For the sequel to Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Matt Reeves was brought into the picture, who, at the time, was notable for his work on Cloverfield. Not only Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ended up being bigger and better in every aspect compared to its predecessor, but it also made a splash at the box office, grossing over $710 million.
Reasonably, the hype for the third film in the trilogy, which was set to conclude Caesar’s story was extremely high and Reeves didn’t disappoint, as the threequel ended up outshining its predecessor. Interestingly, for the poignant finale of the trilogy, Reeves took inspiration from one of the best Star Wars entries to date.

Grossing over $2 billion worldwide since its inception in 1968, the Planet of the Apes franchise has turned out to be one of the most successful ones in Hollywood. Based on French author Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel La Planète des singes, the title has released a total of nine movies, expanding its lore, with a tenth one, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes starring The Witcher actress Freya Allan in a leading role and set some 300 years after the events of the last outing.
A rough outline of all the movies involves humans, intelligent apes, and some sort of conflict. However, the dystopian setting where mankind comes down on its knees to face a brutal twist of fate sets the narrative in different orders for the different iterations. Someone who has just embarked on watching, or one who wishes to refresh their memory of the events of the films, need not watch all nine of them.

Andy Serkis is hailed as a legend of motion capture performances. His work behind the mo-cap suit in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Planet of the Apes trilogy are widely appreciated by fans worldwide. However, it can’t be denied that motion-capture performances have still not received the critical acclaim they deserve.

When the King Kong actor was asked his thoughts on motion-capture acting having a separate Oscars category, he strongly refused it. Serkis thinks that motion-capture acting is not different from normal acting and can also be acknowledged in the present Oscar categories.

Wes Ball is ready to rumble with his upcoming release, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. After the reboot trilogy with Andy Serkis’ Ceasar in the lead came to an end, Ball took on the reigns with new characters and a new story but set in the same (or at least similar) world. This time, instead of Ceasar, we have Noa, a young chimpanzee hunter at the heart of the story, played by Owen Teague.

Following the cult ’70’s film series Planet of the Apes and Tim Burton’s 2001 remake, the franchise was rebooted in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes directed by Rupert Wyatt. This was succeeded by two more sequels which were helmed by The Batman director Matt Reeves in 2014 and 2017 respectively.

Planet of the Apes is one of the longest-running IPs in Hollywood. The franchise is gearing up for another run at the box office with the upcoming film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The movie has been directed by Wes Ball. It is set to be a continuation of the previous films in the series that were directed by Matt Reeves and Rupert Wyatt.
Although Reeves has not returned to the franchise for the latest movie, Wes Ball made it clear that he has a great deal of admiration for what the filmmaker has achieved within the series already. In fact, Ball had words of condemnation for the Oscars committee for failing to recognize Reeves’ movies for their special effects artistry.

Can you believe that amidst the groundbreaking visual effects and gripping storytelling, the Planet of the Apes franchise has not yet won that coveted golden statuette? Wes Ball, the visionary director slated to helm the upcoming fourth installment in this iconic sci-fi franchise (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), has recently voiced a sentiment that many of us would agree with.
He called it “criminal” that no Planet of the Apes movies has yet won an Oscar—and he is not wrong. With our own eyes, we have seen the evolution of this series from its groundbreaking start in 1968 to the recent masterpieces, where the transformative effects and poignant narratives have consistently raised the bar for filmmaking.

There may have been several renditions of the Planet of the Apes franchise but it is Andy Serkis’ phenomenal performance in the 2011 reboot that solidifies him as the inimitable legend who can never be surpassed as far as the role of Caesar is concerned. In simple terms, Andy Serkis is to Caesar what Heath Ledger was to the Joker and in his core, the motion-capture actor has mastered the ape in a way that no other actor can or ever will be able to mimic.

Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes introduced us not just to the ape protagonist, Caesar, but also to his human co-protagonist Dr. Will Rodman, played by James Franco. The first film in the successful Planet of the Apes trilogy centered around how Will adopted Caesar who gets increased intelligence from the Alz-112 drug. Will survives the tragic events of the film, but it initially had planned a different climax for Franco’s character.

