A24 picks up the new film from Ruben Ostlund, the director of Triangle Of Sadness – and Kirsten Dunst and Keanu Reeves lead the cast.
We’d imagine that one of the most coveted projects to go to market at Cannes this week is Ruben Östlund’s follow-up to the critically celebrated 202 film, Triangle Of Sadness. It’s called The Entertainment System Is Down, it boasts a glorious premise, an admired director and a leading trio of Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl and Keanu Reeves. Oh, and let’s not forget the giant plane that the production bought before it even found a studio backer.
Whilst studio backing of some sort was never really in doubt given the star power that Östlund has attached to the project, Östlund will likely be particularly happy to have A24 as a partner for the US rights, given that this looks to be one of the...

A24 acquired the U.S. rights to Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down this weekend.
The eight-figure deal gives A24 U.S. distribution rights to what will be the Swedish film director’s second English-language movie, after 2022’s Triangle of Sadness. The latter won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, which marked Östlund’s second time taking home the prize after 2017’s The Square.
Like his last movie, The Entertainment System Is Down is also a social satire, this time set on a long-haul flight in which the entertainment system fails and passengers must figure out how else to fill their time. Östlund and his producer, Erik Hemmendorff, purchased a real Boeing 747 for the film.
The movie’s cast includes Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Nicholas Braun and Samantha Morton, with Dunst and Brühl set to play a married couple.

Two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund’s highly anticipated next feature The Entertainment System Is Down might just have Keanu Reeves on board.
Given his unassailable pedigree as a filmmaker, the next film by Ruben Östlund was already highly anticipated, not least because he’s following up the acclaimed Triangle Of Sadness with another ambitious English-language project. It’s the central idea for the film that has garnered so much buzz up until this point: according to Variety, Östlund has ‘teased it several times as a social satire set on a long-haul flight on which the entertainment system isn’t working, sparking chaos and rages among passengers. The Swedish director has been collecting anecdotes for the last few years for the movie and recently finalised the script.’

Call it “The Matrix of Sadness.”
“Triangle of Sadness” writer-director Ruben Östlund has tapped Keanu Reeves to star in his next film, the disaster comedy “The Entertainment System Is Down,” Variety reports.
Reeves will join an international ensemble cast in the Swedish filmmaker’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated dark comedy “Triangle of Sadness.” While the cast is not set and exact plot details are being kept under wraps, “The Entertainment System Is Down” is expected to be a satirical, class-conscious, transportation-based black comedy, similar to “Triangle of Sadness” but even more ambitious. It’s set on a long international flight where, yes, the entertainment system is down, and the passengers react poorly.
“They don’t have the screens that we are so used to in our contemporary world,” Östlund told Variety in 2022. “So it’s going to be like a study of how human beings interact in this little laboratory that is a plane.

Keanu Reeves is making headlines again after joining the cast of Paramount‘s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog by engaging in talks to star in Triangle of Sadness director Ruben Östlund’s next feature, The Entertainment System Is Down.
Variety broke the news on Friday. Still, details about the plot remain a mystery. Östlund says The Entertainment System Is Down is a social satire set on a long-haul flight with a faulty entertainment system. As boredom spreads throughout the cabin, rage starts to overwhelm the passengers. Chaos ensues. The idea for Östlund’s next feature is something he’s been building for years. The filmmaker says he’s been collecting anecdotes to use as inspiration for The Entertainment System Is Down, with several years of material at his disposal. Though it likely involves dark comedy and sharp humor, Reeves’s role remains a mystery.

What’s Keanu Reeves up to in his post-“John Wick” period? Well, he’s not quite done with the character yet; he’ll reprise it briefly in the upcoming spin-off “Ballerina,” in theaters next summer. Cannes Chief Calls David Fincher ‘One of the Most Important Filmmakers in the World in Recent Years’
Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Fremaux took a break from screening movies to share his faith in the big screen and why filmmakers shouldn’t compromise on theatrical in a conversation with two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Ostlund at the Goteborg Film Festival.
Fremaux talked about the winning theatrical strategy of streamers such as Apple, which presented Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” in competition and had it released in theaters via Paramount. The movie is now nominated for 10 Oscars, including best actress for Lily Gladstone, best picture and director.
“Apple has a different strategy than Netflix, and what they have done with Martin Scorsese’s film and Ridley Scott’s film [‘Napoleon’], they made a lot of money at the box office, and now the films are on the platforms, which is the perfect reflection of our times,” he said.

“My role is to sometimes talk to the press or to fight with policemen,” Cannes Delegate General Thierry Fremaux joked during a keynote this evening at the Göteborg Film Festival.
Fremaux had been making a comedic reference to his altercation with a local police officer on the pavement outside the Carlton Hotel at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. The altercation — which went viral — was just one of the topics Fremaux touched on this evening in Göteborg during a keynote session with Swedish filmmaker and two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund.
Concluding the description of his unique job title, Fremaux added: “We are really at the service of the artist, the press, the audience and the professionals. If those roles are well done, we are happy.”

