Really good pilot, declares its intentions from the beginning
david-tsbernardino22 November 2011
The thing that's best in American Horror Story is the cast. They are all very good and well known actors. Jessica Lange, Dylan McDermott, it's pretty rare to come up with such a good cast in a TV series.

The feeling that stays with us after seeing this first episode is it's weirdness. We can't really tell if any of the characters is seeing things, dreaming, or is just esquizofrenic. It's unclear if some sequences are real or a dream. Perhaps the pace for this pilot was too fast, with too much happening in just one episode. But sure it was pretty eerie and scary, exactly what you would expect from a horror show. For now it lives the expectations, and I'm confident it will deliver in the next episodes. This is one to keep track on.

Oh, and the fight scene was amazingly acted.

Promising Pilot
EdYerkeRobins6 October 2011
I'm a long-time horror fan. My wife & her mom aren't. We all enjoyed "American Horror Story".

The setup is fairly standard: a feuding family moves cross country, only to find that they can't run from their problems, and may in fact run into even worse ones. Of the supernatural kind.

It's wonderful to see well-produced horror on TV. As much as I want to like shows like "American Gothic" & "Masters of Horror", these shows just feel cheap. While "American Horror Story" is a touch over-indulgent on camera tricks, it's got a wonderful atmosphere that truly unsettles. That being said, the show so far resembles more of a Lynchian melodrama than a straight-up spooktacular.

Much of this has to do with the personalities. Connie Britton & Dylan McDermott feel like a real couple going through real hard, awkward times, although I hope they lose their habit of YELLING EXPOSITION AT EACH OTHER. Their conflict is deep, yet their devotion feels real; while I can't say I agree with their courses of action, it isn't a "white hat, black hat" scenario. As for the rest of the leads, Jessica Lange was already on my nerves by episode's end, and I could take or leave Taissa Farmiga as the couple's daughter (that being said, I'm interested in where their threads take them). Luckily, there are top-shelf supporting cameos from Frances Conroy ("Six Feet Under") & Denis O'Hare ("True Blood"). Then, of course, there's the menagerie of ghouls & ghosts, from the bondage-suited "Rubber Man" adorning all the ads to bloody twin boys & the Down's syndrome girl next door.

"American Horror Story" isn't the greatest thing I've ever seen. But it shows great promise. A common criticism of the horror film (unfortunately for good reason) is underdeveloped characters. The TV season format allows for deeper connection & taking time to draw out characters, motivations & stories. For now, count me in for the ride.

A winner episode and series.
mm-3916 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
American Horror Story: Pilot is a winner episode and series for the following reasons. There is a real evil presence with the directing, acting, general feel in each segment of the Pilot. Weird script, in a bizarre way that interests and entices the audience. Who was the guy in the leather suit? The characters attacking the family are ghoulish in a creepy way which unnerves the viewer. The neighbour is really strange. The house the family/victims live in creates a creepy atmosphere. Beautiful house but with such a history there are bound to be unusual things. What is the purpose of these characters plans for the family? Why does the victim see something that is not true? For example the wife sees the housekeeper as a older lady and the house sees her as a younger sexy woman. What is the illusion?

Pretty ballsy

So I managed to watch the Pilot for American Horror Story...it was certainly odd. I say that in a weird way. I have to say that I don't think I have ever seen a Pilot with more stuff crammed in it. There was A LOT of things that happened. In fact, too much that I lost count. In a way it was too much, but in another way it marks a certain refreshing establishment. The horror bits weren't scary but they certainly were odd and weird. I think that the drama and horror aspects of it aren't well tuned, and the two leads in one scene in an argument were pretty weak, as was he dialogue. I don't know, the only word that i can come up with is ODD because while it has problems, it also stands out in a way. That is all I want to say for now.

When American Horror Story Begins.
xindiea30 October 2021
Watching the first episode of American Horror Story make me feel so nostalgic. Wow, this is a really good pilot, all the mystery, the drama, the haunted house... so spooky right? It's a really good way to begin this horror show, a unique way to start a unique horror story.

Good start. It is worth!
hugo_leolima22 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is about fidelity/treason,resentments, pain, pleasure, trauma, hurt, trust in each other, and a murder house, all this and much more in a psychological horror thriller that worth it to watch. The characters that surprise me in "Pilot" are : Tate(Evan Peters),Ben(Dylan McDermott) and Moira(Frances Conroy).