With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hitting theaters soon, I figured now would be as good a time as any to revisit the recent Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and journey through Caesar’s story all over again before exploring Kingdom‘s take on the future of the world he created. The modern Planet of the Apes film are something of a pleasantly surprising enigma in popular culture.
In an age where many reboots either adhere so closely to the source material as to feel like a redundant carbon copy or stray so far as to be completely unrecognizable, the Apes trilogy manages to find that balance of maintaining the spirit of the original films while carving out an identity and a story all its own. But just how did they accomplish such a feat? Let’s find out.

The summer movie season is here. After a frankly terrible start to the box office in 2024, all eyes are now on everything from "The Fall Guy" to "Deadpool & Wolverine" to give movie theaters a reason to celebrate. As far as May goes, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" looks to get things moving in the right direction, being the first entry in the franchise in seven years. We've got a new filmmaker, a new cast, a new timeline, and a new reason to believe that this classic sci-fi property will once again find life more than 55 years after the original film debuted in 1968.
Current tracking suggests that "Kingdom" will open between $54 and $61 million domestically, per Deadline. Assuming that holds, it would be a damn fine start for the film. While the budget has yet to be revealed, it is said to be in the $120 million range. Disney and...

With the release of Zendaya's "Challengers" behind us, it's just about time to focus on the arrival of the 2024 summer movie season. That begins, in earnest, with the release of Universal's "The Fall Guy" this Friday. After a couple of particularly bad weekends at the box office that the industry can frankly ill afford, all eyes are now on summer to help turn the tide. Like it or not, the summer now has an undue amount of pressure on it as theaters look for films capable of filling seats so they can sell enough popcorn to keep the lights on. Unfortunately, the slate we have before us doesn't seem, on paper, like it can compete with what we had last year. As a result, we're doomed to be disappointed by what unfolds in the coming months.

You just can't keep those damn dirty apes down. 10 years after Tim Burton's 2001 "Planet of the Apes" re-imagining failed to reignite audiences' passion for stories about intellectually-enhanced simians, the long-running sci-fi franchise made an unexpectedly strong comeback with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." Director Rupert Wyatt's entry in the series is now generally considered the weakest of the modern "Apes" trilogy, which is more of a testament to what Matt Reeves was able to accomplish with his subsequent sequels than necessarily a knock against Wyatt's film. "Rise" itself makes for an effective cautionary tale about humanity's hubris, our lack of compassion toward other living beings, and our habit of being our own worst enemy, as seen through the eyes of its co-protagonist, Caesar (Andy Serkis in his touchstone motion-capture role).
Yes, it's easy to forget that Caesar wasn't originally the singular lead of his own story.

This article contains possible spoilers for Dune: Part Three and Dune Messiah.
When Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part One opened in 2021, it only took Warner Bros. six days to announce the sequel. However, when Dune: Part Two opened this past March 1—despite doing huge business and clearly paving the way for a third chapter—it took the studio over a month to confirm a film of Dune Messiah was in development. Why the delay? Well, lots of possible reasons, actually.
Even though Dune: Part Two is likely to soon cross the $700 million mark at the global box office, it was an expensive movie to make at a reported $190 million ($25 million more than Part One), plus a marketing budget that likely took that final price tag well over the $300 million mark. Once you factor in that half the box office is going to theaters, you have a low margin for profitability,...

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is just over a month away, and it looks like Wes Ball’s addition to the franchise is stacking up to be a significant hit. The last three Planet of the Apes movies did a good job reinventing the franchise for the 21st century, with the last two instalments, directed by Matt Reeves, especially acclaimed. While the Caesar trilogy has come to an end, the new film is set to follow the same continuity, only taking place generations later. In many ways, Kingdom seems more in line with the original series, with talking apes, led by Owen Teague’s Noa, at war with a primitive human society.
According to Deadline, the film is tracking for a $54-61 million dollar opening, which would put it on track with the last film, War for the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $56 million. It’ll...

This year welcomes the fourth part of the Planet of the Apes franchise- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Though only speculation, it seems like the box office won’t be so fond of the apes. Inspired by the literary work of French author Pierre François Marie Louis Boulle, the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise is all set to release its fourth movie.
Directed by Wes Ball, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes features Owen Teague as the lead actor alongside Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. Distributed by 20th Century Studios, the film’s trailer has already crossed 13 million views. However, despite the franchise’s fame, the movie might not make a great deal at the box office.

