A '4" might be a little high for this but it kept my attention all the way through. It had some interesting subplots that I had hoped would go somewhere but didn't.
DIALOGUE. Since I don't speak the language then I can't say if it is good or bad. The English subtitles are fairly average.
ACTING. Overall poor and if I understood the language, likely worse. But I did find some of the acting okay especially for this level of movie.
PLOT. I wish there was one. There is the subplot with survivors that never goes anywhere. There is the subplot with what we think is military left behind that doesn't go anywhere and none of them speak. There is the subplot of the original outbreak and going back to the base to find something that doesn't go anywhere. There is picking up the girl, and it seems everyone back home knows that is the case, but that's never explained. Was it that girl or any child of that age? If you are going for the girl then why not send more mercenaries and why add the doctors. Yes the female doctor did examine the girl but that was over the objections of the colonel. The rape scene doesn't go anywhere as it could have been a subplot with the soldier catching the disease that way. This is really a story of the break down of cohesion in a mercenary group of soldiers more than a zombie movie.
LOCATION. I found the locations interesting and not ones that I've seen before. The opening scenes are in abandoned buildings but there appears to be abandoned apartment buildings in the background. Going through the frontier gate was interesting although logically they would have removed the houses and old cars too close to that gate. Some of the physical locations felt good and the final building, while deserted, looks like it is partly maintained. There is that odd discrepancy seen in many movies and TV shows where it's been years since some outbreak but people walk through areas that are clearly maintained. As they approach the final building, they are on a dirt road that is still compacted and completely free of any weeds.
CHARACTERS. I did start to like a couple of characters and they were not afraid of killing them off. In a better movie that could have been handled better and kept us wondering if any of them would make it out alive. The death of the female doctor is sudden and brutal and not expected.
EFFECTS. There are no great effects but for once I did feel like the actors were using real guns. The sounds of the guns and the bullets hitting objects sounded very real.
So it is a low B movie but it did keep my attention most of the time. It got its locations alright. It got the harsh edge of decisions (killing others off) right. It got a mixed up plot with some interesting elements if they had gone anywhere.
