A Frankenstein Complex
claudio_carvalho31 December 2011
Vivien decides to sell their house, but the family can not afford to move to another place since they are broken. She discovers the bloody story of the house built by the insane scientist Charles to his wife Nora.

Meanwhile Ben, who is having several blackouts, is visited by his former affair Hayden McClaine that tells him that she will not abort their child and she will move to Los Angeles, expecting that Ben pays for her expenses. Ben's new patient, Sally Freeman, is missing and a detective is seeking her out.

Violet presses her mother to keep the house. Hayden comes to the house and presses Ben, telling him that she will tell Vivien about their affair. Out of the blue, the insane Larry Harvey kills Hayden and buries her in the backyard of the house.

"Murder House" is a great episode of "American Horror Story", where there are finally situations that will change the lives of Ben and Vivien. The difficulty to sell the house brings a weird guest and the fate of Hayden will probably bring problems to Ben. My vote is seven.

Title (Brazil): "Murder House"

Note: On 12 April 2017 I saw this episode again.

what happened and what is happening in the murder house?
MomentIMDB17 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The season continues to tell us about the past of the house and how the harmons adapt to the house.

the episode begins showing us the reason for the hatred of constance a moira. Jessica Lange always amazing and badass.

I like that Vivien took the initiative to move, since after the home invasion he was scared and his manipulation to the seller of the house shows his strength.

A cunfuso moment was when Ben appeared twice in the courtyard and without remembering anything, and apparently it was moira, but what is her plan?

The inclusion of the murders tour enchanted me and explained to us who the first owners were and their dark life. Lily Rabe is a great actress and her performance is excellent.

Hayden arrives at the murder house with the idea of staying with Ben and taking care of the baby together but whoever steps on the murder house does not leave. Larry kills her and to hide the corpse, Ben builds a kiosk. It seems that Ben has one less problem, or not? because he who dies appears again.

Ben 3rd Strike, smart writing, feminist spirit, promising Frankenstein, enchainting Moiras, sane format, pretty faces but mediocre make-up, When Hayden Met Larry
igoatabase22 October 2011
To pinch ! Panch ? Punch !? As long as I can conjugate this review should write itself just fine. The moment Ben's therapy session began I had two options. The first was that I was losing my mind and needed to take an ice cold shower. The other was that Murder House could actually reveal that the pilot and Home Invasion were just the tip of an iceberg actually melting boiling lava. This third installment should convince any drug addict that the best trip is 100% clean and artistic ! After watching the second episode I still had a slight doubt about the show potential and its format but not anymore. The season is going to wow our highest expectations !

Ben's journey in Gardenland was really confusing and sadly I'm not literate enough to associate it with the many references that populate the series apparently. What I enjoyed the most was the writing. They definitely don't underestimate our intelligence and the characters couldn't be more realistic, if life was an asylum. This is not Scream, there's no doubt about it ! The decisions they make are the right ones and if they change their mind it's really for a good reason, like material or health constraints for instance. The contrast between the way Vivien and Violet dealt with the invasion was specially thoughtful because the second proved she's no screaming brunette. As for the mother I'm not sure if she's ready to share a cup of tea with the basement's devil but this time she proved her strength by handling situations like a true modern housewife warrior ! From the realtor to her husband she won't let anyone strand in her way. You go, mummy !

But now it's hard to separate the Harmons from their house because it seems the last has found the perfect odd inhabitants. That's why learning more about its past was enlightening but also quite exciting because visiting a spooky house is a child's dream. Moreover the scene where Vivien cuts yellow roses was cleverly staged as she wasn't the only left speechless by what she saw in the street, the whole audience was. Don't you have a Murder House in your neighbourhood ? As for the Frankenstein arc it's promising but I think its development in the present was far too anecdotic. At least it allowed us to take a closer look at the house's wonderful decoration, from the stained glasses to the vintage chandeliers. Like Violet said, the house has a unique identity.

Otherwise even if all these parts were fantastic my favorite was by far the one involving the Moiras. Alex Breckenridge incarnated the ultimate French maid fantasy in the pilot but it was only her first lesson. The second one ? How to welcome your employee while cleaning a wooden floor with a moisty sponge. More seriously it makes things even more ambivalent when other people see her, beside Vivien and Ben. As for Frances Conroy waiting two episodes for her to finally unleash her tremendous talent really paid off because her scenes with Constance and the couple were shattering. In fact the episode was heavy on character development in general and pivotal for Moira. It also revealed a whole new side of her personality and I wonder how her employees will handle her from now on. Things are relatively complex considering her young self drives Ben crazy when Vivien needs her as no one else would probably want to take care of their home. In the end she's a dual persona hard to resist as the emotions she makes us feel couldn't be more extreme. From attraction to disturbing empathy my opinion about them couldn't be more conflicted.