You can’t keep a good ape down.
While 2017’s “War of the Planet of the Apes” was a fitting conclusion to the latest trilogy in the (second) rebooted “Planet of the Apes” franchise, more monkey business is headed our way. The first full trailer for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” dropped during the Super Bowl on Sunday, and showed that the battle on the gridiron was no match for a big Hollywood spectacle.
The new film, out on May 10, is directed by Wes Ball (“The Maze Runner”) and stars motion-capture ape renderings performed by Owen Teague (Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s son in “You Hurt My Feelings”), Kevin Durand, and William H. Macy. The part of the doe-eyed human female (wearing the requisite rags) is played by “The Witcher” star Freya Allan.

Franklin J. Schaffner's 1968 sci-fi classic "Planet of the Apes," written by Michael Wilson and Rod Serling, is a perfectly wicked political satire set in a distant, distant future on a distant, distant planet wherein human-like beings live as mute brutes and apes have evolved into the dominant rulers of the planet. The planet is discovered by a group of Earth astronauts who flew through some sort of time vortex while in the outer cosmos, and their leader, the stalwart Taylor (Charlton Heston), finds himself having to prove to the planet's own apes that humans are indeed capable of speech and thought.
In one of the best-known twist endings in cinema history, the film ultimately reveals that the planet of the apes was Earth all along. Taylor discovers a millennia-old Statue of Liberty on a distant beach, realizing that humans destroyed themselves in a nuclear conflagration and that apes evolved in their place.

Disney and Tsg Entertainment Finance have settled litigation from August of 2023 when the financier sued the media giant for “rampant self-dealing” and breach of the parties’ revenue participation contract.
“The matter has been resolved,” said a Disney spokesperson.
Tsg said it has financed more than 140 films to the tune of $3.3 billion over the years with Fox, which Disney acquired in 2019, including Avatar: The Way of Water, Bohemian Rhapsody, Deadpool, Deadpool 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Martian, The Grand Budapest Hotel, JoJo Rabbit, The Banshees of Inisherin, Hidden Figures, The Shape of Water and Empire of Light.
Tsg’s lawsuit filed last August in Los Angeles District Court said that Fox had promised Tsg a share of defined gross receipts for pictures under the companies’ long-term participation agreement but that the studio used “nearly every trick in the Hollywood accounting book” to not pay.

Disney and 20th Century Studios have settled a breach of contract lawsuit from film financier Tsg Entertainment, which accused them of withholding profits and self-dealing to boost subscriber numbers for their streaming platforms.
Lawyers for both sides notified the court on Jan. 5 of a deal to resolve the dueling suits. Terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed.
The case centered on an independent audit of three films Tsg invested in, including best picture winner The Shape of Water, that revealed it’s owed at least $40 million. This shortfall, the company alleged, caused it to take a worse position in its investment of Avatar: The Way of Water and deprived it of the cash necessary to exercise options to invest in other movies.

Fans can take a trip to the “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” sooner than expected.
Disney is moving up the release date for the new “Planet of the Apes” movie from May 24 to May 10. It avoids a crowded Memorial Day holiday weekend that also includes the releases of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie.” The apes will now take on the Amy Winehouse biopic, “Back to Black,” on the new date.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” will also screen in Imax for the first two weeks of its release, marking a first for an “Apes” movie.
The new movie is set 300 years in the future and follows a new civilization of apes, monkeys, gorillas, orangutans and other primates. The previous reboot trilogy, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011), “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (2014) and “War for the Planet of the Apes...

Gary Oldman is one of the most talented active veteran actors in Hollywood right now. He’s graced us with countless unforgettable performances — think of his currently ongoing Apple TV+ show Slow Horses or his role of Dreyfus in Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes and Dracula in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. His most iconic role, however, and arguably, is that of Sirius Black in the Harry Potter franchise. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the installment where Sirius Black was first introduced, was a massive tonal shift for the franchise as the...

