scientist murders and that one time they sliced up a ship like bologna.
Though it hasn’t been greenlit yet, creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo have plans for Season 2, and Cixin Liu’s book series is a trilogy. Even if this is the end for now, the story remains open-ended. So what should viewers make of the finale?
What matters most is the foundation laid in previous episodes. An alien civilization called the San-Ti is headed toward Earth, expected to arrive in over 400 years. Though their original goal was to conquer Earth and escape their own tri-solar system, they realized that human technology would advance and likely surpass the San-Ti’s by the time they arrive. “This is a funeral procession,” their VR avatar says in a previous episode.

“Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have returned for their next act with a bold new science fiction series that is as entertaining as it is full of big ideas. The Emmy-winning duo teams with Alexander Woo (“The Terror: Infamy”) for Netflix’s “3 Body Problem,” an adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Chinese novel “The Three-Body Problem,” which is the first in a trilogy that was once deemed unadaptable. But hey, we’re all about proving people wrong these days.
The eight-episode first season, which is now streaming, transports the novel’s action to the U.K., depicting a world in which the results of experiments involving particle accelerators have stopped making sense, revealing that the world as we know it — science as we understand it — is no longer functioning as it should. David Benioff and D. B. Weiss of Game of Thrones fame divulged details about their latest Netflix outing, 3 Body Problem, and how they intend to handle its future. The duo, who’ve had experiences with dabbling in prestige television, have been joined by Alexander Woo as the series showrunners of the live-action adaptation of Liu Cixin’s uber-successful Chinese novel The Three-Body Problem.

In a recent interview, these creatives at the show’s helm revealed how they mapped out the show’s trajectory in coming seasons since there is enough material to prompt future installments. The Three-Body Problem is the first in Liu’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy of novels, with the second and third having more to offer.
With the creators having a more concrete vision of how to approach the source, fans could (potentially) expect to avoid another Game of Thrones fiasco.

This article contains spoilers for 3 Body Problem season 1.
Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem is a tour de force of hard science fiction, but its deep dive into physics in passages that sometimes contain large information dumps must have been a true adaptation challenge to 3 Body Problem creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. Fortunately, the writers were able to humanize the narrative by creating “the Oxford Five,” a group of scientist friends that divided the experiences of the novel’s single main character among them to create a more dynamic story filled with conflict, love, tragedy, and more.
The decision no doubt went beyond simply lending more emotional weight to the actions of the show’s protagonists; it also served to broaden the story from a singular Chinese experience that was the author’s focus to a more international, less male-centered perspective. Instead of merely following Professor Wang Miao,...

This post contains spoilers for the first season of Netflix's "3 Body Problem."
It's been nearly five years since "Game of Thrones" viewers said goodbye to the ambitious fantasy epic that headlined HBO's lineup for the better part of the 2010s. In that time, series co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss started developing a deeply controversial (now nixed) series called "Confederate," executive produced "The Chair" (a short-lived Netflix show about academia), directed a Leslie Jones standup special, and came under scrutiny for their lack of preparedness while making "Thrones."
Now, after five years of work on varyingly successful stray projects, Benioff and Weiss are back with co-creator credits on another ambitious genre story based on multiple beloved books. This time around, they're putting their spin on Liu Cixin's "3 Body Problem" alongside co-creator Alexander Woo. While the two shows actually couldn't be more different, it's impossible not to...

Netflix's new series "3 Body Problem" has a lot going for it. There's the intriguing, multi-layered sci-fi premise that's pulled straight from Liu Cixin's popular novel of the same name. There's an intriguing ensemble cast that includes "Game of Thrones" MVPs like John Bradley and Liam Cunningham along with the likes of Benedict Wong and breakout star Jess Hong. Perhaps most importantly for viewers committing their hard-won time to the series, there are several entertaining and disturbing mysteries at the heart of "3 Body Problem," from scientists dying by suicide after mental countdown clocks show up in their brains to a mysterious invisible woman who's just as likely to kill our heroes as she is to offer them a smoke.
By the end of the show's eight-episode first season, "3 Body Problem" does offer some solid answers to our questions.

The idea of making major changes to the source material isn't exactly a foreign concept to "3 Body Problem" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The pair famously became household names during their tenure on HBO's "Game of Thrones." While they remain infamous among mainstream audiences for the very public criticisms leveled against the final season of the hit fantasy series, the more invested fans have followed their every move from the beginning. Changes both minor and major inspired breathless internet hot takes but, for the most part, the two proved adept at taking occasionally impenetrable concepts from the books and translating them into live action.