The begin is perfect, scene one. The scenes at school could be better but is acceptable. The sequence,in the backyard, kitchen,Tate's therapy, violet's room and shower are incredible. The soundtrack is awesome.I did not get scared, I just had one fright, but the whole story is tense, delicate and this is enough for me. Pay attention in little details and mount the puzzle. Some scenes initially are confused but then them are solved.

"Pilot" is a decent start for the American horror story show. I expect more for the other episodes, more from Jessica Lange and Denis O'Hare, they are fantastic, deserves more space. The house chosen is perfect, the architecture is beautiful, also the shades and objects are really appreciable. Well, congratulations for all involved on this show.

Psycho-Sexual!
cawylie6 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Best word to describe the Pilot benchmark episode. Yes, it borrows from most horror movies, but at least they were good ones. But, aside from Supernatural, how many other horror-themed TV shows are there? (Dexter, not included.) The only thing preventing a better rating from is the gratuitous McDermbutt (the reviewer is male) and the, um, flowery language that seems to be seeded in every other line. (The male nudity should be paired with female nudity. If we see a guy's butt, I think it's only fair to see a lady's butt.) The language appeared emphasized by some actors, like they were told "This is cable, have fun with the words."

This show comes across to me as more creepy than scary. I think all the online promos for the show harmed it a little - like I was desensitized whenever the moments meant to shock me didn't. I knew about the creature in the basement. I knew about the Plastic Fantastic Lover. But that doesn't mean this show was over-hyped and failed to deliver.

What saved this show, for me, was the casting/writing. The character work, although twisted in so many different ways, cements the show. Everyone, even minor characters, make the show, even if we don't currently understand their place.

Writing/Directing/Editing: 8 (less language/balance "nudity"). Acting: 8 (only as good as what's in the script). Music: 9 (would be a different show without it).

What a bunch of Muppets.
witcheemon19 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Don't get me wrong, the series has beautiful production values and thrills in all the right places, hence why I've given it as high a rating as I have.

But these characters are like bags of thick rocks. Particularly the family. Good grief. If you are in such a frame of mind that you can willingly have sex with your "husband" in a gimp suit he just found, and then NEVER MENTION IT AGAIN, there's something wrong with you. If you see your dad making out with an old lady that's not your mum and don't at least have a jab of "she's old enough to be grandma", there's something wrong with you. Honestly I don't know if this family lives to the end of the season. And frankly I don't care. It's horror movie Darwinism, and the system works.

Best actress award goes here to Jessica Lange. Absolute monster. She was repulsive from start to finish. That was the point right? (I don't know if these constitute as spoilers cause this is all stuff from the first episode, but better safe than sorry)

An excellent start for a great series and one of the most relevant of the decade
MomentIMDB16 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
American horror story brought back the anthology and this aspect gave it something fresh from the beginning and very interesting.

murder house is one of the most beloved seasons of the series and one of the best rated. and the pilot gives a great screenshot of the season, fulfills the function of showing how the tone of the series will be, mixing drama with horror in a spectacular way and also presenting the characters.

The first minutes with the twins was a great introduction to the series and an excellent scene. The plot of the harmon is something cliche but the episode shows that it is not going to be a cliche and it is great.

Jessica Lange is amazing and gets into the skin of the excellent character and her performance is gold. Frances Conroy is amazing and Alexandra Breckenbridge too. the secondary characters are the most interesting as tate, the man with the burned face, constance, moira.

The soundtrack is amazing and every scene is well accompanied and I love the direction and it always fascinates me.

If I have to say something bad it is that all the characters are presented at once and can be confusing.

Murder house pilot
jackDee-5656530 December 2020
Its a slow start to a great TV series, the pilot give you a first glimpse into the crazy world you are being introduced to and it does greatly, the season is the Harmon family moving to a new house with a dark history and even more messed up secret, I like all the characters and the acting was great, this series is not for the faint of heart, two kid brothers get killed in the opening moments, a guy burns his family alive after being influenced by the house, Ben Harmon has a lot of scene while nude and touching himself at the bedroom window and people having sex with a ghost dressed in black leather bondage suit is super creepy, overall if you are an adult that loves suspense and horror, don't mind sex nudity then likely you will enjoy AHS murder house pilot and series

Another Ghost Story in a Haunted House
claudio_carvalho11 December 2011
The psychologist Ben Harmon and his wife Vivien move to an old Victorian house in Los Angeles with their teenage daughter Violet expecting to rebuild their lives. Vivien had a miscarriage of her baby and did not have sex with her husband; one afternoon, she found Ben with one of his students in their bed and they had almost split. Ben has decided to attend his patients at home to stay closer to his beloved family and repair his relationship with Vivien.