After bringing Caesar to life so brilliantly in the Planet of the Apes trilogy, you might imagine that Andy Serkis would obviously have a part to play in the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Sadly, that’s not the case, but director Wes Ball told Empire (via /Film) that they considered it for a long time.
“We talked about it, for sure. Like, ‘Could you play another ape character?’” Wes Ball said. “I entertained that thought for a long time, because I thought it would be f***ing cool. And Matt [Reeves] would always say, ‘Andy is the best actor I’ve ever worked with.’” At the end of the day, Ball decided that Serkis’ performance in the Planet of the Apes trilogy “was just too iconic,” but added that there’s a chance he could appear in future movies.

The Maze Runner trilogy director Wes Ball’s addition to the Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is set to reach theatres on May 24, 2024 – and in an interview with Empire magazine, Ball revealed that he has drawn inspiration from the likes of Star Wars and Apocalypto when putting together his Apes movie.
According to Empire, Ball is making Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes “an adventure movie, tonally distinct from the darker impulses of the recent Apes trilogy, while hoping to retain what made those films so special.” The director said, “When I first started on it, I said, ‘I feel like Apes needs a little bit of Star Wars’. It’s all still very grounded in reality, but it is essentially a quest narrative. Our main character – the young, impressionable Noa [Owen Teague] – meets characters along the way and becomes awakened as...

The world truly belongs to the apes in the first trailer for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.”
Set generations after the 2017 trilogy capper, “Kingdom” concerns the legacy of Ceasar’s reign, with multiple ape societies flourishing. The trailer is mostly voiceover, with a young ape opining about visions that may be memories or might be something more. The rest of the 106-second trailer, which you can watch above, is a series of visually dynamic but narratively cryptic images, showing off a new status quo where the apes are the uncontested leaders while what’s left of humanity exists in a feral state.
The new installment comes courtesy of director Wes Ball. He earned plaudits for directing all three chapters of the mid-2010s “Maze Runner” series. This film, penned by Josh Friedman, Rich Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Patrick Aison, stars William H. Macy, Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Peter Macon,...

Max, formerly known as HBO Max, has rolled out its first Top 10 lists in an effort to increase engagement with its best films and series.
Atop the inaugural podium for series are “Hard Knocks” (NFL training camp with the New York Jets), “And Just Like That…,” and “Winning Time,” a series about the Los Angeles Lakers of the ’80s.
Leading movies are DC disappointment “The Flash,” Bishop Sycamore high-school football documentary “Bs High,” and 2015 Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart prison comedy “Get Hard.”
It measures only those series that released a new episode on the platform within the last six weeks period and movies that debuted within the last eight weeks. Those are the windows when hits usually happen; you’ll see movies a heck of a lot older then “Get Hard” on Max’s top 10. Linear tune-in via HBO or the Discovery cable channels does not count toward Max’s Top 10.

Disney is being accused of hindering a deal between 20th Century Studios and Tsg Entertainment Finance in an effort to boost Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions, stock prices and executive compensation. In a new lawsuit, Tsg Entertainment Finance says an independent audit of three films including best picture winner The Shape of Water revealed it’s owed more than $40 million — after all is said and done, the company suspects the total will be in the hundreds of millions — and the cash shortfall has caused it to take a worse position in its investment in Avatar: The Way of Water.
Tsg on Tuesday sued 20th Century Studios for breach of contract and Disney for inducing that breach. The financier says it has invested more than $3.3 billion into well over 100 films, which also include Bohemian Rhapsody, Deadpool, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Martian, The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Banshees of Inisherin.

Filmmaking legend William Friedkin has sadly passed away, although he left us with one last film before his death. The director of "The French Connection" and "The Exorcist" was recently gearing us for the release of what will now serve as his final bow, "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial." The film is based on Herman Wouk's courtroom stage drama of the same name, itself adapted from Wouk's own 1952 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. It also rounds out what could be considered an unofficial trilogy of plays-turned-films directed by Friedkin after his previous two non-documentary features, "Bug" and "Killer Joe" (both of which were based on plays by Tracy Letts).
"The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial" centers around one Lieutenant Stephen Maryk (Jake Lacy), a Naval officer who is put on trial for mutiny after he forcibly relieves the captain of the USS Caine, Lieutenant Commander Phillip Queeg (Kiefer Sutherland), from his duties, believing him to be mentally unfit.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.
