- Trevor and his cosplay Pirate buddies live in Ludington, a Midwest Harbortown. As the film opens, they are on the beach in Pirate gear with Trevor and a pirate beauty tied up and being circled by menacing pirates. We soon realize it is a scene for local television to promote awareness of the town's iconic North Breakwater Lighthouse, which is threatened by the wrecking ball.
We then learn Trevor is tasked with caring for his brother's former children as his brother and his wife were killed in a car accident. His old flame, the children's Godmother Ana, returns to town to become involved in the children's lives again. This creates a love triangle between Ana and Trevor's current girlfriend, Rachel. Sparks and insults fly between the girlfriends.
Trevor struggles with parenting and his task as a leader of the Pirates in saving the Lighthouse. As a Peter Pan type who is not ready to accept the mantle of adulthood and commitment, Trevor has frequent anxiety attacks. His brother's children, who have become his children, both struggle with separation anxiety which further's Trevor's burden and his own anxiety.
As all seems lost with the town's Lighthouse and his love interests rejecting him, his 8-year-old Dana comes up with a sketch that accidentally suggests a solution to save the Lighthouse. Racing to get the solution to the right people for the Lighthouse before its demolition is confirmed, he discovers his returning love Ana still carries a torch for him. The big event, scheduled to be a concert to save the Lighthouse, becomes a farewell of the townspeople for the Lighthouse's retirement. At the last minute, the Lighthouse's solution is accepted, but as Trevor confesses his love openly at the concert, Ana walks away. Crestfallen, Trevor, and the kids walk off to the end of the dock to lick their wounds from Ana's rejection. Ana returns and gives Trevor the old engagement ring she saved from their first time around. Ana confesses her love for Trevor, and Trevor proposes. They kiss, and the kids, Zach and Dana, shout joyfully. They all return to the concert to celebrate the saved Lighthouse, their love for one another, and a renewed family bond.