When they arrive, the real estate agent discloses that the previous dwellers were a gay couple and they both died in a murder-suicide case. When they arrive, they meet Adelaide that has Down syndrome and her weird mother Constance. Then the former housekeeper Moira visits Vivien and she hires the old lady; however, when Ben looks at her, he sees a sexy young woman. Meanwhile Violet is bullied at school by an older teenager.

Ben's first patient is a teenager with serious psychological problems and he befriends Violet that is near to commit suicide. Sooner there are manifestations of weird events in the house that is haunted.

The "Pilot" of the "American Horror Story" series is another ghost story in a haunted house. There are good performances and special effects, but my question is how to hold a TV series about an overworked theme? My vote is seven.

Title (Brazil): "American Horror Story – Pilot"

Note: On 11 April 2017 I saw this episode again.

Shockingly amateur
gustavnedergaard29 June 2021
This pilot is filled with so many problems I'm actually shocked it even got greenlit. The editing is so bad that it's distracting, cuts at almost every second during dialogue. Sometimes there's even jump cuts at the weirdest places for seemingly no reason. It makes it look like they somehow messed up during shooting. Characters and dialogue is also just so poorly written, but this might be intentional to an extent; to make it feel dreamlike.

So far all I've seen is this pilot, but i would hope it gets better because this is just straight up terrible.

I had high hopes, but ended up disappointed
jrschutte-8144615 September 2016
I, personally don't particularly understand the hype surrounding this show. I watched the first episode really hoping to enjoy it, but ended up disappointed. I thought the plot for the first episode was really dull, and uninteresting. It just felt like the writers were trying way too hard to make it creepy, but it just wasn't working. There were two other things in particular that I didn't like about the show. The first one was having a girl with down syndrome in the story line to try and make the show creepier; I found that really offensive. The other I disliked was Jessica Lange's character. I thought the writers made her character way too stereotypical in relation to the story, and I just generally don't like Jessica Lange's acting. Lastly, I realize that some TV shows take a while to build up the plot beyond the exposition, but with all the good things I've heard about this show- or even just the pilot episode- I was expecting more.

Medical Doctor
If Dylan McDermott is portraying a psychiatrist, then why would he not be able to offer assistance to his wife when she is giving birth. Pyschiatrists are medical doctors, after all.

S1.E1 - Pretty Good First Episode [8/10]
panagiotis19938 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E1) My Live Reaction / Review for American Horror Story Season 1 Episode 1 ''Pilot''. I've watched this season a long time ago, time to re-watch it. Finding a new house where a murder-suicide happened? Yeah not the best idea. Vivien caught Ben sleeping with another woman and she is willing to stay with him? I wouldnt. If Moira is an old woman, why Ben sees her as young? Im a bit confused. Ben thinks that for Vivien is that easy to forgive him? Vivien is having sex with a masked man that isnt Ben, thinking that it is Ben? That's disturbing. Overall this episode was good, my rating is 8/10.

Need to see but the developpment is there
AvionPrince1624 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
We need to see: the developpment were pretty good and this episode is an introduction to the whole season and we have known more the characters that we will see in the season: the father, the mother, the daughter and her girlfriend. We have also a story with the housemaid that was pretty strange. The boyfriend look pretty dangerous. And we know also that the father and the mother had some problems about trust and sex. Sound good. Have some horror moments but its too light for now and didnt really scare in any ways. Need to see more episodes.

Disappointed by how conventional and not scary this is.
FallonTimberlake201627 September 2017
American Horror Story is a show that has been talked about by fans for years, so I went into this show with modest expectations. Unfortunately, this episode did not deliver for me. I don't know whether this show gets better as it goes along, but this is a very weak start for the most part.