In the previous episode of 3 Body Problem, the public revelation of San-Ti’s impending invasion sparked widespread panic and disorder. Wade is appointed the leader of humanity’s defense, establishing headquarters at Wychwood Manor to coordinate efforts against the threat. Meanwhile, Jin confronts Ye Wenjie with the shocking revelation of her role in inviting the San-Ti. Wenjie’s contempt and her belief in the need to control humanity unsettle Jin.
Wade, recognizing Jin’s promising intellect, recruits her to devise a plan to confront the San-Ti. As expected, Jin conceives the ambitious Staircase Project, drawing inspiration from Polish physicist Stanislaw Ulam’s theory on nuclear propulsion. Despite skepticism from other scientists, Wade sees the project as humanity’s best chance to counter the approaching threat. With the San-Ti announcing their presence and referring to humans as bugs in the previous episode of 3 Body Problem, things are out in the open. The general public now knows about the war they will be fighting in 400 years. With the followers of San-Ti now completely annihilated, Wade and his forces now only have a single enemy, the San-Ti, who are 4 lightyears away, getting closer with each passing moment. However, for human nature to descend into chaos in the face of calamity is no surprise. As the news breaks out, the world witnesses mass riots and civil disobedience. Some people even begin to worship the San-Ti out of fear, hoping for mercy when they arrive. Even though their arrival is expected in the 2400s, humans have begun to irrationally stock up on supplies, the way they did during the Covid-19 pandemic. The San-Ti are unable to lie and...

The previous episode of 3 Body Problem revealed San-Ti’s intention with Planet Earth. The San-Ti’s home planet experiences frequent extinction events, which is why they need a new home. The solution to their dilemma is provided by Wenjie, who hates humankind and invites them to Earth. It will take them 400 years to reach Earth, but in the meantime, Wenjie, with Mike Evans’ help, creates a fifth columnist kind of organization against human science and development, given that humans have always been detrimental for their own sakes. After Jack’s murder by San-Ti’s followers for turning them down, Jin is persuaded by Wade to visit the organization’s London summit. Reluctantly, she complies, and at the venue, the police end up ambushing the summit. After an unprovoked gunfight started by Tatiana, Clarence and his forces finally arrest Ye Wenjie, who is revealed to be the founder of the organization.

The second episode of 3 Body Problem shows Ye Wenjie’s journey as she develops contempt for humankind and its inherently invasive nature. As she sends a message of invitation to an unknown alien species to conquer the planet, the plot finally reveals one of the major themes of the series. The mysterious events happening on Earth are indeed associated with an extraterrestrial entity. Because of the revelation of an alien presence, it finally makes sense why Auggie was plagued with hallucinations of the countdown, and as soon as she puts an end to her research, the image disappears. Jin, on the other hand, explores the game inside the VR headgear. The NPCs inside the game inform Jin of her mission to help the civilization survive an apocalypse during the chaotic period of the planet. It seems the game is invite-only, and when Jack puts on the headgear, an AI beheads him in the game.

Beginning with HBO‘s epic Game of Thrones and continuing with Netflix sci-fi effort 3 Body Problem, producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have come to understand an important shortcut in adapting literature for television: keep as much of the good stuff as you can.
Though latter seasons of Thrones deviated significantly from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series (mostly due to the fact that Martin couldn’t get the final two books in on time…or maybe ever), the early seasons stuck close to the novels’ rich world. Netflix's "3 Body Problem" adaptation, which I reviewed for /Film here, is a genre-bender in the truest sense of the phrase. Based on Chinese author Liu Cixin's seminal novel of the same name, the series takes its cues from hard sci-fi, horror, and even bursts of fantasy while telling a sweeping and genuinely epic story about humanity's first contact with aliens. The live-action series isn't the first attempt to bring the Hugo-award-winning book to the small screen, as China's own uber-faithful "Three-Body" beat Netflix to the punch a few years ago. But as much as hardcore fans might enjoy pitting the two adaptations against one another, even that manufactured rivalry is nothing compared to the behind-the-scenes drama that ultimately led to "Game of Thrones" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss gaining the rights to put their own spin on the material.

“Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss warned Sunday night that fans shouldn’t expect the John Bradley we know and love as Samwell Tarly in their new Netflix series “3 Body Problem” — and that was their goal all along.