Director Ruben Östlund announced in Cannes that he wanted one of the scenes in his upcoming airplane disaster movie The Entertainment System Is Down to prompt the biggest walkout in the history of cinema.
Seven months on, the Swedish two-time Cannes Palme d’Or winner is getting closer to realizing this ambition having completed the screenplay for the film.
“It’s being translated into English. We’ll be going everywhere for the casting… The aim is to shoot in early 2025,” the director told Deadline at the Les Arcs Film Festival in the French Alps earlier this week.
As previously revealed, the social satire will be set on a long-haul flight which descends into deadly chaos when the inflight entertainment system goes down.
“Modern human beings are used to being able to distract themselves with screens, we’re never bored. Soon after take-off on this long-haul flight – I was thinking something...

Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund, whose movies “The Square” and “Triangle of Sadness” have won two of the past five Palmes d’Or, will attend Cannes this year not as a competitor but as jury president. Over a lively phone chat, Östlund shares his wildest aspirations for the festival.

Ruben Östlund has had tremendous success at the Cannes Film Festival. The famously bold writer-director has twice won the prestigious Palme d’Or prize, first for “The Square” in 2017 and most recently for “Triangle of Sadness” in 2022. The success of the latter film there catapulted it into the Oscar conversation for the 95th annual awards, and it sustained its buzz all the way through nominations morning when it secured three citations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Should the film pull off a surprise victory in Best Picture, it would become just the third Palme d’Or winner to also nab the top Oscar, following “Marty” in 1956 and “Parasite” in 2020.

When you buy a ticket for a Ruben Östlund film, you'd better be ready to squirm. At minimum. Depending on your physical and mental fortitude, you might want to reserve an aisle seat. Because once Östlund cranks up one of his excruciating set pieces, like the climactic dinner in "The Square" or the nightmarish symphony of bodily fluids in "Triangle of Sadness," you might find yourself bolting for the exit.
Östlund's movies offer unsubtle, occasionally overbearing commentary on our broken society. Sometimes they feel like endurance tests designed for the sole amusement of the filmmaker. In this regard, Ôstlund has much in common with Gaspar Noé, whose "Irreversible" caused physical upset in viewers by deploying a low-frequency sound used by police for riot control. If you're wondering why anyone in their right mind would willingly subject themselves to such films, sometimes the invigorating technique and totality of the director's vision is worth a little queasiness.

Ruben Östlund has no trouble being “harsh” to his audience. The Swedish filmmaker behind wonderfully discomforting movies like “Force Majuere” and “The Square” is also making crowds squirm with his latest film, “Triangle of Sadness.”
Set on a luxury yacht where the 1% enjoy their privilege — until a shipwreck finds the rich relying on a toilet maid named Abigail (played by BAFTA nominee Dolly de Leon), —“Triangle of Sadness” won the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, repeating the honor Östlund received for “The Square” in 2017. And now the film is nominated for three Academy Awards, including picture, director and original screenplay.
The accolades come in spite – or maybe because — of its dark and satirical take on gender roles and class warfare. Then there’s that vomit scene, which has to be the longest in cinema history. “I actually wrote in the script that I’m going to go...

Making eat-the-rich comedy Triangle of Sadness, with a gross-out scene that rivals Farrelly Brothers movies, was simple for Swedish director Ruben Östlund.
“I wanted to create a roller-coaster ride for adults,” he said during a panel for the Neon movie during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees. The film follows an influencer fashion couple (played by Harris Dickinson and the late Charlbi Dean) who board the wrong the yacht of rich people. The ship’s fate is worse than that of those from Gilligan’s Island, with a drunk Marxist captain losing sway of the boat which crashes onto a deserted island. There on that isolation off at sea, the lesser of the crew becomes more senior in status in a swap between the rich and poor.

Swedish director Ruben Östlund opened this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival with his raucously entertaining new social satire “Triangle of Sadness,” continuing a festival tour that began this spring at Cannes — where he nabbed the Palme d’Or, joining the likes of Francis Ford Coppola and Michael Haneke in the select club of filmmakers to have earned the honor twice. In Sarajevo, where he also received the festival’s Heart of Sarajevo Award, he joined us at the Variety Lounge presented by Sarajevo Film Festival to talk about privilege, masculinity and embracing bad reviews.
Following his Oscar-nominated art-scene comedy “The Square,” Östlund’s latest sees him taking aim at the One Percent, western entitlement, the fashion industry, the arms trade, you name it — all colliding on a luxury cruise that goes spectacularly awry. Ostlund expects it to be an international co-production like ‘Triangle Of Sadness’.