For a show named American Horror Story, there is way too little scary moments. The opening scene was meant to be creepy, but I was just bored because it lasted too long. There is some good imagery in this film, but that isn't enough to actually make the show scary.

If all of the characters in the show suddenly died, I honestly would not care, which says a lot about how the show sets up the characters. The main couple (Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott) is so annoying that I honestly just wanted to punch both of them.

There is one scene in particular where Britton and McDermott are giving their all into these performances, but because the writing is so terrible it is laughably bad.

However, not every scene is that bad, and there are actually some really good performances. Jessica Lange is amazing as the weird neighbor and Evan Peters is very good as a mentally off teenager. Peters delivers the only even remotely scary sequence in the episode.

These performances are not enough to bring the show up, however. It just doesn't deliver on any level of horror, and can be so terribly written that I started to wonder if I was watching a 90's soap opera.

I give American Horror Story--Pilot a C-.

And the best and strangest new series on TV is… drum roll… reviewed by an even stranger entity
igoatabase6 October 2011
Warning : This is one of my critic experiment so deciphering it should be relatively challenging. Still I hope you'll enjoy reading it.

Dear diary, I know everything. Well nearly but my mind has survived for centuries so my imagination is nearly unlimited and I have developed my senses in ways that can't even be described by words. This is my first attempt at explaining what has been happening for the last past months and the extraordinary events I have witnessed. I apologize in advance if my writing doesn't make sense to you reader, my worst enemy and sibling. I worry that the years have affected my judgement and even question the very health of my sanity.

It all began when two strange visitors came to me. They said they were looking for someone to help them create their next project. I never trusted Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk but I have to admit that it was hard to resist two of the talented people behind Nip/Tuck, one of the most disturbing and fascinating series ever aired. They quickly began to sketch ideas everywhere and the only thing I could do was watching, like I always do. I remember reading cryptic references to Twin Peaks, Tim Burton's Big Fish and even Carnivàle. But the truth is that their culture was so substantial and horrific that most of the time I kept my eyes closed.

The weeks passed and soon the place became an anthill infested by creativity. A living organism ? Probably but as a simple creature of evolution I only referred it as a bestiary. Among its odd inhabitants one of my favorites were the Kreuger Twins. I named them after my best childhood friend Freddy. That boy had a thing for blades and actually had a twin brother named Edward but that's an other story to tell… An other group of people I enjoyed watching were the designers. Fashion ? Interior ? They just kept working like bees and made things so beautiful and from the outfits to the sets an environment had never been so creepy.

One day they all left without even saying goodbye. They acted like I had never existed and I felt completely misunderstood. But a few weeks later a few of them came back but more important, new and specially very important people were among them. The first one I recognized was Jessica Lange because I had already met her thirty five years ago on a tropical island. Back then I remember she was dating some big hairy sniffy guy. Now for some reason they keep calling her Constance but I know that's Jessica. She's still gorgeous and looked fresh in her colorful outfits but what a weird lady she has become ! And she has a young daughter ! How come she doesn't look anything like her father ? Beside Madame Lange there was also an actor named Dylan McDermott. I had never seen him before, well maybe once or twice but only in minor roles. For some reason he kept waking up in the middle of the night and walking naked. I read John Noble is his mentor so I suspect they were actually filming a spin-off of Fringe starring him as a younger Peter Bishop. It's only a theory but I'm rarely wrong.

In fact they were many other performers working with us, yes peeping is a full time job, but I can't just list them all. Actually it's one of my complain because I worry that the next weeks won't be as surprising. Still I was very impressed by some of their performances and one scene featuring a couple having a row, Doctor Ben (McDermott) and Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton actually), proved the cast really has what it takes to wow their audience. But who could possibly be watching them beside me ? Probably nobody ! Things happened so fast, too fast in my opinion, that I also forgot to mention my good old friend Frances Conroy. We met ten years ago Six Feet Under the Sea and that woman is like wine, she ages well. More than a natural redhead, a sorceress. There're moments it really seemed she was in her late twenties. A beekeeper has never been so ravishing ! No wait that was on True Blood. This time she was dressed as a housekeeper, at least it's the image my eyes transmitted to my brain. But somehow I mostly saw her as a drop dead sexy French maid so I suspect my libido is torturing my soul again. The events I had to endure were frightening and confusing enough, I really didn't need things to become so realistic and psychological. As long as my red candles burn, I should be safe. But I really hope the sun will soon rise or else I might go all The Shining on them.

