After having a solid enough box office (if not exactly a critical) success with his English-language debut "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters," "Dead Snow" filmmaker Tommy Wirkola is reteaming with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's production company Gary Sanchez to develop a half-hour series at Showtime. According to Deadline, the untitled project is a dark comedy based on "Hellfjord," a TV series Wirkola created, wrote and produced in his native Norway with Kjetil Omberg, Terje Strømstad and Stig Frode Henriksen. The seven-part "Hellfjord" screened at Fantastic Fest last year, where programmer Todd Brown described it as falling "into the sweet spot between 'Hot Fuzz' and 'Twin Peaks.'" Well, this is exciting news. Deadline is reporting that Norwegian writer/director Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) is re-teaming with producers Adam McKay and Will Ferrell for an English-language version of the superb TV comedy series Hellfjord for Showtime. While I seem to have been one of the only critics who liked Wirkola's anarchic Brothers Grimm update, it has just crossed Us$200 million at the global box office, and off the back of news that a sequel has been greenlit, it seems Wirkola is on a roll.Hellfjord is the story of a disgraced Oslo police detective who is banished to the remote climes of Northern Norway after accidentally killing his own horse. The bizarre small town of Hellfjord boasts an oddball population all aged...

Exclusive: After collaborating on Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, the movie’s writer/director Tommy Wirkola and production company Gary Sanchez are reteaming, this time on the TV side. Norwegian filmmaker Wirkola and Gary Sanchez’s Will Ferrell and Adam McKay have set up a half-hour project at Showtime. The untitled dark comedy, now in development, is based on the 2012 Norwegian half-hour series, Hellfjord, which Wirkola created and produced with his partners Kjetil Omberg, Terje Strømstad and Stig Frode Henriksen through their Tappeluft Pictures. Wirkola, Henriksen, and Zahid Ali, the writers on the original seven-episode series, will also write the Showtime adaptation. Wirkola will direct the potential pilot and will executive produce with Ferrell and McKay. Described as in the vein of Hot Fuzz and Twin Peaks with a Nordic noir twist, Hellfjord centers on a disgraced Oslo police officer (Ali) who, after a freak horse accident, is banished to serve...

After lampooning Quentin Tarantino and resurrecting Nazi zombies, Norwegian writer-director Tommy Wirkola finally gets to unveil his English language debut. True to form, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters proves to be a goofy, yet thoroughly entertaining romp that blends the Brothers Grimm with bloody violence to darkly comic effect. We have long been fans of Wirkola's work here at Twitch, who first caught our eye with his Kill Bill-inspired debut Kill Bujlo, before graduating to the international stage with Nazi zombie horror comedy, Dead Snow. Last year, he had a hand in writing the delightfully surreal television series Hellfjord, which screened in its entirety at Fantastic Fest to a rapturous reception, and now he has ascended to the big leagues, with the release of his Hollywood debut,...

Ah FrightFest how I love thee. Yes, my annual excursion to Scotland for Glasgow FrightFest continues this year, and I couldn’t be happier! This years line-up is strong, Very strong, with plenty of variety and some great film picks by Alan, Ian, Paul and Greg. Plus the appearance of Norwegian drama Hellsfjord! Of all the films showing this year there’s one that I most excited to see – Detention of the Dead… I’ve tried my hardest to cover the film as much as possible over the past year as it looks like my “cup of tea”, so for it to show at FrightFest is awesome (although to be fair I already knew that was in the line-up). However the real big surprise is the appearance of Neil Jordan’s Byzantium in the line-up – the Scottish crowd is notoriously “blood-thirtsy” so I hope Jordan’s film isn’t too sedate for the Glasgow crowd.

Fantastic Fest got an early treat of upcoming Norwegian cult television series Hellfjord, with the entire series screening at the Texas festival prior to the October 9th debut in Norway. And the response? Oh, yes, it was rather good. Which is to be expected given that the bizarre comedy comes from the creative team behind Dead Snow with the hands on supervision of Rovdyr and You Said What director Patrik Syversen with talents such as the director of Cold Prey, Roar Uthaug, chipping in on an episode to episode basis. The goal was something akin to Twin Peaks meets Hot Fuzz and they very much get there.Hellfjord is the story of the urban police officer Salmander - second generation Pakistani immigrant - who after somewhat...

Though we must continue to await some sort of video evidence of upcoming Norwegian miniseries Hellfjord - which should surely be online soon as the series launches in Norway October 9 and broadcaster Nrk is apparently already airing promos across the network - there is no need to keep you waiting entirely for a taste of the latest from the team behind Dead Snow. No, while video is in short supply, stills we have. Here's the back story for those who may have missed previous articles. Hellfjord is the joint creation of Tommy Wirkola and Stig Frode Henriksen - the principal creative minds behind Nazi zombie comedy Dead Snow, with Wirkola also at the helm of the upcoming Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters - and star...

From the creators of Dead Snow, Cold Prey and You Said What (so pretty much every talented Norwegian currently making movies) comes this delightfully weird and wonderful television series, following a disgraced city police officer as he sees out his final days in uniform in the remote and incredibly strange fishing town of Hellfjord. Tommy Wirkola is a name that should be familiar to many readers of Twitch, as he is the main creative force behind Norwegian Nazi zombie comedy Dead Snow. The success of that film landed him writer/director duties on the forthcoming Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton starring as ass-kicking siblings in an invigorated and action-packed re-interpretation of the Brothers Grimm's classic fairy-tale. Before that hits...

In a day where shows are made, remade, and rehashed to remade again so that they become a Möbius strip of canned tedium that screams into a void paying as much attention to it as it does a mosquito bite, to see something pass by on its own set of legs is a mind-numbing pleasure. And what a set of gams Hellfjord has on it. From the very beginning, it wastes no time in piquing interest, it has a sale to make and wants to make sure everyone buys in. Hellfjord starts with Salmander (Zahid Ali) getting transferred from his position in the Oslo police force. He is a lightning rod of a PR nightmare due to actions involving his horse, Gunnar, at the Independence Day parade, actions that left many people traumatized. Unable to can him instantly due to technicalities, the department’s next best option is to ship him far, far...

Wow! I literally just jumped up for joy hearing this final wave. I think that this might be my favorite selection of films since I have been attending. Films like American Mary, Antiviral, Berberian Sound Studio, the remake of Who Can Kill A Child? – Come Out and Play and the World Premiere of the sequel to The Collector! These films plus a few others just caps off what I’m sure will be my favorite Fantastic Fest yet!
Also, for those keeping score, Michael picked 7 movies that are definitely showing while I picked 6. However, this could change once the secret screenings show. Again, Fantastic Fest starts next Thursday and we plan to have reviews, interviews and possibly video & audio blogs. Anyway, here’s the announcement:
