- A prisoner escort aboard a ferry goes horribly wrong when the man is stabbed to death while handcuffed to Poole, leaving the detective humiliated and determined to find the killer.
- Prisoner Leon Hamilton is being escorted by ferry to Sainte Marie when he is stabbed to death, an embarrassment to Poole, who was hand-cuffed to him at the time. Hamilton was convicted of a holiday home scam and two of the passengers on the ferry, whodunnit fan and grand-daughter of investors, Suzie Park, and thuggish Sam King, an associate of another victim Gordon Foster, whose wife left him after his ruination, would seem to be likely suspects - until Poole uncovers a cunning identity swap.—don @ minifie-1
- Detective Inspector Poole has to deal with a bizarre and embarrassing case when a prisoner he is escorting to Sainte Marie is stabbed to death on the ferry - while handcuffed to Poole. The sea was a bit rough at the time and they were on the deck while the prisoner, Leon Hamilton, was being sick over the side. Hamilton was supposed to complete the remainder of his sentence on the island for embezzling some $2 million he had collected to build a new housing development. Many people on Sainte Marie lost what money they had buying into the scheme so there is no shortage of people who would very much have liked to see him dead. A second murder sets Poole on the right track. Meanwhile, the reclusive Poole ignores his staff's attempt to arrange a celebration for his birthday.—garykmcd
- Inspector Richard Poole is embarrassed when Leon Hamilton, the convict he was instructed to escort with a jailer to Sainte Marie prison, is stabbed in the back whilst handcuffed to him. Fearing for his career if he fails to uncover who the murderer is, Richard looks into Leon's criminal past as holiday real estate investment fraudster, yielding hundreds of his victims as too many potential suspects, also aboard. Poole focuses on fresh but apparently unimpressed heiress widow Anne Hamilton, convinced she knows more than she claims she does, who is unexpectedly murdered herself. Richard stubbornly refuses to have a bar of celebration for his birthday while looking into suspicious fraud victims and even the jailer he was aboard with him, until he can tie all together with a daring assumption.—KGF Vissers