To go back to my bestiary in general I was fascinated by the intelligence, weirdness but also vicious nature of its animals. They call themselves humans but that's an awful name for a species if you think about it. Still I have found their paranormal and horrific destiny quite intriguing so far. That's why I have decided to keep watching them just in case they need my assistance. So until my next entry I'll just listen to the dusty records they left me and recall the industrial noise they made in the silent night. The hypnotic opening title of the best new Horror Story in America has just ended so it's time for me to vanish before someone notice my presence.

Wicked night,

American Horror Story-Pilot
Scarecrow-8828 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, so I watched the Pilot for the first season of American Horror Story. I'm kind of intrigued but the jury's still out. A married couple and their daughter move to a "20s LA Victorian" house that is infested with evil. The previous owners died tragically ("murder-suicide" says the real estate agent who puts on a rather poor poker face; sure her face is icy cold and her attempts to charm them certainly left me less than impressed), and later a criminal dying of brain cancer, with a burnt visage and creepy white eye (they always have the creepy white eye), informs the man of the house, psychiatrist, Ben (Dylan McDermott), that his family must leave. This creep who peeps on them and forewarns of horrors to come if Ben's family doesn't leave, says he was an obedient child to "the voices", who commanded him to burn his family and the house alive. The voices are starting to communicate to Ben, and he's sleepwalking, doing things like lighting his fireplace and holding his hands over lit stove eyes. Ben's estranged wife, Vivien (Connie Britton), suffered not only a miscarriage (the baby was seven months old, awful) but literally walked in on her husband boning one of his students (he must have been a teacher on the East Coast). So Vivien is having a hard time forgiving Ben, understandably so, and this pilot shows their angst while attempting for some sort of domestic calm after the emotional storm. Ben has a daughter, Violet (Taissa Farmiga), having trouble adjusting to her new school thanks to a queen bitch who considers herself high on the hog, a voice that must be adhered to, accompanied by her two followers, bourgeois bullies, quite the divas. An unstable patient currently under doc Ben's evaluation is drawn to Violet and vice versa. Tate (Evan Peters; he has these black eyes that seem soulless, and his behavior, manner of talk, his approach and opinion to/towards life is certainly shouting loud the signs of a potential psychopath) offers to frighten Violet's chief tormentor (the whole connection derived from Tate catching Violet cutting; yeah, she's a cutter). Going into the basement, Tate has Violent bring the girl, cutting on/off the lights, apparitions of (demonic?) creatures (ghouls?) appear. Decades prior to the Harmons buying the house, twins with bats entered it when it was once in ruin and left to decay, breaking and destroying glass, finding their way into the basement, were killed by "something". Their specters appear to the "mongoloid" daughter ("You are going to die here") of an eccentric neighbor (Jessica Lange; who easily steals every scene she's in) equipped with acid-tongue, blunt honesty with quite the sting, and a way with words. From Virginia, Constance Langdon came to LA for a Hollywood career, but she was not the kind to get naked in front of the camera. Once she had the child, her dreams for a career hit the skids. Constance has a way of infiltrating Vivien's domain, her daughter obsessed with the house (or, better yet, the ghouls within it) offering an opportunity to do so. Add Frances Conroy's maid Moira O'Hara (she has a "wicked eye" as well; something about the albino eye interests show creators, Ryan Murphy and Brad Halchuk), who appears in sexpot form to Ben while just a creepy old lady to everyone else. To add an odd touch to the pilot, Moira finds Constance going through Vivien's jewelry. Constance calls her an old whore and warned her to not get in her way or she would kill her *again*. Throw in a gimp costume for some kink (the gimp appears to Vivien and they have sex; Vivien believes it is Ben in dress up; but is it?). Constance even stops Ben from placing his hands over the burning stove eyes, telling him it isn't time. So obviously Constance knows a few things. Vivien is pregnant; after a major row, Vivien and Ben get all hot and heavy, going at it. Yeah, this show had places to go yet.

One of a kind
scarlettimogen13 September 2020
Very unusual and well acted all apart from Connie Britten who is absolutely awful. She has the same expression throughout and really does dampen an otherwise good series. She's like that in everything I've seen. Just awful. But this first season of AHS I'd s well worth the watch
