Pole Riders is one of those movies that only come around every decade or so. The kind that forces us all to re-invent ourselves based on the perspective we've gained. Each time I watch it I find some new clever nuance that adds to the experience, forcing me to see it over and over, and changing me a little each time. The plot seems simple at first, but as with all things in this movie its charm lays in its effortless complexity as nothing is what it seems. The characters may seem like clichés, but each are hiding something from the other that changes everything, the depth of which is easy to miss by the casual observer. This is an emotional movie with many powerful highs and lows. From the elation felt when a plot twist is revealed, to the crushing despondency forced into my soul when a tragedy is shared that hits too close to home. Whether or not you agree with its message you will feel the love and pain poured into this by the writers and actors and afterword, you may never be the same.
