- TriviaThe character of Robert Bell was inspired by Theodore Judah, architect of the Transcontinental Railroad and first chief engineer of the Central Pacific. Judah led an expedition that determined the best route for the railroad and presented his survey to President Buchanan. The actual approval for federal funding though would come from the next president, Abraham Lincoln.
- GoofsAs Joseph Black Moon is baptized, the rest of the congregation is singing the hymn "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior". The show takes place in 1865; however the lyrics to this hymn were not written until 1868, and the music until 1870.

Good start
I was definitely disappointed in the reviews that this was show was getting. I just want o say it was nowhere near as bad or dull. The Pilot was definitely not perfect, and it had some flaws, but overall, I am intrigued enough to continue watching. The lead actor was also pretty good, although there was one moment where he was laughable and it was his scream of 'NO!' when they murder someone with information at the end. It was just hilarious. Other than that, he was no more weaker than the lead for The Walking Dead (who I dislike a lot and brings the show down). I also don't know why people are acting like this is the first AMC Pilot to not be amazing. I did not find it bad, but opposed to that, I never found the Pilot for The Killing or even Rubicon that strong, although The Killing's was definitely weaker and Rubicon got much better as it went along. So I give it a solid 8/10.