To sum things up this third session with American Horror Story was as excellent as the pilot but traded its scary bestiary for a nutsy circus. It's specially true considering pretty crazy Hayden made an unexpected comeback. As Kate Mara's performance is both frightening and moving I can't wait for her next appearance ! Again it proves that the show has found the right balance between developing its main story, the Harmons lived happily ever after, and warming things up with some episodic wicked stuff. My only complain would be Larry Harvey because the actor's make-up has a terrible plastic aspect. It's specially disappointing considering Denis O'Hare's acting has been convincing so far. An explanation would be that The Walking Dead airs on Sunday, so three days before the show, and as it features the best horrific visual effects on TV it's nearly impossible not to compare his burns to the rotten walkers. In my opinion his character designer should have just gone wild and injected him some of Freddy Krueger's DNA !

S1.E3 - House Of Horror [8.6/10]
panagiotis19939 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E3) My Live Reaction / Review for American Horror Story Season 1 Episode 3 ''Murder House''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 8/10. Constance killed Moira and her husband? Damn. This family is falling apart. Ben's ex girlfriend decided to keep the baby? Things just got complicated. So many bad things have happened in this house. There are so many ghosts in this house, its amazing that Vivien, Ben and Violet havent realized it yet. Ben is shoveling, I wonder what he will find. Ben's ex gilrfriend is nuts. Larry hit Ben's ex girlfriend with a shovel? What the hell? Is he a ghost too? Probably not. Ben buried her? Damn, he is officially a criminal and a murderer in my eyes now. Overall this episode was good, my rating is 8.6/10.

Love-hate-relationship

I just watched season 1, Murder house. In the beginning I really enjoyed it, and couldn´t wait till the next episode, BUT then it sort of just began to open up one big plothole after the other, which started ruining the experience for me. There are too many contradictory things going on as the story evolves, and a fair amount of actual flaws as well. Some of the characters react very unrealistic to the grotesque things they see, and some of them do things that are very unfit to their character, and doesn´t make any sense. However I rate Murder house 6 stars, beacuse of the first half of the episodes, and the great plot, which could have been so much better if it hadn´t driven off the track halfways.

Get away!
AvionPrince1625 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Still interesting moments: we know more about the past of the house and the first owners who were a doctor and his wife and we will know the terrible truth about the doctor and his acts in some young girls. We know also more the story between the housekeeper and the neighbour and why she get shot (because she bangs her boyfriend). So Vivien still want to sold the house and she had a visitor who seem to be the wife of the doctor in the past and that feel pretty dangerous for Vivien and her baby. She will hear the story about the doctor and his wife by a guy who worked near the house. Violet and Tate get more and more closer despite the dangerous behaviour of her boyfriend. Ben also have some problems: he has some blank and he wake up without knowing what happened and a case about a missing woman -who was his patient - will make him known that he had a suspect behavior thanks to the recorder found on the victim. Ben have a problem with his ex girlfriend who wanted to tell everything to Vivien and about the baby that she has but the guy with the face burn will killed her and Ben will cover him and hide the body.

The episode is pretty interesting and have some intriguing moments (Ben's memory problems, the house secrets, the housemaid, Vivien). I mean all the characters are pretty mysterious and have their own way to hide the truth or secrets but i need to say that the horror side missed a lot in that episode and didnt feel the horror at all. Some times it was erotic (the housemaid behavior), drama(Ben and the kill at the end) but the horror genre seem to be something secondary or dont seem to be there(just one scene with that lady with the head injured but thats all). So pretty disappointed in this area and i wanted something more focus in the horror genre but im not really satisfied yet but still waiting. Need to see more.

Not Feeling It.
artpf1 January 2014
Still trying to like this show, but it's actually really bad. The script writing is ridiculous. Nothing makes sense. It's impossible to suspend disbelief because it's so over the top.

The acting ranges from good to horrible, but that's because the scripts are just so dumb and the characters are forced to deliver lines that are often laffable.

There's also silly sub plots that are of no interest -- like the dowdy maid who is seen as a hot tart by the guys. Further, these segment start to drift into soft-core porn. Weird for a commercial channel, even if it is on cable.

Jessica Lange is an odd character in that she seems to have always lived there, in SoCal, but somehow has a deep Southern accent.

I'm really shocked at the great reviews this show gets because it's really a train wreck in so many ways.
